Rivalry Weekend Evening Thread
Texas Tech at Baylor, in progress, FSN HD/CSN Bay Area--One of these years Mike Leach is going to leave Lubbock, isn't he? He'll lose his inner pirate out there.
The Apple Cup, in progress, FSN Northwest--If Washington beats Wazzu by 30, I'll be seriously concerned for next week's game. Ah, what the hell, I'm majorly concerned for next week's game. It SCREAMS letdown.
Arkansas at LSU, 7 PM EST/4 PM PST, ESPN HD--Arkansas has pulled wins out of their back pocket against Les Miles. Here's hoping for another one!
Tennessee at Kentucky, 7 PM EST/4 PM PST, ESPNU--Want an interesting stat? NONE of the SEC teams Florida or Alabama have played has more than four conference wins. Not one great team they've played this season in-conference, and it's not like they've been pulling away with these either.
Notre Dame at Furd, 8 PM EST/5 PM PST, ABC or ESPN2--Okay Trees, we have what we wanted. Go end Charlie Weis's career so they can find another 'genius' who'll go 8-4 every season.
Georgia at Georgia Tech, 8 PM EST/5 PM PST, ABC or ESPN2--Been awhile since I've seen a Paul Johnson offense in action. Should be entertaining.
UCLA at USC, 10 PM EST/7 PM PST, FSN HD/CSN Bay Area--All this talk about how UCLA is ready to steal USC's thunder will look utterly silly once it's 21-0 in the first quarter. Follow along here or check out the USC perspective at Conquest Chronicles.
Navy at Hawaii, 10:30 PM EST/7:30 PM PST, ESPNU--What a great dealie for the Naval Academy. Plus more triple option versus a team that throws the ball all the time. Football philosophy diverges!

Unbelievable
Reesing was sacked for a safety with 2:45 left in that game. Kansas up by one with Missouri receiving the ball.

Wow…that is a pathetic way to lose a game. If they had just been able to punt it away – Missouri needed field goal just to tie it, not win. Things aren’t going to get easier from Mangino.

Some of the stats are kinda unfair because fanbases with huge numbers (USC) distort some of the results.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Also, Cal is the least hated team in the country.
Oregon State fans are very confused about who their biggest rival is:
Oregon 93.9% Stanford 1% Arizona 1% USC 1% California 1% UCLA 1%
I am very confused by those results. Who the hell is voting that thinks that Cal and OSU are big rivals?

They haven’t had to rely on it much, but their QB play definitely sucks. If they fall behind in the second half, they’re going to have a tough time coming back. Also, their defense has been suspect, as it has allowed crappy teams to hang around (or make surprising comebacks) before the offense seals the game in the fourth.

but seriously, because this is what the furd is getting, I’m feeling a bit jealous of the whole turnaround in which one of our backs is going to be the most celebrated.
If we aren’t undefeated and heading for a Rose Bowl, I think I would give up the BG for Best to get the Heisman because that would be the best thing for Cal football.
….I mean, I’m happy for your sentiments, but I have no idea how a Big Game loss would get Best the Heisman.
Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com
No, I don’t mean the loss would lead directly to it. I just meant in one of those hypothetical – Would you trade this thing for that thing. Of course, a huge BG win with Best running for 2 TDs, returning punts for 2 TDs, throwing for 1, kicking a 52 yard field goal, returning a pick 6 to seal the 73-0 victory would be better. Cuz he could do that
Nope
Big Game is waaaaaaaaay more important than the heisman. plus, there is absolutely ZERO chance toby wins the Heisman. It’s going to Tebow, Mcoy, or Ingram
I've been Honked...
On a side note: Why is Spiller even in the Heisman conversation, hes not even a 1000 yard back. Give me a break.
His case isn’t as strong since he didn’t manage to do anything against South Carolina, but he kind of filled the void left by Jahvid when Cal hit the skids—the big play back who can run, catch, return, and look scary good while doing it.

We always knew Pete Carroll lacked class. Maybe Neuheisal also lacks class. But nothing Neuheisal did, to me, justified Carroll’s actions.
President Emperor Warlord Of The Sun!

I don’t think that Carroll lacks class, personally. Neuheisel’s timeout was a huge lack of class. The game was over, if Neuheisel wants the game to continue, then USC is totally justified throwing the ball.

