DBD 10.7.09 Daily Bear Dump: Just Add Links
Just another quick primer on what the DBD is. It is designed to keep the FanPost section smooth and free of clutter. Many times people might just have 1 link, but then if youput up a fanpost with just 1 link well thats useless. So, we ask that people put the links in here as a way not only to keep the fanpost section free, but also create one stop shopping for all Cal news. So, keep those links coming!
Of course, if you want to make a statement on the link, feel free to write up your own fanpost. If you have original thought or content on it, write up your own fanpost. But if its just the link, put it up in here. Dont forget to only include a few paragraphs from the story and blockquote everything, so that the legitimate content stands out.
Also, this has turned into, over time, a place to just chill and discuss the matters of the day, be they Cal-sports or non-Cal-sports related. So, that's what the DBD is. And for those who want to read the Cal news, but don't feel like wading through the DBD, each night Berkelium97 posts up the Golden Nuggets, which has the info of the day. Those are just some of the ways that you can get your ENTIRE Cal fix here at the California Golden Blogs. That and we'll mail you heroin if you ask.

3 former Cal players in UFL:
BERKELEY – Three former Cal football players will be on opening day rosters for the inaugural 2009 season of the United Football League. Guard Erik Robertson will suit up for the New York Sentinels, while both long snapper Nick Sundberg and linebacker Worrell Williams are members of the California Redwoods.
Robertson started 24 of 25 possible games over his last two seasons at Cal in 2005 and 2006. As a senior, he earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors and was named the team’s Most Valuable Offensive Lineman when he started all 13 games while batting various injuries. He also earned honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic recognition in each of his final two seasons with the Golden Bears. Robertson signed with the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent in the summer of 2007 and spent the 2008 NFL campaign on the practice squad of the Seattle Seahawks.
Sundberg played as a long snapper in all 50 games possible over his four-year career at Cal from 2004-08, taking over the position in his first game as a true freshman in 2005 and never relinquishing the job. Sundberg was signed as a free agent by the Carolina Panthers in April of 2009 and spent time on the team’s roster before being released prior to the current campaign.

Field hockey loses to Northwestern:
EVANSTON, Ill. – The California field hockey team completed its three-game Midwest road trip with a 3-0 loss at the hands of Northwestern Tuesday afternoon in Evanston, Ill. Despite allowing three goals, Cal keeper Maddie Hand collected a personal-best 14 saves. Cal drops to 3-8 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 11-4.
Northwestern’s Courtney Plaster recorded the first score of the game in the 24th minute. Plaster blasted a shot from five yards out that was partially blocked by Hand’s foot, but still managed to sneak past her and into the cage. The Wildcats scored once more in the first half on a goal by Jill Putnam to take a 2-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Elizabeth Dobbs, who notched an assist on the second goal of the match, put the game away with her score in the 39th minute. Dobbs put Northwestern up by three when she deflected in a hard shot from a penalty corner. Chelsea Armstrong earned the assist.
Redshirt freshman Claire Dougherty and sophomore Jessica Kreck posted Cal’s two shots on goal. Juniors Lisa Lohre and Sophie Sproats each recorded a shot.
Hand made 10 of her 14 saves in the first half.

Bear Bites:
The No. 4-ranked Cal men’s water polo team (8-3, 0-1) will be competing in its second major tournament of the season when the Golden Bears travel to the UCI Invitational (SoCal Invitational) in Irvine. Cal is the fourth-seeded team in a tournament that features the Top 10 teams in the nation and five other squads ranked in the Top 20. The Bears kick-off the competition versus No. 16-ranked Pacific, Saturday, Oct. 10 at 10:40 a.m. Cal had placed fourth at the NorCal Invitational, Sept. 19-20 at Stanford – defeating Santa Clara and UC Santa Barbara before falling to No. 1-ranked Stanford (8-7) and No. 3 USC (8-6). The Bears only other loss this season came last Saturday when USC topped Cal, 8-6, in an MPSF match at Spieker Aquatics Complex. On Sept. 26 in Stockton, the Bears defeated Pacific, 11-7, in a non-conference match.
About the UCI Invitational:
The UCI Invitational features 16 teams, 15 which were ranked in last week’s Collegiate Top 20 poll. Bracket A consists of No. 1 Stanford, No. 8 Pepperdine, No. 9 UC Irvine and No. 19 Princeton. Bracket B includes No. 2 UCLA, No. 7 Long Beach State, No. 10 Navy and Redlands. Bracket C has No. 3 USC, No. 6 UC Santa Barbara, No. 12 UC Davis and No. 18 Bucknell. Bracket D features No. 4 Cal, No. 5 Loyola Marymount, No. 13 UC San Diego and No. 16 Pacific. On Oct. 10, Cal plays Pacific at 10:40 a.m., and if the Bears prevail, they would play the winner of UC San Diego-Loyola Marymount at 5:20 p.m. at Anteater Pool. If Cal wins both of its matches Saturday, it would play at 10:40 a.m. versus the winner of the Bracket A (Stanford, Pepperdine, UC Irvine, Princeton). If Cal wins that match, it will play in the tournament championship at 5:20 p.m. Last season at the SoCal Invitational in Malibu, Cal fell to USC, 12-7, in the semifinals, but rebounded to defeat UCLA, 12-11 in overtime, in the third-place match.

