Upon initial quick glance inspection, it looks like your poll might not create enough controversy this week. I’m going to have to ask you to reconsider and submit a new one that will cause more arguments.

by Missing Barry on Oct 18, 2009 10:14 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed. My only problems this week are a few nitpicks: I believe in Miami, and Rated-R loves OKST for some odd reason.

it is so hard to come up with teams

I’m actually thinking about putting Cal back in

by racsan on Oct 17, 2009 11:45 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Teams Ahead of California

Teams I’d probably put in ahead of California are Central Michigan, Michigan, Oregon State, South Carolina, Nebraska, South Florida, Kansas and Idaho.

Kansas and Idaho may have fewer losses than Cal, but their wins are also less impressive, as are the teams they lost to. Also, I don’t think either team is better than the Bears. I didn’t vote for either, but I’d put Cal ahead of those two definitely.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

I'll be franker

Kansas sucks. SUCKS. Colorado was the best team they played this year, and they’re 2-5!

20-25 is so difficult

1 Alabama
2 Florida
3 Texas
4 Southern California
5 Cincinnati
6 Miami (Fla.)
7 LSU
8 Iowa
9 Oregon
10 TCU
11 Penn State
12 Oklahoma State
13 Boise State
14 Georgia Tech
15 Brigham Young
16 Virginia Tech
17 Oklahoma
18 Ohio State
19 Wisconsin
20 Pittsburgh
21 Kansas
22 Houston
23 Texas Tech
24 Utah
25 California

1 Alabama
2 Cincinnati
3 Florida
4 Texas
5 USC
6 Iowa
7 TCU
8 Boise State
9 Oregon
10 Miami
11 LSU
12 GT
13 VT
14 OKST
15 BYU
16 PSU
17 Central Michigan
18 ND
19 Houston
20 TTU
21 USC
22 Cal
23 AZ
24 Utah
25 Idaho

I do mine by putting together a list of potential top 25 teams with their record and previous game and then I sort this into a order list (about 40 teams) based on where I think they should be ranked in relation to eachother, THEN I assign numbers. First draft I surprised myself with Cal coming in at 19, so hopefully I don’t get smitten by the jinx gods. Outside of top 15 there are arguments for just about any team being ahead any other team, so I’m not going to worry too much about it.

I’m also jumping on the Vandal bandwagon.

Man who would have thought that Idaho would actually be a pretty decent win on Washington’s schedule? I hope they win forever. (Less likely given their closing stretch, though.)

Hey as the first person to official vote for Idaho last week

Give me some credit for jumping on it first!

In other words, Go Bears!

You may have credit

I was thinking about it, but was still unsure at 5-1. While I don’t really think they are top 25 now, I’m giving them love for the 6-1.

That’d be true if Arizona didn’t lose to UW.

by GBB4188 on Oct 19, 2009 10:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually that’s true regardless, as long as Thoroughbred was telling the truth about what he can and can’t do! (Which I guess means it isn’t really true at all, considering that TBred could just write Arizona 25 times if he wanted to, I mean, he could do almost anything with his top 25! but perhaps the implication was that TBred couldn’t do it “in good conscience” in which case he has a point.)

I haven’t voted yet, but now that we have a Cal W, I once again plan to submit a ballot. Will Cal be ranked? Will they be ranked #1? Your guess is as good as mine. Stay tuned!

Mumme Poll ballot for the week

Top Five:

    * Alabama
    * Florida
    * Texas
    * Cincinnati
    * Iowa

Next Seven:

    * Georgia Tech
    * Boise State
    * Southern Cal
    * Oregon
    * Miami
    * TCU
    * Virginia Tech

I couldn’t figure out an angle from which to approach my ballot until I decided that at midseason being undefeated is an accomplishment in and of itself, so it just became a problem of figuring out the top five undefeated teams arranged more or less by strength of schedule. That left Georgia Tech, Miami, Oregon, and SC as obvious picks, with the 12th spot coming down to either Virginia Tech and LSU. VT has two losses, but on the other hand motherfuck an LSU and also VT has a victory over one of the other teams on my ballot, so I felt justified passing the Tigers over.

I was planning on doing a really detailed vote this week looking over every team and tallying up their quality wins, and explaining why I ranked every team where I did. Didn’t have time. So, to everyone’s disappointment, I’ll admit just so I could vote I copied your poll and just made a couple of adjustments (AU over CMU being one). Hopefully next week I’ll get a really comprehensive poll in.

Doing a proper Top 25 is actually a lot more time-consuming than you’d think it should be. Heck, a proper Top 10 takes more than a few moments.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

by ragnarok on Oct 20, 2009 10:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep, that’s why I didn’t even try. Gotta go through every teams schedule, look at their opponents schedule….takes a lot of effort, but very satisfying in the end when you feel confident you can justify every position in the top 25…
