Vote for your CGB Top-25 for Week 12!
You know the drill: Go here and vote for the top 25 teams for week 12.
The directions are listed on the voting page and it should be simple enough. Please let me know if you encounter any troubles. The results will be posted either on Tuesday or Wednesday. Blah blah blah blah
Important: There are two bugs on the poll that I haven't fixed it yet but I hope to soon! So be careful. You can vote for the same team twice (ask rags how). Don't do it! Also if you drop a team out (by pressing X) and then in the drop down select another team and then want to vote the original team back in... you can't. So try not to do that m'kay?
The previous week's results are located:

Can Cal beat Clemson?
And why is USC behind Cal?
In other words, Go Bears!
by royrules22 on Nov 21, 2009 10:42 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Reasons
They were 22 last week and being off neither helped nor hurt them. Cal is ahead of them because they beat the number 13 team in the country on the road and that win earned them some good movement in my eyes. Yes, Cal can beat Clemson. Will we find out? I don’t know.

Fortunately, LSU dropped from the top 10 with their lose to Ole Miss, unfortunately it propelled Ole Miss ahead of Cal in the polls, which is an abomination. Ole Miss’ best win, is against a team whose best win is either @6-5 Georgia or vrs 7-4 Auburn.

I’m beginning to figure out how the system works – it really doesn’t seem to penalize teams much for losses they keep close, and all of AZ’s losses have been really close, so the system likes them a little better than Cal. Cal’s actually only ranked 29 in Sagarin’s ratings, but I made some room for them…
by Missing Barry on Nov 22, 2009 1:51 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, Oklahoma is actually ranked Top 10 in Sagarin’s ratings. It’s crazy. I moved them way down, and moved Texas Tech down, too (because I feel they got a big boost from how high Oklahoma is). It’s a point differential thing – losses by 1 to BYU and Miami, 3 to Texas, 7 to Nebraska….Sagarin doesn’t seem to penalize those much at all. TTech killed them, though…
Every game they’ve won has also had a pretty good point differential, so I think that can pretty much explain the whole thing.

Really? Getting absolutely abused by TTech?
I can’t imagine they even deserve anything, but okay.

ITT: Rishi attempts to carry on an argument with a mathematical formula for ranking teams. It’s not going to answer back, dude!

I guess I’m still having trouble wrapping my head around a 6-5 team being ranked in the top ten…

by Rishi on Nov 23, 2009 6:25 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Point differential is the simple answer. They lost to BYU by 1, who’s a Top 35 team in Sagarin’s ratings. They lost to Miami by 1, a Top 20 team. They lost to Top 3 Texas (forgot where exactly they’re ranked since I exclude them) by 3. They lost to Top 15 Nebraska by 7. I doubt those 4 games really count negatively against them at all – in terms of looking at it from a point differential standpoint, losing by 1-3 is basically saying you played the team evenly and just got an unlucky break. TTech murdered them, but look what Oklahoma did to TA&M, Tulsa, Kansas, Baylor, and you can see why the formula would give them more credit than you’d initially expect.

Soooo, Texas?
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Texas’ “douchebag coach” penalty has kept them out of my Top 25 every week so far this season…

I see you’re still voting for both Oklahoma and Arizona, however…
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Texas is the only team I give this penalty to. I also do not put Stanford in my poll

I usually don't post my ballot here, instead waiting for my own Top 25 post, but what the hell...
1. TCU
2. Texas
3. Alabama
4. Florida
5. Cincinnati
6. Georgia Tech
7. Boise State
8. Oregon
9. Pittsburgh
10. USC
11. Oregon State
12. Ohio State
13. Iowa
14. Virginia Tech
15. Oklahoma State
16. California
17. Arizona
18. Stanford
19. North Carolina
20. Miami (FL)
21. Mississippi
22. LSU
23. Penn State
24. BYU
25. Utah
Feel free to point out things you think are weird, but I think I can defend this poll pretty well; I spent a lot of time thinking about it.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

I’ve been wanting to put TCU at #1, but I just can’t convince myself to do it. But if Texas loses to Nebraska, I would definitely want to see TCU in the national championship game.

I’m a little confused by your USC ranking.

by BeastMode on Nov 22, 2009 1:32 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Teams 10-18 are all extremely close — there’s no ranking of the Top 6 Pac-10 teams that you can’t nitpick with a counterexample or two, so I simply had to order them on feel. Oregon should be on top, and then probably Oregon State (with only two conference losses), and then…I dunno. USC gets some credit for winning at Ohio State, and based on all available evidence, Ohio State and Iowa are extremely close. Arizona beat Stanford and Oregon State, lost at Iowa, had a close loss at Cal, a closer loss vs. conference top-dog Oregon, and hasn’t played USC yet. VaTech and Oklahoma State kinda feel like they should be above Cal/Stanford/Arizona, yet neither have spectacular résumés, really, and I think USC stands up well to both.
Also, I had Oregon State right above USC, and thought, based on head-to-head, I’d better switch them.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

This is almost the same as I was going to vote.
With one big difference. You’re missing Clemson.

I wouldn’t say that I’m missing Clemson…
Kidding aside, Clemson just missed the cut — they would have made my Top 26.

Why do you feel LSU should be ranked?
7
by Rishi on Nov 22, 2009 5:19 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
At this point, because they’ve piled up a bunch of wins and don’t have any really bad losses (the loss to Ole Miss isn’t great, but isn’t damning either against another 8-win team). The same argument applies to Penn State and Ole Miss. You could say the same thing about Utah, and to a lesser extent, Oklahoma State. Winning consistently, even when you’re expected to do, is difficult. LSU has, at the very least, comported itself well in loses to Florida and Alabama, so that should at least count for something, right?
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
