Arizona State-Oregon Open Thread
To discuss the Cal-Arizona game, scroll up to the postgame thread! If the Cal-Arizona game is still going on, scroll down to the 4th quarter thread!
Since this is officially AtQ South thanks to Twist's mangled invasion FAIL, I'm guessing the most desirable of outcomes other than USC holding status quo is to have the Ducks win the Pac-10. So quack away Cal fans!

What a way to go into a BIG GAME.
Hot damn.
Cal with big momentum beating a ranked team this week. ‘furd whopping up on ’SC. Vareen proves we really don’t have much drop off (if any) with him in. Bowl implications abound…
First time in a while that The Big Game will actually be a pretty big game.
Wow! Is this the first time the defense has played with that kind of
Intensity in a full game this year?
Shane Vereen
saved Riley’s ass! I do think there’s a dropoff with Vereen in the fact that there were a few plays that Best probably would have gotten a few more yards, Vereen isn’t as decisive as Best is, but you can also see that he’s much stronger then him which allowed him to take all the carries as running back. The capper the 61 yarder to put the game away!
If Rocky is the CEO
everyone would be fired by now and the stock price would plummet like Sept 2008.
nah.. Jahvid gets stuffed on those plays too.
Vareen’s night tonight was like many of JB’s performances. A few nice long gains, stuffed several times, then bust one huge one.
Go Bears!!!
Some much needed momentum to go into the Big Game with, no matter how lucky we got that ’Zona made a boneheaded play late with that illegal forward pass.

Dude, this victory is one of the sweeter ones in a long time. All the Tedford haters, shut it. Makes Big Game so much more awesome.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
All Gregory haters can shut it too. He shut down one of the best passing offenses (one that relied on quick screens – stuff that Cal is considered bad at) in the Pac-10 if not the country.
In other words, Go Bears!
No doubt, and they didn’t have to bring 2 or 3 blitzers every play to do it. They shut down the run and played great coverage.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
Wow
One game the passing defensive showed up and you’re ready to crown Gregory! This is how the defense should have been playing all year!
Jahvid didn’t nearly die last week. That had no effect on the game.
Just let the schedule play out…
we’re 7-3 with Stanford and Washington to play
last year: 6-4 with Stanford and Washington to play

NBA
I’m watching my Warriors get owned by Brandon Jennings, the guy that was ranked fourth on my big board and the guy I wanted us to take in the draft. He had 29 points against us in the third quarter.

Arguably the worst ownership in the league.
The coach doesn’t care.
Our best players all want to leave.
I’m trying to remember the name of the guy that was just about the only good player on the team the owner traded away…

That was pretty damn funny. Then again, I’ve been reveling a bit since we inexplicably didn’t get scorched for 400+ passing yards and a loss.
I’m a Warriors fan and…well, hell. I guess the Clippers really do suck more.
But, more importantly… GO BEARS!
Jennings
Would be in what Golden State for the minimum of what two years decline the option and go to free agency where he would look for an outrageous contract. Jennings only cares about one thing, making money not winning!
Brandon Jennings has scored 50 points.

The “talent” pool in the ASU area is pretty amazing. Enhance, I’m sure, by the presence of drive-through liquor stores. I sh!t you not. They have ’em there.
That wasn’t a bad call – the ball was out before his hand moved forward, it popped forward from impact on someone else.
Why feel sorry for him? He fed the mad expectations of the fan base and couldn’t deliver.
That’s not a bad thing.
To the extent I feel any sympathy for Weis, it’s that by all accounts he’s a decent guy off the field, does a lot of charity work, etc., and I think he catches a lot of petty shit that has nothing to do with his job performance.
LOL

Not much action in the first round
manny was able to keep the fight the middle, cotto connected on a couple combos, but i score that round even.
Funny story about co-ops: One of our roommates from last year (dishonorably discharged from Navy, 28yrs old, arrested for meth possession when he was young, 3 DUIs after age 21, etc etc) is struggling with school. So what does he do? He joins a co-op this year (because no one wanted to live with him). Last I hear he’s addicted to drugs (again), and one day when walking out of the co-op someone throws a 40oz out of a window and hits him on the head.

so many teams at the bottom have three losses you’ve gotta be better than some of them
STAY THIRSTY, MY FRIENDS
by Thoroughbred on Nov 14, 2009 9:52 PM PST up reply actions
Probably so. But 3 TOs (including a pick 6) and a porous run offense being run by battered underclassmen out of position and out of clues doesn’t really suggest that a ranking is needed. If SC can beat UCLA I’ll be thrilled.
Someone on the game thread said it concisely: this is the first time we’ve seen a Carroll coached team get progressively worse all season. Who knows what they’re going to do against UCLA and Arizona?
USC
If I don’t rank them, I’d have to rank a team between Arizona, Houston, West Virginia, Nebraska or Navy.

maybe on his rigorous practices - they get soooo many injuries to their first team every year
STAY THIRSTY, MY FRIENDS
by Thoroughbred on Nov 14, 2009 10:03 PM PST up reply actions
Probably. I don’t read the message boards and whatever, but the general mood over on Conquest Chronicles is that he’s spent too much time on the offense, and that the schemes on both sides of the ball are on the continuum between “out of date” and “vanilla.”
That said, they’ve had crazy injuries most of which have actually been from games as opposed to practice, and if anyone has earned the time to figure out what needs to change and take a crack at it, Pete Carroll is that person.
I thought he was a defensive guy? I think your loss of Holtz, Sark (who I know a lot of ’SC fans hated), half of your D, and Sanchez was more than most people believed. Just like how our loss of our LB corps was huge.
In other words, Go Bears!
Yeah, the defensive losses to the draft were huge, but that’s been compounded by the injuries and the discovery that some of the replacements aren’t maybe as ready as we might have hoped.
Carroll is known as a defensive guy but he’s always intervened in offensive design and play calling. That’s fundamentally why Norm Chow left, and after Leinart graduated a year later we started down the path of blandness on the offense.
As for Sanchez, yeah… the one game with Corp made it clear why Carroll went ape-shit over Sanchez leaving early.
eh, Barkley’s still going to be stud. His play wasn’t that horrible based on what I saw today
STAY THIRSTY, MY FRIENDS
by Thoroughbred on Nov 14, 2009 10:15 PM PST up reply actions
I don’t think you guys were bland by scheme. You had what, Booty and Sanchez (for a year)? Compared to Leinart they are bland.
In other words, Go Bears!
It’s not exactly a lot of variation… and while Booty and Sanchez were lower overall, it was only by comparison to the 2005 season as opposed to the 03 and 04 seasons.
Winning