49ers finally sign Crabtree
The 49ers and top draft pick Michael Crabtree reached agreement on a six-year contract in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, bringing to an end an impasse that had kept the prolific Texas Tech wide receiver away from the team for all of training camp and the first quarter of the season
Crabtree and agent Eugene Parker flew out to the Bay Area on Tuesday and entered into negotiations with team president Jed York, general manager Scot McCloughan and chief contract negotiator Paraag Marathe in the afternoon.
In the end, Marathe and Parker were left to complete a deal that the 49ers announced via text at 3:55 a.m. Wednesday.
Act all day, dance all night. Let's get it poppin'... I'm in Bombay, trick!

In the end, he took the almost the same deal minus the money he would have made if he had played the first four games. Plus, he established himself as a prima donna, which could affect future endorsement opportunities.
Way to go.

Ratto has an interesting take on this
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."
--Coach Clark
Yeah, I was thinking the timing was weird with Braylon Edwards’ fight.
Let’s look at the major players in this deal. It’s tough to figure out how the Jets and Browns made off, given that the trade involved an “undisclosed” draft pick. For this exercise, let’s assume a second rounder:
Browns – Mangini’s offense already sucked to the point that they don’t have a stable QB and can’t score. Now, take away their #1 receiver and they’re stuck with nothing to spark the offense. He got a #3 receiver and an LB in return. Basically, Mangini is trying too hard to be Belichick and failing miserably.
Jets – Risk/Reward. Edwards drops a ton of passes, but when he’s on, he can be great (see 2007). The X factor here, though, is how he affects the strong team chemistry the Jets have demonstrated in the past several games.
49ers – Realistically they just added another weapon to an already-solid offense and there’s no need to rush Crabtree in. Also, did not cave into ridiculous demands.
Crabtree – Hurt himself in the short-term. Lost out on four games of pay, preseason experience, team building, and a chance to establish chemistry with Shaun Hill. May not make a difference several years from now if he performs as he is supposed to.
Act all day, dance all night. Let's get it poppin'... I'm in Bombay, trick!
niners might get tampering-related picks too.
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."
--Coach Clark
I’m surprised the Niners didn’t make him wait longer. Can they use him this season?…well, guess so, and, that must be their motive. A few weeks to learn some post routes, and in he goes. But, if you add up the camp and games he has missed, it is more than just subtracting his salary by 4 games….I wonder how much of this new negotiation is being handled by the very young York, and, am I mistaken,or isn’t the Niners previous owner still in town after an awards dinner here for him? Any Chance young Jed called for advice?…or was player negotiations strictly Carmen Policy?

I’m proud of the niners. Holding strong and not giving in, and even lowering their offer because of the holdout. Now the niners control Crabtree for longer without sacrificing much. I came out against bothering with Crabtree, but I’ll gladly take him with this deal in place.

The bottom line is that the Bears find themselves in one heck of a hole. Back to back embarrassing losses that have knocked the Bears out of the conference title picture may have also set the program back a few years.
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."

