The 2009 Cal Football Season In Graphs!

I'm still not ready to talk about what the hell happened last week. I'm not very pleased, and any thoughts I have would probably emerge in Gollum-like raving and ranting. "THE HUSKIESSS CURSED US!!!"

So as coldly as possible, I'll let these poorly constructed, statistically deficient graphs tell the story (HT to EDSBS for the idea).

So, Hinder’s the man next year?

"He's so fast, he can turn off the lights and be in bed before it gets dark!" -- Lee Corso on Jahvid Best in NCAA 10.

Well that’s encouraging. Cal fans have gone from calling for the backup QB, to the third stringer, to the true freshman. Next year we’re going to demand that kid who wins a Bank of the West end zone contest to suit up in pads and throw an out route.

by Avinash on Dec 13, 2009 6:51 AM PST up reply actions

While Hinder will certainly not be starting, I think it is fair to ask at this point, will Kevin be starting? Nothing he has done this year has given him a lock on the job, though his considerable experience at this will give him a big leg up.

A big showing from one the backups in spring/fall could earn the job. In mildly troubling twist, we could end up in a time share ala 2008 if the practice performances are close. After what can only be characterized as a disappointing season for Mr. Riley, the off-season QB competition will be fascinating.

At this point my purely pulled out my ass projection would give Riley a 64% chance of keeping the job, Sweeney a 21% chance of winning it, Brock 5%, with a 20% chance of time-share

by First and Ten on Dec 13, 2009 8:08 AM PST up reply actions

QB experience has always seemed to play an important factor in Tedford’s decisions on who should start. I fully expect Riley to be Cal’s starting QB next year.

by HydroTech on Dec 13, 2009 9:33 AM PST up reply actions

And not surprisingly

It often plays an important factor in who goes to the Rose Bowl. More often than not, even. That isn’t to say I’m pleased with Riley this year, but frosh QBs are almost never going to get you there.

by ohsooso on Dec 13, 2009 11:15 AM PST up reply actions

Riley is no question going to be the starter. I don’t think there will be a competition.

by Tedfordisgod on Dec 13, 2009 10:58 AM PST up reply actions

Well, I think Riley will share first team snaps with at least one quarterback in spring and fall camps like last year, I just wouldn’t expect that quarterback to start to get the majority of snaps.

Certainly someone will get some reps, but I don’t think he will be “splitting” snaps with anyone.

by Tedfordisgod on Dec 13, 2009 4:21 PM PST up reply actions

I’m just assuming a situation like spring and fall camp last year, where Riley shared a lot of his first team practice time with Mansion and Sweeney (before gradually taking over by the end of fall camp).

by AERose on Dec 13, 2009 4:36 PM PST up reply actions

I doubt even that. Riley has been much better than last year, and I doubt Sweeney and Mansion have progressed enough to match him.

Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com

by Avinash on Dec 13, 2009 4:37 PM PST up reply actions

Fair enough. Might have gotten a bit caught up in the “fire Riley” hype there.

while i was joking with my percentages, i would be surprised if there is not some pretense of a competition for the job. Realistically I would be shocked if Riley is not the starter next year, but i doubt tedford will just announce he is the sure starter.

by First and Ten on Dec 13, 2009 6:21 PM PST up reply actions

I saw time share and my mind blocked out the rest of the post, so no worries anyway.

My theory is that Tedford will do what he thinks is best for the team. Last season, it seemed somewhat reasonable to announce a QB competition. This year, I think the best thing will be to announce that Riley is the incumbent and will be the starter. But we will see.

by Tedfordisgod on Dec 13, 2009 8:27 PM PST up reply actions

certainly a reasonable thought…and i do not doubt tedford will do what he thinks is best for the team. My thinking is that after some of the disappointing games this season he may want to put the fear of god into everyone and let the whole team know they can’t take their jobs for granted.

all this speculation is based on an assumption that the back-ups are performing well enough in practice to make such a competition worthwhile. Who knows whether or not that’s true.

by First and Ten on Dec 13, 2009 8:49 PM PST up reply actions

Correct, obviously all speculation. I kinda think Tedford will take the attitude of “Let’s not overreact about those losses” rather than “Put the fear of God into everyone.”

by Tedfordisgod on Dec 13, 2009 9:12 PM PST up reply actions

Truth or cougar: BotW end zone winners are more accurate than one Kevin Riley. They also don’t roll out right when pressured even when there’s no receiver anywhere on that side of the field.

Lookit the purty pictures!

Pretty damn funny.

Sadly enough, we have no idea whether Mansion, Sweeney, or Brigford can play. Odds of them beating out Riley in the spring are pretty slim given Tedford’s bias towards game experience. So, we have to hope that Riley makes a huge leap forward in accuracy and decision making. That and our o-line are pumping ’roids right now.

by Kodiak on Dec 13, 2009 9:20 AM PST reply actions

and...

I would really hope that if one of the others truly had the chops,Tedford would go with them…I mean, his other stuff aside, he does truly want to effing win, which tells me that Riley is our best shot…not great news, but a likely reality…and frankly, in my judgement Riley is only 10% of the woes so artfully outlined above…O-line, pass rush, DB play, Alamar (..ugh), it goes on…all failed us when we lost, some when we won…so we can go the the winner of Bank of the West endzone toss, who frankly should also handle kick-offs, and we’d be in close to the same boat…I suggest we reset our sites next year at 8 and 4, defining it as absolute rose tinged nirvana, celebrate if we make it, and go apeshit if we do better….if nothing else it will help with my sanity and mood swings

…but seriously, the way I understand it, a “meme” is a social gene. i.e. social values, practices, sayings, etc. that are passed on or spread like genes. On this site, the term is used to mean any joke or idiom that spreads and becomes widely used. An example would be “I declare you Sanchez!”

Failing that, any community in the world is going to have its jokes. Generally understood by the people of that community, but perhaps not by others. Each SBN community of any size seems to have its own set of jokes. These jokes are essentially memes. It could be as simple as a nickname for Joe Blanton. Or as complex as a nickname for Jonathon Okanes.

Riley "Electing" To run

As my fellow Cal alum/CGB fan/ROSE BOWL BEFORE DEPENDS wingman brought to light, does he really have a fucking choice? Was it intentional before the play starts, or did the new line coach really set up a vote in the huddle: “Man, I do’t know…Obama…Hottie with no brain…pancake the DE, or you either run or have a turf sandwich. Gitty up, fleet feet”

If Riley has a tendency to roll to the right under pressure, that just tells me that we need to put more receivers to the right side as dumpoff options.
