I declare a moratorium on Kevin Riley bashing for at least, like, a week. I suggest Verran Tucker as the replacement goat. (That drop was inexcusable.)

I think it’s probably more the scheme. Cal had a lot of 2-3 yard rushes today. I got the general sense—perhaps incorrectly—that the Bears were opening up some holes in the ASU line, but they couldn’t extend those gaps into or through the second level.

That was the first time Cal’s ever thrown out of the Wildcat right? Save it for 30 seconds left in the game…wow that’s some C-O jones.

Actually, I still would. It really made no sense to do that there. Going for a TD? Okay, I get that. But going with that play in that situation was a head scratcher.
Praise be to Tedford!
Ya
That’s my point. Run the ball, a fairly safe pass – sure, give her a shot to avoid the FG. But trick plays are inherently risky.
I would argue that was a fairly safe pass. It’s only not safe if you assume Vereen can’t throw the ball very well. I’ll give the coaches the benefit of the doubt that their trust in Vereen is warranted.
I still contend that was simply a great defensive play; Burfict diagnosed the pass almost immediately. This play could have been a simple pitch and catch had the Bears done a better job selling the run.

I actually really liked that play call. And it almost worked, but for a really nice play by Burfict. Can’t believe that kid’s just a freshman. Maybe you criticize the call for clock-management reasons, but I don’t think it was any riskier than running the ball; a fumble was just as likely, or not, as an INT.
Go Bears!
by California Pete on Oct 31, 2009 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions
I thought it bordered on the insane. On 2nd and goal from the 6, with the game on the line, you want to have a running back throw a pass in the end zone from the Wildbear? Trying a play we’ve never run in a game? Asking a running back to make a decision throwing the ball? We were begging for disaster to have called that.
Admittedly, at that point in the game, I was hoping upon hope that we were going for the TD, leaving nothing to chance with Tavecchio. But that was a very strange and, I believe, unwise decision to try that.
Praise be to Tedford!
Isn’t the fact that the play was never run in a game precisely why it had a chance of working? Although, they didn’t fall for it. Maybe Shane didn’t sell the run well enough.
It’s funny how I criticize Tedford for being too conservative, and then they do something like throw out of the wildcat for the winning touchdown down one point… That playcall took at least a year off of my life. The random people watching with me (at work) didn’t know it was the FIRST TIME we had thrown out of the wildcat, and they were surprised by my reaction of incredulous horror. Thank the Lord we didn’t turn over the ball.
You’re welcome.

Bouncing Back
What I liked about this game: a lot of our players who made mistakes were able to come back and make it happen. some bad throws by Riley – NEGATED by some awesome throws by Riley. That last drive proves he’s a gamer. That facemask by Jones? NEGATED by a big time catch on the very next play. I loved how our team bounced back from the penalties, dropped passes, etc.
Also – I liked the playcalling, although that one pass by Vereen was kinda circumspect. that one trick play with Sofele was also unnecessary.
Yeah.. we have Good Ross and Bad Ross too… makes that nice first grab that led to TD. drops that for sure first down when we were up 20-14

Ross’s dropsies are really bad. Riley struggles, but I don’t think we have other options realistically. We have other options than Ross, Jones doesn’t drop a damn thing.
Different kinds of receivers. Ross you want on those YAC plays because he’s shiftier and more elusive. Jones you want on the deep plays because he’s fast as hell and can outjump the competition.

ASU got some penalties against us that they shouldn’t have. The Conte PI was bs, the Miller holding call was bs too.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
The Conte PI should have been BS
But technically I don’t think it was. He was playing the ball but he interfered with the receiver’s ability to catch the ball.
So long as you play the ball, you are fine. Defenders have equal right to the ball as receivers. The announcers were wrong to say that “that call will go against the defense every time,” implying that the defender doesn’t have equal right to the ball.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
I didn’t read your Miller hold comment as well. But again, you’re right. It’s interesting that the ref who threw the flag was the one left sideline downfield, where his vision of the hold would have been blocked.
(Unless another ref threw it as well and i’m mistaken, but either way there was LITTLE contact if any, and vereen had already broken it so if you really wanted to call it .. you’re just doing your job as a pac10 ref i guess).
it’s not like cal fans are happy with a 30+ point lead where they let up and only win by 17 either.
i’m going to thoroughly enjoy this one. you’re an idiot if you didn’t think this was a great win for us. pick apart the team on monday, today’s saturday and WE JUST F*CKIN WON.