Just like the loss to Tennessee when Bruce Feldman said he’s never put Cal in the Top 25 again. Or when Cal lost 6 of 7 to finish 2007. This isn’t the first embarrassment.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
I think this is worse, given that expectations are higher and that most of those 6 games were pretty close.
dboneisloose
The expectations were higher than 2007?
Or against Tennessee?
In both of those years Cal was expected to get to a BCS game and in 2007, to take over USC and make a run at the national championship.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
At least in 2007, Cal was competitive in all of those losses and the outcome wasn’t decided until the fourth quarter.
And the Tennessee game at least had a few reasonable excuses (Syd’Quan making his first start and only taking the job a week prior, Nate Longshore in a hostile environment for his first real game, etc.).
I’m not sure there are any excuses for scoring three points the entire game, and that too, only because Tedford basically gave up.

Not many excuses for how bad Cal’s first team offense looked against Tennessee. It was an exact replica of Oregon this year.

The only fair point made was that we embarassed ourselves in front of a number of five-star recruits, which could realistically set the program back.

Most kids don’t care about wins and losses. Back to back ones like that don’t look good. But, if they connected with the players, liked Tedford, liked the campus, and liked the academics, we will get a couple of those guys.

Granted, the two losses were bad. Horrid. But set the program back “a few years”? That’s one helluva 3-2 start. Maybe we should see how the whole season plays out before burying the program like that.

Saudi gets 5 years in jail for frank TV sex talk
(10-07) 05:23 PDT RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP)
A Saudi court on Wednesday convicted a man for publicly talking about sex after he bragged on a TV talk show about his exploits, sentencing him to five years in jail and 1,000 lashes, his lawyer said.
Talking about sex publicly is a taboo in ultraconservative Saudi Arabia.
Lawyer Sulaiman al-Jumeii said he plans to appeal the court’s ruling and is confident the sentence against his client, which includes a ban on travel and talking to the media for five years after his release, will be revoked.

YO reminds us that we have games to play yet
Contrary to popular belief, Cal’s season is not over.
The Bears actually put on their practice uniforms and held a practice Tuesday afternoon, despite back-to-back losses that more than likely knocked them out of the Pac-10 race.
Still, the Bears seem committed to getting back on track and playing more like the team they think they can be. Spirits actually seemed pretty good Tuesday, as players raved about the hard work they put in at practice today.
Cal coach Jeff Tedford understands the urgency of the situation and the need for his team to improve. That’s why he’s handling this bye week differently than most. In most seasons, the players in the regular playing rotation give up the reps to the younger players. In most years, guys like Allan Bridgford and Steve Williams would be getting the bulk of the playing time this week. Not this year. The starters and backups are getting the majority of the reps, with a few sprinkled in for the scout team players.
"We need the work," Tedford said.
Praise be to Tedford!
Look, our hardest games are over. It can’t get any worse. Or is saying that just tempting fate?

This team has the ability to win a lot more games and go to a bowl game. I’m not about to predict 10-2, but I’m certainly not going to predict 3-9, 4-8, or 5-7 either.
Look at the FBS teams we’ve beaten. Maryland just beat Clemson (which isn’t a bad team) last week and I’ve seen enough of Minnesota since we beat them to believe they’re a decent football team that might go to a bowl game. If we were as inept as the collective mood seems to be in Cal nation, we wouldn’t have won at Minnesota and we certainly wouldn’t have beaten Maryland by 39.
Don’t get me wrong – we’ve got issues. You don’t get beat 72-6 in your last 2 games if you don’t have some problems. But it’s far from hopeless.
Praise be to Tedford!
I wasn’t implying that it was hopeless. My point is that the Pac10 is a tough conference, and our season isn’t going to be as easy as we expected it to be.

I was still numb from Oregon, when Riley throught that interception…USC storming downfield for the TD made me think I was back in Autzen. You realise arranged marriages don’t work the way the common stereotype makes them out to, right?
It’s not a blind “walk into your own wedding and meet your husband/wife for the first time as you get married to him/her” situation anymore.
“Arranged marriages” today are basically your parents “setting you up” with a friend or peer’s daughter and you meet her with the mindset of “is she someone I could marry or not”, then you kinda take it on your own terms. It takes most of the guesswork out of whether their family’s values are compatible with your family’s values or not.
Act all day, dance all night. Let's get it poppin'... I'm in Bombay, trick!
So you’re saying that the point of an arranged marriage is:
1. To help set you up with someone because you can’t meet anyone on your own, and
2. To make sure their family and yours gets along?
Neither of those sound like very compelling arguments to me. In addition to which it seems kinda ridiculous to meet someone for the first time with the mindset of “do I want to marry this person”?

