Honestly, even though we scored more than 3 pts, this was worse that USC and Oregon due to Best’s injury. Hope hes okay.

Same thoughts here. No football game is ever worth that sort of injury.

Worst day of football in a long time
The Furd won. Best with a freakish injury and probably out for season. We lost.
Sigh.
So glad that he only had a concussion and it wasn’t anything serious

Oh it isn’t there yet, we still have Big Game to salvage things. But when you add the Jahvid injury and the way we’ve gotten beat, it’s as bad as that season was 9 games into the season.

Best's injury by far trumps anything that happened in '07
… in my eyes. Don’t think he’ll be playing for the rest of the season and in all honesty, given his back-to-back concussions, I wouldn’t even want him to. Just hope that he makes a complete recovery.
It’s really heart-breaking… he’s truly been one of our classiest star athletes. Not to say anyone else would have deserved to be hurt like that.

I dunno man… I dunno. It is NOT looking good. The way they’re playing, combined with the way we’re playing?? I hate to admit it, but Toby Gerhardt scares me.

The consistent thread between '07 and '09
Is that many rated Cal highly while overlooking apparent flaws in both teams. Granted, the flaws in the 2007 team were more readily apparent, even with the 5-0 start. This year’s team showed some chinks the armor during the Minnesota game, especially with the pass defense and inability to put consistent pressure on the QB, and maybe even some signs of the O-line difficulties. It wasn’t until Oregon that we were truly exposed in all areas.
We are what we are. The bright side is that we are wallowing in being 6-3 (3-3). It’s a lot better than wallowing in a losing record and struggling to become bowl eligible. And we can still improve. We have 3 games left, with plenty (in my opinion) to play for.
As Bruce Snyder said back in the day: Cal only goes forward. Learn from today. Regroup. Beat Arizona. Beat stanfurd and retain the Axe. And beat Washington.
We can do all those things. Really.

What is most confusing is how poorly the O-line did against a front seven that was apparently not very good. They did a serviceable job against ASU, which has a great defense, but they were abused and embarrassed today.

USC and ASU are trying to out-penalty one another. If ASU wasn’t so poorly disciplined, they’d have the ball and be driving against USC late in the 4th with a chance to win.

Dunno what all the negativity is about. I’m ecstatic. I honestly thought Jahvid might be paralyzed for at least an hour. Dudes moving around, and I couldn’t be happier. Who cares who won the game.

Seriously, I was just about brought to tears when Jahvid was down and not moving. I was scared. Really scared for him. I tried to care about the game again, but I was watching/listening to the game just as much (if not more) to find out any Jahvid health updates as I was to watch the actual game. As a fan, I lost my focus on the football game. If Jahvid really is okay, I’m happy, too.

I thought how I woulda not known how bad the injury was if I were at memorial. The closeup shot with his unconscious body for us that saw the game on TV instantly put best’s health and whatever the outcome of this cal football game on completely different levels.
I would think the fans would just think it was just another random injury like a bruise or hard hit.
Don’t know what they showed on the replay screen either at Memorial. But man, I’m so happy Best looks like he’s going to be ok. At that point it was right away the worst game I’ll ever see and hope I ever see, regardless of what the outcome was.
And also, I really do hope Riley is ok. I don’t know how he came back into the game after that helmet to helmet hit. He clearly got a concussion. Looks like it wasn’t too bad (but you never know with those hits) but yeah, worst cal football game ever.
by nickle on Nov 7, 2009 9:25 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
They never showed a replay on the big screen. The fans cheered wildly for about 10 seconds before the severity of the situation became apparent. It became apparent when other Cal players started waving trainers over frantically and some OSU players kneeled in prayer in the end zone. That REALLY freaked us out, the OSU players praying.
We couldn’t really see anything when the trainers medical staff got around him. Information was limited, but we got some texts later in the game that indicated he had movement in his extremities and had suffered a concussion.

