Nice one Cal way to give it to Harbutt
I told one of your guys Tedford (pride of Warren HS) would turn it around.

Congrats Cal fans......
Stanford definitely didnt play well enough to win on offense(Passing mostly) or defense(not a suprise)……Kudos to Cal for the defensive gameplan…..and offense for controlling to clock and the LOS……Good luck next week and in your bowl game. Enjoy the win…

You just made me reconsider my opinion of Furders
But not Harbaugh. Great coach, but a jerk.
Now go get Weis fired at Notre Dame (as if losing to UConn isn’t enought).
I'd like to smell the Roses before I die.
I think him being a "jerk" is what makes him good though......
Stanford tried the “nice guy route” coaching……..its not gonna work at football….He’s doing it his way……..sure he might ruffle some feathers…..but no coach at Stanford has had the kind of success he’s had here the entire decade pretty much……
Football is a results based business……not a nice guy contest………

There's winning and winning with class
I’m happy to win, but would rather do it with character. In the Holiday Bowl a few years back Tedford scolded his players for going for a TD when he called for running out the clock, then apologized to the Tx A&M coach and again at the beginning of his post-game interview, all while winning the game.
Harbaugh went for a 2-point conversion against USC with the game in hand. I’ll take Tedford ANY day. But Harbaugh’s a great coach, like I said above.
I hear there will be an opening at Notre Dame soon. Wherever Harbaugh is the next few years I bet Pete Carroll will get some well-deserved payback.
I'd like to smell the Roses before I die.
You're the only non-friend Furd fan I can actually respect
Kudos you’re a great guy
In other words, Go Bears!
Why is it I feel animosity towards Stanford?
Watching the game yesterday I tried to not dislike the Furd fans. Hey, their a bunch of college kids and alumni who care about their team like we do, and are having fun. Maybe it’s the attitude. At every game they’re wearing their Beat Cal shirts, even if they’re losing to Wake Forest. It’s almost like they are rooting against Cal more than they are rooting FOR their team. Their ticket phone number is something like 1-800-BEA-CAL. I think it’s their ’tude that sticks in my craw.
I’d like to think Cal fans are different. I root for Furd when they play out o’ conference (I’m a Pac-10 homer), sometimes when they play in conference, and I’ve got a huge amount of respect for the University and sports programs. Maybe less bravado would help, and that starts with the coach.
I'd like to smell the Roses before I die.
They think their number is 800-BEAT-CAL.
What the idiot Furdies don’t realize is that their number is actually 800-BE-AT-CAL. They’re subliminally telling the world that students should come to Cal instead of the Furd.

Those BEAT CAL shirts really get me too. I’m always one for positive cheers FOR your team not negative ones AGAINST their opponent.
I’m the opposite. I like spiting people!
by Missing Barry on Nov 22, 2009 1:01 PM PST up reply actions
I actually like those. The Furd has “Beat Cal” tees, USC has one with the commie logo on it, UCLA has some, Oregon has ’em. It just goes to show you that they respect us and fear us.
You wouldn’t find anyone with a Beat WSU tee.
In other words, Go Bears!
Appreciate your gentlemanly conduct. Definitely a classic game (probably for us more than for you). Hope your players heal up quick.
"Classic" Big Games
The thing is, they’re only classics when you win.
What really impressed me about this game was how our team kept playing.
When we were down 14-0 I thought we were done, but our players didn’t. What an awesome victory and I’m really happy for our seniors who get to have this one. Best win of the year, IMO. No other game even comes close.

Harbaugh has a lot of hype, but he’s gone to 1 bowl in 3 years now….you’d be surprised how quickly that hype turns to disappointment for no real reason (see: Tedford, Jeff, who went to 3 bowls his first 3 seasons*)
*It was actually 2, but only because of Holmoe….
by Missing Barry on Nov 21, 2009 8:00 PM PST up reply actions
Now I know you're not naive enough to think that Stanford can recruit the same kind of athlete that Cal can.....
Stanford is a private school, while Cal is a State school…..there’s admission difference……thus the standard of athletes are going to be different for a sport like football.

