Holy perspective Batman! First Half D vs. Second Half D.
Numbers carefully and lovingly culled to be submitted without comment. Topic is self explanatory:
Maryland, first half: 126 yards on 44 plays
Maryland, second half: 142 yards on 31 plays
Eastern Washington, first half: 169 yards on 42 plays
Eastern Washington, second half: 65 yards on 24 plays
Minnesota, first half: 91 yards on 22 plays
Minnesota, second half: 163 yards on 30 plays
Oregon, first half: 299 yards on 41 plays
Oregon, second half: 225 yards on 53 plays
USC, first half: 261 yards on 41 plays
USC, second half: 170 yards on 33 plays
UCLA, first half: 299 yards on 30 plays
UCLA, second half: 166 yards on 35 plays
Wazzu, first half: 290 yards on 40 plays
Wazzu, second half: 131 yards on 33 plays.
Numbers are slightly, but not emphatically SIC. Best way I could figure out to come up with the data was to just trawl the espn play by play, but they are treacherous and sometimes lie. But I think the general point, whatever that is, still comes across.

My basic thought process here:
1. Provide statistics people to discuss.
2. Allow people to draw their own conclusions.
3. ?

I would be stunned if Avinash was genuinely attempting to belittle your fanpost here. It is not like him to do that. That’s something I’m much more likely to do. As such:

yards per play
Maryland 1st half: 2.86
Maryland 2nd half: 4.58
EWU 1st half: 7.68
EWU 2nd half: 2.71
Minn 1st half: 4.14
Minn 2nd half: 5.43
Ore 1st half: 7.29
Ore 2nd half: 4.25
USC 1st half: 6.37
USC 2nd half: 5.15
UCLA 1st half: 9.97
UCLA 2nd half: 4.74
WSU 1st half: 7.25
WSU 2nd half: 3.97

This year’s median of yards allowed per play is 5.3 yards. The range of yards allowed per play is from 3.6 yards to 7.3 yards. If we use that a measuring stick then here is how Cal’s D fared against the opponents:
Maryland 1st half: dominated like no other
Maryland 2nd half: above average
EWU 1st half: HORRIBLE
EWU 2nd half: COMPLETE DOMINATION!!!
Minn 1st half: above average
Minn 2nd half: average
Ore 1st half: HORRIBLE
Ore 2nd half: very good
USC 1st half: HORRIBLE
USC 2nd half: average
UCLA 1st half: EVEN WORSE THAN THE OREGON GAME!
UCLA 2nd half: above average
WSU 1st half: HORRIBLE
WSU 2nd half: EXCELLENT
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
The Ore and USc games were (pretty much) over at half. I know the USC game featured USC just eating clock in the 2nd half. I suppose similar-ish comments could be said about Cal’s W’s since they, too, were trying to kill the clock in many of these games but they can’t really do that because they score like mad yo or punt it.

These statistics show that Gregory has had quite a few bad halves of football (statistically speaking). Namely, WSU 1st half, UCLA 1st half, Oregon 1st half, and EWU first half. That’s four really bad halves of football out of fourteen halves (4/14=28.57%). In other words, one out of every four halves of Cal Football defense has been pretty bad.
On the other hand, Cal has had some great halves of defensive football (statistically speaking). Namely, Maryland 1st half, Maryland 2nd half, EWU 2nd half, Minnesota 1st half, Oregon 2nd half, UCLA 2nd half, and WSU 2nd half. That’s seven halves of football out of fourteen halves (7/14=50%). In other words, one out of every two halves of Cal Football defense has been pretty good.
Combining all these statistics, it appears that 25% of the time we can expect some bad defensive football, 50% of the time we can expect some great defensive football, and 25% of the time we can expect some average defensive football.

I think that correlates with my general observation.

Like Carp said…I think the Oregon and USC are a function of the game already being over at halftime and opponents eating clock. The EWU/UCLA/WSU games could be the opposite – because we were up so much, they were forced to play more aggressively (sorry Hydro, I know you hate that word) and because it didn’t work our D looks better statistically.
dboneisloose
were forced to play more aggressively (sorry Hydro, I know you hate that word)
Well, if Hydro’s thoughts on aggressiveness are anything like mine (which I think they are), it’s not so much the word aggressive, which has actual meaning like long passes, more blitzes, etc. – it’s the fact that people use aggressive in place of good, like somehow simply being more aggressive will lead to more success (the opposite is usually true). When the offense isn’t working, it’s not being aggressive enough. When the defense isn’t working, it’s just being too conservative and not aggressive enough, like that magically will fix the actual problems….
So yeah, I think your use is actually good, because you’re theory leads to the aggressive mentality actually being bad, which it usually is!

People see being “aggressive” as the cure-all for any problem. It’s not that simple.

Well, you could have just said “they had to pass more.”

The really bad/annoying/frustrating thing about this is how inconsistent it all seems. Some games the defense stats are about equal between halves, some have a stinky first half, others have a horrid second half.
Not sure what that indicates. It would seem safe to assume that a bad first half and a good second half means the defense made the right adjustments. Conversely, a good first half and bad second points to the other team making good adjustments.
In any case, I don’t think the solution is to increase aggression (how is that Rage virus research coming, anyway?), but for better in-game management and adjustments by the defensive coaches. Which has been the thorn in my butt for the whole year, because I honestly don’t see that happening at all so far.

others have a horrid second half.
I wouldn’t say that. I think it’s pretty safe to say that either the Cal D put up numbers that stand on their own merits in the second half, or they put up numbers that improved on the first half.

Minnesota, first half: 91 yards on 22 plays
Minnesota, second half: 163 yards on 30 plays
1st half: 4.1 ypp
2nd half: 5.4 ypp
That seems to be much worse. But maybe I am just picking nits

Yeah, but those are pretty good stats regardless. If our total defense averaged out to 160 yards per half we’d all be deliriously happy with it. Not so much with the ypp, though.

Can someone clarify what the verdict is here
Based on the stats above, this all seems very inconclusive…

It’s neither conclusive nor inconclusive! It’s just stats, there’s no hypothesis here. I was just trying to spur a rad conversation of how our defense maybe might be kinda OK in the second half and why that might be true in the second half but not the first. I am “contributing to the discourse.”

OK thanks for that...
I was just a bit confused at first, but if the “conclusion” is we are inconsistent on defense, then yes I’d have to agree… I thought you were making a bold statement about us being either better in the first or the second half with stats that were all over the place.
I’d like to mix and match personally, a little 1st half MD mixed with a little EWU/Wazzu 2nd half, a dash of Rope Guy here and wallah you have the 2009 Hit Squad…
Plus we are all in agreement that this is ALL Hagan’s fault right? I mean why the hell can’t this guy pressure the QB and pick the ball 3x per game, at the same time!?!?!? You’re killing me Smalls!
