Cal-Washington State Postgame Thread & Grade the Bears

This is the place to discuss how I couldn't understand what was going on because Joe Starkey was calling the game the Cal-Washington State game. If you want to discuss the rest of the games, scroll down to the "Non-Cal Football Open Thread"!

For the report card, it'll probably be harder for people who weren't at the game to get a clear season, so it's understandable if you can't fill in things like defense or offensive line categories. People who WERE at the game, please write up what you saw at the game! Considering how few people attended, we'll need them all. The form is here, or you can click after the jump to submit it directly from the site.

Postgame thoughts will be coming sometime tonight or Sunday morning!

I was bored out of my mind during the first quarter

Then the next three quarters I was facepalming at every long pass given up by our secondary.

Bah, alright, bored wasn't the right word

After 3 TDs my attention started drifting from the game to the fellowship application essays I should probably have been doing.

I am in complete agreement with that statement. After 3 TDs, you do start to lose focus. I watched the rest of the game, but spent most of it just enjoying the afternoon with friends while a football game happened to exist nearby.

I am in complete agreement with that statement. After 3 TDs, you do start to lose focus. I watched the rest of the game, but spent most of it just rolling in between the bleacher seats, actively roiling in a heroin/E/speedball rage, trying to claw my eyeballs out as my friends and onlookers screamed in terror.

Should be interesting grading

After all, many of us didn’t actually watch the game!

Kind of an evening out of emotions. Last week, I was inordinately happy with the win over Fucla, mentally capable of overlooking a lot of the warts in the win. This week, I’m somewhat disgruntled over a 49-17 win over WSU, emotionally incapable of looking past the fact that we gave up a crapload of yards.

Praise be to Tedford!

Yet we did pitch a second half shut out, and they did have the ball for billions of plays because of the quick strike nature of our early scoring.

Yeah, I think it must have been more frustrated for people who weren’t able to see it. Perhaps especially for those listening to Starkey – the man isn’t exactly an optimist

by Tedfordisgod on Oct 24, 2009 6:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Starkey is normally a cheerful guy, at least after the game when I listen to his post-game talks and stuff. He brought up the obvious problem with pass coverage which was prevalent today, but he, Troy Taylor and the Paragon crew all said that they have positive outlooks to the rest of the season (we’ll finish 9-3 or 10-2, stuff like that).

Post-game I think you get the picture of everything that happened. But during the course of the game, you get analysis of each play. When you are listening to the radio, without a picture, and here “Riley overthrows the pass” your tendency is to assume that it was an awful pass. But, you have a really limited amount of information. Unlike some announcers, I think Starkey does do a decent job of not just ignoring what is happening on the field because the Bears have a 30 point lead.

The California Golden Hurdlers

I swear, our team hurdles more people than any other team ever. For those who weren’t there, Deboskie had a great run where he hurdled a guy to pick up a 1st down.

In response to JrBear above, Covaughn is good, but you probably won’t see him much with Isi. The three guys I expect to see next season (assuming Jahvid doesn’t come back) would be Shane, Isi, and Dasarte. I have a really good feeling about Dasarte, who is moving around and running a lot better and looks to be recovering well from his injury. Dude is fast and powerful and has the potential to be a great back for us starting as early as next year.

Also on the topic of the future, it was really good to see Sweeny get into the game so early in the 4th quarter. He completed several nice passes, at least two of which were for 1st downs. Overall, a lot of good stuff in that game.

Yeah. I like Beau a lot. The QB competition this off-season will pretty interesting. Beau has the spot now, but Brock could still make a move to reclaim the spot. It’s not like one is miles better than the other; both are pretty good QB’s.

by Thoroughbred on Oct 24, 2009 7:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s good to hear – super-accuracy certainly is the trait that Rodgers and Leinart had in common, and they were the last two QBs who have really been awesome in the P-10.

Random question: On what are you basing that assessment? Have you been watching practices, just reading articles, or watching HS highlights?

One the Ross punt return here’s his call “Ross takes the punt…turns a corner…he’s gone but it won’t matter. There’s a flag on the Bears. Blah blah blah” Very low key the whole time. Then shock when its a hold on the Cougs. God, he sucks. No descriptions, no feel for the game.

“Riley drops back to pass…throws…HE’S GOT IT! Jeremy Ross!” Lots of shit like that. Fuck an A he sucks

He kept going on and on about players’ names. He’d see a name and make some bizarre comment about how he’s in a random group somehow related to the name or how there’s some other person in history with a similar name who did something-or-other. We speculated that he was drunk or high (or both).

by the way, i'm persuing through the game threads

And Starkey is full of hyperbole. Tedford was definitely upset, but he wasn’t blasting Riley. The stadium was practically full until the second half to the 55k capacity, until the students were overwhelmed by the sun and started deserting up 42-17.

Tuel is a pretty good quarterback. Not great, but very good. Bears were playing a lot of man coverage in the first half and Tuel BURNED THEM with some great throws. Which is why Gregory went back to the zone.

I’m not sure practically full is really a good description. It wasn’t as bad as the EWU game, but there were definitely some gaping holes. Of course, the south east corner (near me) was particularily bad, because few WSU fans.

Cal offense was driving to the south endzone. QB option was called to the short side of the field. Riley ran the option and pitched. JT went out on the field and let a rip on Riley. I kind of doubt he was shouting words of encouragement. Lasted 5-7 seconds. The radio announcers on KALX talked about it as well.