by norcaliangelsfan on Nov 21, 2009 8:02 PM PST up reply actions
Weak excuses. My private school just locked up a share of the CAA this year after our national championship last year. You don’t see us complaining. If it wasn’t for our stupid kicker we’d still have the 2nd longest win streak in D1 going right now…

Stanfurd has had better recruiting classes than Cal the last 2 years, so I think that pretty much kills your argument. Strong academics will lose some recruits but draw others.
What might be a legit argument is that Tedford inherited more talent than Harbaugh. Or that he was able to recruit JC players, but I don’t honestly know if that holds either.
GOLD OUT MOZAMBIQUE!
Look Im not trying to take anything away from your win today...
Cal most definitely earned it…….the coaches the players everyone…..but when people use the turnaround argument to compare Tedford and Harbaugh there is more to the story then just the caliber of the coaches………the players (quality of players) have alot to do with it too.

by norcaliangelsfan on Nov 21, 2009 8:24 PM PST up reply actions
I don’t necessarily disagree, but recruiting has not been holding Stanfurd back. That’s all I’m saying.
GOLD OUT MOZAMBIQUE!
Well sure the recruiting classes are good....
but then you got a RS Frosh QB….and Frosh DB’s playing against upper-classmen……..the experience will trump raw talent a majority of the time.
Now if its still the same ole story in 2011 then I will agree with you.
Pass the chocolate cake!
by norcaliangelsfan on Nov 21, 2009 8:22 PM PST up reply actions
The problem is by that time the hype is gone so the recruiting classes aren’t as good, so after your first big run at the Rose Bowl it’s tough to actually maintain that level for your program long term (again, see: Tedford, Jeff)
it’s amazing how much college football operates on trends…if you don’t capitalize in that first big rush where your team is the popular fad, things change very quickly….
by Missing Barry on Nov 21, 2009 8:25 PM PST up reply actions
Well Harbaugh will leave Stanford long before anything begins to fade........

Um, can’t a private school set whatever admissions standards it wants? On the other hand, doesn’t a state school have to set some sort of minimum admission requirement?
Stanford’s recruiting disadvantage, if any exists at all, is entirely self-created.
Thing C
Im pretty sure the NCAA sets min standards for all schools regardless.....
I dont know for sure…..but I imagine thats the case.
Pass the chocolate cake!
by norcaliangelsfan on Nov 21, 2009 8:44 PM PST up reply actions
That’s true, but I’m guessing (not positive, but supposing) that the admission standards of both schools are above the bare NCAA minimum.
Thing C
I would say thats a fairly safe assumption.
I think where the difference comes in though is in money for programs…….recruiting, coaches, etc……the better facilities you have for your school the better chances you get the better recruits……and I again (assuming here) think that Cal cares more about its football program and supports monetarily wise than Stanford does……(course that might be changing now)
Pass the chocolate cake!
by norcaliangelsfan on Nov 21, 2009 8:51 PM PST up reply actions
Well, the problem you aren’t recognizing is sports are secondary to academics. Where the problem comes in is at private schools, which are generally smaller than public schools, it’s harder to hide the poor academics because it makes a bigger difference on the overall average…
by Missing Barry on Nov 21, 2009 8:45 PM PST up reply actions
Are you saying that admitting a bunch of barely-NCAA-eligible athletes would hurt Stanford’s overall incoming class statistics? Like average GPA, SAT score, etc.?
Thing C
Yes. Well, I don’t know how big Stanford is, but my school was 3,000 kids, and we had something like 600 athletes overall. It’s a legitimate concern.
by Missing Barry on Nov 21, 2009 8:50 PM PST up reply actions
Understandable.
I agree that athletics should, for the most part, be secondary to academics. My point was merely that (I believe) there are specific rules/laws which prohibit Cal from accepting anyone they want, whereas no such rules exist for Stanford.
For example, they can have their lofty admissions standards, but still accept a single player who has the bare minimum, whereas that recruit would not be allowed into Cal.
Is this true?
Thing C
No idea, you’re getting too specific for my knowledge.

