Rivalry Weekend Morning Open Thread
What a terrible week for Tiger Woods: First he gets booed out of his own stadium, second he gets accused of cheating on his wife, third he gets beaten around by said wife and chased out of the house with her brandishing a golf club, fourth he runs into a fire hydrant and a tree.
And to think this whole chain of events was set in motion by Cal fans letting loose on the red. We are horrible horrible people. And we have the Axe. WOOOOO!!!!!!!
Here's your morning schedule after the jump.
College Gameday from Gainesville, 10 AM EST/7 AM PST, ESPN: One of the last chances you'll get to pay homage to the great Tim Tebow.
Clemson at South Carolina, noon EST/9 AM PST, ESPN: Twist is heavily invested in this game; you get the feeling that this is the real big game for him.
North Carolina at NC State, noon EST/9 AM PST, ESPN2: Your ACC game of worthless.
Ole Miss at Mississippi St, noon EST/9 AM PST, SECTV/CSN California: The Iron Bowl's retarded cousin, the Egg Bowl.
Syracuse at UConn, noon EST/9 AM PST, ESPN360.com: If only they were playing on a basketball court.
Wake Forest at Duke, noon EST/9 AM PST, ESPN360.com: Duke's last chance at bowl eligibility. Don't let it slip away Cutcliffe!
South Carolina St. at Appalachian St, FCS Playoffs, noon EST/9 AM PST, ESPNU: Hey, a playoff system to determine a champion! This sounds like an idea that makes sense.
Oklahoma St. at Oklahoma, 12:30 PM EST/9:30 AM PST, FSN HD/CSN Bay Area: Boise fans better be chanting Boomer Sooner, because an Okie State loss helps their Fiesta Bowl chances drastically. A loss could have them looking inside out.
New Mexico at TCU, 1 PM EST/10 AM PST, The MTN: TCU sows up their trip to the Sugar Bowl.
Grambling at Southern, 2 PM EST/11 AM PST, NBC: If all halftime shows were like the plot of Drumline, I wouldn't mind them lasting 20 minutes.

I was looking at Cal’s schedule for next year. Apparently, we have no byes until mid-november, when we have two. Anyone know if we are trying to move any of the October games back?
We’ll probably move one game to the week before Thanksgiving. I’d have to look at the other Pac-10 schedules and see which teams would align.

Possibilities
Washington (Sept. 25)—Nov. 20 is their Apple Cup, but they could be persuaded to postpone it a week, especially since their current 2010 schedule has no byes.
at Arizona (Oct. 2)—Arizona does have an open date Nov. 20th, but they play on a Friday Thanskgiving week at Oregon.
UCLA (Oct. 9)—The play ASU Nov. 20th. So I’m guessing this one stays where it is.
at USC (Oct. 16)—This is a total bummer…but USC does have an open date Nov. 20th too.
ASU (Oct. 23)—See UCLA
OSU (Oct. 30)—We’re getting pretty late now…eight straight weeks without a bye?
So I’m guessing it might be Washington again. If not, we have to move either one of our road games to Arizona and USC to the week before Thanksgiving. Yeah, I’m not really looking forward to this either.

Seems like Washington and Cal reschedule ever year. Maybe the schedule makers could insert bye weeks onto the conference schedule initially.

I do not see Tebow working well at the NFL level.
At all.
It’s going to work like this:
1. He is most likely to be drafted by a lousy team.
2. He has to throw out all he has learned at Florida and learn the lousy team’s entire offensive scheme.
2a. This means he has to learn to not be an Option quarterback.
3. Because the lousy team doesn’t have some or all of the offensive tools that the Florida Gators provide (capable wide receivers and dual threats, offensive line, offensive coordinators and/or head coach) he will find life in the NFL much more difficult.
4. If he does try to work the option, he would probably end up being drilled by linebackers that have much better pursuit speed than college linebackers, thus injuring him, thus making your multi-million dollar Tim Tebow worthless.
4a: Basically, imagine this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0ObP-BIGXE but every week.
"Today's weather, excessively violent with a chance of dismemberment. Tune in later for our 5-day forecast!"
~ Three Dog - Fallout 3
I don’t think it is certain that Tebow gets drafted by a lousy team. I also don’t think it is certain that he would be thrown into the fire immediately.
With the ascendency of the spread and wildcat into even the NFL ang seeing as 4 of the AP Top 10 are spread offenses, I think there is roomin the NFL for spread quarterbacks like Tebow.
The things you didn’t mention are charcter and leadership. I know the myth of Tebow is seen by a lot of people as over the top, but listen to his teammates. He really is a unique player in terms of those I tangibles.
None of this is to say I don’t have misgivings about Tebow. His delivery is too long. He throws off his backfoot too often. I worry that he only throws to guys once they are clearly open instead of throwing to windows. Still, I think he is worth a look but would be much better served by being drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
by BeastMode on Nov 28, 2009 8:03 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
Tebow seems like a better Eric Crouch, and Crouch was like most high-risk highly productive college player with no true position in the NFL, in that they get drafted in the 3rd or 4th round. My guess is Tebow is picked in the late 2nd round to mid 3rd.
Tebow is MUCH better than Crouch. While both guys ran for a lot of yards in the option, Tebow is a much more prolific passer.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.

