Non-Cal Football Halloween Thread & Cal-USC Women's Volleyball Thread

This is to discuss tonight's games. To discuss the Cal-Arizona State game, scroll up to the postgame thread!
Also, use this to discuss the Cal-USC women's volleyball game--free online stream from CalBears.com!
USC at Oregon, 8 PM EST/5 PM PST, ABC in the West Coast/Northeast/Upper Midwest, ESPN2 elsewhere: I've got to be honest. Oregon has beaten UCLA, Washington and Wazzu. Purdue is stumbling along, Utah, although formidable, is a step slower than last season, and although we'll probably have a better idea after ASU, Cal might or might not be their only quality win up to this point (road dates at Furd, at Arizona and home games against ASU and OSU loom). USC might not have looked dominant this season, but they have won at Ohio State, at Notre Dame, at Cal, and at home against Oregon State. It's hard to say these teams are on an equal playing field when they've been playing radically different quality opponents.
Besides, haven't we seen this script before? The Trojans have only lost once to a team ranked at the time they played them (Dixon and Oregon 2007), and when it's a big game, they're usually up to the task of beheading a few opponents and racking up 500 yards of offense. Before you start saying, "Hey, Matt Barkley isn't ready for the big-time stage", ask yourself, "Do you trust Jeremiah Masoli, a new offensive line and two freshmen running backs to start smashing up USC's defense?"
(pondering....pondering....)
No.
Texas at Oklahoma State, 8 PM EST/5 PM PST, ABC in the heartland, ESPN2 elsewhere: Can't stand the thought of two Pac-10 teams dueling for a conference title we've probably long since lost out on? Check out the Longhorns as they try to slog their way through their final formidable road test in Stillwater.
South Carolina at Tennessee, 7:45 PM EST/4:45 PM PST, ESPN. I have no compelling reason for you to watch this game.
Wazzu at Notre Dame in San Antonio, 7:30 PM EST, 4:30 PM PST, NBC. Someone please tell me why THIS was the game the Irish chose for primetime.
Kansas State at Oklahoma, 7 PM, 4 PM PST, FSN HD. Your leaders in the Big 12 North are currently Kansas State and Iowa State. Kansas State is also four touchdown underdogs against Landry Jones this weekend. Can we disband the Big 12 title game and hand the crown to Texas already?
In progress
UCLA at Oregon State, Fox Sports Prime Ticket/Regional coverage: I wonder how many times Karl Dorrell started conference play 0-5.

He just doesn’t have any jitters. Everyone knows Masoli, for all his effectiveness as a runner, isn’t the best with the throws.
I think USC wins and heads to the MNC ultimately.
That’s be cool because people will nitpick the Trojans to death and not do so to their opponents

Well, Cal has outrecruited them or at worst been on par with them even as theyve had a decent 3 year run or so here.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
I mean, beating USC and getting the Rose Bowl is huge (and there are a ton of mutual recruits at this game), but it’s not a dealmaker. If Cal does well to close the season, we’ll get a fair amount. I mean, we still have the potential to have our best win-loss record as a team.

Definitely. Their O-line looked lost against Boise St. Now they’re opening huge holes against USC? That’s a great turnaround.

To be fair, it’s USC 2nd string…
I have no idea why Kelly didn’t run LaMichael James more in that game. He’s such a better fit for this offense.

Now, while it is unlikely that Oregon will end up in the national championship game, it would be tough to argue that this wasn’t far and away the performance of the year by any team.

Whose domicile? OUR DOMICILE!
I don’t think this is true more than any other offense. Masoli’s going to take hits on running plays, but no more so than any other running back, and the running backs are doing the same things they would do in any other offense. Oregon’s had terrible luck with injuries, but I wouldn’t attribute that to the scheme without a convincing argument.

Fair enough. I’d need to do the research on quarterbacks who run as much as they pass, but I’d figure that if you get hit more, you’re likely to get injured more. Which is true of any spread/option offense.
I wonder what the QB health bill been’s like for other schools who’ve run similar schemes.

It’s pretty amazing that Tebow didn’t get injured til this year.
You gotta take into account the fact that dropback passer’s getting hit from the blindside aren’t as prepared to take a hit as those running it. I could see how that would be a huge factor. A guy standing in the pocket unprotected is much more likely to get a devastating square hit than someone covering up and avoiding tackles, I would think.

That’s true, I’m not sure exactly the science of unexpected collisions. I just feel that when you’re running, you have a 100% chance of getting hit, and when you’re passsing, you probably have a 20-30% chance. So the more hits you absorb the more likely you are to get injured.
I could be wrong.

–Cal is now bowl-eligible for the seventh straight year.
–Jahvid Best said he tweaked his left ankle on the first play of the final drive of the game and sat out the rest of the way. Best said he could have returned but the offense was moving so well, there was no need to change things up.
–Best now has 16 career touchdowns, two shy of the Cal record.
–Pac-10 leader Mike Mohamed had 12 more tackles.
–Kicker Giorgio Tavecchio said that was the first game-winning field goal he has ever made at any level.
–Jeff Tedford waited until pregame warm-ups to decide on his kicker today. Tavecchio said he found out he was kicking about 20 minutes before the start of the game.

I’m sure I’ve used this line here before – when I was at a freshman orientation the summer before I started at SC, we were all outside the Von Kleinschmidt Center, they had the band out playing Tribute to Troy, everyone’s doing the fight on gesture, and I was looking at all these blond people waving their arms and thought shit it’s Nuremberg in flip-flops.
Now it’s really more Pavlovian – if I get distracted during an offensive sequence and I hear Fight On, I know they got a first down. Otherwise I don’t really hear it in the sense of being aware of or annoyed by the repetition.
and thought shit it’s Nuremberg
You know I’ve always felt that football games are a bit like the old Nazi rallies with all the chants, the abuse you get if you don’t conform (i.e. wear red to Cal), etc. Everything but the racism
In other words, Go Bears!
