College Football Week 11 Morning Open Thread
Injury reports for Cal-Arizona: Cal--Jahvid Best and Anthony Miller (out), Derrick Hill (doubtful), Matt Summers-Gavin (probable); Arizona--Greg Nwoko, Conan Amituanal and Nic Grigsby (questionable)
7 AM PST/10 AM EST
College Gameday from Dallas at TCU!
9 AM PST/noon EST
Tennessee at Ole Miss, CBS--Might not be interesting for this season, but the winner of this game could be a team to watch out for going into next season to be an SEC upstart.
Michigan State at Purdue, ESPN--Ugh. No.
Georgia Tech at Duke, ESPN2--You know, I hate Duke basketball almost as much (if you had to put a gun to my head and ask, "Bin Laden or Coach K", I'd probably have to think about it for awhile). But Duke football behind David Cutcliffe, one win away from bowl eligibility? Oh, I can so get behind that. Go Devils!
Florida State at Wake Forest, ESPNU--you're running out of chances to see the ol'football coach.
Texas at Baylor, FSN/CSN Bay Area--if Robert Griffin had been present, this would've been a fun game. Baylor would take a 10-0 lead then blow it in the 4th quarter. As it is, another Longhorn blowout.
Houston at UCF, CBS College TV--I'm guessing if I had to rewatch one team's games this season, it's going to have to be Case Keenum and his Cougars.
Kentucky at Vanderbilt, SEC TV/CSN California--The SEC is on pace to have ten of twelve teams be bowl eligible. Gotta love how beating up on patsies is not only strategically encouraged, but economically encouraged too.
9:30 AM PST/12:30 PM EST
Missouri at Kansas State, Versus HD--A win by Kansas State and a loss by Nebraska punches their ticket to the Big 12 Championship game. Or they can just beat Nebraska next week in Lincoln. All hail Bill Snyder.

I’m not a morning person, and as such I need extra motivation to get out of bed on the weekends. I usually remedy the situation by watching one of Danzig’s old highlight clips. I watched Wrecking Crew 2008, and it reminded me of how truly special our linebacking core was last year. Granted they are highlights but penetration on almost every play, the downfield pass defense by Worrell Williams and Anthony Felder (10-20 yards off the line of scrimmage), the sheer speed and physicality, its no wonder are defensive backs and defensive fronts have looked dramatically weaker this year.
Morning Games
They really don’t look too appetizing right now. Maybe I should go to sleep or something.

Breaking news out of Waco: 24 y/o woman accused of faking breast cancer for breast implants
Authorities say a Texas woman lied about having breast cancer and spent $10,000 raised at a benefit to have her breasts enlarged. McLennan County sheriff’s investigator James Pack says in court records that 24-year-old Trista Joy Lathern shaved her head to look like a cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy.

Breaking news out of Export, PA: DUI on a tractor
Pennsylvania State Police say a man was drunk when he hopped on a lawn tractor and drove it to buy more beer. Police said 63-year-old Ford Earl Broome, of Export, was stopped by a state trooper at about 8 p.m. on Sept. 6. The trooper said he stopped Broome near a tavern, and that Broome smelled of alcohol and appeared to be drunk. Police said Broome denied drinking, but then acknowledged he “drank a little” before driving the tractor to a bar to buy more beer.
The article goes on to state that Broome’s BAC was twice the legal limit.

Stanford doesn’t surprise me. San Diego is a quality program, the Cardinal were playing on the road, and their team is basically Landry Fields and a bunch of guys anyway.
Now, the Beavs? That’s a bit surprising/embarrassing for the Pac-10.

They were apparently 18-15 last year, near the top of the Southland Conference. KenPom only had them rated 2 spots behind Oregon last year.
And yes, plenty of big on their roster. A cursory glance shows a 7’ 0" 230 lb. senior, a 6’ 9" 230 lb. junior, and a 6’ 9" 260 lb. sophomore. Plenty of big.

by CalBandGreat on Nov 14, 2009 10:35 AM PST up reply actions
Unfortunately, I think it is very unlikely you saw a California Condor in Oakland. First off, there would be no question because they are ENORMOUS and unmistakable with their size. It would be about four feet tall just standing on the side of the road. Also, there are only like 170-something in the wild and they are all tagged and monitored. You probably would have seen a big tag on one of the wings. If there was a condor up here, it would have been on the local news, they are that rare. But the condor has an enormous individual range, and we are well within their historical species range, so we will probably have one up here eventually. You probably saw a turkey vulture.

