Yea it's Arizona
But fuckin’ hell our defense and our kicker came through BIG. And Riley got to point and laugh at another QB for being an idiot.
In other words, Go Bears!
Tavecchio's kickoff to the endzone
Thought process:
1. HOLYSHIT, FORZA ITALIA, FINALLY!
2. Wait a minute…
3. SHITSHITSHITSHIT, ONLY TAVECCHIO STANDS IN THE RETURN MAN’S WAY
4. OMFG, TAVECCHIO DID EVERYTHING AND STOPPED AN ARIZONA TD!!!

Best win of the year. Best D of the year. For the seniors! Seeing the players celebrate on the field after the win made me just about want to shed a tear. Last home game for those guys, and to play so well. The D played so damn well, despite some mistakes. Vereen! Supreme effort. Is it just me, or did Vereen get yards that Best would have not? I mean, Best is the best at some things, but Vereen dragged people around more.
Great effort Bears! I can be proud of that effort, and our team again.

Also agree. Without confirming with actual statistical evidence, it sure seems like Vereen is less likely to gain zero (or fewer) yards than Best on any particular carry, just as he’s less likely to gain more than 20.

I actually don't know what I mean
It was “Sun Hong Kong” in English and “New Hong Kong” in Chinese. “New” in Cantonese is pronouced “sun”
I was sitting on one of the benches in front of Dwinelle my freshman year and Tien came up and sat next to me and talked to me for about 20 minutes about how I was doing at Cal, adjusting to living away from home, etc.

What a game!
I’m in disbelief. Disbelief that we held Arizona’s vaunted offense to 16 points. Disbelief that we could overcome Riley’s 2 bad INTs. Disbelief that Salami made 4 FGs. Disbelief that we managed to hold the ball for 8 minutes on a 4th Q drive with the game on the line. Disbelief that we managed to win a game that, in my heart of hearts, I thought we’d blown by not putting Arizona away in the 3rd Q when we had the chance. Disbelief that a crucial mental error was committed not by us, but by Nick Foles in the last 3 minutes of the game. Disbelief that when the chips were down on the last drive (after the inexplicable PAT debacle that kept Arizona in the game), we finally mounted a pass rush.
A highly unexpected win that I will enjoy tonight with some more beverages. I think we got a little revenge for 2006 tonight. Just a little. But sweet nonetheless.

I don’t think a lot of people expected to win. That, coupled with how the win unfolded (everyone going ballistic after Vereen reeled off the 61 yard run for a TD, crazy penalty committed by Foles), and the fact that it was the last home game of the season, sort of created a euphoric “rush the field!” atmosphere.
I appreciate that we beat a ranked team on the road in exciting fashion. It just didn’t scream RUSH THE FIELD MOMENT, GUYS! to me.
President Emperor Warlord Of The Sun!

I could swear we played this game at home. Or was I sitting in Memorial Stadium all by myself hallucinating?
I think it wasn’t so much of a rushing the field as it was a “hey, let’s have a big postgame party on the field!” i wasn’t going to go down, but once people started going down, I decided what the hell, it’s my last home game as a student, we won in exciting fashion, and I want to say hi to people.

(D) Farging awesome heart-attack inducing Cal win
Why NOT rush the field? It was a big game, a big win.
That said, the rushing of the field was very late and actually started not really from the students but from the north-east corner. It was more of a hack, why not? rushing of the field.
I love the enthusiasm though – the north tunnel exits as the players filtered off the field to the cheers of fans was awesome. I “rushed” the field just as a method of getting out faster via the north tunnel, but I’m glad I did – it was a lot of fun.
I kinda wanted to rush the field, but my friends didn’t want to. If I were a senior, I definitely would’ve, though. I’ll be sure to do it next time I have the chance.
I also thought it was funny how it wasn’t the students who first rushed the field. There were some students saying “Rush the field!” but I didn’t expect many people to do it.
Ya, do it. It’s fun and heck so long as you’re not destroying the goal posts then there is no harm. You get to see the players up close, mill around aimlessly and generally exult in the big win. It’s all good.
A couple students rushed the field and got turned away by a yellow jacket. Then like a minute later there was a jailbreak from the corner and it was all over. Pretty funny.
I rushed the field for the first time since I was a student! Of course I was dragged by my 16-year-old nephew and his friend, but still: I rushed the field!

I can't be too optimistic
The Big Game is almost always won by the better team, i.e. the team that’s playing better at the time and has a better overall record.
This year, that’s Stanford.
So I’m going in with low expectations, for the first time in a long time. We’re the heavy underdogs. Stanford will be a nationally-ranked team playing for a possible Rose Bowl bid. Cal gets obliterated by good teams.
If it happens, it will be a really cool upset.