Watching on tv was a completely different situation. When I was watching live I saw how his body went completely stiff as soon as he landed, I knew it was seriously wrong right when it happened. Knowing that immediately and then having to wait 15 minutes without being able to see anything because of all the people around him and not being informed if he was able to move or not was just scary.
by Missing Barry on Nov 7, 2009 9:57 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly. On tv, the play was still going b/c it seemed like best might have fumbled the ball and the ref didn’t know exactly wat was going on, and the players were jumping onto the ball wildly in the endzone. Right next to Best’s unconscious body. It is remarkable that no one seemed to get in contact with best after he hit the ground, possibly making a dangerous situation much much worse. On tv, you knew right away this was bad, and not just a regular injury bad but something was really, really wrong.
by nickle on Nov 7, 2009 10:11 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not sure it really hit me until I saw some of the medical staf running around frantically and they ran over to the side of the field and grabbed one of those giant wooden stabilization boards. When they picked that up, then everything changed. That and when I saw Best’s family rush over.

It is remarkable that no one seemed to get in contact with best after he hit the ground, possibly making a dangerous situation much much worse.
No, someone was there. In the replay a Cal player was kneeling at his side almost immediately after he came to a stop. I’m pretty sure players were frantically motioning for trainers at this point-it was actually the only way any of us in QQ knew something was wrong; my friend immediately pointed out that Vereen was freaking out and we realized Best’s feet, sticking out from behind the gaggle of people at the endzone, weren’t moving.
by BleedinBlue on Nov 7, 2009 10:51 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Aftermath
There was a Cal player, and I didn’t catch who it was, who kneeled at Best’s side and immediately began motioning for the medical staff to get out there now. I had a good angle on what happened as well, sitting low in the end zone, and I was worried the moment he hit the ground.
I watched for movement and didn’t see any. I wasn’t sure if the injury was to his lower back or because his head landed on the turf. I wasn’t thinking concussion at the time. I was thinking paralysis.
The minutes that followed were endless, with Jahvid’s mother at his side, the players kneeling, and the medical staff at work. His departure on a stretcher went through the south tunnel, right underneath my seats. Best was covered by a white sheet, except for his head. It was very unsettling.

Just got back from the game. What an odd scene today. I found it difficult to really focus on the game after the accident. We won, we lost, that didn’t really matter. Seeing Jahvid’s family come over to him and follow him off the field, that was so heart breaking. To us, he’s just a football player. To them, hes a brother. A son. Maybe there are a lot of problems with Cal football, I don’t know. All I know is that, apparently, Jahvid is OK and that makes me feel happy. That’s all that matters right now.

Our volleyball team just knocked off #4 Washington in their house. Five sets… but it wasn’t a fluke, we beat them physically and statistically. Hana and Carli were awesome.
This is especially cool since:
1) We beat #24 Wazzu last night
2) #4 Washington swept #5 Stanford in three sets last night and if they would’ve just beaten us, they would’ve most certainly jumped #3 Hawaii for #3 overall.
3) Washington hates us… I mean they hate Cal.
4) Jahvid is okay.

