Initial tests come back "normal" for Best
"Tedford said initial tests had come back normal.
Best had movement in all of his extremities, Cal spokesman Herb Benenson said. Benenson also said that a preliminary evaluation showed Best sustained a concussion, but more tests were being done before a final diagnosis would be announced by the school. Tedford didn't know whether Best would be kept in the hospital over night."

Thank God. I don’t care if we lose every other game of the season as long as Jahvid’s OK. My thoughts are with him.

Rec'd
I was in the stands and thought it was another spectacular touchdown at first. Then we saw Shane freaking out and realized Jahvid had somehow caught some ridiculous air en route to the endzone. He’d gone down behind a gaggle of people and we could only see his feet, unmoving.
I can’t think of another 15 minutes of my life longer than that one. I really don’t care about our last 3 games at this point. I just want Jahvid to be ok.
This is wonderful news. I would give up every win this season for Jahvid to be OK. My prayers are with him and his family.

Such good news
I was up on Tightwad for the game. Hearing the stadium fall so silent was extremely eerie. I have never heard a stadium, Cal or otherwise, be so quiet. We knew it was bad when we saw the team huddling around him. I’m just glad to hear he is ok. I hope he makes a speedy recovery and doesn’t get too eager to get back on the field that he risks his health.

I wonder if there is any way we can pass along our messages to Jahvid and his family. He’s such a great guy, and he should know that every Golden Bear is behind him 100%. He means so much more to our family than just his football abilities.

I'm sure you can write the athletic department
or the football office, greeting cards or other well-wishes would in all likelihood find their way to jahvid and his family. i kind of want to send something myself.

Remember, the enemy's end zone is DOWN!
Glad to hear it’s probably nothing too serious, though you always worry about lingering effects with injuries like this.
In any case, the game became a lot less important in the grand scheme of things. Thoughts and prayers to Jahvid and his family.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Multiple concussions
end careers. One needs to only look at the career of Steve Young (among others)
Sure it’s only 2, but it’s 2 within a week.
I don’t really get CFB helmets. They fly off way too easily.

The “two within a week” has me really worried. I’m sure he’ll be okay in the long run and he’ll play again soon, but I’m afraid we’ve seen Best in a Cal uniform for the last time…
Whose domicile? OUR DOMICILE!
At the very least he’ll miss next week, IMO and I wouldn’t be surprised if he is rested for the remainder of the season (including the bowl game).
I almost want him NOT to play another game this season. Let him get that first signing bonus from the NFL.
too true
I should clarify: by not too serious, I meant there was no paralysis or anything else life-threatening. After watching the injury, you kinda say ‘screw the football career, i just hope the rest of his life is normal’, and the initial reports seem to suggest that that will be the case.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Anyway to see a replay of the entire sequence? Not just high(low)light clips? From the student section all I saw was him flying, the OSU safety bumping/hitting, and him dropping out of sight. Then we cheered. Then we didn’t.
Mm,
That’s what I’ve already seen, a lowlight version; I’m talking about a recording of the stream, all 20 minutes or so.
All they did in that 20 minutes
was show the replay about 100 times (it was overkill), talk about how the guy who hit him didn’t do it maliciously, and try to pass the time. You didn’t miss much. If you catch a youtube clip with both camera angles, you’ll see enough.
Whose domicile? OUR DOMICILE!
I was so relieved to hear Best can move his limbs and he’s doing okay. Okay as in, not dead or paralyzed. All I saw at first was someone getting loaded onto a stretcher while I was at dinner with some friends, and then when we got back to the car and put the game on the radio, I heard it was Best. I just saw the play when he fell, and when he came down I swear I thought he was dead. He was stiff and that shocked look on his face…it turned my stomach.
I think he’s an amazing player and person. All I want is for him to recover. Football is great, but he needs to focus on his health right now.

Am I the only one who feels incredibly uncomfortable by this photo?

Jeeze, his head has to be about 8 feet up in the air at that point.
Really glad he’s not critically injured.
What a relief that it sounds like Jahvid will be OK. After watching the medics bring in the stretchers, and the crowd remaining silent for 15 minutes, I could only imagine worst. There were no replays in the stadium and with limited cell service, we were left to wonder about Jahvid’s condition for the rest of the game. It’s one thing to witness something like that on TV happening to another team; it’s another experience entirely to witness it firsthand only a few hundred feet away from you. As I was leaving the stadium and finally got the update that it was “only” a concussion, it was an incredible relief, and frankly, that news alone made the day’s events feel like a victory.
Not sure if anyone else on the east side noticed, but while Jahvid was laying motionless on the field there was a shooting-star/meteorite/fireball that came down in the sky to the southwest. Obviously a total coincidence, but an interesting one nonetheless.

We were all really confused about that meteorite thing, too. Superman returning to his home planet? What was that?

Man...
Thank God Jahvid will be okay for the most part. That was really scary there for a while. Two concussions in such a short time span are incredibly worrisome overall. My hopes and prayers are with him…

Yeah
I almost cried during the game. Jahvid is such a great guy, and I want him to succeed and do as well as possible. It was terrifying to see him fly that high and fall that hard. I just want him to be healthy.
I've been Honked...
Collins...
I finally had a chance to see the reply this morning, and what troubles me is the OSU defender, Collins not just pushing Best higher into the air, but also INTO the end zone, not trying to knock him back into the field of play.
IMHO, it appears he’s hurling Jahvid towards the sidelines, but Best has already crossed the goalline and his actions seem superfluous at that point. I’ll agree that the entire sequence is one long continuation, but I’m hoping someone here will tell me that Collins wasn’t trying to deliberately hurt Jahvid.
I had memories of what the Oregon O-line did to Daryl Skaugstad’s knees years ago…
OSU #5 player Collins
I hope that he issues an apology or is at least suspended for his play on Best. Best was clearly in the air in a vulnerable position, clearly is in the end zone, as Collins goes out of his way to try to throw him out of bounds. I hope there is some punishment for his play there as his play possibly ended Best’s career at Cal.
Collins should be neither suspended or apologize. There is no rule against hitting someone in a vulnerable position. I guarantee you Collins suffered enough when Best was on the ground.

Oh yeah, I agree.
I’m just puzzled by the directional nature of Collin’s hit. He is not only pushing Best up, but also out. Granted, out of bounds, but over the goal line nonetheless. I just find it interesting that he’s pushing Best in the direction that a defense wouldn’t want the play to go towards…
From those pictures, it looks like he started the tackle before Best crossed the goal line. As Best’s momentum carried him forward, I think Collins tried to “track” Best. In other words, he started pushing Best at the goal line, and tried to maintain contact as Best crossed into the end zone. This results in Best’s body torquing and a loss of control as his legs go up while he starts falling.
I have been trying to get any updates on Best. Nothing has been updated on SF Gate as of 2pm ET. Any news? I think this is the last we have seen of Best in a Cal jersey. I hope he can play again.
Re: Collins- I realize that football is a contact sport. However, Best has crossed the goal line and trying to push him out of bounds wasn’t going to negate the TD. Has he issued any sort of public apology? Sorry, but his play cost us our top RB and I would like to at least hear him acknowlege the end result of his action.
Postgame quote
“I think they were in the wildcat. I was in the middle of the field and I ran to the outside. He went airborne into the end zone, and I tried to tackle him. I hope he is all right. I believe he came down wrong. It is really unfortunate. I wish the best for him, the Cal team, and his family. As a team, we took a knee and said a quick prayer for him. As a competitor you never want to see something like that happen to anyone.”