When I was at Cal, there were 2 years when they really should have squashed us, includng 2001, but only beat us by 7 points. Did they beat us? Yes. But you gotta throw out the records. Like in 2006 when we sholda crushed them and we won 16-7 or whatever it was. Or in 2007 when OH GOD STOP THINKING ABOUT IT!
Or even last year when they had something like 200 yards in the first half, but managed only 3 points out of it. Weird things happeni n Big Games. I don’t know if that means we’ll win. Certainly Stanford seems to be peaking just at the right time. However, you never know!

I wish I shared your optimism. After today’s battle, I am feeling better. We have to stop Gerhart. We have had some good success stopping RBs, but have yet to face a power back like him, really. If we can slow or stop him, then it puts the onus on Luck to stop us. I think Luck is more Foles than Canfield. So, I’m only pretty scared as compared to REALLY scared. ;)!

We shut Jacquizz Rodgers down (except for that last garbage TD) despite Jahvid’s life being in question.
The important part is dealing with their OL, as Gerhart can be tackled (and has a sneaky case of the fumbles). Their OL is the true gem on that team…

I remember there was still a fair amount of space right before the beginning of the game, but it looked pretty full once the game got underway. People arrived late, I guess. I’ve been noticing that over the last few games. People just aren’t as excited after the loss the USC, probably. I also overheard some people around campus saying that they wouldn’t go or they didn’t want to buy season tickets again next year. Too bad for them, because they missed out on this awesome game!

Excellent game and yeah for tonight's mic men!
My husband and I agreed that tonight’s was the best home game we’ve been to in a LONG time – great way to close out the home season.
I’d also like to recognize the mic men, who did a MUCH better job tonight keeping the crowd in the game. I don’t think the “Hey Alumni.. .GO!” cheer is the right one just after a turnover, but the sentiment was spot on.
I vowed to contribute what I could to this game, and left my voicebox at the stadium as a result – well worth it.

From Calbears.com
Travis Cobb took the ensuing kickoff and looked like he was going to take it back a long way before Tavecchio somehow managed to trip him up at the 38. Coach Jeff Tedford said Tavecchio might be the team’s worst tackler, making the play even more improbable.
“I just remember him cutting inside and I don’t why, I kind of stuck my foot out,” said Tavecchio, who needed stitches in his right leg after the tackle. “It must have been a reflex from my soccer days. I felt contact and looked behind me and the guy was on the ground. I got up and was like, ‘Was that me?’ It’s a dream. I’ve never tackled anyone before. It was a quirky play that resulted in something decent.”

I only caught the last few minutes but that was pretty damn exciting – seeing the entire team go berserk to pull out the win. A sack when rushing three? Come on.
What? I could have sworn I saw Cal rush three when Arizona was at 4th and forever, and they got the sack anyway. Was I seeing things?
Goddamn it. Why won’t you let me be happy about USC’s fall from grace in peace. your continued delightful personality and good manners make it so difficult to hate on USC fans.

I agree with Pie.
The Furd victory cost the Pac-10 maybe $6M in BCS money from USC’s participation. The Furd victory also may cost us some recruits. It was a bad USC loss for us. Our own win tonight even helped Furd further.
What are the chances Furd looks past us to ND next weekend?

Furd’s class is almost full last I checked, so we’ll see about the recruits. I can’t think of any mutual recruits besides RB Ricky Seale at this point.
The recruiting season isn’t over til February 4th and what reflects most (in terms of stats) is final record and bowl game. I feel Harbaugh is in the running for the ND job as he has beaten USC twice, and that’s huge for that fanbase.
I’ll repeat. We are 7-3 with games against Furd and UW remaining. Last year, we were 6-4 with those same two teams remaining. Let’s see what happens. I feel we match up well against most of Furd’s offense (except for that detestable TE Fleener)

Dear Arizona,
The Juju was watching when you were asked this question:
1) Do you think Arizona will make the Rose Bowl this year??
To which you gave this answer:
Short Answer. Yes. I think we will make the Rose Bowl.
The Juju did not appreciate the disrespect accorded to the Juju’s powers. Were you not the beneficiary of the Juju in 2006 when you were given the power of karma (and a horrible pass interference call against Daymeion Hughes) to trample upon Cal’s Rose Bowl talk? Yet, just three years later, and with four Pac-10 games remaining, you chose to awaken the Juju with declarations of Rose Bowl. Let tonight be your reminder about the power of the Juju.
For now, I have your Rose Bowl in my pants.
Very truly yours,
The Juju

I think TMoran thinks the opposite of what we meant there. We meant that Furdll suck bc they still have to play Ore and USC. TMoran is saying that Arizona can still make the Rose Bowl because they have to play Ore and USC. ALthough, stunningly enough, USC is not as important now.
If Arizona wins out, they will have wins over OSU (in Corvallis), Oregon, and USC. They would have 2 losses. They could still possibly make the Rose Bowl depending on a few factors.

Nor did Arizona technically destroy ours in 2006

Tennessee was more important and more cathartic, but it wasn’t really dramatic – it was kind of a blowout. Washington was crazy dramatic, and the pandemonium from the Marshawn TD and then Bishop INT was crazy fun. The single moment when Marshawn is ghost-riding the injury cart while Oski is being rolled up 3 feet to my left pushed that game over the top on the fun-0-meter for me.

we were FREAKING LOUD for once simply because we got on a roll with the first play as an INT.