Okay, rant time.
So, around the third quarter some fans sitting behind me are obviously running out of patience with how the game is going, so they go into total Riley nitpick mode.
When the pocket is collapsing and he throws to get rid of the ball:
Oh yeah, great throw Riley. You’ll get the Heisman for sure.
When he has two guys hanging on him and he attempts to get the ball off to one of our receivers:
Nice throw Riley. How about actually throwing it to him.
When Tucker dropped a pass thrown to him:
Good job Riley. How about finding someone who’s actually open next time.
So when they got up with about seven minutes left in the game, they were discussing on whether to leave early or not. I turned and said:
Yeah, get the fuck out of here.
Wanna know why I said that? Because it’s not Riley’s goddamn fault. You’d have to be a total idiot to think that those issues I’ve quoted were all because of Riley and not because of, oh I don’t know, our severely lacking O-line that can’t block halfway-decent pass rushes? (Not to mention WRs that have dropitis, but that’s not the main focus of this rant)
Seriously, I miss who we had last year, because whoever is our current o-line coach is really not doing his job properly. Without a stable o-line, you can’t have a passing attack. Without a passing attack, you need to rely on the run but when your run is stopped, that really leaves your team in a bit of a bind now, does it?
But no, with idiots like the ones in H section, it’s always the quarterback’s fault! Because we don’t take kindly to logic in them there parts!
Now I’m not saying that all of Riley’s miscues were the o-line’s fault, there were a few that he should have avoided tonight, but the most obvious ones that should have fallen on the o-line were blamed on Riley as well.
“Cal football: home of blaming the QB for everything!”
As for the game itself, glad to hear that Jahvid is doing okay. Some story floating around our section was that he had broken both one of his arms and one of his legs (didn’t he land on his back or possibly his neck?), but really happy to hear that it’s only as much as a concussion.

I don’t like our oline coach very much either and think we need to find another coach at that position.
There’s been a significant drop w/ our oline compared to our pretty consistent years before. Like they say, you never know how good you had it til it’s gone. We had it pretty good.

You're right on the money
Although I’m still convinced that Riley suffers from the yips at times, the o-line today was absolute fucking trash, and the fact that Riley could even do what little he did today is a feat in and of itself.
There was an interesting thread going around on the Scout board about how we’ve stopped paying as much attention as we’ve used to to our o-line recruiting, and I think it shows. I don’t know how much of this is to blame on Marshall versus just a lack of talent issue, but something is clearly off.
Also, I am convinced that Cheadle is simply atrocious. I don’t mean to single him out, but I couldn’t help but notice today how horribly he played.

People shouted “Riley, you suck!” and “Put in Sweeney!” Geez people, he’s just a college athlete, pretty much the same age as you; don’t boo him. Not like we’re paying him exorbitant amounts to suck (And I know all about that. I’m a Giants fan.)

u are correct sir! O-line sux..QB sux, playcalling sux, .skill guys have gotten worse than last year. there’s no excuse, it’s typical…this cal team is like any cal team from the 60s on… It’s a culture of losing…a culture that lets a bunch of nerd professors (see the sf chron this week) dictate too much regarding cals funding. happens every year…other schools don’t let this happen. Berkeley’s a cauldron of mediocrity. The school’s going downhill because of the culture…We need winners, from the top down. Chancellor, AD, coaches…it’s got to change. don’t let the professors dicatate what happens! they are all a bunch of liberal dorks who got beat up in high school. losers! we need winners who support our athletes!

I think Barbour and Birgeneau have been very supportive of Cal athletics, so it would be unfair to to say that we lack “winners” from the top down.
It’s about better developing the talent that we already have on our team, which is not supposed to be anywhere as mediocre as it appears to be on the field.
As to which coaches to point fingers to? Alamar is one, obviously. But it seems like people are divided on Gregory and Marshall, although I’ve grown disillusioned with both.

BTW, solid chance that the Civil War is for the Rose Bowl again this year. OSU has WSU and UW next, so they could be 6-2 going into the Civil War. Oregon has ASU at home and then they are at Arizona. I could see them losing at Arizona, which would put them at 6-2, also. Even if they win both, if they are 7-1 going into the Civil War, then if OSU wins they would have the tie-breakre. Civil War is at Autzen, so advantage Oregon, there. Although it wasn’t an advantage to have it at Reiser for OSU last year. Who knows?
Arizona has to lose more for this to happen. Hopefully, that starts next week. And I don’t know how USC having the win over OSU complicates matters. But could be a very interesting end to the season again.