I read/post on both. I’ve often wondered what makes BI so much more manic-depressive than CGB — it could be because they don’t have more rational people like Hydro or Avinash leading up every topic with a level-headed analysis, so the crazies are free to make as many wacky topics as they like.
Also, there are trolls there, some of whom disguise themselves as Cal fans.
I will say, though, that BI is still way more rational than a lot of other CFB message boards — if you check out the free boards for, say, Oregon or UCLA or ASU, it’s way more of an irrational muddle.
That is an interesting thought on the “crazies are free to make as many wacky topics as they like.” We do have FanPosts here, which does allow that, but we rarely see really insane ones. Although, Rocky is working on changing that. ;)!

I don’t know the answer to this question. I know that it hasn’t happened in at least 10 years (Cal beat ASU in 1999 with a 4th Qtr FG to win 24-23, but that came with more than 7 minutes left to play, and the defense had to hold off the Sun Devils’ offense to preserve the win).
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
The 1991 kick by Doug Brien appears to be the last time
Based on my quick research of past Cal football media guides.
The honorable mentions, but not quite last minute game winners:
- Tim Wolleck kicked a 27 yard FG with 5:56 left in Cal’s 13-12 win at Oklahoma in 1998. The FG capped a 10 play, 60 yard drive.
- Jeremy Hershey kicked a 25 yard FG with 7:11 left in Cal’s 24-23 win at home vs. ASU in 1999. The FG capped a clutch, epic 6 play, 19 yard drive
Praise be to Tedford!
We beat Oklahoma in 1998?? We played Nebraska AND Oklahoma in the same year

We beat Oklahoma 2 years in a row. Won 40-36 at Memorial in 1997 and then won at OU in 1998. Those were the dark pre-Bob Stoops years at OU.
Praise be to Tedford!
Is that because you sat next to me or because you watched some dudes butt crack the entire time (MORE ON THAT STORY LATER!)
PS When we hugged after the Tavech kick and you pounded on my back, your arm cast really hurt me,. You’ll be hearing from my lawyer!
CalBear, wll you represent me?

First time poster…..came from the Cal Alumni viewing event in Las Vegas, yeah I live here. I feel like Riley really grew up on that last drive. His nerves didn’t take over for once. Our 3 road wins are definitely are 3 best wins of the year,
Thanks for posting! Hopefully you don’t gamble like mad tonight in a postgame euphoria.
I agree, the fact that our 3 best wins of the season are on the road is a good sign for the rest of the season.

Riley did well on the last drive. ASU helped out by blitzing many defenders opening up things down the field.

I wonder how much this had to do with the hurry-up offense. Perhaps we’ll see Cal go to this, as a change of pace, in future games even when the clock isn’t an issue?

Yes, that came to my mind too. The hurry up was probably preventing ASU from getting the substitutions they wanted and their DL was probably exhausted. I mean, they pass rush. Cal completes as pass for first down. They have to run to the new LOS to set up. Next play, pass rush, another pass, more yardage. More running to the LOS to set up. The players were probably tired. It was also the 4th quarter too.

It also seemed to help Riley
It was like he no longer had time to think or rethink the plays – just set and execute… which he did
How can you not love a team that does this?
I’m really excited that we came back to win. In the last several years, Cal has shown very little ability to come back when they are down late. Now I feel — and I hope the team will feel — that this team can come back, and that just because they are down late, doesn’t mean it’s over. Riley isn’t exactly Joe Montana, but I think this was a huge step for the team.
Hey, anyone want to guess the last Cal team to win at least 3 games on the road?
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Well, it could be more recent, but the Citrus Bowl team was 10-2. And one of those losses was at home.
let's not talk about that loss

Yep. disappointing that Cal hasn’t managed to win more than 2 road games at all between ’06 and ’08 — And that ’06 team won 10 games!
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
To be fair, the ’06 team only had 5 road games.

Anybody know why we can’t get a replay of the game on ESPN 360. It says something about being subject to regional blackout. But we got the game on the west coast?
If it’s not working later tonight, it’ll be up by tomorrow morning, don’t worry.

Joe Starkey is horrible.....
the dude can’t pronounce Jahvid’s name correctly. At least ten times he called him the wrong name.
Further, the dude is just senile and has trouble accurately describing the in game action.
Finally, he’s simply a winer.

