Pete Sampson of Irish Ill. reports [5 star DE, former Irish commit] Chris Martin is committing to Cal (I know). Pete seems to think this one will stick. CM is from East Bay.
Tweet from John Walters, College Sports FanHouse writer. If anyone with Rivals access can verify this, head over to Irish Illustrated and check the "On Chris Martin..." thread.
UPDATE: Confirmed; Martin's a Golden Bear! (Thanks to OskiMonsta for the update)

If this proves out and sticks all the way to signing day:

Oh shit he’s a Furdie? I’ve been reading the strip for years and had no idea. This calls everything into question.

Well, I can’t confirm first hand, but I can tell you that Coach Lupoi ‘hit a home run’ with Chris Martin this weekend. There will be something tomorrow. Word is that there are others to follow.
word from who?
Are you willing to come forward with sources?
What did i tell you...didn't I say they would win? Yeah that's right I did didn't ? Wait.. what? They LOST?!?!?

Woah.
Just watched Rival’s video on this kid… he’s a monster… Looks exactly like the weakside DE/LB hybrid we NEED.
If this is true, I expect this guy to get time in as a true freshman.

it was reported somewhere that
Kenwick Thompson and Bob Gregory were his main recruiters.

This is one of those situations when I almost wish I didn’t hear the news, because I’m a cynic (espeically regarding recruiting) and expect to be disappointed. Hope it’s true and hope it sticks. We haven’t had a 5 star since Desean, right?

Or Hawk, or Desmond Bishop.
So basically 5 star players come to Cal from high school, they become NFL phenoms. There! Got it.

Awesome
I think when he was committed to ND, he was planning on being a January enrollee, any idea if that’s still the case?
“Chris Martin is committing to Cal (I know)” John Walters can go Eff himself. What a slap in the face to Cal. As if ND has been relevant in college football the past decade, only making BCS games with their weak schedule and getting whipped each time.

Wasn’t there a situation where some writer wrote that someone had comitted to Cal and then the kid pulled back because he didn’t get to announce?
I’m only scared that this could happen with some of the other kids :(

Easily, Cal's most talented class ( if it holds ) since the Jackson class four years ago and maybe
their most talented class in the tedford era. Too bad there aren’t too many commits but I would rather have quality then depth at this point. Your thoughts?

I dunno, wouldn’t you agree that the switch to a 3-4 means D success correlates more with good LB’s? (And we have two of the top LB’s and now one of the top hybrid pass rushers in the country in our class). Plus no one really could have predicted the total regression of the DB’s. In general it seems like with Tedford, talent plus playing time = wins.

I would not quite agree
To make a 3-4 work, you need one of those three to be a killer DT who commands double teams. Even if the four LBs are really good to great, there’s only so much they can do if the three in front of them are getting handled. The 3-4 lets a defense be more creative and take advantage of having more good LBs, but it still depends on having one unselfishly consistent guy up front (unselfishly because he’s not going to get big numbers, just take up the O-line while the LBs fly in for sacks and tackles).
Who's your Draddy?
In college I don’t even think that DT has to be all that great. I felt our guys this year did a decent job, even though none of them were really the stout NT type you see like Wilfork, Jamal Williams or Casey Hampton. A decent DT at all can get it done against the weaker competition. Still, I do think you’re right that it’s important. Rush LB is also very important, though, as these last two years have taught us. Nobody stepped up in that role this year, and our D struggled because of it whereas last year we had Follett.

It's Official
Chris martin a solid Cal commit!!
This is great because if Gregory is only going to rush 3 guys, they better be really, really good!
GOLD OUT MOZAMBIQUE!
The only thing that worries me
Is that this was a 5-star Notre Dame recruit, and there’s always been that strange thing where people aren’t sure if recruits are being recruited by Notre Dame because they’re good, or if they suddenly develop an aura that they’re good because Notre Dame is recruiting them.
Not to mention Charlie Weis wasn’t exactly the best recruiter of defensive players to begin with. But maybe I’m being too pessimistic about this.
Proud to hold season tickets to the only NBA team soon to be owned by a Russian oligarch.
Not to rain on the parade here, but in my view until we receive that faxed LOI in 2010 with his name on it, it’s not over. Hopefully, Mr. Martin is a man of his word and follows through on his commitment here. But we’ve certainly seen a variety of sitches where somebody committed to a school and then backed out. This is a field with little honor, I have found.

The thing that makes me feel confident about this commitment is that Cal is his hometown school.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
That, and, for what it’s worth, his mother said the commitment was “solid” and that they wouldn’t do anymore school visits or anything.

