Cal Men's Basketball vs Syracuse, Pregame/First Half Open Thread
Quick links to get you ready for this. Tipoff is approximately 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PM PST, coverage on ESPN2.
BREAKING NEWS: Theo is out with a foot injury. Jorge would likely take his place in the starting lineup, and we could see more Amoke and Seeley too. Harper Kamp is still out and did not make the trip to New York.
- Faraudo's been beastly. Got quotes from Jim Boheim, says Jerome Randle is the key to breaking the Syracuse defense, Cal players adjusting to Madison Square Garden, a 20 question interview with Nikola that doesn't talk about being Michael Cera's body-double, a history of MSG...well done Jeff.
- Jeff Goodman of the Daily Cal talks about the team's arrival in NYC, as well as a podcast about how to break down the famous 2-3 zone.
- Jim Boeheim is happy with his team's defensive effort in his team's most recent victories.
- Wilner ranks Cal 14th, 2 spots behind UW. Hat tip to Berkelium for gathering most of these links!
- Shameless self-promotion: CBKWitness recaps the first two games, ieeebear puts the video highlights of Murray State up, and we talk about the game on the podcast for the last few minutes. Additionally, here's our four-way roundtable with the UNC, Syracuse and Ohio State SBN blogs!
This is your thread for the first half. Second half thread will be up around halftime.

Theo Robertson is my favorite player and has been since his big shots his frosh year. FML
WHAT'S YOUR DEAL?
You guys know me: I feel I’m one of the most optimistic/rose-colored glasses Cal fans…
And I’m already breaking things around my house and cussing at my pets.

Is this the place for me to hang out?

Dude, Theo Robertson may not play. Shit has already gotten serious.
You probably couldn’t do any more harm than that. Feel free
I just don’t care about anything any more :( :( :(

Theo Definitely Out

I just don’t know what to feel anymore.

If he can hit 49% of his threes, I may learn to love again

Jorge is best when he's off the bench
He provides a huge boost of energy. He’ll also have to be more cautious defensively because he’ll need to play starters minutes.
When a player like Theo goes down, it’s not just missing him that hurts, it’s all the other guys who have to change their roles.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
I think Theo has secretly been our most ‘clutch’ player during his tenure at Cal. At crazy consistent.
I really feel like he’s the best player on our team (in terms of college basketball)

I disagree
Randle has been really clutch and is probably less replaceable than Theo. PC presents a lot of problems for other teams because of his athleticism and good shooting.
But yeah, no Theo is a big blow.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
all I know is that I want Theo to be taking the last second three of any game. just a gut feeling.
you’re right that Randle is less replaceable (and I really hope he does not try to force things because Theo is gone)
in order of replaceability at this point:
Randle>Robertson>PChris

can someone give me background info (in one sentence) on how impt this game is? Didn’t ’cuse lose earlier in the year to a really shitty team?
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."

that was an exhibition game, and they were running a completely different D just to test shit out.
it’s one of our biggest games of the year for national profile.
WHAT'S YOUR DEAL?

Very important, I believe
It will (if we win) establish ourselves as legitimate and may end up being quite a boon to our RPI, if that becomes important this year. Plus, it’s as close to a genuine road game as you can get on a “neutral” floor, so it can help make us battle tested.
Praise be to Tedford!
in essence, if we lose, it will be the same thing ’BUT MARYLAND PUNKED CAL AT HOME. CAL SUXS. LOL FUCK YOU PAC-10"

and this is where I exit the thread.
I’m all sorts of bad juju for the men’s basketball team.
Let’s just say I started watching the Jason Kidd NCAA tourney when they were playing UW-Green Bay.

Not important – bigger deal to be in games like this than to win them. A win is important for seeding, but this isn’t football where “every game matters.”

I think if this game runs over
You might see the start on ESPN360.

Where to watch start of game
Since ESPN has this other game ending – will last a LONG time. What’s the alternative?
Ah!
Looks like Cal is on the Kentucky menu item and Kentucky is on the Cal menu item. Says it’s “About to Begin”.
Nothing matters, comptontom… didn’t you hear? Theo Robertson will not play. We’re DOOMEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Come on dude
If this was last year we’d be fucked, but this season we probably have enough to be okay tonight.
Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com
No way. Syracuse is a good, athletic team. Don’t read anything into that LeMoyne manure. You know it’s bad when I’ve turned bearish. It’s a market indicator!
WHAT'S YOUR DEAL?
by Thoroughbred on Nov 19, 2009 4:07 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah, no kidding!
I saw JF’s post an hour ago.
But I’m still going to watch.
We probably won’t have enough size against ANY of the big teams this year, so while Theo’s shooting would have helped a lot, we are going to be exposed for having short and lack of depth on the inside. Everyone knew this. Kamp being out also kills us.
Maybe he will end up redshirting.. Ha!
I think ESPN is holding the tip in NY until this Indiana Ole Miss game is over
seems like it.
though i’m not so sure about getting ‘exposed’ any more than we were last year… we’ll see about that. i dunno though. it will be a huge surprise if we win this game now, and it will really tell me something about the talent on the team.
WHAT'S YOUR DEAL?
by Thoroughbred on Nov 19, 2009 4:10 PM PST up reply actions
Good point.
I get so bummed about the lack of a true big inside to round out our otherwise solid team and then remind myself (and surprise…
THEY TIPPED!!! ON ESPN360!
ESPN360 still has "About to Begin" with music
so the network is definitely holding the tip until this game finishes. Everyone out there can relax and wait for the finish on tv.
Tip
They just started.

Bears are committing way too many fouls. Those quick two on Boykin are killing us. We need him in the game.
Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com
I was just thinking about that. 3 mins and he racked up 2. What a awful handicap for us.

Cuse is getting home calls right now from the refs. Cal is getting bumped on every possession and fouls are not getting called.

We look awful and it isn’t just ebcause Theo is gone. These sort of things is why non-UCLA Pac-10 teams get no respect.

Oh come on…Pac-10 get plenty of basketball respect – the draft has been absolutely dominated by Pac-10 players for the past two years.

I am talking about national media. The FSN TV deal really hurts. That’s a fact.

Yeah, but that doesnt really matter in basketball. Pac-10 teams consistently perform well in the tourney. So who cares?

I didn’t mean to imply that you were saying he was bad. Especially early, he was the only guy out there who was doing much of anything – and he is our only player who can compete physically with anyone on Syracuse.
by Tedfordisgod on Nov 19, 2009 5:09 PM PST up reply actions
That's right
I think Randle could too but he has to start getting to the free throw line with his dribble or at least put Zhang there and do what he did with Boykin. That could get us back into the game.
keys to second half:
1) get inside the zone. high post / short corner
2) get back in transition
3) extend our defense a little and contest shooters
1) Somehow get Jerome open looks behind the 3
2) Profit.
