Field hockey beats UC Davis:

DAVIS – Junior Lisa Lohre and redshirt freshman Megan Shimojima scored twice, helping the California field hockey team garner a 5-3 victory at UC Davis to close out the regular season. With the win, Cal improved to 6-10, 4-2 in the NorPac Conference, while the Aggies fell to 3-12, 0-5. Sophomore Erin Magill earned Cal’s other score. In addition, junior Sophie Sproats notched three assists.

UC Davis got on the board early to open the scoring. Lindsey Valadez scored off of a penalty corner in the fourth minute of the match. In the 20th minute, Magill tallied her seventh goal of the season off of a penalty corner, as well. Sproats earned the assist.

The Bears took a 2-1 lead with Lohre’s first goal in the 31st minute. Lohre converted on a penalty corner, as both Sproats and freshman Deanna Kennedy recorded the assists. It was Kennedy’s team-best eighth assist on the campaign. The teams headed into halftime with Cal up, 2-1.

In the 53rd minute, Lohre scored her second goal, which proved to be the gamewinner. Once again, Cal scored off of a penalty corner, and Sproats racked up her third assist. The goal was the third of the season for Lohre.

In the 57th minute, Shimojima got on the board for the first time with her goal, which was assisted by junior Natalie Nurnberg. The assist was the seventh of 2009 for Nurnberg. Shimojima added her second goal of the afternoon, fourth goal of the season in the 65th minute.

For a teenage guy, it was a chance to walk around on hotter than hell days at the end of July, mingling with girls you knew from school and meeting girls you didn’t know who were just visiting the G-Fest. Since it was so freaking hot, it seemed that all were scantily clad. Add to the mix the possibility that many were clandestinely engaging in underage drinking, and it was one big party. A lot of flirtin’ going on.

Senior libero Kristen Kathan led all players with 18 digs and senior middle hitter Mindi Wiley posted seven kills (2e, 16att, .312) to go along with five blocks. Junior setter Carli Lloyd dished out 38 assists and nabbed three kills (0e, 7att, .429). The Sun Devils were paced by junior outside hitter Sarah Reaves, who had 14 kills (7e, 39att, .179) to go with a team-high 13 digs.

After three straight hitting errors put the Bears behind, 11-10, Cutura got a kill out of the back row to pull the third set into its sixth tie at 11-all. Freshman defensive specialist Robin Rostratter came in to serve and forced an overplayed pass, which Lloyd slammed to the ground for Cal’s final lead of the match. The Bears ended up ripping off a 15-2 run to close the match with a 25-13 win in the third set. Rostratter served four straight points before Murrey went back to serve six straight points. The Bears led, 22-13, before Lloyd dumped a pass from Murrey. Freshman middle hitter Tia Gaffen took a quick set from Lloyd and recorded a kill to give the Bears set match point before Cutura flew in from the left side and blasted her 21st kill of the night off Reaves to seal Cal’s 3-0 sweep of the Sun Devils. The Bears put up 15 kills in the final set and attacked at a .314 rate (4e, 35att) but also held the Arizona State attack at bay with a -.056 attack percentage (6k, 8e, 36att).

Men’s soccer loses to SDSU:

BERKELEY – No. 20/25 California lost to San Diego State, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Forward Raymundo Reza scored two first-half goals for the Aztecs, who improved their record to 6-4-4 (3-2-2 Pac-10). The Golden Bears’ record fell to 8-7-0 (2-5-0 Pac-10).

Prior to the match, Cal honored its seniors – forward Jeff Cosgriff, goalkeeper Patrick Fry, defender Imaan Kerchgani, defender Evan Sassano and defender Jacob Wilson – on Senior Day, marking the five Bears’ last regular-sesaon home game.

“All five seniors have been a pleasure to coach and have around this program,” Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. “I’ve been here 10 years; Jacob’s been here with me six. He’s been here with me most of the time I’ve been here, and we’ve had Jeff here only for a year. Everything in between has been great. We’re going to miss all those guys. They’ve done big things for the program and have had big contributions. It’s been a tough season, but they should hold their heads up high. Those seniors were fantastic.”

