Saturday Open Thread: Army/Navy + College Hoops + Heisman Trophy
Bumping this up with the Cal Volleyball game done. Congrats to our Lady Bears for another fantastic season and a valiant effort against the undefeated Nittany Lions!
Here's the schedule of events after the jump.
College football
1 PM EST/10 AM PST: Division II National Championship. Grand Valley St. vs Northwest Missouri St, ESPN2. Hey look, a true national championship in college football! Why can't we have one of those?
2 PM EST/11 AM PST: SWAC Championship, Alabama A&M vs Prarie View A&M, ESPN Classic. The SWAC is so weird. Who decides not to play in the FCS playoffs?
2:30 PM EST/11:30 AM PST: Army vs Navy, CBS. This game will lead to all sorts of existential moments of crisis for Bruins fans. How can one root against the Army?
4 PM EST/1 PM PST: Division I Semifinal, Appalachian St at Minnesota, ESPN. Boom.
8 PM EST/5 PM PST: Heisman Trophy Award, ESPN. Now worth watching for Jim Harbaugh's face reactions.
9 PM EST/6 PM PST: 30 for 30: The U, ESPN. I was born a little too late for the Hurricane madness. Maybe we'll get some highlights of Russell White's 99 yard kickoff return.
College basketball
noon EST/9 AM PST: Kentucky at Indiana, CBS. Take a look at John Wall, college hoops fans. He'll be gone sooner than you know it.
2 PM EST/11 AM PST: LaSalle vs. Kansas in Kansas City, ESPN. We take a look at the Jayhawks before Cal comes calling.
2 PM EST/11 AM PST: Georgetown vs Washington in Anaheim, FSN HD/CSN Bay Area. The Pac-10's running out of opportunities to notch big OOC wins. Come on Huskies.
4:30 PM EST/1:30 PM PST: Mississippi St vs UCLA in Anaheim, FSN HD/CSN Bay Area. See the Georgetown-Washington game.
5 PM EST/2 PM PST: Marquette at Wisconsin, ESPN2. These...
7 PM EST/4 PM PST: Virginia Tech at Penn St, ESPN2. ...games...
9 PM EST/6 PM PST: Purdue at Alabama, ESPN2. ...interesting.

Man, who voted for McCoy? I don’t think he’ll even make the top 3. And it’s not like we have Texas fans on the blog…right?
Proud to hold season tickets to the only NBA team soon to be owned by a Russian oligarch.
The question isn't who DESERVES to win the Heisman
I think McCoy takes it because he’s one of the trifecta QBs over the last three years who didn’t win it and people like his story/career. I think Suh SHOULD win it if it were to go to the best college football player. I’d have to put Gerhart up there, too, but he won’t get it ‘cause his team is not in the title hunt (although that’s not supposed to matter).
I'd like to smell the Roses before I die.
It’s strange though that the writers I’ve heard reveal their votes have chosen Suh… think it’ll be close

In the words of the Whitest Kids you Know
IT’S SATURDAY!!!!
In communist Russia, Sanchez declares YOU!
The SWAC is so weird. Who decides not to play in the FCS playoffs?
I believe the Ivy league does the same thing.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Also like the Ivy League the SWAC doesn’t offer a full complement of athletic scholarships.

Harbaugh may not be gone after all…
Here’s the statement from Harbaugh:
"Though the rumor mill has been running full gear, my resolve and future proudly remains as head coach at Stanford University.
"The reports of the last 24 hours are untrue, though I respect the University of Kansas and athletic director Lew Perkins.
"I trust this puts an end to these rumors and reports, allowing the focus of fans and the media to shine a bright spotlight on Toby Gerhart today. I love Toby and our players and coaches at Stanford, and as Toby told reporters, I am a Stanford man."
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
we’ll see. Brian Kelly was saying the same thing.

I wish there was a full slate of CFB on today. I do love the festivities of the army-navy game.
Anyone who watches the Heisman ceremony gets flag’d for encouraging The Establishment to keep it up.

