USC or Oregon? Who should Cal root for?
After watching our victory over ASU this Saturday, I will be leaving ABC on for the ESPN game of the week: USC/Oregon. But besides rooting for some freak all-out stadium brawl that disqualifies both teams from the BCS forever, what is the best possible outcome for the Cal fan? Should we root for USC or Oregon?
Here are some things to consider:
(1) USC needs to lose twice in order for Cal to jump them in the conference race. Oregon needs to lose three times. Since it is somewhat more feasible to think that USC will lose one more game than Oregon to lose two more games, the advantage here goes towards rooting for Oregon. That is, if Oregon beats USC, and USC then loses one more game while Cal wins out, then Cal may take 2nd in the conference (Holiday Bowl, sigh).
Message: Root for Oregon
(2) BUT, both USC and Oregon have a few more difficult games on their schedule (as does Cal). Oregon's end of the season schedule includes Stanford, Arizona, AND Oregon State. Stanford and Arizona, moreover, are away games for the Ducks. USC finishes the season with only tough games against Arizona and Stanford. And both of those are at home. USC's end of the season is significantly easier than Oregon's.
Message: Root for USC
(3) Of course, both of these scenarios revolve around rooting for Cal to take 2nd place. If you still believe in a Rose Bowl berth, THEN the most feasible situation I can imagine is Oregon beating USC, then losing those tough away games plus Oregon State, while USC loses to Arizona.
Message: Root for Oregon
So to my mind Oregon would be the better choice. Plus, I think USC, not Oregon, is a bigger recruit competitor for Cal. Plus, I hate USC with a passion, and I'm kind of ambivalent about Oregon. Who are you going to root for?
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

Rooting for an all-out freak-out balls-out brawl that leads to a) the suspension of both teams from qualifying for any bowls this season plus 2) a retroactive vacating of all wins. A brawl so powerful, it sucks Texas in its wake, ripping the fabric of time and and throwing Mack Brown into the stone ages.
Barring that… rooting for USC.

I’ve always liked Oregon. I’ll be rooting hard for them. Plus, if Oregon wins, it will essentially knock USC out of the Rose Bowl and put them into another BCS bowl. I’d love to see USC take on someone like Texas, Alabama, or Florida in a BCS bowl. I’m tired of seeing them beating up some crappy Big Televen team every year.

This assumes the P-X is getting 2 teams in the BCS, I don’t think that is a foregone conclusion. Oregon is now Rose Bowl bound, but they have only a minuscule chance of the NC game. So, unless there is a lot of losing at the top, and its clear the football gods favor Iowa, I’m not sure a 10th place finish by SC is going to cut it for the BCS.
Question: Does the BCS prevent two non-AQ schools from getting bids? Might this be the year the Rose Bowl chooses to take one of those?
by YleeXOtee on Nov 1, 2009 8:17 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
agreed. There are too many no-loss (or one-loss) good teams this year for the Pac-10 to get 2 teams in. Oregon takes rose bowl. Cal has to win out and USC lose one to get second place. Most probably, Cal is looking at 3-5th place finish.

You seem to be under the mistaken notion that BCS bowls invite teams based on merit or some similar qualification. They don’t.
USC will get a bowl berth—most likely the Fiesta Bowl, because USC brings ratings, a big crowd, and lots of tourism, same as Ohio State did last year. The second ranked non BCS team will not get a BCS bowl berth because that team won’t bring any of those things.
Might this be the year the Rose Bowl chooses to take one of those?
Particular gibberish. The Rose Bowl can’t take a team from any other conference unless the Pac-10 or Baker’s 10 champ goes to the NCG. There are contracts, and such.