This situation gets very complicated
If OSU wins out, Oregon wins everything but the civil war, and USC wins out, there would be a three way tie for the Pac-10. In which case the three schools’ records would be compared and since OSU would have 3 losses, they lose the tie breaker to Oregon and USC with 2, and Oregon would win that one having beaten USC. So even if OSU wins the civil war, they would still lose the rose bowl. Oregon would have to lose at Arizona for OSU to have a chance, but since USC beat OSU, they would have that tie breaker; USC would have to have another loss as well.
So, unfortunately, I very much doubt the civil war will determine who goes to the rose bowl (if we had only beaten Arizona, which we should have.)
At this point, the Pac-10 champ is still up in the air. Oregon and Arizona have the best shot having only one loss, so their upcoming game is huge. As is the USC Arizona game. Stanford lost to Oregon and USC, so I don’t see them coming out ahead, and OSU lost to USC and Arizona so we don’t have much of a chance either.

Correct me if I am wrong
But I don’t believe overall record plays into the selection process, does it? In the scenario tied above, the first tiebreaker would be the teams records against each other. That would come out 1-1 for all, so it would then go to the record verses the next highest team (Number 4), whoever it might end up being. This comes from here, which is kind of hard to interpret, so I could be wrong: http://www.pac-10.org/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/111605aac.html
So OSU could still have a shot.

Yeah the language is confusing
I used that site too and gleemed my assesment from this:
When three or more teams are tied in Conference play, if one has defeated all others, it shall be the Rose Bowl representative. If that is not the case, a comparison of the tied teams’ records against the other tied teams shall be made and the team having the best record against the other tied teams shall be the Rose Bowl representative.
It seems if the teams are still tied somehow after that (if they all had the same overall record), then they do the record against the next highest ranked team.

Face it...
We’re not the hot new thing anymore. I don’t care what people say, Tedford has steered away from the more talented, yet more selfish players, like DeSean, and we’re starting to see the effect. We don’t look as large or fast as we’ve been in the past. I remember a recruiting preview about two years ago, and the expert said that Cal’s WR recruits (Tucker et all) weren’t recruited by USC,which is who we’re trying to beat.
Also, you can’t keep changing coaches and expect continuity. Coach Jim leaving meant that our excellent zone blocking left. And as much as I do love Tedford, he’s going to have to figure out what he wants. In big games, he gets too conservative as though trying to lose, while the other coaches are gambling and playing to win.
I wish I can say that I see 10-11 win seasons, but I don’t. I see 7-9 win seasons. When the SAF is built, that might give us an uptick in recruiting. But until then, we’ll have to sette for the new mediocre.

I think it’s telling when OSU’s O-line, which, arguably on paper (and in recruiting rankings) is supposed to be inferior to ours – I also believe I heard the commentators say there were 2 walkons starting in that group – look better than our line, it’s not only just a matter of recruiting better talent, but better developing what we already have, which goes directly to coaching.

Agreed
But which coaches are to blame?
Coach Marshall for O-line woes, I guess that’s clear.
How about the defense? Gregory is the coordinator, but is he in charge of developing the players, too? Do the problems our secondary has fall directly on him? And linebackers; isn’t the consensus that our LB corp this year lacks players needed for a successful 3-4?

I'm on the fence with Gregory
Scheme wise, you do what you can with the players you have. My understanding of the coordinator position is that they handle the schemes, not the players. The change to the 3-4 last year was indicative of that, changing the scheme to fit the skills of our players. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find appropriate replacements and our 4-3 scheme from 07 was bunk.

Like BeastMode said, change for the sake of change can be a good thing. And I don’t know about you, but I can’t remember the last time that our D was able to consistently mount a pass rush against opposing QBs. I’m not talking about particular games out of a season; I’m talking about as a general matter. And we’ve definitely had the talent at times to do so, I would argue.
I remember Brandon Mebane, prior to being drafted, saying something about how Cal’s defensive scheme was too prohibitive or something, and that it didn’t allow him to play as freely as he wanted. I don’t want to place too much emphasis on one player’s quote, but still, it’s a rather interesting observation.