1. To help set you up with someone because you can’t meet anyone on your own, and
It’s not because you can’t meet anyone on your own. The whole idea of it being for desperate people is a ridiculous meme that needs to be retired. Would you say the same thing if your friend set up you with a girl?
It’s another avenue, but you get the background research done for you and there are some of us who trust our parents’ judgment.
2. To make sure their family and yours gets along?
To bring up a cliche, marriage is the union of two families, not just two people, so clearly, that’s important. I’m really not sure the model of hating your in-laws and having your family and her family constantly fighting really works.
In addition to which it seems kinda ridiculous to meet someone for the first time with the mindset of "do I want to marry this person"?
It’s not as if you make the decision right away – you take it at your own pace. If you think you’re compatible, you give it a try. If not, you don’t waste your time. It’s efficient.

Yes, clearly in all non-arranged marriages the in-laws hate each other. And clearly the compatibility of the in-laws is more important than the compatibility of the people actually getting married.

It feels weird to say this, but I think I agree with Rishi here, at least to a degree.

I’m not going to get into a huge with you, Rishi, about the concept of arranged marriages. I’m sure there are many, many of those that go great. But if one party doesn’t enter into the marriage with their own consent than I don’t believe much else after that has consent.

And I’m saying that a) that’s a ridiculous blanket statement, b) saying that because of instances in which one party does not agree that the whole institution is a sham is like saying that the institution of marriage in general is a sham because divorce occurs, and c) it’s highly offensive not only to members of the faith, but all those who have had real arranged marriages (read: some of our parents).

Well, you know, Twist, family-arranged marriages have been the norm pretty much everywhere throughout the entire history of the world, at least among people with property. This is just as true in Europe and America, as elsewhere. And no one considered it evil or oppressive. In fact, a family would have thought it ridiculous and an abdication of their responsibility to their children not to arrange a proper marriage for them. This is not women being sold off to some horrible ogre. This is young people being raised to believe, and believing, that their parents will make this important decision in their best interests.
It is only in the 19th Century, with the Romantic Era that people even began considering non-arranged marriages. It’s not our way, but it’s not automatically wrong. It all depends on the circumstances.

Merely because we were discussing misogyny in a specific context here does not mean that I have a different view on misogyny in other contexts. I don’t doubt that people of most any time, place, or era will take actions that they believe to be good and just. It does not necessarily make it either good or just.
I’m well aware of the indescribable burden of femininity for the first infinity or so years of humanity’s existence. Fortunately, in recent times, things have changed for the better. And arranged marriages like the ones Rishi describes are hopefully the wave of the future.

That’s a really depressing article. It seems like as the author tries to straddle the border between the two cultures she grew up with, but by honoring both she pushes away suitors from either tradition.
Even more sadly, she willingly seems to be defining herself by her (lack of a) marriage as much as her family seems to:
I was made to eat dinner at the children’s table—they sent out for Domino’s pizza and Pepsis—because as an unmarried woman, I didn’t quite fit in with the adults. As much as I resented my exile, I realized that maybe I didn’t want to be eating vegetable curry and drinking rum with the grown-ups. Maybe that would have meant they’d given up on me, that they’d stopped viewing me as a not-yet-married girl but as an unmarriageable woman who’d ruined her youth by being too choosy and strong-headed.

Jeff Tedford has certainly lost his reputation as a quarterback guru. After such a long string of accomplished protégés, including Kyle Boller and Aaron Rodgers at Cal, the Bears have gone three years without a formidable passing game. Kevin Riley showed signs early in the season that he’d turned the corner, but these past two weeks, with Oregon and USC loading the box and shutting down Jahvid Best, Riley has completed less than 40 percent of his passes and failed to reach the 200-yard mark either week. Obviously, Cal’s defense has been exposed as well. They got almost no pressure on either Jeremiah Masoli or Matt Barkley, who promptly tore them apart. And once those teams got significantly ahead, the Bears had no choice but to pass, thus rendering Best a non-factor. But think back to Tedford’s one elite-caliber team, the 2004 squad that went 10-1 in the regular season. The combo of Rodgers and J.J. Arrington made them incredibly tough to defend. Without a dependable quarterback and/or a game-breaking receiver, like DeSean Jackson, Cal has been one-dimensional. As Best goes, so, too, do the Bears.