There's only one reason I'm voting for USC
And it has nothing to do with the Rose Bowl, which is a near impossibility.
Take a look at the recruits at the game:
Lache Seastrunk, RB
Owamagbe (Owa) Odighizuwa, DE
Gabe King, DE
Think Oregon beating USC and running to the BCS might convince those 5 star recruits that this is the best place to win a national title? Add in those plum facilities in Eugene, the anger of Cal fans at Tedford’s inabilities if Kelly could get the job done IN ONE YEAR, and Oregon and USC could be spending the next decade battling each other, leaving Cal in the dust for some time.
People might think I’m exaggerating, but it only takes small events like this to change the dynamics of the Pac-10.

I agree with this assessment. We got hurt bad in terms of recruiting during the USC game. If Oregon can show off even a little more fight than we do, we lose a lot of credibility with these recruits.

Seriously, if I were a 5-star recruit I wouldn’t care about facilities or titles or the BCS or NFl drafts… I would care about one thing and one thing alone… what team has an enthusiastic coach with seemingly no other job other than swinging a thick rope around his head? That’s where I want to play…
Maybe that’s why I wasn’t a 5-star recruit you say? Bullox

Also, Dontae Williams will be there, as well as a few unofficial from a few probable 2011 4* players.

Keeping in mind that I know nothing about recruiting…
It seems to me that the USC-Oregon game would be significantly less important for Cal’s recruiting than the Cal-Oregon game.
If a recruit was choosing between the Bears and the Ducks purely on this season’s results, that ship has already sailed and we may as well root for what will help Cal this year. Or which team you personally prefer.

Yea... ambivalence vs. hatred
I’ve given up hope for #1 in the Pac-10 this year, so I’ll take a 2008 election stance on this one and say, ANYONE BUT U$C!!!
Sure we’ll have to deal with UO fans clamoring for awhile about how they are the cream of the crop til we shellack them next year in Berkeley, but it beats U$C in the Rose Bowl AGAIN for several reasons:
Watching U$C in the Rose Bowl this year (i.e. my sanity), more boosting of U$C fans’ prides, the further entrenching of the Pac-10 into the Pac-1 nonsense in the media, and of course the Pac-10 not getting two BCS teams (I mean seriously, if U$C finishes 10-2, do we really think the BCS won’t take them as an at-large team?)
UO is at least fun to watch when they aren’t playing Cal, U$C is just miserable…

I hate Oregon’s fans, but respect the program. Their staff isn’t full of shameless self-promoters, for the most part I have always liked their players, and their style of football is fun to watch.
On the other hand, their fans are pretty terrible, specifically the students and young alumni (in contrast to our fans, where the ratio of terrible-ness seems to correlate with proximity to death. An encouraging sign for the 2030 season!) It seems like each time they come down here there’s a band of 50 punks roaming around Berkeley trying to start fights, swearing in front of kids and old people, and generally conducting themselves like idiots.
I hate SC’s program and their fans, who aren’t really fans.
It’d be nice to see two pac-10 teams play in the BCS, and to see a different team win a share of the conference title. Go ducks?

Easy – root for the scenario that puts USC in a non-Rose Bowl BCS game (because I want to see them put the smack down on the SEC and shut those little shits up), puts Oregon in the Rose Bowl, and Cal in the Holiday bowl. SoCal, you’re thinking about it like the recent years where it has been a non-USC team that has been trying to get an at-large berth. I think everyone concedes that USC has a much more powerful draw as a at-large BCS team than everyone else.
In fact, wasn’t it in 2002 when WSU went to the Rose Bowl that USC ended up in the Orange?

Root for the Trojans
I want SC to win out— hopefully they go to the national championship game— Oregon to lose another game in November, and Cal to finish tied 2nd. If Cal wins out, I believe we’ll be ranked 14th or better in the BCS, in which case we will at least be in consideration for an at-large bid for the BCS. If the Pac-10 doesn’t get two BCS bids, then there’s a probability that the Holiday Bowl might go ahead and choose the team that has won seven straight, ranked higher in the BCS, and the team that didn’t play in the HB the previous season.

