I hate hope. Good thing we don't have it!
We might win the Big Game this year! Might.

it's sad
because that kid has got talent. This loss will set his Heisman campaign back. I hope they can shrug this one off and get that kid a shot at the Heisman

That one sucked. Did they really think Best wasn’t going to carry it?

No. That’s in two weeks when Cal spanks the Bruins.

Before you start trash talking...
I want to see if Cal can score a touchdown against the Bruins.
It will be four weeks since the Bears smelled the end zone by then.
One thing that's been established
Cal is a mediocre team. Or so we can hope.
We’ll be playing for a low-level bowl and a victory in the Big Game.
I hate these fucken fluff stories
Troy will fall...AGAIN!
Jesus Christ, I'm Sick Of It!
Decker, Masoli, Johnson…anyone else going to vindicate themselves against Cal???
i hope not
hopefully, kevin prince is the starter by the time the bears come to town.
Best shouldn't be in the game now
It’s over. Don’t get him hurt.
I always hated the yellow tops
Now let’s ban them.
So much for SC being vulnerable
They got their shitty loss out of the way, and will go undefeated the rest of the way.
No. USC will lose to Oregon, and they’ll struggle to beat Stanford. I’d like to say the Bears just got steamrolled at home by the top team in the conference, but the Trojans will do well to go to the Holiday Bowl. As for our Bears, I’m afraid ANY bowl would be a good accomplishment.
Go Bears!

Bad quarterback play
It’s not a coincidence that Cal hasn’t been an elite team since the team’s last elite quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, left.
One way or another, that has to change.
Looks like the season is over
Right now I’d be happy just to get a Big Game win.
We should replace Riley and start thinking about next year.
I’m down on Riley, too, and I’ve never been a big fan. But “thinking about next year” might mean sticking with him; he does have a year of eligibility left.
Go Bears!

He’s had 3+ years in the system, and hasn’t been able to overcome his accuracy problems. I don’t know if he’s the QB we want next year.
Oregon and USC are a lot better
I think it’s that simple.
Blockers not executing
Riley overthrowing
Receivers not coming up with catches
and defense forced into being on the field too long as a result of poor offensive play
Where's your evidence of this?
I haven’t seen it.
Not really
Cal could lose every game during the rest of the season, which won’t happen, and his job would be safe. You don’t fire the guy who brought the program back to respectability, and is graduating his players, because of one horrible season.
And there’s still a chance the season will be okay. We got a reality check. Cal isn’t that good.
Looks like ABC made the right call
going with Miami-Oklahoma, a nail-biter between good teams. This game was a bore.
i still can’t get over that riley overthrow to vereen when he was wide fucking open. just about sums up how “improved” he is from last season
i'm here to clean your pool but i don't have a pool *bowchica bowow*
I have to admit
That throw bothered me. I don’t like assigning too much blame to quarterbacks, and don’t know that a green Sweeney would be any better, but that bugged me because it’s so typical. I just don’t have confidence in Riley, and I don’t think Tedford does either – or he wouldn’t have kicked field goals at the half and with the game still theoretically in reach.
The sign of desperation for me was the 3rd-quarter series of direct snaps to the tailback. Total lack of confidence not just in the quarterback but in the line’s ability to create running room from a conventional set. Very disturbing to me.
Go Bears!
by California Pete on Oct 3, 2009 8:28 PM PDT up reply actions
That bothered me, too. So our response to the adversity was to essentially go to a 10-man offensive set? Maybe a Hydro Tech film breakdown would prove me wrong, but it really seemed like we were clueless on offense for much of the game. No continuity, no logic to some of the playcalling. Very disturbing.
Praise be to Tedford!
Anyone watching on espn360.com?
Mikes were still on after they signed off.
Ron Franklin: “Whooo.”