The Bears, who have been plagued by injuries the last few weeks, have lost four straight and five of its last six games.

Cal had the edge on possession for most of the first half and at one point took a 5-0 advantage on shots over San Diego State. Its three shots on goal during that stretch were junior midfielder Hector Jimenez’s effort in the 10th minute blocked by a defender, a Cosgriff shot cleared off the goalline by a San Diego State player in the 11th minute and junior forward Andrew Wiedeman’s close-range, 20th-minute shot that caromed off an Aztecs’ goalpost.

Men’s water polo beats Pepperdine:

The No. 2-ranked Cal men’s water polo team (14-4, 2-1) was able to break away from a 6-5 deficit by scoring eight of the matches’ next nine goals on the way to a 13-7 victory over No. 5-ranked Pepperdine (7-9, 1-3) in an MPSF match Saturday morning at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears were led by sophomore Luka Saponjic’s three goals and 11 saves from sophomore goalie Wil Toppen. Senior captains Spencer Warden and Mike Sample, and junior Brian Dudley added two goals apiece.

The match was nip and tuck in the first half as the two teams traded goals through the first and second periods. Dudley closed the first quarter with a goal with seven seconds left in the period, and freshman Spencer White closed the first half with a last second goal on a counterattack to make the contest, 5-5, at the half.

Pepperdine notched the first goal of the second half on a score by Jacob Young with 7:10 in the third quarter to give the Waves a 6-5 advantage. From that point on it was all Cal. Warden scored a goal at 6:46 in third period to tie the contest, 6-6. Then Dudley gave the Bears their first lead of the match, 7-6, on a lob shot over Wave goalie Tommy O’Connell with 6:08 in the third quarter.

Cal continued its onslaught by outscoring Pepperdine, 6-1, the rest of the way with Saponjic scoring two of his three goals during the Bears’ run. Sophomore Ivan Rackov, who entered the match as Cal’s leading scorer with 36 goals, didn’t score against the Waves, but led the Bears with five assists. Sophomore Cory Nasoff tallied a goal and paced Cal with five steals. Brett Auer led Pepperdine with three goals and goalie O’Connell finished with eight saves.

“We were able to finally pull away in the fourth quarter,” said Cal coach Kirk Everist. “Pepperdine started out strong, but we were able to weather the storm and adjust in the second half. The guys did well adjusting to their defense and we started getting good looks at two-meter.”

Women’s Tennis doing great:

STANFORD, Calif. – All three seeded California women’s tennis players earned berths into the singles quarterfinal of the 2009 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championship in day-two matches Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Top-seeded sophomore Jana Juricova, fourth-seeded junior Marina Cossou and sixth-seeded junior Mari Andersson each earned the right to join the final eight players remaining in the singles championship. Cossou and freshman Annie Goransson will also play in the doubles quarterfinal.

After a campus-wide power outage suspended matches on the first day, singles round of 64 matches were completed as the first order of business on day two. A pair of Golden Bear freshmen advanced to the round of 32; Nelly Radeva took a 6-2, 6-0 win against Carmen Pham of Santa Clara and Goransson blasted Blair Reed of San Francisco in a 6-0, 6-0 win. Freshman Tayler Davis was barely edged in a 7-5, 7-6(3) match against Catherine Isip of Saint Mary’s College. Sophomore Stephany Chang was also eliminated after her opponent, Joyce Ardies of Washington, pulled out a three-set victory with a 6-3 win in the third.

Juricova flexed her No. 4 ranking in the round of 32 and took out Stanford’s Jennifer Yen, 6-1, 6-2, before she advanced to the quarterfinal with a 6-0, 6-2 win against the 11th seed, No. 67 Brittany Blalock of Cal Poly. Cossou also had little trouble in the round of 32 as she dispatched Laura Pola of Fresno State, 6-1, 6-0, to advance. She then grinded out a three-set victory against Stacy Tan of Stanford. Cossou fell, 11-9, in the first set tiebreaker and won the second-set tiebreaker, 14-12. No. 26-ranked Andersson defeated Veronica Li of Stanford, 6-4, 6-1, in the round of 32 before she took out a second Cardinal, No. 75-ranked Carolyn McVeigh, 6-4, 6-4, in the round of 16.

