Darian Hagan has been suspended for a game
Lots of big news from practice tonight. After missing a class, Hagan will miss the ASU game. Josh Hill will start in his place. Derrick Hill and Matt Summers-Gavin will also miss the trip with injuries. Mark Boskovich and Richard Fisher will replace MSG. Lastly, Cattouse has replaced Ezeff as a starting safety.

I am officially worried. I’d like to change my prediction from the podcast now…
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Nah, I wouldn’t go that far yet. I dunno if we’ll be seeing a lot of the 4 DL if DHill’s out… but who knows?
GO BEARS!

I was pretty confident until I read this report.
While Hagan has been in and out, his depth is still important. And, MSG not being healthy definitely hurts.
More than anything though is the loss of Hill. Do we know whether Payne is back?
Again, i still think Cal wins, just a lot more talent, but this could get ugly.
Oh, and one more point on Hagan. I am going to go out on a limb and say that thus far in his collegiate career, he has been a disappointment. A mild one, but a disappointment from what I expected, and probably from what he expected too.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
Payne’s supposed to be back

From what we’ve heard so far, Hill and MSG out is not unexpected.
“A” class for Hagan. Unless Hagan was already missing too many, I don’t see how one class would get you suspended.
Yeah…
Good thing ASU’s banged up too… I guess

You know after laying the boom on ucla, I was thinking we were kind of like Notre Dame inat:LKDFJ:SDIOL
Sorry, I just passed out from typing that.
What I meant to say is that I thought that much like a certain Catholic university that is not Georgetown or BC, our only eminently winnable game on the schedule was Wash St. But I think this team still has a lot to show us, Ross and Cattouse especially
How would they even know if you missed one class? Do they keep that tight of a leash on players?

I can assure everybody that the coaches monitor attendance. JT has a system setup where student-athletes are put into various categories depending on their academic standing. Those that are struggling are monitored more closely and checked up on more frequently. How soon we forget that Hagan sat out all of Spring Ball ’09 to focus in on his academics. Given the 1 game suspension levied on Hagan, it should be pretty apparent that JT is serious about the classroom.
Yeah, I feel that’s why he was suspended — he’s been punished for it before and still went against team rules

I think Robert Marve was held out of the Emerald Bowl for being late.
Realistically missing a class is not a big deal but it’s kind of indicative of a lack of discipline that a lot of coaches, Tedford included, aren’t going to allow.

Every so often there are anecdotes of a dude like Follett not being the most studious and attentive of class attendees, but I think that’s unfair ’cause maybe the class just sucked?

I think the NCAA (or schools, not sure which is responsible for the rule in this case) is wayyyyy too strict on their student athletes over minor crap. Missing a class? That’s a big deal? Really? I understand it to a degree cause they’re trying to graduate kids at a high rate, so it makes sense to keep an eye on them and make sure they generally attend class….but missing one class is a suspension? Man, I went to a small private school where every professor I ever had knew my name by Week 2 (assuming I went to classes in the first two weeks!), and I missed a ton of class. It’s really just not a big deal…
At first thought, I would agree. But after more thought, I disagree.
First off, the coaches set these rules. Sure missing one class sounds harsh. But what’s the alternative? Saying that players can miss 10 classes per semester? If that’s the case, then the players can start cutting class since they know they have 10 absence leeway. By giving a little, you’re allowing the players to manipulate the system. That isn’t permissible, especially when under Jeff Tedford, the student-athletes are students first. The Cal Football players are here from school first, and football second (although the players may not see it the same way).
Also, these players aren’t just regular students such as yourself. They are public icons. Some are even famous. They can’t be seen skipping class or not attending class. Word will get out. It has before, and it always will. The program has an image to uphold.
This is a big deal.

I do think there has to be some leeway though, even for athletes. Part of college is learning how to decide what one needs to do and what one doesn’t necessarily have to go to. Most professors that I have had really don’t care all that much about attendance, unless it is a discussion based class (which it could have been for all I know, I’m just making a general point here). Many of them, for example, are webcasted. I hardly ever go to those classes, it’s just much easier to watch them from the comfort of your own room (in PJs, of course). There are other times when I have other things going on in my life that may require me to miss a class and so I have to make that choice. Part of college is learning how to make these choices for yourself without someone holding your hand. I feel that having coaches suspend players for missing one class takes away from that.

As I said, I went to a small college, small classes and what not and professors kept attendance and everything. We had rules like that. In my school in the college we had to attend at least 75% of the classes to pass. Some professors had their own rules, some would start penalizing your grade after 3 missed classes or so. It really doesn’t seem overly ridiculous to me to have some sort of leniency, especially for students who are doing well. I don’t see why it would be that hard to give them a little leeway – these are adults, after all, legally capable of making their own decisions – and rewarding ones that do well with extra leniency. Especially with all the extra study time/tudor services that are both available and required…
The bottom line is they’re supposed to be student-athletes, and as far as the “student” part of that equation goes, I don’t see why they should be treated any differently than other students.

I agree with your points, but I still feel for them… mainly because I (and I would think most of the student body) skipped class a ton. Hagan did have to miss some practices over the summer because of academic issues, so this is nothing new for him — that’s why this suspension isn’t out of the blue

This is the bargain athletes make:
Since they don’t have to pay for college, they have to attend their classes. Seems reasonable.

Well, then you’re opening up a whole new argument where they’re (referring stricly to football/basketball players since those are the big revenue sports) being completely screwed over…

Possibly. I’d like to see that discussion at some point.

Didn’t we have that discussion a few months ago?
(Also, I’m not aware of other scholarship students having these same attendance requirements)
by Missing Barry on Oct 30, 2009 11:35 AM PDT up reply actions
No, they have GPA requirements, though.
I’m not in on the details, but I get the sense that the ‘no missing class’ requirements are there only for players who have yet to prove that they can handle their academics without oversight. I believe this category includes all freshmen, btw.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
There was an old newspaper article a long time ago regarding Desean Jackson missing a class. I guess it was his freshman year. He skipped one class. And he said by the time the afternoon came around for practice, all the coaches already knew he had skipped, and his mom already knew too (presumably the coach(es) informed his mother).

Damn
If I were on the football team, I’d be suspended every game.