It's On Riley
He got sacked a couple of times, but he had time to throw in general. He had open receivers most of the time and just couldn’t hit them. Didn’t see as many drops this time.
Just exaggerating about Tedford warm seat
His job is still safe for a couple of years, but we will see what he is made of. He’s facing a situation which he has faced before (2007 year), so we can see if he’s truly evolved as a head coach.
It's better that this is happening earlier
The team rose to unrealistic heights in 2007, based in part on a very lucky play in Oregon. And then everything unraveled.
Now it’s back to basics. You’ve got a bye, a chance to accept the fact that no one’s going to any Rose Bowls or winning any Heismans. Cal is a middle-of-the-pack team that could do better if the right decisions are made and the players can get their act together.
Most welcome bye week ever
My guess is we’re looking at Fall camp #2 and every spot on the depth chart is up for grabs. We can only hope that whoever emerges from this competition will come out with pride and purpose against the Bruins. Winning for the first time in L.A. during the Tedford era would be a significant accomplishment this year.
Go Bears!
A few notes.
- Fire Andy Ludwig, for uncreative and stupid playcalling. Even when we had blowout wins I was not impressed with the offensive playcalling.
- We were just super-overrated. We’re probably 5th or 6th team in Pac-10 at best.
- I am going extreme to actually start thinking Jahvid’s overrated, too. He’s a great back, but not legendary enough to be a Heisman candidate.
- Let’s just spend the rest of season to give our frosh QBs experience for next year. Riley’s overthrowing pretty much every ball (the reason why I think he doesn’t have many INTs).
- Still, go bears.
On the bright side
Basketball season starts in a little over a month. Practice starts in less than 2 weeks. Monty’s boys could be pretty good. I’m not buying into all the Pac-10 championship talk, but I believe we’ll be dancin’ in March.
Forgive me, I’m desperate for positive thoughts right now .
Praise be to Tedford!
Oregon 45, WSU 6 in the 3rd Q
Even WSU scored a TD (missed PAT) against Oregon.
FML.
Praise be to Tedford!
Another bonus
Tickets shouldn’t be quite so hard to come by.
Most depressing thought of the year
Joe Ayoob vs. Matt Leinart was a closer contest than tonight.
Go Bears!
This game wasn't on playcalling
USC was more conservative than we were. Their QB was able to hit receivers and their line opened holes for their RBs. We actually tried to mix it up with reverses. The Wildcat was definitely overused, though.
Thinking rationally, or trying
The disappointment I’m feeling isn’t that we lost to Oregon at Eugene or to USC anywhere. That usually happens, and it’s not a shock.
What’s disappointing is the team’s inability to compete.
I don’t think Cal is as bad as we’ve looked during the past two weeks. But there’s something lacking in this team.
Yeah, if you’d have told me before season started, we’d be 3-2, with losses at UO and home to SC, it wouldn’t have surprised me. I would’ve thought that sucked, but I would’ve been encouraged by the fact that we TCB’d at Minnesota. But the WAY we’ve lost the last two is very disconcerting. The utter lack of competitiveness in these two games is mind numbing. These last 2 weeks, we’ve been slower, less physical, and less passionate than our opponent. Not to mention less able to execute. Please don’t be another 2007. We have to regroup. I’d like to say we’re better than this, but now I’m not sure.
Praise be to Tedford!
The win at Minn. really gave me hope
that this would be different. We came through in the clutch on the road. But now it looks totally out of character.
Just got back from the game. Fans were booing Tedford’s playcalling (punting on 4th and 1 and the field goal). Some fans (dicks) were booing Riley on some of his throws. Not a fun game by any measure. Thank goodness the next home game is WSU.
Does Riley get CHEERS when he plays well?
SHOULDN’T he get boos when he plays badly?
Or, is this just a ass kissing audience?
Just remember these are 18-23 year old kids. Just because they deserve the boos doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do. Booing will NOT help the team play better.
I know
So far his failed QBs (Ayoob, Longshore, Riley) at Cal outnumber his good ones (Boller, Rodgers).
Even So
Lonshore regressed and Riley appears to be doing the same. At least he has shown no improvement. Yes, he has faced some good D’s these last two games, but he had some guys open for easy pitch and catches and couldn’t do it. Not sure how much Tedford is involved with the QBs these days, but he definitely lost faith in Riley today.
BTW
“College kids” who play football are given the chance of a lifetime. If they deserve the accolades they surely deserve the blame. Even if it means that they hear about the fan’s displeasure. Riley was highly thought of out of high school. He was given multiple opportunities to succeed. He seems unable to for whatever reason. The fans have a perfect right to vent their frustration of players who don’t play well just as much as the accolades for those who do.
And I don't
College kids shouldn’t be booed by their home fans. Sure, they get a free scholarship, but they also get the lovely opportunity to have lifelong damage inflicted on their bodies.
If Riley was a professional athlete, I would agree wholeheartedly. But he’s not. So I don’t.
Besides, it’s not constructive anyway, and certainly isn’t going to encourage QB prospects to come to Berkeley.
I should clarify… I don’t condone booing at the game in the stands, in the quad, heckling at the mall, etc, but I do think a fair amount of criticism is allowed for paid representation and faculty, or players who conciously neglect to give their full effort. I didn’t see any Bear not trying to do what he could out there tonight.
Duck fan here.......if you don't hate Ludwig already you will by the end of the season
The worst offensive coordinator Oregon has had in the last 20 years
I haven’t been crazy about the game plan the last two weeks (What Cal fan would?), specifically it’s lack of stubbornness with the run. But I’m not willing to pin this on Ludwig, at least not yet.
As bad as the Bears have looked the last two weeks, they were very dynamic the first three—even with a string of poor possessions that let Minnesota back in the game. A lot of plays have been there, but the players simply haven’t been executing. Before I personally go blaming Ludwig, I blame the O-line and Riley’s inaccuracy as the chief problems.
Go Bears!

OK, Ladies and Gents
It’s after midnight here in Jersey and I’m hitting the sack. Was a pleasure commiserating with all you and it was a remarkably civil thread considering we got thrashed yet again. Still, I’m a Cal fan through and through and will be wearing my Golden Bears hat tomorrow with pride. We’ve been through tough times before and we endured. We will endure again. Goodnight and
GO BEARS!
I also am out