Men’s tennis doing well, too:

BERKELEY – The California men’s tennis team completed the second day of the 2009 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championship with five doubles teams headed to the round of 16. In the singles championship, four Golden Bears also earned spots in the round of 16 including freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt, who upended the top-seed, No. 7-ranked Alex Clayton of Stanford, in three sets.

Konigsfeldt dropped the first set in his match, 6-4, before battling Clayton to a second-set tiebreaker where he came away with a 7-4 win. Konigsfeldt maintained control of the match and won the third set, 7-5, to upset Clayton and advance. Fourth-seeded junior Pedro Zerbini continued his run with a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory against Rainer Nachbauer of San Francisco; while sophomore Nick Andrews pulled out a three-set win over Nicholas Bjerke of Oregon, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, as one of the ninth seeds.

Junior Bozhidar Katsarov was the fourth Cal player to move into the round of 16 with his 7-5, 6-2 win against David Ayoun of Fresno State. Fellow juniors Zach Gilbert and Jonathan Dahan didn’t fare as well, however, as each fell in two sets. Gilbert went the distance with Rikus DeVilliers of Fresno State before falling, 11-9, in the first-set tiebreaker; before coming up short in a 7-5 loss in the second set. Dahan was eliminated by Artem Gramma of Pacific, 6-1, 6-4.

In singles consolation matches, sophomore Sky Lovill dropped just five games on his way to two victories that put him into the round of 16 in the back draw. First, Lovill defeated George Anastopoulos of Sacramento State, 6-1, 6-0. Then he took out Nick Amaroli of UC Davis, 6-1, 6-3.

Well yes, counselor, I could have concluded that Mo Vaughn is or was a baseball player. Further, I might have concluded from Ragnarok’s comment that at the time that Mr Phillips traded for Mr Vaughn, this was not considered to be an astute management decision on the part of baseball aficionados. However, I could not reasonably have concluded anything further about the nature of the alleged suck on the part of Mr Vaughn, hence the attempt to obfuscate the matter by implying a sexual motivation to the transaction. I felt that this would be so obviously satirical as to ensure that it was not considered defamatory, libelous, etc.

A few years ago I was on a project where, in order to get government contracting officers from 9 organizations to agree that in fact they were all following the same process, I had to work up and get approved by all of them a six-phase, 1300 action / decision process map.

All of them were following the Federal Acquisition Regulations, mind you. But because they had fractionally different approval processes and bought different things, we spent – conservatively – the equivalent of $300,000 in contractor and government labor and travel to get everyone to admit that they weren’t precious unique blossoms.

But on the plus side, I get to enjoy random cancellation of 401(k) matching, occasional staff purges, and having to spend 2 – 3 weeks trying to justify replacing dead laptops for developers who can’t write code on paper.

Derrick Hill day-to-day with sprained shoulder

Okanes:

Nose tackle Derrick Hill suffered a sprained shoulder against the Cougars. Jeff Tedford said Hill is day to day. The good news for the Bears is backup Kendrick Payne saw a handful of snaps yesterday after retuning from a foot injury. And Aaron Tipoti has played well in Payne’s place. That being said, Hill played at a pretty high level yesterday and would be missed if he has to sit out Saturday’s game at Arizona State.

I started my professional career (a long long long time ago) as an intern for the Dodgers. I had a great time. I don’t know why my resume was picked over anyone else’s – it really was a long time ago – I remember calling them back on my apartment phone. I don’t think I’ve used a home or apartment phone in 8 years.