Spoken like a true Cal fan. I can’t blame you one bit for this approach. The comforting thing to know is that Martin’s parents are very close to Berkeley. I think that will hold out.
In typical Cal fan fashion, I’m thinking in terms of worst case scenario. How this might hurt our positioning with King and/or Owa, and then if Florida or Oklahoma swoops in…
If it sticks to LOI day, I’m stoked. Until then, I’m bracing for the worst.
And in any case, yes, Lupoi is definitely underpaid.
Ok, I’m feeling more secure after reading what follows:
Solarise posted this in the Dec. recruiting thread, via ESPN On the Trail.
ESPNU 150 defensive end Chris Martin (Aurora, Colo.,/Grandview) has decided to come back home, verbally committing to Cal, choosing the Bears over Florida, $C, and Oklahoma, ESPN affiliate Web site IrishSportsDaily.com reports.
Back in February, Martin, who is an Oakland native, verbally committed to Notre Dame, but dropped the Irish from consideration December 1st.
"One of the things, when Chris committed to Notre Dame, the quote I said to him was Chris, if you do not go to Notre Dame, you need to come back home," Martin’s mother Cheryl said. "Well, he’s coming back home and this is solid. We’re not going to do anymore visits or entertain anyone coming by."
ESPN’s Craig Haubert added, "Cal scored big this weekend and it looks like they have coaching changes at two other schools to partially thank for it. Florida seemed to be a strong contender, but it appears the staff turnover there clouded the picture and made the hometown Golden Bears look like right fit. Regardless of the path that led Martin to Cal, the Golden Bears now add to their top-25 caliber class with their highest rated prospect."
"Martin is a kid who possesses good natural size and certainly looks the part. He has played several positions and while we feel overall he will fit best as a defensive end, in Cal’s scheme they could get more from him. With his size he could fit well at end, but he could also be a good fit for them at outside linebacker in their 3-4 look as more of that hybrid end / backer. With his size and straight line speed he could be tough to handle."
"Overall we think Martin needs to keep working on and improving areas of his game, but he is a kid with the tools to be a heck of defender and in the end may have found the ideal fit."
Martin is the second ESPNU 150 and 11th overall commitment for the Bears’ Class of 2010.
I’m not terribly convinced by the word of 18 year olds. But the 18 year old’s mama who misses her baby boy, that’s something different entirely.
I’d say since Martin is the only DL verbal commit at this point, our chances w/ Owa/Ego Ferguson/Gabe King are still very good. The coaching staff is too smart to put Chris Martin in a situation where he gets double or triple-teamed all the time. Owa & Ego could be making their announcements early January during or before the Army All-American game. King sounds like it’ll get all the way to signing day.
So in a post similar to the one for Devon Kennard
Do you think Chris Martin could potentially have the same impact?
Watching the video of him and his highlights, the guy is definitely much larger than every other person on the field. he seems to have good speed, a decent pass rush, but he definitely defends the run very well. He seems to have pretty active hands as well.
The consensus seems to be that Chris Martin needs to bulk up a little big more. Whether he can make an early impact like Devon Kennard or Vontaze Burfict is gonna depend on how fast he learns 3-4. Owusu, Guyton, Payne, Kaufusi, and possibly Deandre Coleman and Jerome Meadows are all ahead of Martin on the depth chart at this point.

One time USC commit from LA area that would be an early enrollment guy. Doesn’t look like it’s official though but sounds promising based on Bear Insider.
Story from the Gainsville Sun's reporter on Martin's recruitment
It didn’t take long for Charlie Strong’s departure to hurt the Gators (see Jeff Luc to Florida State), but now Florida has to be frustrated about losing out on Aurora, Colo., Grandview defensive end Chris Martin, too. Martin, who was awfully generous with his text messages concerning recruiting over the last few weeks, decided to stay closer to home by verbally committing to the University of California. Funny, just a couple weeks ago all the talk was about how Martin was about to become another Notre Dame commit to pick the Gators late in the year. Things really did look great for the Gators … until the coaching carousel turned on.
First, it was defensive coordinator Charlie Strong who packed up and took the Louisville head coaching job. I texted Martin and he said losing Strong hurt Florida’s chances a little, but that coach Urban Meyer and receivers coach Billy Gonzales were his primary recruiters. Close call for Gator fans. Nothing to worry about there. Well, not so fast. Days after Martin made that comment, Gonzales left to become passing coordinator at LSU. Once I got the official news, I texted Martin but got nothing. For someone who has always returned my texts (since he said no phone interviews until signing day), I knew this loss hurt him the most. Gonzales is such a personable guy and recruits love that about him. With him gone, not even Meyer could keep Martin.
Monday, Martin made things official by ending his recruitment and committing to the Bears. Martin didn’t return any texts about it, but he did tell Rivals.com that he was looking for "stability in his life" and that he found it at Cal.
"The whole stability of the program was key," Martin told Rivals. "Academics and everything about the school made it feel like it was a family. That was the main decision for me. I’m not looking to be everywhere bouncing around and not knowing about my future. I’ve already gone through enough bouncing around. I’ve gone from California to Colorado. I thought I was going to be in New Jersey and end up at Notre Dame, but that all changed."
Welcome home Chris Martin!
Chris Martin is going away to college. At the same time he’s coming home. In the end that may have been the deciding factor for the five-star defensive end.
Coveted by the likes of USC, Florida, Oklahoma and Notre Dame, to whom he verbally committed last February, Martin has now let it be known that he will sign with Cal. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Martin, who is living with an older cousin in Aurora, Colo., during his senior year, will play his college ball just 10 minutes from where he grew up in San Leandro, Calif.
“It was the best situation for him, to be close with his family,” Martin’s cousin, Deshaun Shewl, told FanHouse Monday night. “He made his mom really happy.”
Martin visited the Berkeley campus this weekend and by Sunday night he was texting reporters that he was headed to Cal. Martin made a verbal commitment to the Fighting Irish last winter but he had always made it clear that if Charlie Weis was fired that he might reopen his recruitment. By mid-November, with Weis in jeopardy of losing his job, it appeared that Martin was headed to the Sooners.
Instead, he is headed home. On Monday night, as Martin wolfed down a plate of chicken, his cousin and mentor took the phone and expounded on the reasons for the choice.
“Going home was important,” Shewl said. “They also play a 3-4 defense, which suits him better.”
Brian Kelly, whose hiring was announced just last Friday, has not phoned Martin. But, according to Shewl, a plethora of coaches from other schools have continued calling Martin even after he made his latest verbal commitment. Are they wasting their time?
“It’s over,” said Shewl. “Chris is going home.”