Thanks for being a gracious fan – your team seems just an ingredient or two shy of being really REALLY good. I kind of think/fear that ingredient is QB experience, which you’re obviously building in Luck.
How can you not love a team that does this?
Honestly….I think Toby should be the frontrunner for Heisman right now. It’s easy to discount the loss of great players, that’s what we did with Mack last year….

20 attempts is really low for Toby.....
credit to your offense…….for that……and the inexcusible throwing of the ball 30 times by Luck…..Not sure why that happened…….but I’d be willing to bet his numbers would be much better had he had 30 carries and luck had 20 passes…….
but it is what it is.

by norcaliangelsfan on Nov 21, 2009 8:17 PM PST up reply actions
You had to throw when you were behind, so that is a lot of the attempts. I don’t think that Harbaugh thought the defense could get enough stops.
by Tedfordisgod on Nov 21, 2009 8:18 PM PST up reply actions
I think when the Score was 31-21 with like 10 min left
and Harbaugh threw it three straight times was a bad call…….he coulda let Toby run the ball some there…….but I dont get paid to make those decision, and hindsight is always 20/20

yes, but i also think it was a horrible call when we didn’t go for it on 4th and 6 inches at the 50. we got the yardage we needed all night after the initial hiccups. 2 plays after the punt to the 20, furd was right back at the 50.

Curious, this is the first Stanford game I’ve watched, how has your d-line played this year? We obviously kicked your ass tonight, but our o-line has not played very well this year…so I’m just trying to figure out if it was more that your d-line is bad or our o-line played well?
by Missing Barry on Nov 21, 2009 8:27 PM PST up reply actions
the Defense as a whole hasnt been good.....
too slow…….if it wasnt for Toby and Luck scoring a ridiculous amounts of points they wouldnt have nearly as good as record as they do……and on the games where you see the teams scoring less than 20 ppg you can just go look at the TOP for the Cardinal on those games to see why the other teams Offense doesnt score as many points………But if you look at yardage given up……the team is just not good enough yet…….and like I said mainly that has to do with not being able to match up team speed on defense with the other teams offensive skill players.
Pass the chocolate cake!

Which bay would that even be referring to? Suisun bay?
IMO “East Bay” should refer only to the land east of SF which can be reached by traveling one bridge (Bay Bridge). How far east that extends is open to interpretation, but once you go over the Carquinez or Benicia bridges, that ceases to be “East Bay” in my opinion.

Well as a native of the East East Bay (which yes, can reach SF by only going over one bridge), the real distinction isn’t in bridges, as much as entering the Central Valley. Once you start going East of my area, basically the real distinction between the Bay Area and everyone else is whether they’re in the Central Valley or not, but there’s definitely some gray area in the definition of Central Valley vs. Bay Area….
by Missing Barry on Nov 21, 2009 8:59 PM PST up reply actions
Well, I consider everything along the 680 corridor to be East Bay, so are you saying places like Brentwood?
Thing C
Exactly, they’re the gray area. Basically I see places like Antioch-Brentwood as borderline. They’re pretty out there and pretty much Central Valley, but at the same time, BART goes all the way to Bay Point…

That was fun. When all is said and done, this year will be deemed a success in the grand scheme of things because we retained the axe and made it into a bowl game (AND Best’s injury wasn’t worse).
Of course, one of these years soon, we would need to make it to a BCS bowl, for no other reason than that our dear school can really use the extra money. Heck, I would even hope that Oregon St. can somehow be the 2nd BCS team from the Pac-10 for the extra revenue sharing to the leage.

I sort of want Alamar’s head. At least Gregory seems to show some improvement as the season went on. Alamar’s STs just seem to stay at failure levels…
To be rational about this – Gregory has been at Cal a while and had a pretty decent amount of success as the D coordinator. The FIRE GREGORY stuff is offbase because our D is usually pretty good. Alamar…on the other hand….well, let’s just say, our ST is not always up to par.

But I don’t want to fire Alamar. I want him as our TE coach and as a recruiter (‘cause he’s pretty good at that).

Yes, there is. I don’t know much about the specifics, but like I said in the fanpost about what to do about assistant coaching, there are definitely rules on this. I think it’s something like 11 asst. coaches.