Do you have specific questions? I didn’t really do a whole lot in my internship then, but I also have direct experience supervising interns at my other jobs – same industry – that I might be able to provide some insight into.

by LeonPowe on Oct 25, 2009 11:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know, what I’m most interested in/ concerned about at the moment is how this works with my school. The job is “Executive Sales Intern.” It’s listed as going from this November thru next September, and they require that you be earning credits toward a degree to qualify. Obviously, I can’t do anything to adapt my schedule to working in San Francisco at this point in the semester, so I wonder what their expectations are in that area. Of course, I’m sure I’ll find out more if I get further in the process.

I never really saw myself as being a sales-type person, but I think it could still be a great experience and a way to get my foot in the door, which is what I’m really looking for.

I've been Honked...

by giantfan5 on Oct 25, 2009 11:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you get the internship (well I don’t know about the evil evil Giants) but other organizations I have worked for have been pretty flexible with interns, since they tend to know the most important thing for everyone is to get to their degree.

My guess is that as an executive sales intern (and this is only a guess) you’d be doing lots of sales support, rather than actual sales. Research, powerpoint decks, sales meeting preperation, database management, sending gifts to potential clients/customers, running around on gameday making sure potential clients are seated, happy, etc.

If you want – get my email address from the mods and I can give you a bit more specific on email.

The total rushing yards will place him somewhere in the top 5 all-time at Cal. I’d also assume the 42 TDs is either a record or damn close to it. I think Marshawn ended up with 35 TDs in 35 games, Jahvid will almost certainly surpass him in about the same number of games.

Jimmy Tran of the Daily Cal talks about the Cal defense

LINK

The two victories — one last week against UCLA at the Rose Bowl, the other on Saturday in an expected 49-17 decision against Washington State at Memorial Stadium — mask a defense that has yielded huge yardage to two of the worst offenses in the Pac-10.

In fact, the unit has given up 440 yards or more of total offense in each of its last four games — not exactly the numbers expected from a defense that was supposed to be one of the best in the West this season.

Steve Fanua???

“We lost our focus,” defensive coordinator Bob Gregory said. “We got out to an early lead and thought it was too easy and lost our focus, particularly the secondary.”

Concerned with the letdown, members of the coaching staff and backup players voiced their opinions during the halftime meeting.

“We had some nice fire words in the locker room at halftime,” defensive end Cameron Jordan said. “It even came from one of the young bucks. Steve Fanua came in and fired everybody up. He doesn’t like losing. The boy is crazy.”

Gabriel Baumgaertner praises Cutara's volleyball performance

LINK

Senior outside hitter Hana Cutura led the team with 21 kills and a .562 hitting percentage, finishing the best weekend that any Cal player has had this season. Cutura moved into third place on the program’s career kills list with 1,736, moving ahead of former standout Angie Pressey.

“Right now I’m healthy, I don’t want to jinx myself, but this season has been great so far regarding that,” Cutura said. “This weekend, things came together and we played good. We played the best we’ve played so far.”

With 52 kills on just four errors and a .600 hitting percentage in two matches this weekend, Cutura is almost sure to be named the Pac-10 Player of the Week, an honor she has never earned despite her illustrious Cal career.

“She was definitely very, very smooth,” Feller said. “I sure hope she gets Player of the Week in the Pac-10 because she had some pretty unreal numbers. With (four) errors on the weekend in 60, 70-some swings, that’s pretty good.”

Cutura’s play was only one impressive element of a very successful weekend for the team.

Gotta say, it was pretty shocking how Hana singlehandedly dismantled #16 Zona. They are a very tall team and usually block Hana well. She’s just more mature and has more of a multi-dimensional attack now. She does the drop shots, roll shots, she aims cross-court and she can still unleash her cannon when she wants to.

The Wash. St Effect?

I was surprised to see Florida had a vastly superior Strength of Schedule when compared to USC. SC is 40 spots behind Florida, in spite of the fact USC’s OOC schedule includes @Ohio St and @Notre Dame, while Florida played solely at home and thus far includes Troy and Charleston Southern.