I’m pretty sure ALL of the Pac-10 bowls besides the Rose have a no-repeat clause.
However, it’s important to remember that’s an OPTION for the bowl to consider. They can take the same team multiple times if they want to. All the no-repeat clause does is allow them to pick someone lower on the list than they’re supposed to be allowed to.
However, what is also overlooked in this discussion is that there are no tie-breakers for the bowls (except the Rose). For the rest, if two teams have the same conference record, the bowl gets their choice even if they lost the head to head.
by kencraw on Oct 31, 2009 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
i was under the assumption
that “head-to-head” is used by the Pac-10 only in the selection of the automatic Rose Bowl qualifier to represent the conference. The rest of the bowls, including a possible at-large selection for the Rose Bowl, is wholly independent from head-to-head in-conference determinations so the Holiday Bowl, for example, could select any bowl-eligible Pac-10 team; last year was a good example of 4th place Las Vegas Bowl “trading down” to 5th place Emerald Bowl for the rights to 5th place Arizona so that the Emerald could get 4th place California. (I know Sun Bowl has provisions that prevent a return trip on consecutive years, but unsure of the HB.)

Cal Football: It could happen!
by CalBandGreat on Oct 28, 2009 6:30 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Possibilities
Ideal scenario: Cal wins out, finishes in the Top 14 and is offered an at-large berth to the Rose Bowl thanks to the Pac-10 champion heading to the MNC game.
Analysis: This scenario is totally dependent on Cal winning out. I can’t say just how likely that is yet, but I think 5-0/4-1 are the two most likely remaining possibilities. On the other hand, I think both Oregon and USC have equally strong shots at the MNC. And this is where it gets interesting. I don’t think there’s a BCS bowl in the country that wouldn’t leap at the chance to take a 10-2 USC at-large….except the Rose Bowl. Given that they’ve played three RBs in a row and seem a tad ungrateful at the chance to do it again, if there is an eligible Cal team, given its history, I believe the RB committee would select a 10-2 Cal over a 10-2 USC. Likewise, I think every BCS bowl except the Rose would prefer Oregon to Cal if both finished 10-2. Thus, if we could be certain that the PX champion would make the MNC game, it’s basically flip a coin and hope Cal wins out. That’s about as ass-backward a way to get in as there is, but better lucky than good.
Verdict: Root for whichever team you prefer and hope like hell Cal and that team win out.
Acceptable scenario: Cal goes 4-1 down the stretch, finishes third in the conference. PX champ is 11-1, runner-up 10-2, and two potential BCS teams in Oregon and USC.
Analysis: If Cal does not win out, then I think it matters who wins this game much more. A 10-2 USC team is much more attractive than a 10-2 Oregon for at-large purposes. Cal goes to the Holiday Bowl again, but rides their momentum to a 10 win season, not unlike Oregon 2008.
Verdict: Root for Oregon to win, as that will increase the chances of two PX teams earning a BCS berth.
Possibilities beyond that do not bear thinking about as it would mean Cal has two or more losses.

Ideal scenario:
All BCS teams have three losses each. Boise State and TCU each lose two games. Cal wins the rest of their games and goes to the BCS NC Game

This thread is so bad if I were to criticize it I would have to fall back on a dialect only spoken in webcomics. Most likely Achewood or Scarygoround. This thread makes me sad.

I’m an Oregon alum. I root for Oregon.
Oh, and I was raised by Cal alums. I hate U$C.

We're not all thugs
or assholes or some intertwined combination of the both. In fact to say that about most schools that is a pretty dumb blanket statement. there are 60 thousand Oregon fans in Autzen on a given night and 4 people give you shit and you generalize us all as such? seems kind of like an unfair assessment.

I’m not sure who you are responding to, duckyou, but I see only two or three comments out of 95 that are negative toward Duck fans, while the majority of posters seem to be rooting for the Ducks. That seems like a pretty darn good ratio to me, on an opposing team’s blog. Relax and enjoy!