Tedford is Tedford. He does some great things, some bad things, but overall, since 2007, i feel like he’s on top of things w.r.t a team quitting. I mean, we’ve had some bad losses but overall, we’re going to have a good if not great season both last year and this year.
eh, these guys have very deep problems if they can’t celebrate this win. yes, there were some incredibly conservative calls down the stretch (which I definitely disagree with), and i feel we should’ve won by more. but in the end, we won. and we have the axe.

Post game quote by Harbaugh
On the last play …
It was a big play. It was designed to go to Fleener .There are a lot of should’ves … he should’ve thrown it higher. We should’ve given him a better play at the time, a better play on the 4th and 9. A lot of should’ves offensively and defensively. It was a team loss, players coaches everyone
Cal did an outstanding job. They deserved the credit. They controlled the line of scrimmage most of the game especially in the 3rd and 4th quarter. It wasn’t just that one play. To win a game you have to win the phases: offense, defense. I thought we won special teams, but that’s only one.

Big developments from our team today
1) Anthony Miller is clutch. He’s such a great pass catching TE.
2) Lagemann has the best hands on the team. He might be our Hawk.
3) Jones might be our Robert Jordan
4) Michael Calvin probably hurt his chances the most today.
5) Mohammed finally plays today like he did last year.
6) Our linebackers improved… significantly
7) Kendrick Payne and Browner stepped up
8) Nbafuie stepped up admirably.

Cal’s had a relatively quiet history of having pretty fairly solid tight ends, most of which, save for Stevens, have been under the radar.

Three great wins today!
Bear-friendly Beaver fan here again… I missed the Cal/Stanford game because I was watching the Oregon/Arizona game, but I made sure to record it for later enjoyment ;-)
With OSU beating WSU, Oregon [barely] beating Arizona, and Cal beating Arizona last week and Stanford this week, the Civil War for the Rose Bowl should be awesome! We Beavers needed some Arizona losses so I’m glad Cal took care of them once… the way the Wildcats played tonight, I’m not sure they lose another game after Oregon! A grudging thanks to the Quacks as well.
Anyway, I don’t like Harbaugh. He’s a sore loser and a poor winner. I like Gerhart and the team, but I’ll be eating up every moment of watching Harbaugh’s frustrated antics on the recording! =:-D
Kudos to Tedford and the team for hanging in there after the tough Oregon and USC beatdowns and righting the Bear ship.

AWESOME WIN.
I had multiple heart attacks along the way and am emotionally drained.
Some thoughts:
1. Their d-line looked good in the first quarter, but then our o-line really stepped up. Is this the difference MSG (and Anthony Miller) make?
2. Our case of the dropsies wasn’t as bad as their case of the dropsies.
3. Riley was good tonight. He made a lot of big league throws and good reads.
4. I liked Alamar’s decision to squib repeatedly.
5. If I had a nit to pick, it’d be the decision on 3rd down for Riley to center the ball and down it, instead of Vereen trying to score.
6. Gerhart looked like a beast, but somehow the game got taken out of his hands.
7. Shane Vereen, welcome to the future. And it is glorious.
Responses
1. I was impressed with our O-line tonight, and haven’t been able to say that often enough. Stanford’s D just got tired after a while. They were on the field forever.
2. True. Luck didn’t play well, but his receivers didn’t help.
3. Yes. Aside from the interception, Riley was very solid throughout.
4. I approved, although Stanford was catching on to the trick. The Stanford player who charged in and got the last squib, returning it to the 40 or so, made a shrewd move.
5. That’s a pretty big nit. I hated that decision at the time, and still hate it. It’s playing not to lose, and it would have been really upsetting to lose – as we almost did, after not even trying to put the game away.
6. Yes.
7. Yes.