Florida’s Opponents:
Charleston Southern FCS
Troy 5-2
Tenn. 3-4
Kentucky 4-3
LSU 6-1
Arkansas 3-4
Miss. St 3-5
…Florida has beaten three winning teams, and only two from BCS conferences.
…Excluding Charleston So. the combined record of their opponents is 24-19. If you include only BCS conference teams their records drop to 19-17.

USC
SJSU 1-5
Ohio St 6-2
Washington 3-5
Wash. St. 1-6
Cal 5-2
Notre Dame 5-2
Oregon St. 4-3
…USC has beaten 4 winning teams, all of whom are from BCS conferences.
…The total records for their opponents is 25-25, including only BCS opponents the total record becomes 24-20.

Add in USC played more road games, why are they 40 spots behind Florida in Strength of Schedule?

I wonder if Coach Tedford watched the Texans-Niners game:

“Our offense is in a rut, and we have playmakers on the field. And we need to get the ball to them,” the coach said, explaining his instinct. He called for Alex Smith at the start of the second half, reasoning: “Let’s see what he can do in an adverse situation.”
Houston head coach Gary Kubiak, a former journeyman quarterback, said it best. “You know, I was that guy for many years,” he said, “and when you’re the backup guy, and your team’s struggling, you can just go in and cut it loose.

I note that Sweeney was 3-3 for 21 yards in garbage time. No, I’m not saying Riley had a bad game I’d just like to see an opportunity for the man-child from Fresno.

Riley hasn’t been struggling these last two games, and I think the big thing with him is developing consistency and overcoming the jitters. The best situation to work on this would be in game. Sweeney will get his chance — the coaches are going to play the best players

Well for one Riley has started more than 10 times the games Sweeney has, Riley is a RS Junior so he has four years worth of experience in the system, and has proven that he can make the throws (even if he is a bit inconsistent). Whereas with Sweeney we know shit.

Listen man I don’t want to argue with you, but it’s getting pretty boring with this calling for the backup QB business.

Look buddy (see what I did there), I’m not calling for Sweeney-the-rest-of-2009, but I think he deserves (d) more playing time in light of a) Cal’s season not looking as rosy, b) Riley clearly not having it in some games, and c) Sweeney coming on as of late.

Say Riley plays all of the rest of this year and next…and then Sweeney gets his chance in 2011 and is really good. Won’t you wonder “what if?”

I see where you’re coming from but I won’t be saying “what if”. Because if he was Jesus in cleats in 2011 I’d think that it’s possible that he might have been as good in 2009 but more likely he wouldn’t have been because he didn’t have the experience. In other words I’d attribute his greatness to being in the system for two more years.

So I guess it all goes back to do we play for the future or this season?

So, in my mind, Tedford is playing to get all the wins in 2009. Let’s play for 2011 in 2011. Riley puts Cal in the best position to get to 10 wins in 2009. That’s good enough for me?

My only quarrel with the use of Sweeny to date is the definition of “garbage time.” For instance, against WSU, he should have played at least the entire 4th quarter. This is because I would like a back-up who has as much playing time as reasonably possible in case of injury to the starter, not because I want Riley replaced.

Not quite to that extreme.

I refuse to accept that other QBs on the roster are as inaccurate (or worse) than Riley. If they are, this program’s in trouble. If one person’s obvi not getting done (which we’ve seen this year), I don’t get not letting the # 2 guy get a somewhat meaningful crack at it. If he sucks, well…you lost the game anyways. If he wins, suddenly you’ve now learned something that you didn’t know previously. Also, this provides valuable reps in the event that Riley gets Pain Trained.

How long does one get? 2-3 years? And why couldn’t Sweeney get a half when Cal was getting blown out? Riley, Riley’s momma, Coach Tedford, Bak Bak, and the entire Cal fanbase new Riley wasn’t going to find it in those games.

From watching the dots light up and text roll on ESPN’s gamecast, Sweeney looked awesome on Saturday! Seriously though, it was nice to see read he could complete what I would assume is the intermediate timing patterns in the 7-10 yard range.