You and Fire Starkey need to set up a committee
Why were you listening to him when you could watch it on TV?

by Avinash Kunnath on Oct 31, 2009 7:41 PM PDT up reply actions
Because I have this dvice called "delay play" that lets me sync up the radio
to the video on the TV, thereby not having to listen to the almost always awful TV announcers. Best invention ever, except when you have Joe Starkey calling games. The dude, is really watching a different game than anyone else.

Oooh that’s a nice get. I’d like one of those for the usually putrid NFL/NBA announcers.

Yeah, $200 (a little price), but for someone who watches sports as much as I do
and for someone as critical of awful announcers as I am, it was well worth the money.
I used to have to suffer through horrible TV guys, but now I get to really see what Starkey is not made of.

Seems like if you have a radio and Tivo you could do the same thing. Or is the radio broadcast generally ahead of the TV broadcast?

I would agree that Joe Starkey has his faults. But he is nonetheless our guy, and I will always love him simply for that. And all you need to do is spend five minutes listening to the USC or UCLA announcers to realize that Joe is, at worst, par for the course. The Trojans’ Pete Arbogast, in particular, is the single most pompous and obnoxious play-by-play man to whom I’ve ever had the displeasure of listening.
Starkey’s call of The Play is a classic, not so much because it was technically great, or even good—he never did say the word “lateral”!—but because he effectively communicated both the passion and the chaos that the moment embodied. For comparison, much the same could probably be said about Russ Hodges’s classic “The Giants Win the Pennant!” call from Bobby Thompson’s 1951 game-winner.

Agreed
Last week, when I had to choose between broadcasts, my head said to go with the Berkeley one, but my heart eventually convinced me to go with Joe. I may have no freaking clue as to what’s going on, but he still does a better job of putting me right into Memorial stadium on game day.

Look...
To me, Joe is Cal. His voice reminds me of autumn days walking through Sproul. Going to football games when we were not very good, the stadium had more seats than fans, and you still went because you loved your school. He loves Cal and yeah, he’s got flaws. But I even like the flaws. It’s the flavor of college football.
On a side note, when Joe lost his wife a few years ago, I sent him a note of condolences. I received a VERY nice note back from him, and it wasn’t some pro forma note. I always appreciated that because he didn’t have to do it.

The Future...
Watching the Oregon/USC game, I’m more and more convinced that Oregon’s offense and play calling is how you win in the Pac 10 for the future. Tedford has dabbled with spread elements, but we’ve never really given it a lot of time or commitment (I think Dunbar was a spread OC, but he also may be a mediocre spread OC). What do you think? Should we add more spread (or even commit to the spread), or remain in mostly a multiple pro set?
+1
Oregon’s offense, when clicking, is almost unstoppable.
by 33SwisherSweet on Nov 1, 2009 7:12 AM PDT up reply actions
It seriously doesn’t look like the same Oregon play. As T-Bred says, much improved blocking by the O-line, and Masoli has really learned how to throw consistently, making the Ducks doubly dangerous.
Despite their absolute offensive ineptitude back in August, the Ducks still had several chances to get back into that game late. 19-8 is hardly a blowout.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Same thing that happened when we shut them down last year.....
For whatever reason, it takes UofO a few games to get clicking on all cylinders. Once they do, watch out.

Ok, just got back to my computer. Yesterday was fun, but it was also insane. At the bar we’re watching it at theres this dude sitting in front of us. Perched up on a stool there at the bar. Watching the game in such a way that if you wanted to watch the TV, seeing his brutally exposed plumber’s crack is unavoidable. It was so disastrously bad. What could we say????
At one point, he turned around and asked us if we could see everything OK. I wanted to say ’Unfortunately, yes. Yes, we can." OMG QUE DISASTERIDAD!
That was the worst part to that game, by far!

I had a rather important moment in my emotional maturation yesterday. For the first time ever, I had to urinate in public. My wife and I were heading into the City for some Halloween fun and it was so bad, we had to get off the BART about 4 stops early. I hustle up stairs to the surface, but find myself in the Financial District at 7 PM on a Saturday. NOTHING is open. I frantically run around for a little while before finding a series of bushes outside some bank. I had all my “Uromeisotis” and “My dad was in a Red Army Camp” rebuttals ready to go, but fortunately I never needed to use them.
I feel like I just broke my warranty or something.

3) warranty?

While I am in Columbus, Ohio, I’m also about to rule all over your peeing-in-public keester. Dear Twist: please keep your salami in the meat drawer when in public.