Dude, it’s hydrotech! Ok, so this has been bothering me all game, and I figure if anyone here knows the answer, it’s gotta be you.
There were a few times we ran a play either in an ace formation or I formation where we had one WR on the strong side and one on the weakside where the strongside WR was on the LOS, covering up the TE. I just don’t understand why this would ever be, if we just put the weakside WR on the LOS, the TE is now something they have to worry about. Is there a difference between running a route from the LOS vs. being off the LOS? There has to be some reason for this, right?
by Missing Barry on Nov 21, 2009 10:48 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah, I noticed that too. We did cover up the TE on strong-I formations (2 WRs, 1 TE, 2 backs). We usually run out of that formation or do max protect half roll sending just the two WRs down the field. Doing this does remove the TE as a receiving threat, but the overloaded formation (assuming the FB is in the strong position too) really threatens run to the strong side. So the defense is thinking run, and it leaves for very deadly playaction to the strong side.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
I guess i just don’t understand why we don’t change up the formation so nobody is covered up. Either put the TE off the LOS or the strongside WR off and the weakside on.
by Missing Barry on Nov 21, 2009 10:54 PM PST up reply actions
Oh, I mis-read your question. My answer above is in reference to I-formation, with the two WRs on teh same side of the TE.

Yeah, no, I’m not talking about a situation with two WR’s on the same side of the field, I would understand that. I noticed it on situations where we had WR’s on opposite sides of the field. I didn’t take note of the exact formations, but it would basically be like a strong-I but instead of the weakside WR on the LOS it was the strongside, thus covering up the TE. Or maybe it was a 3-WR ace formation where the TE and one of the strongside WR’s were on the LOS. Either way, it seems so easy to me that they could have put a WR on the LOS from the other side to not cover up the TE, I got confused. It’s making me think that the timing of the routes or something is better if the strongside WR is on the LOS…
by Missing Barry on Nov 21, 2009 11:10 PM PST up reply actions
Well, I’m always pretty observant to make sure we have alignments correct at most games. It’s a part of my pre-snap diagnostic. But it’s hard to see that from the endzone where I was sitting for Big Game. The only time we cover up the TE is in strong-I with twin WRs to the same side as the TE. We rarely cover up the TE any other time. Those few other rare times is when we have pre-snap motion, and the covered up TE comes off the LOS to become eligible (offense still has to have 7 men on the LOS).

Cal crowd was consistently loud the whole game. One thing that helped was that they actually let the mic men talk thru the speakers to the Cal section, so our cheers were a lot more coordinated. Not sure why furdies let that happen, but it was awesome.
Furd crowd was annoying. I got so freakin’ sick of that bell tolling every down on offense for us in the 4th. Good way to get your crowd loud tho.

How the season looks different now
Winning the Big Game, as a heavy underdog, is always going to be a major thing. But the win, and the way we won, really does change the way I view the season.
I have read stories this week about how Tedford is adapting and dealing with more than Xs and Os. We’ve heard all the nice talk about how the team has pulled together. But tonight proved a lot about the team’s character.
Cal’s team looks different now. I downplayed the Arizona win, because those games are always quirky and I wasn’t all that impressed with the Wildcats. But Stanford is a legitimately good team this season, with a breakout star in Gerhart. They didn’t put 50 points on Oregon and USC by accident.
I was prepared to be satisfied, if not happy, with an 8-4 season, or even 7-5, because Cal just didn’t seem to be all that good, and certainly not against good teams. But now the Bears have recovered from the Oregon-USC beatdowns by winning every game but one, against Oregon State (the second-best team in the conference, or the best) in the Best injury game. That’s an impressive recovery, regardless of what happens against Washington or in the bowl game. And it shows that all the cheerful propaganda wasn’t just happy talk.