Funny, that was the season of my senior year… but I have no recollection of that game. All I remember of that season, in fact, was some UCLA fan trying to pick a fight with me after UCLA had beaten USC at the Coliseum. I was so surprised that I asked if he knew that his team had won.
You don’t remember the 1991 USC-Cal game? Shame on you. It was one of the greatest games ever. Cal was up 52-14 in the 4th quarter until we (unlike the ‘furd) showed some class and put in our second-string, allowing $c to score a couple of garbage TDs. That was the game where the Cal student section introduced "This is the only song you know, it’s boring and it’s slow, we really wish you go," etc. And the Cal band kept a running total of the number of times the $c band played its two songs on two giant flip charts. It was over 100 for one of them and in the 90s for the other. It was a gigantic Cal party of joy. Now, an $c fan might feign forgetfulness about that game, but I can’t believe any good Cal fan would ever forget . . . Oh . . .
So, anyway, how ya been lately, D.C.?
Changing the subject entirely, if you recall the Harold Lloyd movie I commended to you for scenes of the 1920s USC campus and Cal’s Memorial Stadium, I recently read that the players on both teams were played by members of the 1923 USC team, which should add some interest for you.
As for feigning forgetfulness, it’s no act. I can remember three games specifically from when I was in college, only one for the actual play, that was the 1988 game against Oklahoma. I vaguely remember a game against Utah State which might have been in 1989, because a friend of mine nearly made a HS school baton twirler cry, and the aforementioned 1991 UCLA game because the UCLA students were so shitfaced they spent most of the second half fighting amongst themselves.
That’s it for the student years, and then the only 2 other games in the 90s that I have any recollection of are the 92 Liberty Bowl (because it’s hard to forget trauma) and the 96 Notre Dame game.

STAY THIRSTY, MY FRIENDS
Congrats...
Way to go Bears! Way to hang in there and make us all proud. This should make next weeks game really interesting. Was pleased to see coach Tedford show some emotion tonight, especially on the botched extra point! He is alive!
Go Bears!
P.S. This was a wierd game. So many of the calls that went against Arizona would during a normal game have gone against Cal. Strange luck…

Postgame thoughts:
Spectacular effort by the defense. I felt like Arizona stopped themselves in the first half with dropped passes and bad throws. Maybe that gave the defense confidence, maybe Arizona lost confidence, but in any case our defense DOMINATED the 2nd half. Arizona only score once and that was mostly due to 2 questionable PI calls on one drive. Other than that we DESTROYED THEM
Other thoughts:
1- Crowd was great, especially in the 4th quarter. It was wonderful seeing everybody get into it – players, coaches, fans. wonderful
2 – I have a bad habit of jumping really high when Cal makes a huge play. This happened I think 4 or 5 times in the 4th quarter and on the last 4th down stop/sack I almost broke my ankle on the way down. It’s a little tender today, but I’ll walk it off.
3 – I totally saw Patrick Christopher, Jamal Boykins, and Avinash on Telegraph Ave. about 1:45 before gametime. Not together though (I think?).
4 – GIVE EM THE AXE!!!

I wish someone would’ve told me I was hanging with Boykin and Christopher. I would’ve so interviewed them!

My Gameday Experience and a couple of comments
One Word: “Different”
1. This was a game that Cal, in the past, would have found a way to lose (same goes for the ASU game), but didn’t.
2. Sat with my Wildcat friend in the UofA section. All game long she was totally enjoying Willie the Wildcat and kept pointing him out to me. Other than this odd distraction, she, as a good Cal season ticket should do, was totally cheering for the Bears.
3. As a longtime west side season ticket holder I was shocked sitting on the east side. OMG, there is so much more going on in the east side! The difference between the student side and the alumni side is like night and day. The “being into the game” by the student side was amazing and totally invigorating to watch. Also the amenities available to the eastern side was “DIFFERENT”. I watched the first Cal TD while carrying pulled pork sandwiches to my seat. Can’t do that in my regular Section E seats. The wide variety of hot foods and drinks sure took the chill off the night air. Maybe it’s the bad food and poor restroom access that makes the west siders so not into it.
4. It got too cold to hold my camcorder. Sorry, no videos.
5. Haven’t visited the BI website for over a week (as someone else described to me – “Too many Debbie Downers” hang out there). If anyone asks if I am Justin.tv’ing the Big Game tell them “No, he does not get Versus and is going to the game.”
6. BEAT STANFURD!
Come to the dark side, prd74. The East Side is infinity beleven times better than the West Side. ’Natch!

Did it go something like this?
UCPD: What’s your deal?
AZ Fan: What’s YOUR deal?
UCPD: You’re prior to the snap.
AZ Fan: NO, YOU’RE PRIOR TO THE SNAP!
UCPD: You’re under arrest.
Praise be to Tedford!