Look, there is, in my view, absolutely NO justification for making that play. None. No. Period.
I know that in my business if somebody pulls a dick move on me (and Im not ENTIRELY sure that the TO was a dick move, Neu was trying to get the ball back and win the game no matter how feint a chance that was), I take the highest road available. Eh. It was unnecessary, but I’m not surprised. There had been a lot of talk about how UCLA are closing the gap from the UCLA side, and the coaches don’t exactly like one another.
I doubt it will change anyone’s minds about Pete Carroll one way or the other. There’s a tendency towards overkill.
I have to admit, it made me laugh – in a very disapproving way, of course. Just don’t ever do something like that to US!

Game was over, USC was trying to end it, Neuheisel calls timeout, USC responds by throwing a 50 yard bomb for a TD and a 28-7 lead. UCLA gets made, whole team comes out to midfield. Boo hoo, Bruins deserved it for not losing with dignity.
by Tedfordisgod on Nov 28, 2009 10:38 PM PST up reply actions
I guess I’m a dick like Pete Carroll. But I don’t quite think the TD at the end was that bad. Sure, the classy thing to do would be to just kneel or run the ball. But I don’t think it’s that out of line to just run another pass play. AFterall, UCLA wanted the ball back. They have a better chance getting a turnover via INT than fumble.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
Yeah, and they were kneeling down at that point. You just gotta let the game end if you are Neuheisel.
by Tedfordisgod on Nov 28, 2009 10:41 PM PST up reply actions
Which is why it’s a dick move by Carroll. The good football decision for Carroll is to order up another knee or a rush and put the game away NOT give a chance for a turnover and whatever sort of crazy ass TD+onside+TD type scenario is possible at that point.
Yeah, I just think that Carroll’s move is totally justified by Neuheisel’s move. Neuheisel needs to regularly be reminded that he is both a bad coach and a bad person.

usage Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that "there is no such word." There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.

Carroll’s play-call was just plain embarrassing. Both coaches, teams, fan bases, and universities should be ashamed of themselves. Tedford did the sporting thing. And I know thats what I would have done. But deep down, it would I also wish that we had an asshole on our side to take the moral hits that would have gotten us to the Rose Bowl. it’s true that it wouldn’t have mattered only because the Big 12 voters dropped CAL 10 spots through collusion in order to get TX up there.
We lost votes to Texas the week we beat up on the Furd too. Let’s not be revisionist about this, Cal could’ve put 50 on the board against S. Miss and they’d have lost the bid to Texas.

fuck the system
The system sucks, I’d rather have a classy program than a little more money for the conference and a game on a different day.
the problem is that CFB is just so crazy... upsets left and right
a playoff system would be nice, but a playoff system with the upsets of 2007 would’ve been messed up too. I think in the end the 2007 bowl results were still acceptable to me.
A playoff in 2007 would be awesome. You’d get some really fun matchups with some combination of West Virginia, LSU, Virginia Tech, Missouri, Oklahoma, USC, tOSU, Georgia, and I guess Hawaii all in the mix.

Tedford doesn’t really punch in a score all too often. It either happens because our running game is just too awesome or because the Ruins efense has no D.

because usually I find myslef PRAYING that we run another TD to cover the spread…. but I’ve never seen it happen

watching SC now...
but they’re talking about bball now =/
U.C. Los Angeles should be grateful to Pete Carroll. Now they have something to talk about other than how crappy their football team played and how horrible their basketball team is.
November 20, 1982 - a date that will live in famy.
…but the thing is, they’re using what Pete did to say that their team will use it as inspiration to get better and play with a chip on their shoulder next season.

They can get an at-large bowl bid. Or even a Pac-10 one if one of the bowls decides to pick UCLA. Which would be odd.
that worked out well this year

Riiiggghht. Because UCLA has never before played with a chip on its shoulder with respect to USC.
Carroll’s move was ridiculous, and I’d be pissed, too, if I were a Bruin. But the whiny antics of Nestor and the BN crew are even more embarrassing than anything the two coaches displayed. Quite frankly, if BN represents the UCLA fan base—and that’s a big “if”—then the Bruins got exactly what they deserved.

yes?
I think 2005 was their only good season in the last couple of years… but even then I SWEAR it was a terrible team. Sure they ran up big numbers here and there but SC demolished them because they had NO DEFENSe… They got lucky that year
got blown out by Arizona too
28-0 I remember… in like 4 games or so (including against Cal), they had dramatic last minute comebacks. Not because they were GOOD, but because the opposing team self destructed..
Similarly UCLA bball demolished Gonzaga in the final 8 minutes… thus SCREWING OVER my NCAA bracket and reuslting in my friend beating me… Ugh. I HATED UCLA that year. I laughed my ass off when Reggie Bush ran 250 yards in the first half of the game though.
I said it before and I’ll say it again, Neuhizzy prolly ain’t too mad, because you know he bet the over.

