I'll Guess
“Oklahoma State is ahead of Houston.”
“Mississippi is ahead of South Carolina.”
“Where’s Cal?”

Do you live in California or the Southeast?
Mine’s quirkier. Don’t worry.
Houston doesn’t even make it, and Utah’s 25

Yes.
Neither Mississippi or South Carolina should be ranked. The fact that Mississippi is above Ohio State and Miami is my biggest qualm. Yes, more so than that typo next to the number 1.

And I don’t really care that Cal isn’t ranked. We haven’t really beaten anyone…

Ohio State and Miami
If they wanted to be higher than Mississippi, they shouldn’t have lost to Purdue and Clemson.

IDK. I think Mississippi is living off all the talent it lost from last year’s team in your poll… absolutely horrible running game this year. I’d be willing to rank them near where you have them if they play very well @ Auburn next week

and Memphis, Southeast Louisiana, UAB, and Northern Arizona won’t give me any more info about that team.

Mississippi
I kept them in the poll after losing to Alabama a few weeks ago. I didn’t see anyone else I could add. I still felt as if they were better than Notre Dame and Pittsburgh, so I kept them in there. Then, in the following week, four teams between 17 and 22 fell. They all dropped out. Ohio State and Oklahoma lost, so I felt as if Mississippi should move up and be ahead of them. Mississippi’s losses were to pretty solid teams and Oklahoma had three losses. There, I had them 19th. They won again on Saturday. I was disappointed in Miami (FL) for losing at home to Clemson. Ohio State’s loss to Purdue is worse than any Mississippi loss. Mississippi’s loss to Alabama is better than any Ohio State loss. I hope that makes sense to you guys.

Yeah, the way you’ve evaluated it makes sense. You’re just more rigid in your rankings.
The way I rank, teams can jump and drop incredibly.

Moving Up and Moving Down
It takes kind of a lot for me to move teams up and down. I kept USC, Cincinnati, LSU, Boise State, Iowa and Oregon in the same spot from last week to this week. I moved TCU up four spots for owning BYU.
However, I moved Texas up two spots with Florida and Alabama struggling. Texas’ defense has been outstanding and they totally killed Missouri. I didn’t think Missouri was as bad as they made them look. For me, deciding the top three teams was the hardest. The next hardest thing was deciding where Central Michigan, South Carolina, BYU and California should go.

That’s all sound to me. I should’ve taken a harder look at Texas’ win over Missouri; I don’t think I gave that enough consideration.
For some reason, I get the feeling you tend to underrate West Coast teams a little bit because you get to see them more much more and can readily see their flaws, whereas you don’t get to see the other teams so much and don’t have a gut reaction to their flaws. Think that’s a possibility?

Maybe
I actually thought I was biased towards the Pac-10 at first, but I just don’t know.
I would’ve ranked Cal if we ranked the top 27 teams. I still really like Oregon State and they’d be in my top 35.

You have convinced me on why they should be ahead of OSU. But Miami? A team that has had one of, if not the, toughest schedules so far and come out 5-2 versus a team that has done nothing. I don’t really think that SCar is any better than Clemson.

I will say, I’m impressed by your ability to submit the first ballot-comment every week.
I’m still not a fan of the mentality of moving teams up or down week to week based on the previous weeks performance, but in general at this point I don’t have any specific problems with your poll. I don’t even have my own poll yet so we’ll see if we have any major disagreements. Also think we’ve gotten to the point where ranking Ok St above Houston is fair (especially since Houston has a loss), though I’m pretty unimpressed by either of their resumes…

I’ll give them credit if they notch a big victory over a solid team in a bowl game, but until then they’ve pretty much hit the ceiling. Playing in a crappy conference like that, they need to schedule more than one A-team per year if they want to be taken seriously. Too bad for them Hawaii isn’t so great anymore.

I didn't notice that until you pointed it out
Voters must be pretty impressed with those solid wins over teams like big, bad Illinois and Wisconsin.

Well, they’re only 18th in yours and 19th in mine. It’s not like we have them really high or anything.

They very well could be bad. Check out their resume so far. Close win against Minnesota. Close win against Michigan State. The rest of their wins are a joke. They’ve also been stomped by Ohio State and lost to Iowa. I think they’re in a pretty similar position to Cal right now – they need a couple more games against BCS conference teams before we can really figure out where they’re at.

2 Iowa
3 TCU
4 Texas
5 Boise State
6 Florida
7 Cincinnati
8 Georgia Tech
9 Oregon
10 USC
11 LSU
12 Houston
13 Miami
14 Oklahoma State
15 Pitt
16 Penn State
17 West Virginia
18 Virginia Tech
19 Central Michigan
20 Arizona

28 BYU
29 Navy
30 Kansas
31 South Florida
This week I did a blind-resume fashion, meaning I took out all the names (replaced by Sagarin predictor ranking) and then sorted teams based on their resume. Interesting results. Obviously this method can’t account for a lot of variables, I don’t intend it to be perfect.

Boise @5 in a resume-ballot?

by royrules22 on Oct 26, 2009 7:55 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You could look at them of 5/7 in the undefeateds. Florida and Cincinnati haven’t beaten any great teams (LSU is like 26 in Sagarin), while BSU has a win over Oregon.
by GBB4188 on Oct 26, 2009 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Also keep in mind that many teams have played 4 crap OOC teams anyway at this point, so they aren’t really any better than Boise yet.
