NYC

Speaking of the awesomeness of our hoops squad, I need recommendations/help:

1. I am heading to NYC next week. What parts of the city/hotels would you recommend staying in for a first time visitor. Trying to be somewhat cost-conscious.

2. I am planning on watching Cal kick Syracuse’s ass at MSG next Thursday night. Anyone have recommendations on good/bad parts of the Garden to watch the game from?

Thanks!

In case you don't get the answers here

I’d check out the New York blogs for an answer to (1), and maybe the Knicks blog (http://www.postingandtoasting.com/) for an answer to (2). Good luck!

Working in the hotel industry in New York City, some of the most unhappy tourists I saw were the ones trying to be “cost conscious.” Before you get there, just know New York is extremely expensive. Living in New York, way more than the Bay Area, made me realize money makes the world go round. Be prepared to spend money.

If you can afford it, I would recommend staying in an older medium size hotel (like the Warwick or the Mansfield) in Times Square or Midtown. I really liked those the most (but they run around $300 a night). The really big hotels in Times Square are good too, maybe more affordable, as long as you don’t mind obnoxious tourist families. I like Times Square for first time visitors—maybe others will disagree—because it is so central, and the subway is super easy to use around there.

I appreciate the help

By cost conscious, I was trying to avoid the $400 plus per night tag. Thanks again.

I’ve had good luck with both priceline and hotwire for decent hotels around midtown in the $200-$300 range. My friend has found $100-200 rooms on priceline as well.

I totally agree with peleodan. I don’t know anything about how much hotels cost in NY but I would recommend staying near Times Square. When the street numbers start going up, you’re on your way to Central Park. When they go down, you’re on your way to great shopping, Korea Town and great ethnic places. Times Square is a good place to be if you have kids too. If you don’t know what to do, just walk around the Theater District (Times Square), and you’ll eventually find something you’ll be interested in.

Plus if you’re into saving money, take a pizza tour. There are many different lame bus tours in NYC but the pizza tour is fun, cheap, and you get to sample some of the best pizza in the city. The absolute best pizza is in Brooklyn (DiFara) but you’ll still get a great sampling.

NYC hotels

in June I stayed at the Casablanca Hotel on W 43rd. About a block from Times Square. Quiet, clean, good location, nice breakfast included. About $200/ night.

Are you serious? Making this a talent issue? I completely disagree. Nonetheless, it was nice to put a voice to a name…

I appreciate the deeper discussion of how to evaluate coaches. Lately with the FIRE [insert coach here] discussion hasn’t had any nuance yet and it’s nice to hear people discuss the issue calmly and with a lack of knee-jerkiness. Fans tend to simplify these debates to the extreme, and Cal fans are no exception, so any detailed debate is a HUGE improvement.

Basketball is especially fun this year because the team is so likable. That you guys discussed your favorite players and Jerome and P Chris didn’t get mentioned speaks volumes.

I don’t see that much talent in our LB corps, to be honest. I think we have a group of small/agile LBs and some slow guys who can’t rush the pass at a BCS level. Our opponents have picked on the slow guys who have to cover TEs and slots

Well, I was uncomfortable with Eddie Young as a starting OLB, but I didn’t think it would be that big a deal. It’s tough for me to be harsh on our players because they’re playing hard for their team and fans, and that’s what I appreciate most. I guess it was so up in the air that I figured at least one of our guys would be a good pass rusher.

As to where I was: In a bad, bad place, my friend.

I think I remember rollonubears predicting this, actually. Mentioning that the linebackers are the heart of the 3-4 defense and that it couldn’t possibly be as easy to replace them as we thought.