Quick hit thoughts on the Niners QB situation

1) I have not read press releases yet, but I hope Shaun HIll is still the starting QB
2) I’ve been a huge Alex Smith apologist, but his success in the Texans game was a combination of better playcalling (horrible in the first half), as well as the fact that the Texans did not gameplan for him. I honestly feel if you give the Colts a week to gameplan for Smith, he’ll look like classic Alex Smith
3) Shaun Hill is still a solid QB who will manage the game and not turn the ball over. You cannot give up on him after a bad half, which was partially induced by poor playcalling.
4) Blah blah blah, if you have two QBs you have none.

Anyway, that’s it. Start Hill!

by Rishi on Oct 26, 2009 9:12 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah – I think point #2 is the key – Smith came in and they used a totally different gameplan. They were running basically a spread offense whereas with Hill they try to run it up the middle or throw screen passes.

I like Hill, but unfortunately if the defense is giving up points, like they did against Atlanta and Houston, we need to score some points too. Up until now, the was no reason to think that Alex Smith would ever be associated with scoring points. However, maybe contrary to popular belief, the spread can work in the NFL – and Alex Smith seems to be pretty good at it. Not saying that Smith should start – but I see no reason that Smith and Hill shouldn’t be splitting time.

by Tedfordisgod on Oct 26, 2009 9:46 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t necessarily disagree — I think the spread has potential in the NFL. I just really think it’s too quick to give up on Hill, especially when he’s given so much to the team. It’s unfortunate that we are now a game behind the Cards, but the season is still young and there is plenty of potential. We do have a tough schedule going forward, but games against the Jags and the Titans are definitely winnable; it’s honestly in how well we do within the division from here on out.

Plus, the addition of a healthy Frank Gore and Crabtree (once Hill gets more acclimated with him) will really help jumpstart this offense.

Press conference is at noon our time, so I’ll be watching very closely.

starting Hill has jumped the shark.

It’s Smith time baby. His balls have dropped.

Your point re: the playcalling is an excellent one. This 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense is so pre-Smith, pre-Crabby and, in a way, pre-Big Vern.

I didn’t see as much of the second half as the first half, to be honest. But what I saw in the first half, many of th eproblems stemmed from poor OLine play. Like that play where they let Mario FN Williams just come unblocked.

My understanding is that the Niners OLine played much better in the second half. So, that would account for increased success independent of hill or smith.

This is also a very valid point. Poor o-line play, poor playcalling, and a good defensive gameplan for the Texans led to that 21-0 hole. Singletary’s move worked, but I hope we don’t read into it too much.

You know, one would think that offensive line play would be seen as more important than it is

seeing as how it’s the one part of the offense that’s directly involved in EVERY PLAY.

I blame fantasy football.

In any event, the Niners line is comic-opera horrible, and it doesn’t matter what the skill players do right now IMO. If you cannot block the opposing team, you will not move the football. It’s really that simple.

My professor pointed out to me today

that movie houses with the word “theatre” in the title (in the US, obviously) are all porn screens, while ones with the word spelled with the normal “theater” are mostly ordinary movie houses.

I don’t know whether this means anything, it was just the first thing that came to mind seeing your odd use of the British spelling of “center.”

Basically, my thought is that Shaun Hill can give you a C game at QB every game. Every once in awhile he’ll play a B, B- game against inferior competition, and a D+, C- game against good teams. He has a ceiling. Smith is probably riskier, but he has a higher potential. The niners need a QB right now with a higher potential.

Frankly I think that the niners are either going to need to draft a QB, or hope that Nate Davis is ready sooner rather than later. But I’ll hold out hope that Smith’s 2nd half wasn’t a fluke.

I guess I’ve been burned by Alex Smith too many times to still have faith.

I’m also of the view that Smith has a much higher ceiling than a B game. I remember watching his first NFL start against the Bengals and I really liked what I saw out of him.

The guy has not played a full season — if he’s given time to develop, I think he can be a good to great starting QB.

