Golden Nuggets: Because You Have to Find Something to Smile about from Yesterday

BEST. LEAP. EVER.
After the jump we have quotes/reactions to the game from players, coaches, and various media figures. Tomorrow I'll have highlights from the rest of the weekend in Cal sports.
Tedford:
On the team's mentality following today's game
"I have confidence in these guys. I don't know what is going to happen against UCLA. All I know is that I have a lot of confidence that we will prepare and we'll have good attitudes. There is a lot of football left to be played. There is no way in the world that we are folding our tent. I don't believe that about this team. We'll have a great bye week, we'll get healthy and we'll bounce back.On Cal's opening drive turnover
"I don't think any air came out of the balloon. I don't think the guys ever quit or gave up. It was never a lack of effort."On whether USC was that much better than Cal
"They are that much better than us if we don't execute, and we don't throw and catch the football and protect the pass and those types of things. You have to make plays. You can't turn the football over against them. If they don't turn the football over, they're a tough team to beat."
Brett Johnson:
On not letting the season slip away like in 2007
"There's always that concern, but we don't have the same guys from the '07 team. The '07 team had a lot of different guys with different mentalities. This team has a lot of guys with better personalities and guys that won't let this drag them down."
- After the game Tedford said "Kevin is our starter."
- ESPN's bowl projections are revised. Schlabach predicts we'll play BYU at the Poinsettia Bowl and Feldman anticipates a Cal-Clemson Emerald Bowl.
- Ted Miller found three positive aspects from Saturday's game. After the press conference, he says all Cal can do is work hard and try to get better.
- Monte Poole describes the past two games and as another heartbreak to ruin a promising year for Cal fans. Ray Ratto talks doom and gloom.
- After a rough start, Gregory is proud of the way his defense played.

Tepper is awful
Horrible left tackle, needs to be benched and at least get a young guy some experience. He’s slow and looks weak, gets beat by DE on both bullrush power moves and speed moves. And his run blocking is average at best.
He hasn't had his best game the past two weeks
But Oregon and USC have had good success getting on the left tackle the past two years, whether it be Schwartz or Tepper over there.

But if I’m not mistaken, he’s also been the sole o-lineman to jump offsides a few times this season and caught for holding a time or two as well. He’s a 6 year veteran, he should know better at this point. I tend to agree that he’s not very good. Benched? Not so sure, but he can stand some big improvement.

Cal's Grade
Well folks we sat through four quarters of hell and all I have to say is five times in the red zone is not a coaching or game plan problem. It is an execution problem that falls squarely on the shoulders of Kevin Riley. Riley gets an F. I feel bad for the Old Blues who are getting squeezed for a ton of money and have to sit through such humiliation Wasn’t the 80s bad enough? If something doesn’t change and fast we may be looking at loosing The Axe to the turds… More than an Old Tight Wad Hill alumni can handle… If this keeps up I may need to go back to the hill and light up a fat one with the guys who have been up there since the 60’s just so I can cope with what was once a team with so much potential..

wow. Hello. I haven’t seen you in these parts before. I like the way you think. I hate to jump on another QB again, but its getting close. If Riley doesn’t get MUCH better against UCLA, and Tedford sticks with him like Ayoob and Longshore, things could get very interesting…

I think two plays summed up why we had no chance to win the game:
(1) Taylor Mays beating Jahvid Best to the corner without even taking the angle. Taylor Mays is faster than Jahvid Best. I think it was either 10-0 or 17-0 but I gave up hope at that moment.
(2) Kicking a field goal with 12 seconds left in the first half on second down. This made no sense. Tedford was just happy not getting embarrassed I guess.
Otherwise the crappiness of our team was overshadowed by the dangerousness of our stadium on the West side. They just shouldn’t be playing in the stadium while construction is going on if they can’t figure out how to make it safe.
How can a God become embarrassed?
Stadium will be fine.

I dont think hes referring to any problems with those on the field. I think he means that with half the exits to the stadium blocked off, so many people are being funneled to so few exits that it creates a real safety issue.
On this matter, I’ll have to take his word for it. Many others have agreed with him. My experience on the east side was not quite the same, but that is probably because there were no changes to the exits, because I got to the game like 45 minutes early, because I never leave my seat area no matter how bad I have to pee!

It's Terrifying
It’s very dangerous and very scary in the corridors on the west side. I will not be at all surprised if fans are seriously injured or even crushed to death in those corridors.
Cal needs all the money it can get right now from stadium revenue. Please do not make this a big issue. Your safety is assured.

And I should all, as I told Sandy in my 2007 e-mail to her, Cal would suffer a whole lot more if there were a tragedy at the stadium. In addition to loss of life, it would cost Cal tons of money, horrible publicity, and a loss of reputation.
Alright now, jeez. Look I am sure Cal has taken all the necessary measures to ensure your safety. If they felt it was in anyway unsafe, they would not be holding games there. This game was an exception in that there were almost 72,000 people there, making congestion inevitable. That will not happen again this year, rest assured.