Nah Tebow will be fine. I mean look at how good the last Urban Meyer coached Spread QB to be drafted by the NFL turned out!
President Emperor Warlord Of The Sun!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
The problem is a lot of top programs are moving to the spread. Either the NFL will adapt and implement more spread or the talent evaluation is going to get much tougher. Obviously not every spread quarterback will fail to succeed in the NFL.

President Emperor Warlord Of The Sun!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
No, not in a “I’m pissed at the coaching staff way.”
Seeing Vereen’s recent efforts makes me think that Best could have been used in a different way that would have been better. Similar to LenDale White/Reggie Bush and, no, I don’t think it matters that White and Vereen aren’t the same type of backs.
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."
--Coach Clark
Which way, in specific, would this have been?
President Emperor Warlord Of The Sun!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
I’ve said it before but here goes:
Vereen gets 20 (plus/minus 5) carries a game.
Best gets 20 (plus/minus 5) touches a game. Some of these would be the traditional RB carries, but some would be reverses, fly sweeps, screens, go routes, wheel routes, and kickoff returns.
Both would likely be around the 1000 yard receiving mark, with Best being close to 2000 all-purpose yards.
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."
--Coach Clark
I agree that Best is more electrifying, but CJ Spiller is a great talent. He will be drafted higher than Best next year, unfortunately.

Three things that I think have made McC so successful:
- Lots of Giants fans (i think there are far more giants fans out there than cal fans, though i have no numbers to back me up).

- His writing is really, really good, both insightful and funny. This is by far the biggest reason for McC’s success.

you’d be kidding yourself if you think all of those games are pushovers… despite the Big 12 being down, they’re still tough opponents with talent (and there is a grind just like the Pac-10). i will grant you that it’s not that impressive, but i’d say the same thing about Big East and MWC schedules (regardless of OoC schedules)
Not saying that i feel Texas is one of the top 2 teams in the country (i don’t). but TCU’s schedule is weaker… of the 1-loss and undefeated teams, who do you propose deserves a BCS title birth assuming everything goes the way of chalk (let’s assume Florida beats Bama)?

Ruh-roh, a very different story? Interrresting.
Tiger Woods’ wife, Elin Nordegren, changed the story she told the first officer on the scene, according to law enforcement sources.
The Windemere Police Department says Tiger’s wife went outside, saw that her husband had struck a fire hydrant and a tree, and then went back inside the house for a golf club to use to try and extricate him from the vehicle. But we’ve learned Nordegren told a very different story to the Florida Highway Patrol, and it does not involve going back in the house for a club. Our sources will not allow us to be more specific.

So, thinking out loud here…
If South Carolina and Oklahoma hold on, then Cincy beats Pitt next week, Texas beats Nebraska, Georgia Tech wins tonight and then beats Clemson, who the hell goes to the BCS?
Florida, Alabama, Texas, TCU, one of the Oregons, Ohio State, Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, and … Boise State and Iowa? Does a Pac-10 team have a chance?
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Yes, which would eliminate the Beavers if they lost, because you need 9 wins to be eligible for an at-large.
Still, what about Oregon if they lose a close one, or even USC if there’s enough chaos? The Trojans would certainly bring more fans anywhere they go than Boise State.
Politically, it would be hard to pick Oregon and leave Boise out, though.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Eh, the BCS chose a 12-1 Kansas over 12-2 Missouri two years ago, even though Missouri beat Kansas head-to-head.
There’d have to be some serious chaos to get another P10 team in. Seems improbable.

No way
The BCS is not going to take a three loss team. Not when you have multiple undefeateds and one-two loss teams from major conferences. Doing so would prove the BCS to be completely unconcerned with picking the teams who deserve to be there. The only way USC gets to the BCS is if somehow they win the conference, which would be totally freakish, if even possible.