Act all day, dance all night. Let's get it poppin'... I'm in Bombay, trick!

by Rishi on Oct 26, 2009 12:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s entirely possible that you’re right. I just think about some of the throws I see the elite QBs make – the kind that can give you an A game – Manning, Rodgers, Rivers, etc. The top 8-10 QBs in the league. When I watch them I just can’t imagine Hill making the same throws.

Obviously, unless Smith makes a huge leap he’s not doing that either, but I think it’s more likely. In any case, I’d hope the niners will keep trying to find a guy who can play to that level.

The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS

by norcalnick on Oct 26, 2009 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I mean, I honestly have some really blind faith that Nate Davis is that guy, but he’s still so raw that he needs a year or so of development before he will become that guy.

I understand the issue with Hill is honestly his arm strength. It’s not as bad as it’s made out to be, but he cannot make the kind of tight-knit throws that a Flacco or Roethlisberger can. But ball security is more important than arm strength (see Cutler, Jay).

Why is everyone so scared of giving a backup meaningful playingtime when it comes to QB? Every other position, save for the punter, has backups getting meaningful PT.

They used to think only white people could play QB, too.

Every other position, save for the punter, has backups getting meaningful PT.

Every other position save for kickers has a much higher physical burden that typically requires rest to maintain peak performance.

Having said that, elite linemen, WRs and defensive players miss very few plays. The niners can’t afford to let Patrick Willis take many plays off.

“Scared” isn’t the right word, more like “unwilling.” And the answer is that we don’t want to lose games, and I trust Tedford to start the QB more capable of winning the game.

Why couldn’t it be the other way around? If Oregon wins out, wouldn’t they have a decent shot at the MNC game? They didn’t start out as highly ranked as USC, but their lone loss was to #7 Boise State, and not currently-unranked Washington.

by atomsareenough on Oct 26, 2009 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also, Boise State creates a BCS nightmare scenario. If Boise State is undefeated and Oregon is 11-1 — with a loss to Boise State — well, you see the problem. I think the BCS will really want to avoid that.

Sounds wonderful!

This is my favorite DOOM scenario:

Better yet: If Texas should fall and the system has to choose among the Hawkeyes, Frogs and Bearcats for the second slot in the championship game when there’s no agreement across the board about any of them; if it comes to that, it’s even odds that the pollsters just throw up their hands and vote for one-loss USC over one of the unbeaten upstarts, in which case it gets really fun.

I'm rooting for a Duck loss

I don’t want the Ducks to go the Rose Bowl. See in the past 6 or so years USC has won the Pac-10 but in those years there’s always someone fighting to break the dominance, be it Cal, Oregon or Oregon St. So far no one has done it so we can recruit saying that “hey look next year is the year we beat USC and go to the Rose Bowl”. If Oregon does it then Oregon can use that against Cal and hurt our recruiting.

In short what I’m trying to say is that Oregon going to the Rose Bowl is worse for us

Spencer Hall is high on the Pac-10
Linky

Q is for Quorum. The minimum number of people needed to seat a body of oversight, or what is lacked across the board in the SEC right now in terms of quality teams. Talent abounds, but turnover has taken a hard bite out of the coaching ranks and talent pool, leaving the SEC in a state of flux. Even Alabama and Florida, the titans of the league right now, clearly have serious issues resulting from the loss of offensive players to the draft and graduation. I am as blatant an SEC homer as exists, but this year there are other conferences putting together a more complete menu in terms of teams with depth and cohesion. That conference, for the moment, is the Pac-10. Now I’m going to hide in a bombproof bunker and wait for a while until I hear the bombshells stop landing.

R is for Re: Q and Please Not in the Face. No one will believe this until bowl season comes by, but for once don’t dismiss Jeff Sagarin’s 1980s Apple IIe style as madness. USC is pumping along nicely, Oregon State has a superb offense, Oregon may be the best team in the conference now that the defense seems to be part of the math in Eugene, Cal can win as long as you don’t tell them they’re supposed to, and Arizona and Arizona State both field competitive, tough squads on both sides of the football. Stanford boasts the stout running of Toby Gerhart and the improving qb play of Andrew Luck. Washington adopts the role of kamikaze team—they might die, but they’re certainly going to take some of you with them when they do—leaving Washington State and UCLA in the cellar as the two only really flaccid teams in the conference. Right now, they possess the most complete profile of any conference top to bottom, a choice made easier by the Big 12 existing only as a half-conference right now. (Just don’t look at the Big 12 North. Please. We beg you.)