I do, I was just looking for a pointless argument I guess. I am very aware that the stadium rests directly on the Hayward fault. I have known that for many years.
So I guess they better move the games to the Coliseum right away! Or, you could just relax. Odds are if the big one did hit, you could still be killed, even with the full stadium renovations. Which by the way they are not even working on now. So, what’s it gonna be? Stay home or go to the games and support the Bears? I know the last two games have been rough and all, but it sounds like you guys are looking for excuses not to attend games. Read up on it and let me know.
"Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect."
Vince Lombardi
What is the matter with you?
This has absolutely nothing to do with the Hayward fault. This has absolutely nothing to do with the last two games. As for me looking for excuses not to go to Cal games, I have been going to Cal games since 1965, and I have had Cal season tickets since 1977. I have sat through more hideous, disasterous games and season in that stadium than you can even imagine. Why you think the possiblity of people getting crushed do death due to inadaequate security and crowd control should be ignored, and Cal should just keep its fingers crossed for the next couple of years, hoping nothing happens, I can’t imagine.
OK, you have made your point. So maybe we should start a serious movement to abandon Memorial till the end of contruction? Or longer? Perhaps forever?
"Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect."
Vince Lombardi
CaliSeth, what are you arguing? I am so confused by the stance you are taking here.
All aboard the Jahvid Best rickshaw!
by rollonubears on Oct 4, 2009 10:23 PM PDT up reply actions
Look, I could take this non argument further, but what’s the point? Bottom line is, the fault isn’t going anywhere. If you are very concerned about public safety at Memorial, perhaps you should consider staying away. This is a problem that will never go away. The fault will always be there, and so too will the risk. Renovations will only go so far in addressing the structural safety at Memorial in the event of a catastrophic earthquake. In the event of a severe earthquake, thousands and thousands of people would die. Here is an interesting link from the USGS.
CalBear81, I understand your grave concern regarding this issue. I share some of your concerns. But really, what is to be done to rectify the sittuation? It is one thing to highlight the issue, it is another to offer a solution. We must seek positive solutions to this sittuation.
"Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect."
Vince Lombardi
I make a joke about the faultline, and then you absolutely go off thinking that we are arguing on the fault line. This is just bizarre.

CaliSeth, I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you are serious about this, and give you a serious response. I’m not talking about the earthquake fault, or danger from earthquakes. Take a look at my posts. I never mentioned the fault or earthquakes. That has nothing to do with my concern, or those of any of the other people who have mentioned this issue.
The problem is a complete lack of security and crowd control in the narrow, jam-packed corridors on the west side of the stadium. This problem would exist if the stadium were located in an area where there is absolutely no danger of earthquakes.
It has nothing to do with abandoning Memorial Stadium. It has to do with Cal providing adequate security and crowd control.
Well jeez, that seems easily fixable. Hire more security guards and improve crowd control measures. Again though, as I stressed above this was a very unique sittuation. Prior to last weeks collapse this was one of the biggest hyped games in years, and USC traveled well. Crowd was nearly to capacity until later in the game.
I cannot fathom a crowd anywhere near that size again this season, barring some miraculous turn of events.
"Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect."
Vince Lombardi
There’s next season too.
But at least if I’m crushed to death, I’ll know that you and I are friends. <3
I do consider you a friend CalBear81, and I apologize for the mini argument. Sometimes I just scan posts and latch on to certain phrases and words. I should have read yours more carefully. What you are asking for is clearly reasonable. The issues should be addressed so that in the future (no telling when at this point) appropriate crowd control measures can be taken.
I think they were just overwhelmed this game. Luckily no one was hurt.

Take a look at this post from today by Ken Crawford on Excuse Me for My Voice called “Safety First”:
http://excusemeformyvoice.com/blog/
And this one called “Memorial Stadium – Uncomfortable Venue or Dangerous Death Trap.”
http://excusemeformyvoice.com/blog/?p=1815
The safety issue on the west side wasn’t the crane, it was the gridlock trying to get from sections E – G. I was stuck, basically not moving for about 15 minutes. It was pretty scary.
Was this getting into the stadium before the game?
I noticed that it was a lot more crowded, probably because the game was sold out. I doubt we’ll encounter that again; I think Saturday’s game is going to be the last sell out we’ll have at Memorial Stadium for a while.
This is not a one-time thing, or even limited to the construction issue. I had a horrible experience at the Tennessee game in 2007, when I genuinely feared that my nephew and I, or others, might be crushed by the absolutely jam-packed, unmoving hordes of people crammed into those tiny corridors. I sent an e-mail to Sandy describing the situation, and pleading for more security and crowd control, but I never got an answer, and no changes have been made.
Now this has been made worse by the construction. It used to be that you could at least walk down the stairs to the outside of the stadium, walk to another staircase and head back up. Now many of those exists are closed off, so there is no place to escape. Like I said, I won’t be surprised if something terrible happens.
It has always been bad for sellouts, but cutting off the entrances on the West side has made it even worse. In an emergency, most people wouldn’t even know which direction they should head. And there was absolutely no security directing people.
In an emergency, most people wouldn’t even know which direction they should head.
Because the USC band was playing during the announcement!!!!!