Believe it or not, the facilities aren’t just about bringing in kids who like shiny things. I’m more interested in whether or not the coaching staff can do a better job when they have the best and newest tools to use in making these kids into football players. Right now they can’t even get the whole team in one room for a discussion.

If that weren’t the case, then OSU would be fucked. We can barely even sell out our stadium, and it only holds 45,000 people.

And the football facilities are nice as well: practice fields, weight rooms, locker rooms, etc.
From everything I’ve heard (and correct me if I’m wrong) Cal has outdated EVERYTHING
So while yes, a team can in fact overcome facilities, if you were to visit Cal and Oregon (two very comparable programs, and a lot of players on each were recruited by both), generally, I think Oregon gets the nod, if not for other reasons (i.e. wanna be close to home, weather, etc)

Yeah, I guess a lot of that comes from perception of the schools too
A lot of people see the huge stadiums that Cal, UCLA, and USC play at, or hear about the amazing Oregon facilities, and assume they are much better than the other schools in their conference.
I never personally been inside OSU’s training facillites or weight rooms, or in any of the club levels or sky boxes in Reser Stadium so I can’t really attest to how nice they are either. And I think the fact that Reser stadium is only half remodeled (the other half being 50 years old and looking like a high school stadium) sticks out in a lot of people’s minds too.

I will make the argument, however, that his grace period for RATIONAL criticism to be levied against him (i.e. no “FIRE TEDFORD” chants) should be over at this point. I definitely think he is too loyal with some of his coaching assistants, to a fault. I think that’s a fair knock on him.

A few non-Best thoughts on the game
While Jahvid Best’s injury distracted me, because my concern was more about his welfare than the game, I don’t think it affected the outcome at all.
From the outset, Cal had trouble moving the ball in any sustained way. The team would pick up an occasional first down on a nice pass-and-catch, but usually ended up punting – and often after three downs. The long drive that ended with Best’s touchdown was Cal’s only sustained drive, although it featured three different false start penalties.
The defense seemed pretty helpless. They controlled Jacquizz Rogers pretty well, but the Beaver passing attack moved at will. There was nothing fancy. Their O-line gave the quarterback plenty of time, and he tossed the ball to whoever was open. Someone was always open, the tackling was frequently poor, and the passes were accurate.
That never changed, and so the game lacked any drama because Cal never could stop the Beaver offense.
Once again, the game seemed an example of what happens to Cal when playing a good team.

Expectations
Maybe next year we can be picked to finish 4th and that will fix a lot of our angst. Looking back on our actual results we’ve had one good, almost great, year. The rest of the years were just decent (with the 9 win season also counting as good). Maybe another way to look at it, is that we are slowly building up the program to those lofty expectations, but that we jumped the gun on big expectations. 8 wins a year would be fantastic, that is my expectation. 7 wins feels a little disappointing but its better than the alternatives.

To me a 9 win season counts more than merely “good.”

Are saying that 2004 wasn’t a great year? Plus, 2006 was a 10-win year too. Also, we have three games left – we don’t know what will happen – we could still end up with 9 or even 10 wins including the bowl game. That is why sports are great.

Yeah, 2006 was a good year too since it was really 10 wins. I ammend my post, so we’ve had two good years which we have to be happy with. But I stick to the non-great analysis. 9 wins is still not a “Great” year and neither was 2004. It’s not a great year if its not a BCS bid – BCS = great year. Winning 10 and getting smoked/embarrased in the Holiday Bowl doesn’t count as great (but still a good season as I said)

I noted at least two blown plays from B. Johnson (25) from my cheap seat in section J (Southwest corner) . One was a roughly 50 yard reception in the the first Q by Halhuni, and a second one to Adeniji in the 3rd for another 15 or so. How are DB’s being coached, that’s my question. If they move in on the pass as if they’re linebackers when they are the over the top protection, they are going to continue to be too late. In both cases. In the TE pass (Halhuni) the missed tackle appeared to be an astonishingly bad angle for a safety and led to about 35 yards after the catch.