Pete Carroll has won a ton of Pac-10 titles in a row
all it takes is Bush bringing in a cool million while in school, Jarrett living rent free, tons of recruiting violations, etc etc.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
Jarrett did not live rent free. He was sharing an off-campus apartment with Leinart, and Leinart’s dad made up the difference between their housing allowance and the rent. When Leinart’s dad realized it was an infraction, he self-reported. Jarrett was told to make up the difference in the form of a charitable donation, and they sorted it out.
I got nothing to say in favor of Bush though.
ah thanks for clearing that up
maybe Leinart’s dad made up the difference by selling Eric Wright’s leftover ecstasy?

Service academies play some good ball. They’re just undersized because they have to meet military fitness guidelines during the off season.
And because they don’t really have access to the blue chip recruits, but yeah, Army, Navy, and Air Force are solid. Just wouldn’t want to watch them play for a national championship.

Twitter trending topics: USC, UCLA, Pete Carroll
Everyone is an $C fan on there.
Now they’re flaming about the SC bias in the world on BruinsNation. Really sucks to be a Bruin tonight =[
true but damn all the bandwagon fans
it’s kinda disgusting.
LA Times weighs in...
The best duel didn’t even occur between the quarterbacks, but the head coaches, when a final-minute taunt by UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel was turned into a touchdown by USC Coach Pete Carroll.
With USC holding the ball at the UCLA 48-yard line and running out the clock on a 21-7 lead, Carroll classily ordered Barkley to take a knee.
Despite the fact that it was second down, Neuheisel then inexplicably called a timeout.
Carroll responded by ordering Barkley to throw deep on the next play to Damian Williams, which he did, and Williams caught it inside the 10-yard line and streaked into the end zone for a touchdown.
After which the jubilant Trojans danced out on to the field, causing the UCLA players to run on to the field, leading to one referee being steamrollered by a Bruin while the players were barely kept apart.
What was Neuheisel thinking? Why would he spit on Carroll’s goodwill like that? In the history of this series, few coaching moves have ever been so dumb.
He sure as fuck would not have done that to us.

Before everyone leaves...
During the phone conversation on Friday, Tiger told his friend, “I have to run to Zales to get a ‘Kobe Special.’” The person on the other end of the phone asked Tiger what a “Kobe Special” was. The reply — “A house on a finger.”
During the conversation, Tiger said his wife had “gone ghetto” on him.
As we first reported, Tiger told the friend his wife had scratched his face up during an argument over a report that the golf great had cheated on her. The “other woman” named in the story — Rachel Uchitel — calls the report “bulls**t.”
Of course, the Kobe reference is the now-famous house/ring he gave his wife Vanessa after the whole Colorado thing. We’re assuming Tiger was joking, though he can certainly afford it.

I went to Conquest Chronicles to make a few jokes, but some of those denizens didn’t take too kindly. Now, I think nerves are a bit raw and I appreciate the fact that some might not get my own brand of laid-back adult contemporary music. Fair enough. So, I tried to make nice nice and calm the sitch down.
But I think this guy wins the award for least self-awareness ever. He even writes it into the post. Either I want to physically assault this guy for being every USC marching band stereotype there is or his post is an subtle performance art garde piece of staggering genius. I’m leaning towards the physical assault:
i went to almost every stadium with the band and cal fans were BY FAR the rudest. wasn’t even close… completely classless.
President Emperor Warlord Of The Sun!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
Hahaha, of course someone in their band would think that. Goes with putting on the uniform and choosing to be in an organization that calls themselves “the best band in the universe” and fully believes it behind douchetastic sunglasses, and represents a man only second to Carroll in his asholishness: Art Bartner. I’d remind of some history, but I don’t think it would matter.
TrojanCBB is a well known TommyT suck-up.
He’s the main reason I don’t visit the Niners Nation Blog much. He takes his USC arrogance there, too.