Eh. Avoid west side entrances/exits.
If you’re really worried about safety, roll east on Channing and then north on Prospect to Gate 6. It wasn’t crowded at the USC game, it probably won’t be for any other sell out. If you do this, you also have the option of rolling northeast along Stadium Rim Way to Gate 9, where Rim Way meets N. Canyon Road. It’s waaaaaaaay up the hill and most people probably won’t have made it up there.
If you see unmoving hordes, avoid them. There’s a better way.
Not sure if all of you received this from SB or not...
but here’s an email SB sent to ticket holders on this subject:
“Dear Cal Football Fans:
During Saturday’s Cal football game against USC, we know that many of you who attended had an unfortunate and unexpected gameday experience due to the long lines and congestion throughout much of Memorial Stadium. I want to apologize and, at the same time, make sure we move quickly to understand exactly what went wrong and let you know about the steps being taken to address it.
We have almost three weeks before our next home game against Washington State on Oct. 24, and with the help of the UC Police Department and other experts, we will be working diligently to improve pedestrian flow and crowd control.
We take your safety seriously and many valuable lessons were learned at the game. We did have additional staff placed in the concourse to assist with crowd control, but obviously it wasn’t enough, and we need to do a better job of monitoring and directing traffic."
It goes on but you get the point.
by SonofCalifornia on Oct 6, 2009 7:42 PM PDT up reply actions
Exactly. You will not see another crowd like that this season. All of the casual fans will vanish. Your safety is fine.

Was # 1 the play on that 3rd and 1 where we ran the misdirection pitch to the outside, running toward the SC sideline? I didn’t like the playcall there against a defense as fast and as disciplined as SC’s. And as for Mays being “faster” than Jahvid, I’m not sure I’d go there. Without seeing the play again (and why the f**k would I?), it seemed to me that Mays recognized the play and essentially got a head start toward the spot before Best even got the pitch. Mays’ read of the play had as much to do with the result as his speed.
Praise be to Tedford!
Mays did have a good angle, and read it perfectly, but I thought the impressive thing was, that instead of using the best angle, which might have given Best a chance to cut back, the instead took the shallowest angle possible – if Best would have cut back he just would have run into Mays (hopefully that description makes some sense). Saying Mays is faster may be a bit much, but I think Best gets the corner there against pretty much any other player in the country. It was impressive.
It’s the reason Mays was considered a first round pick last year and will certainly go in the top 10 this year. Best might or might not pan out in the NFL, but we pretty much know that Mays is destined for stardom, health permitting.

The game would probably have gone differently if not for the first INT, but yeah, those plays seemed emblematic of the night, didn’t they?
Here’s the official explanation from Tedford about the field goal.
On the field goal attempt at the end of the first half
We wanted to put points on the board. There were 12 seconds left and I didn’t want it to be a situation where somebody caught the ball or we got sacked and we came away without putting points on the board. I thought it was a nice drive. We moved the ball down the field nicely. We just missed it.

Absolutely retarded playcalling.
1) Wasted a time-out. Punt team was on a field. Call a time-out…to PUNT.
2) Wasted 17 seconds when it was USC’s turn to punt. WAITED 17 seconds to call a timeout!! The whole goddamn YA section was calling a timeout.
3) Wasted a play at the end of the half to go for a field goal on second down with 12 seconds left. He’s essentially saying that he was hedging against his own teams ability to execute. Well, what happened? MIS-execution on a field goal.

I was fine sitting in Autzen for 4 quarters of pitiful play. Had a good time in Oregon with friends, even though we got crushed and Gameday decided to not come.
I was fine sitting in Memorial Stadium for 3 quarters of pitiful play. I don’t say 4, because for the first time ever, I left a game early.
But now 2 days later…something snapped.
We are goddam terrible. I don’t even know if we can finish this year with a winning record.
Our stadium is godawful. Memorial Stadium is slag concrete held up with toothpicks. There is NO parking. Bart sucks. Walk sucks. Walk back suck. Bart the 2nd time sucks. Bear’s lair line to get in, line to get beer. Henrys, line to get in. Go to a frat house to party, okay, better. Walk up to the stadium, sucks. My fiancee was getting crushed in the crowd. Okay, halftime…go up to get some fresh air. Takes 20 minutes to get up the steps, oh look, halftimes over.
Compare that to my experience at Minnesota—nice clean facilities, shuttles, parking.
Compare that to Autzen. Wow, a nice indoor practice facilities place to tailgate 1 minute away from the stadium, with vendors selling beer and food with NO LINES even tho a football field sized facility was packed.
SIGH. CAL is simply not a football school. We might get there in 5-10 years with all the improvement, but it’s goddam pitiful right now.