BTW, how do you block-quote multiple paragraphs?
Basically, extra space before the blockquote begins. From the CGB FAQ:
I can’t get blockquotes to work correctly. HALP!
It’s an annoying problem, but Berklium97 seems to have nailed down the problem. I’ll let him explain:
Berklium97: You have to have a blank line of space between the last line of text and the beginning of the blockquote (basically, hit enter twice). For example:
pre-blockquote text
-blockquote-text text text
(new paragraph) text/-blockquote-
will look like this:
pre-blockquote text
text text text
(new paragraph)text
But, if I put a paragraph space between the pre-blockquote text and the blockquote text…
pre-blockquote text
[space]
-blockquote-text text text
(new paragraph) text /-blockquote-
…then it will look like this:
pre-blockquote text
text text text
(new paragraph) text

Condi Rice, the secret behind Furd recruiting success?
Recruit who considered Cal chose the Furd because of the former Secretary of State.
“She heavily influenced my decision,” said Jones, who will enroll in 2010. “How many colleges can say they have a Condoleezza Rice and that she can be a mentor to you? It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me.”
Last March, after two terms in the Bush administration, Rice returned to Stanford as a teacher and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution. Originally hired in the early 1980s as an assistant professor, she has served numerous capacities over the decades, including freshman adviser, member of the faculty senate and provost.
Although Rice’s duties have changed, her love for Stanford sports has not waned. Whether it is meeting with recruits, lifting weights alongside athletes before dawn, attending games or serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the women’s golf team, she is a passionate member of the Stanford athletic community.

Update on Cecil Whiteside
Still committed to Cal but keeping his options open.
Linebacker Cecil Whiteside (Newport Beach, Calif./ Newport Harbor) committed last April to Cal and took an official visit to Berkeley this past weekend.
The four-star prospect is a talented two-way standout who committed to the Bears to play outside linebacker, but is one of the state’s top tight end prospects as well.
“I had a good time there, I wish I was out there battling with the team,” Whiteside said. "The game didn’t go well at all but overall, it was still a nice visit. I met some great people and I got to hang out with a lot of the recruits.
“D.J Holt was my host and he’s a great guy. The highlight for me was just meeting all the other guys on the visit since there were like 15 recruits there. I mostly hung out with Cassius Marsh, he’s a cool dude and we all bonded pretty well.”
Whiteside has always maintained that despite his commitment to the Bears, he wanted to take a few other official visits and that remains the case.
“I don’t have any other dates set, but I know what schools I want to check out,” Whiteside said. “Arizona State, Arizona and Colorado are three schools I want to check out and those will probably be after the season but I really don’t know for sure. I’m just going to play it by ear.”
Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com
I don’t see anything to be concerned about. Seems that Cal-USC had little effect on Whiteside’s methodology for choosing schools, he was going to look at these other ones anyway.

Then Twist would’ve made them laugh with him. The ultimate win.
I wonder how many of the players play with the realization that their time at Cal is limited, and once they’re gone, it’s unlikely that they’ll play football anywhere near that level ever again. With every game they play, there’s one fewer game left, so that’s why I have at least some faith that the team hasn’t “lost heart” or given up. Most of these guys have been playing football for all or most of their formative years; it doesn’t make sense that they’d be willing to give that up so easily. But, only they know how they think/feel. There’s probably a better way to phrase all of this.
It came up in that Contra Costa Times article on the 2003 win over USC:
The game had little impact on Robertson’s career at Cal. A junior in 2003, he threw only 11 more passes the rest of his college career, seeing mop-up duty in seven games.
After graduation, Robertson spent two years teaching English at a school in Japan. “An unbelievable experience,” he said. Today he lives in San Diego, where he’s trying to break into the video game business.
For the unlikely hero of the victory over USC, never taking another meaningful snap at Cal remains hard to swallow.
“I try not to think about it as much anymore,” Robertson said. "Sometimes I think, ‘What if I got to play a little more?’
“I am more than happy and proud to be part of that game. But that was the last time I ever played, and that’s kind of hard.”

Have you played team sports at the varsity high school level or beyond? If so, was said team any good? Did they win a championship? I ask not in a condescending way…but there are familiar qualities of championship teams. It has nothing to do with being jovial or not. It’s about “we just embarrassed ourselves, but let’s at least be united, leave the field together, and go listen to what the coaches and our captains have to say so we can get better.”
How the fuck is Tedford supposed to address the team when 15 of his players are out on the field still? He doesn’t…and that gets back to a familiar criticism. This program has no leadership.