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Best, Vereen want more wildcat

The intriguing question: How will the Wildcat work in Cal’s upcoming games, starting next week against Arizona State?

“We’re not going to live on it, but we’re going to carry it as part of our package,” coach Jeff Tedford said. “Every week, we can do something different with it.”

The formation produced four good plays in Cal’s breakout first quarter, when the Bears surged ahead 28-3. Among them: Fleet freshman Isi Sofele took an end-around handoff from Best and scooted 17 yards, and Best later took off on a sweep for 25 yards.

Best and Vereen clearly like handling the ball – they routinely suggest Wildcat plays to Cal’s offensive coaches. Vereen wants to throw the ball and Best wouldn’t mind adding option-play twists, just to give defenses more to ponder.

Asked what he would do if put in charge of the Wildcat, Vereen smiled and said, “It would get crazy, but I know it would work.”

Clearly Cal doesn’t need any help recruiting RBs, but actually successfully integrating the Wildcat must be a thrill to see for any back. Jahvid and Shane are a lucky pair of dudes.

Serious Wild Bear-related question

When we run the formation with Vereen, he is, technically-speaking, a threat to throw. Jahvid Best is only really going to run.

One thing I noticed is that Vereen has the “QB towel” when he runs it. Best does not. I’m sure the reasons behind this have to do with Best not being a good thrower, but why not put the QB there just to pretend he can possibly throw?

Act all day, dance all night. Let's get it poppin'... I'm in Bombay, trick!

by Rishi on Oct 26, 2009 12:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because nobody’s going to fall for it, and added complexity can hurt the offense if it’s unnecessary or confusing?

The advantage is not in the threat of throwing the ball, but in simply having an extra blocker. Plus, Best handing off to Vereen (or faking the handoff) has got to be tough to defend if you give them 9 blockers.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

by ragnarok on Oct 26, 2009 12:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

and Isi actually got the ball on the fly sweep out of the Wildcat on Saturday. It’s important to actually let him run it now and then to force a D to think about it.

by turkey on Oct 26, 2009 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree. The Wildcat absolutely works best when there is a threat to throw (see McFadden, Darren).

That said, just giving him a towel when he lines up under centre adds a small little element. I really don’t think it’s so complex that it would hurt the offense.

Act all day, dance all night. Let's get it poppin'... I'm in Bombay, trick!

by Rishi on Oct 26, 2009 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m with Rishi on this one. I think that if we give some semblance of a threat to pass the ball out of the Wildbear, it can only enhance its effectiveness.

That said, I like that we’ve done more with the formation with Best as the QB than simply have Best run with it. The end around to Sofele is a nice wrinkle. I also like the idea of having Vereen and Best on the field at the same time.

Praise be to Tedford!

Double reverse trickery!!!!

Best is actually a better thrower than Riley, he’s just setting em up for the long ball down the line… Watch for it this year when Bears play @Leland Jr. U, Best to Vereen, 80 yard TD!!!!!

But on a serious note, I haven’t watched the WRs (besides Sofele) on our Wildbear plays… Do we always keep Riley on the field?

Because (on a less serious note) we shoul think about how to incorporate his arm into the formation, double reverse Best hands to Isi who pitches to Riley who hits Vereen in stride for the long TD… I’m with Shane on this thing, let’s get crazy!!!!!

Undefeated in Southern California since Oct. 2009...

Would that negate the whole point of the extra blocker advantage that the wildcat gets you? Besides, I think we all saw @ UCLA what kind of blocks Riley can throw. He just has to be careful to lead with his left shoulder.