I’m actually surprised we’re getting even one game today. I thought the first weekend in December was the last legal weekend to schedule a football game?
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Got a pretty good slate of
Pac-10 hoops, CAL WVB IN ELITE 8, Army/Navy
plus, don’t you have a son to look after?

Makes me wish the BCS teams would have an actual playoff.
Toby Gerhardt – finished second in the closest ever? Man, call that a winner if he plays in any other region, no? I’m pissed. Fuck Alabama and a sophomore. Give it to Toby. Or Suh.
Yup – the fascinating thing is that it was the Northeast that handed it to Ingram not the South. You know, the region where they are three hours ahead and don’t like college football.

Everyone should be watching “The U” on ESPN. Simply awesomely done (unlike the majority of the 30 for 30s up to this point – there is a reason they gave it two hours.)
Never been more proud that my first Cal game was a blowout loss to the Canes in 90.
Ha, never thought they would show that much of that game. I don’t remember any of that…then again, I was 7 at the time.

I loved the part about the NCAA unsportsmanlike conduct video which they called “A Miami highlight tape”
“I think they made that video from the Cal game”
by Tedfordisgod on Dec 12, 2009 8:55 PM PST up reply actions
That was a 31-24 game early in the 4th Q before Miami blew our doors off with 21 unanswered points. The Canes had something like 600 yards total offense that day.
Praise be to Tedford!
Yes, it was
Amazing how close they were to 3 straight national titles in the late 80s.
Praise be to Tedford!
Really it was close to seven straight
86 – undefeated, but lose to Oklahoma in Sugar Bowl
87 – won
88 – only loss to ND on a bad call. ND wins national championship.
89 – won
90 – I think finished second in nation, but have losses to BYU and ND. Year of the infamous Cotton Bowl win over Texas
91 – won
92 – 11-0 but lost Sugar Bowl to Alabama.
That is pretty amazing.

Come on, Avi, you KNOW we’d never live it down. Ever. A Furdie winning the Heisman? Makes my skin crawl.
Did he deserve it more that Ingram? Probably – but neither of them deserved to win it, as Suh was clearly the most impressive player in college football. I would have had an angry knot in my stomach for who knows HOW long if Gerhart had won. I… I can’t even fathom it.
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
I couldn’t agree more. I don’t care if Gerhart was the most deserving player in the history of college football – I wanted him to lose! I know, I know. That makes me petty and small-minded. But you know what I have discovered? When it comes to furdies, being petty and small-minded feels really, really good!
November 20, 1982 - a date that will live in famy.
I think that Gerhart was robbed
He was by far the most outstanding player in the country, he did everything he could to keep Stanford in the games. Even though I can’t stand Stanford, it’s just another example of East Coast bias.
Gerhart wasn’t the only Pac-10 running back that deserved a chance at the Heisman. There’s a freshman in Eugene named LaMichael James who deserved a trip to New York.
He played in one less game and had one less touchdown than Ingram, he had just under 50 yards less than Ingram, but averaged way better in yards per carry and yards per game.
Also, the East Coast likes to portray the Pac-10 as weak. Well the Pac-10 had five teams in the top 50 in offense and five teams in the top 50 in total defense. Where as the SEC had 42 percent of their teams in the top 50 for defense and 33 percent of their teams in the top 50 for offense.
Individual players the Pac-10 had better pass rushers and better players that got after the offensive players in the backfield.
You seem to not have heard of this Ndamukong Suh fellow. Perhaps you should read up on him.

Right, because if he’s not either the ball carrier or tackling the ball carrier he’s not involved with the play. Teams shifted their entire blocking schemes and protections to counteract Suh, and as we saw in the Big 12 Championship still couldn’t neutralize him. Suh spearheaded a scoring defense that was second in the country and had similar production in terms of tackles, tackles for loss, sacks, forced fumbles, and interceptions as entire 4 man fronts.

If Stanford played on Thursday night instead of the UO – OSU game, Gerhardt gets the East Coast audience and he wins. I blame (and thank) Harbaugh !
