The Big Game
It should be on a network other than Versus.

If Cal had beaten one good team this season
It’d be the ABC primetime telecast. Sigh.

too bad it was decided after the oregon state game…
if it had been decided after the zona win, probably
if we still had best, definitely.

Nah, Oregon-Arizona is still the big game regardless of what happened last week.

I believe beating Arizona counts as a good win this season.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
Too little too late. I believe we were stuck in the Versus slot before we played Zona.

I actually don’t mind being on Versus. It is a national broadcast whereas ABC is split 50-50.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
Versus
DirecTV people don’t get that game, though.

We can still do this. We just need adjustments, luck, and more luck.
LET’S GO BEARS! (i’m over being negative… it just sucks… what’s wrong with all you old blues?)

You seriously bummed me out with your negative juju.

no more negativity. they showed a little bit at the half. cuse can get lazy because they think this game is in hand, but they haven’t seen us light it up from outside. stay strong, my friend

Syracuse
I think they’re a bad match-up for us.
- This is a road game.
- Playing without Theo Robertson, arguably our best all-around player, is obviously tough.
- With Robertson out along with Harper Kamp, we’re playing without two of our top six players.
- Syracuse is really athletic when we’re, well, not that athletic. They’re so fast and we’re more methodical.
- Syracuse has length pretty much everywhere, while we’re on the small side with the exception of Max Zhang.

Hey guys look at me I'm RockyNumbers
Cal played really well that half. Not! (It’s funny because they didn’t play well in the first half!)

btw poor theo...he had hip surgery before right?
and now his foot, that really sucks.
All things considered…Not a bad first half.
-We tough ref adjustment – it seems to me Pac-10 refs call a lot more fouls for shooters. The block fouls have just seemed to be out of whack in favor of Syracuse. That could change in the second half.
- Robertson out with injury. I question whether he would make a huge difference – but you gotta prefer him to Bak/Knezevic/Smith
- We are in foul trouble – but they are a pretty bad foul shooting team. Assuming we don’t run out of bodies, this probably isn’t that bad.
- Virtual road game.
- I have a good amount of faith that Monty will make good adjustments in the second half. We will see..
We have been a much better team in the second half through the first two games (just flukey 3 pointers to close the score with murray st)

And with our shooting – we can close leads on occasion. I don’t have much hope, but a little hope.

I'm here at the Garden
Sitting in the upper deck but center court. Pretty partisan syracuse crowd (surprise) but do have a smattering of cal fans around.
Refs have been terrible, but I think the strategy is pretty clear moving forward: feed the ball to Zhang all day, every play. It’s max zhang time.

That is why you are in the upper deck, and not the coach.

Seriously
Zhang is the worst player on the court, though, for real.

The only way Cal is going to get Syracuse in foul trouble is by
attacking that zone and getting players to the rim.
Cuse is a terrible matchup for Cal with all those injuries.

Have you noticed that the refs outside the Pac 10 allow much more contact? I wonder if that puts our teams at a disadvantage? I remember Villanova just brutalizing people last year.

The fans just clapped the syracuse team off the court
This sucks.

Salvage a split and it’s still a good trip, esp. with no Theo.

This is what I love about basketball – this loss sucks – but it in no way ruins the season. We can get so much better from here.
(By the way – Bob Knight is getting a little mad at these refs on our behalf. I like it.)

by CaliforniaBone on Nov 19, 2009 5:52 PM PST up reply actions
He got pissed at a charge call, and earlier in the game he got pissed when they were reviewing whether Randle had been foulded on a two or three and it was obviously a three.

Cal woulda got beat calls or not, but the refs have been really really bad.

Well, those early fouls really hurt. We had to go to our freshmen… :/

Yes, though the odds we “salvage” things against Kansas are low.
But we fortunately get to come back tomorrow against another ranked team. I can’t wait.

There goes the hope of getting this to 10 and making the final score look respectable. It kinda looks like Cal is playing 5 on 6.

They kind of are. Cal looks really small on that court, like a mid-major.

Is anyone else a little impressed with Sanders-Frison as a passer. Seems like would could run the offense through him like we used to do through Kamp.
yeah, just need to keep out of foul trouble. the fouls he got tonight were ticky-tack tho

Yeah, the foul thing is always tough for guys his size on the college-level. If these were Big East refs, I was surprised by the foul calls tonight.
by Tedfordisgod on Nov 19, 2009 6:13 PM PST up reply actions
We lost by even worst to Missouri last year, truth be told. Granted, that game was on ESPNU, but they pulled together. Missouri had the size-speed advantage too

Let’s talk about how much Oklahoma State sucks and how much of a travesty it would be if such a shitty team made a BCS bowl. Why has no one written up long articles about how horrible the Big 12 has been this year? What is there record against C-USA and Houston in particular?!

In the end, the result of this game doesn’t really matter (well not too much, it still sucks). Lavin and co. might be surprised at the result of this game but I don’t think any of us are. Biggest surprise is Theo being out at the last second, and along w/ Kamp’s injury, we didn’t have a chance from the start. If we get those two back it’s a completely different team.
Cal didn’t schedule these games primarily to build an impressive resume, although that woulda been a huge plus had we won today. But we got a real good look at the Syracuse zone and this experience will help tremendously when it counts most in the tournament (assuming we don’t pull an epic fail this season). Throw that in with the matchup tomorrow against either a very very experienced team or a very very athletic team and we’re getting a huge dose of what to expect from what will be our toughest competition from here on out.
Not a great outing by the bears, but I think it was fine. PC really needs to find a way to get his own shots though.
I think we’ll be fine. I hope…
And that wesley johnson guy, is he a prick because he sure looks like one.