AWESOME GAME
My $65 ticket + $45 UCLA ticket = more worth it than my season tickets… seriously.
But let’s discuss the Riley knee thing. Why didn’t they go for another running play at least? It seems to me a running play with Shane can result in several things:
1) 1st down
2) TD
3) He gets stopped in the backfield, loss of yards. We can still kick a FG no? Unless you’re telling me he loses 20 yards
4) Riley fumbles, or Vereen fumbles. We lose the ball.
But items #1 – #3 are fine. #3 isnt’ bad unless you lose 20 yards (0.00001% chance anyway)
SO WHY NOT? Why did Riley take a fvcking knee? Either way Furd has to burn a timeout if we run or we take a knee. Why not take a chance on the TD?
By taking a knee isn’t it saying you FEAR #4 so bad that you have to take a damn knee? C’mon. Harbaugh going for 4th meant he was afraid we would drive for another TD. And he has reason to be afraid. We took a knee for what?
I’m still enraged about that. Thank goodness it worked out, but Tedford would’ve gotten SHREDDED for that call if it cost us the game.
Also when we were burning timeouts I said “Please don’t do what the Pats did last week and burn timeouts and leave us with nothing.” Thank goodness we didn’t need a final drive+TD to seal the victory
Tedford placed a lot of importance on centering the ball, but yeah, i hated the call
i hated that call and teh 4th and 6 inches punt at the 50 when we were up 31-21
WHAT'S YOUR DEAL?
by Thoroughbred on Nov 21, 2009 11:03 PM PST up reply actions
I can defend the latter
because it’s conservative but not crazy.
But the former call almost cost us the game – a game our team deserved to win. That would have been very hard to accept.
no doubt. but obviously, tedford had faith in our defense.
WHAT'S YOUR DEAL?
by Thoroughbred on Nov 21, 2009 11:07 PM PST up reply actions
it's conservative yeah...
but the alternative doesn’t have a huge risk either.
The one thing that could go wrong is a fumble. Do you really think your team is gonna fumble that badly that you have to take a DAMN KNEE?
Just run it.
Who cares if we lose 2 yards, gain 2, whatever… You still gotta kick the FG. Furd is STILL going to burn a TD, but you gain the POSSIBILITY of a TD and to stuff the game away RIGHT THEN AND THERE.
This game hinged ENTIRELY on The Prophet’s interception…. which worked… but still. Looking back, the risk involved in the alternative was a moot point.
The 4th and 6 going for it would’ve been nice, but I think there is a lot of risk in failing there. This call had virtually 0 risk.
Both calls were bad – I felt on the 4th and 6 we could have challenged the spot had we not just burned a timeout. (Challenging spots is illegal, right?)
Centering rather than taking a shot at the TD was LAME. Right afterwards I sent a text that read, “Tedford’s continues to show limited balls.”
by Tedfordisgod on Nov 21, 2009 11:07 PM PST up reply actions
That should read, “Challenging spots is legal, right?”
by Tedfordisgod on Nov 21, 2009 11:08 PM PST up reply actions
I don’t agree with the call either, but it should be clear that Riley didn’t just take a knee: he centered the ball so that Giorgio (or was it D’Amato?) would be almost guaranteed to make it. I don’t know what the rules are for ball placement are, but if Vereen had run a play there’s a chance the ball would have been put at an extreme angle which our kickers have had a hard time converting.
"Let me tell you a story. I was a political prisoner for two years. The instant I was released I ran to McDonald's. I had a Big Mac and a Coke.
It was fantastic."
-Toyama Koichi, US Presidential candidate from Japan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGZqOkeYbB0
You know what? I though the calls on first and second down were worse than the third down call. Third and long there, picking up the TD or even a first down is a longshot, and you HAVE TO come away with points. Yes it’s the safe call, but it’s also the call with the best percentages.
HOWEVER, I would have liked to see a more aggressive 1st/2nd down. I think you can even try to throw it there. Why? Timeouts are more valuable on defense than they are on offense. The timeout doesn’t do Stanfurd a whole lot of good on offense — it helps a little, but not much. I think you gotta take at least one shot at the end zone there — a TD ends the game — and if you don’t get it, it doesn’t cost you clock — the were going to stop it anyway — it just leaves them with a less-useful timeout on their ensuing possession.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

The Vereen play was exceptionally smart.
by Tedfordisgod on Nov 21, 2009 11:14 PM PST up reply actions
Do you think with Vereen it allows the Bears to be able to control the ball more?
The scoring drives were of six plays, 10 plays, 10 plays, 11 plays, and 14 plays.
It had more to do with the O-line blowing up the Furd D-line
There were some holes that Best would’ve taken to the house. But that wouldn’t have let us control the clock
In other words, Go Bears!
I think it had MORE to do with the push the OL was getting, as I feel Best has gotten better about the following forward thing. I also think Best could’ve taken some of the creases to the house.

Shane also seems to be more efficient running in between the tackles, kind of like a Frank Gore where he waits patiently and takes as few steps as possible while he’s picking up yardage.
