Rivalry Weekend Afternoon Thread
Florida St. at Florida, 3:30 PM EST/12:30 PM PST, CBS: Can Bobby Bowden pull off the ultimate upset in Gainesville and stick it to his haters? My guess is 'NO'.
Arizona at Arizona St., 3:30 PM EST/12:30 PM PST, ABC on the West Coast, ESPN360.com elsewhere: Look out people; the Wildcats are in danger of losing their last two games. They're short favorites to win this week and will be underdogs next week in LA. What was once a rosy scenario could end up as 7-5.
Missouri at Kansas, 3:30 PM EST/12:30 PM PST, ABC in Big 12 Areas: The Border War might be the nastiest of all the college football rivalries--there is true pre-Civil War emnity brewing on both sides. This could also be your last chance to see Mark Mangino wobble along the sidelines.
Virginia Tech at Virginia, 3:30 PM EST/12:30 PM PST, ESPN to most of the country, ABC elsewhere: THIS is the game that gets national coverage? Nice deal ABC.
Miami at South Florida, 3:30 PM EST/12:30 PM PST, ESPN360.com, or ABC in the lower South/Northeast: This isn't a rivalry. Not sure what this is.
Boston College at Maryland, 3:30 PM EST/12:30 PM PST, ESPNU: The Terps try to avoid 2-10. Is it possible the Bears beat the two worst teams in the six major conferences? That season opener sure provided us false hope.

When was the last time you think Bowden did anything. I think he and JoePa are locked in a battle for whose staff can do more work to get them the wins with them as figureheads.

I think it would be a total embarrassment for the BCS if Nebraska made it. They are not even ranked. Can they even make it according to the rules? I thought the conference champ had to be ranked in the top 16 to be eligible.

I agree that their chances are thankfully slim but according to the BCS rules:
2. The champions of the Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10, and Southeastern Conferences will have automatic berths in one of the participating bowls through the 2013 regular season.
So if for some god forsaken reason they squeak past Texas they’re in. Any further proof required that the BCS is a joke?

The Ultimate Opportunist

It depends on whether you think a BCS bowl might take a 11-2 Georgia Tech team over a 12-0 Boise State team as an at-large big. Or what about an 11-1 Cincinnati that lost to Pitt?
Texas will be a heavy, heavy favorite in the Big XII title game, but heavy favorites have faltered in that game before. Think Kansas State shocking a heavily favored Oklahoma in 2003.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
An upset of Georgia Tech would be the worst thing possible for Boise State. Clemson would get the autobid and Georgia Tech would be an obvious choice for an at-large. Boise State wants the favorites to win all of the conference championship games, including Pitt/Cincy and the Civil War.

Quick recap of the womens' BB game
Mrs. CALumbus Bear and I attended today’s game against Southern here in Columbus, Ohio, and represented approximately 100% of the Cal fans who weren’t related to team members. There were about 10 other Cal fans next to us, and Coach Boyle walked up and hugged them all, so I assume they are members of the basketball “family”. Where’s my hug, coach? I’m a person too!!!!!11
While it was mild weather in Columbus, the Lady Bears were cold in the first half, and I watched a high-school-esque outpouring of 24 points for the good gals and a whopping 16 points for our foes.
Coach Boyle apparently wasn’t in the hugging mood at halftime, because the team came out fired up and scored 10 straight points, and utilized a full-court press for pretty much the remainder of the second half. We had massive energy that half, and improved our shooting percentage from 29 to 62 percent. After the first 5 or so minutes of the second, Gray-Lawson was pulled and some of the noobs came in for mop up duties.
I was particularly impressed with Frederico (#3) and Clarendon (#23), who played tenacious D and almost scored at will. Brandon (#25) is tall and fast and seemed to dominate the boards.
It was a crappy first half followed by an energetic and fun second half, and our Bears easily took care of business 78-47. I’m pretty sure the team heard my yells of “Go Bears”, and there’s no evidence they didn’t say “let’s win it for that awesome fan who came out to support us”, but I still didn’t get a single damn hug!
Funniest part of the game was a ref calling us for an “over and back,” but for the wrong line! Instead of the half-court line, the ref called it on a line about 10 feet inside our territory (not sure what the line is for, maybe volleyball related). Everyone started yelling, and the other refs were laughing and they talked it out. I was sitting about 15 feet away, so I heard the ref when she came over to the scoring table and said “that was my fault, Cal ball.” One ref kept giggling for the next few minutes. Good times.
I’ll be going to tomorrow’s “championship” game against Ohio State. OSU looks good, so I’m not optimistic, but at least there will be 2 Cal fans being obnoxious in a sea of worthless nuts (aka Buckeyes).

Hey may not even go first among the QBs in the draft, so probably not. His team may have been one of the best, but there were other reasons too.
