College Hoops Open Thread, Dec. 19th
Yellow fever should have the first of many bowl threads this holiday season up later this afternoon, but until then, let's check out some of the big time + Pac-10 hoops going on and do some preliminary scouting!
noon EST/9 AM PST: Michigan at Kansas, ESPN HD. Your last chance to sample a Jayhawk ass-whomping before Cal comes to town next Tuesday. Although you'll probably be sampling an ass-whomping then anyway.
2 PM EST/11 AM PST: UCLA at Notre Dame, CBS HD. Bruins, don't embarrass yourselves too much.
2 PM EST/11 AM PST: North Carolina vs Texas in Jerry Jones's fun house, ESPN HD: It's beyond me how this will actually work, but at least it serves as a nice tuneup for All-Star Weekend.
2 PM EST/11 AM PST: Furd at Northwestern, Big Ten Network: This looks like a loss...
4 PM EST/1 PM PST: Gonzaga vs Duke in New York City, CBS HD: Fucking Duke. Don't they have their own arena to play around in?
4:30 PM EST/1:30 PM PST: Tennessee at USC, FSN HD/CSN Bay Area: This looks like a loss (although the Trojans have a new point guard!)
Local coverage: San Diego St.-Arizona St at 6:30 PM PST/3:30 PM PST, Portland-UDub & Oakland-Oregon, 10 PM EST/7 PM PST. Just don't faceplant guys.

Don't revel UCLA's demise too much
This is an anomaly and I expect people to be surprised how they turn out, because at this pace expectations have sunk to the bottom of the Pac-10. But the recruits they have are talented and young, and it’s probably just a matter of time until Howland gets them playing to their potential.
Don’t get too arrogant, watch out, beware. Only at the end of the season, if they completely suck, then we can laugh and dance and party all over their face. Until them, I’m still expecting a solid challenge.
…It’s part of Cal Bear Fan DNA to lower expectations.

It'll be very interesting how they respond in Pac-10 play
Because they’d probably have to win the conference title to earn a tourney bid, they’ll be playing with an added sense of desperation in January and February.
Then again, so will everyone else in the Pac, since we might only see 2-3 teams get in.

I dunno, UCLA (for them) appear to be historically bad. Every tempo free stat indicates bad defense and extremely bad offense. I expect UCLA to be much improved next year, but I don’t really see them making any kind of leap this year – too much youth/lack of depth/lack of talent. There’s nobody to come and save them right now.

Yeah, I’m sure they’ll be playing much better by the end of the year… especially as their best athlete Tyler Honeycutt recovers from his injury

Kansas up 14-11 early, neither team shooting very well so far.
Then again Michigan looks like they have competent bigs who can body up Aldrich…forcing a lot of jumpers and making them work to get their inside looks.

You make Kansas sound like an NBA team. They are not…they are beatable… sorta wish we didn’t have a layoff, as we’re going to need a hot hand to pull the upset

Aldrich, Collins, Henry are all getting drafted next year, so they’re essentially NBA-lite.

I dunno, I feel you’re shortselling them…they’ve been really great on both sides of the ball from what I’ve seen on them. And they have a lot of strengths that we can’t really match.

They’re the best team in the country by far in my eyes… That doesn’t mean they’re going to play a perfect game every week. Last year, UDub has ‘strengths we [couldn’t] really match’ but we found ways to beat them twice. Teams don’t play the same game every week. I’ve seen them be incredibly sloppy at times in three games, and if we capitalize, we can outscore them.

look, i’m not saying we’re going to win. that is very unlikely. but it’s not an unwinnable game by any stretch, as i can say with great confidence we can beat them if they turn in a performance that mirrors how they played against UCLA

i think you could be shortselling the way we’ve played the last few games too… as you can see from kenpom, our offensive efficiency is top 5 in the country (yes yes unfortunately kansas is #2)

We’re a markedly different team with Theo, that’s for sure. And our three losses have come to teams that are a combined 29-2…
Then I realize Max, Boykin and MSF have to guard Aldrich, Robinson and Morris for 40 minutes and feel like all is hopeless.

it does suck that OSU lost Turner though… as our opponents would prob be 30-1 if he was still playing (may hurt our SoS a tad too)

Yeah, I’m getting the same vibe, although there are a few upset specials I really like. But most of these teams are pretty evenly-matched.

Today’s EPL results made me smile. Tottenham taking 3 away in Blackburn is the type of result they’d never get before this season.
Plus, it’s Donovan time at Everton! (Poor DCTrojan)

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