games still sell out? I remember the days when you could stretch the legs out and not have to worry about missing the game for restroom breaks.
it’s pretty packed for every game until we lose to SC. then fewer people come. there’s been some stretching room in the first quarter this year, but by halftime, the sections have a good amount

who starts at TE? Curran or Sparks? Losing Miller is tough, but stil have good receivers. assuming Vereen gets bulk of the carries. Why doesn’t Sofele play more? kid has some wheels.
he’s had a tough time breaking out of the first tackle. he may move back to slot WR next year, as long as Dasarte Yarnway makes a full recovery. I project he and Vereen will be the 1-2 punch next year

assuming
there are rumblings concerning Gregory. Had to replace three stud linebackers. thought secondary would be playing better this year. just don’t see the blitzing packages very much, or so it seems. can’t give QB like Foles too much time. what is the consensus on Ludwig so far?
Is there a consensus? I rather like what Ludwig has brought this year, and think perhaps this offense could be pretty special with better O-line play.
In any case, I think the revolving offensive coordinator door needs to slow down for a while, so if for no other reason, I’d like to see Ludwig back for a second year. We need to build some offensive continuity, get back to doing one thing and doing it well.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Annoying Stanford Buildup
Has anyone else been a bit bothered by how comfortably the bay area news media and Stanford fans on the blogosphere have heaped and received, respectively, glowing praise for their football team? Rose Bowl? Really? They honestly truly believe they have a good chance to go to the Rose Bowl? Assuming Stanford can win out just doesn’t seem to pass the common sense test. You’re ranked for the first time in like 7 years, you still need to play 3 of the top 6 teams in the conference and a dangerous perennial top-25 team, you’re playing at SC in what has all the makings of a Fuck you world, we’re still SC game, and you’re going to spend tons of ink (Wilner and Ratto) talking about all the minutiae of rose bowl scenarios, and dominating the comment sections with self-praise? Shouldn’t you be worried about not getting embarrassed? Yes, they have a penchant for pulling upsets every season or two, and certainly there was a lot of unnecessary hypothesizing about Cal’s chances before the season came into picture. But seriously, I’d be willing to bet my first yet-to-be-born child that Stanford doesn’t make it to the rose bowl.
What few real fans they have generally seem to have a realistic and even-keeled approach to their strengths and limitations, but there’s something going on in the last month which culminated in the comments to Ratto and Wilner’s man-love articles. It’s not like casual bay area fans have jumped on their bandwagon a la cal in 2004 (we all saw the crowd @ Oregon, and I got another announcement of big game ticket availability) yet here they are supremely confident—bordering on hillariously (don’t think this is a word) arrogant—about their chances this year. Let’s see you get through an SC team ready to fuck you up really bad at their homecoming. Good luck assholes

Hyperbole on the internet? Say it ain't so!
Nice rant there, calbeers. Can’t say I’ve encountered too much ‘Furd love, but then, I can’t say I’ve been going out of my way to read Ratto or Wilner, either. Captain Comeback’s got them to bowl eligibility for the first time since Willingham bolted for ND (and Ty’s been fired twice between then and now), so that’s nice for them, but the delusional Rose Bowl talk is just that — delusional. They’ll come back to Earth soon enough.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

The Lack of Mack's Imposition Attacks My Disposition.
by Spazzy Mcgee on Nov 14, 2009 10:58 AM PST up reply actions
With winning records? I thought I’d have to go way back to the 90’s, but it turns out a 6-4 Cal team beat a 5-4 Stanfurd team 27-3 in 2005. The Cardinal then lost to Notre Dame the next week to finish with a losing record and miss Bowl Season. So sad, too bad for Walt Harris (note also that this was the same season that the ’Furd lost to UC Davis at home, another loss that prevented them from reaching bowl eligibility).
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
by ragnarok on Nov 14, 2009 11:07 AM PST up reply actions 1 recs
FYI, the previous time that both Cal and Stanford went to a bowl game in same year was 1996, when Cal lost the Big Game and both teams finished with a 6-5 record. Cal lost to Navy in the Aloha Bowl to finish 6-6, while Stanford beat Michigan State 38-0 in the Sun Bowl to get to 7-5.
The last time both Cal and Stanford finished with winning records? 1991. The Bears finished at 10-2 after pasting Clemson in the Citrus Bowl, while Stanford finished at 8-4 after losing to Georgia Tech in the Aloha Bowl.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

I am sick
I have a ticket to the game in QQ. Anyone on the peninsula interested? I live in San Mateo but can’t leave the house.
Remember, the enemy's end zone is DOWN!
Holy Fuck! Is anyone going to the game?! This is depressing!

I’m going, but the wife is sick, so I’ll probably have an extra ticket to move as well.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Come sit with me and norcal!

Yeah. It is in the 20s. There will be room, as I have an extra season ticket but I actually like my friends so I don’t invite them to games I think will be bad (as I will get very frustrated and it won’t be fun).

Serious question
Last time I had far too few layers and nearly froze the second half. This time I will not do it again. Would it be overkill to bring handwarmers? Would it make me less of a man?

Considering you’re not a man yet (only by age, my friend — you are such a man in my book), I wouldn’t worry about it.

I brought gloves to USC and it was definitely a good call. I forgot them last week, which was a bad call. I also had only a zip up hoodie on last week, which was a TERRIBLE call.

You first consideration is always dressing so that at no point do you have to leave the game early. Your second consideration should be not looking like at idiot. Beyond that, just find out what Twist is wearing, and wear the opposite.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
I don’t leave the game early anyway, even if I am freezing.
