More than anything I was thrilled to see how Vereen played
Other than the amazing 93 yard run, Best was struggling today, and Vereen really carried us early in the game against a very tough defense. I really want Jahvid to stay, but if Shane keeps playing like this, our running game will still be in good shape next year (and the year after).
I just think they get up for Jahvid, they really key in on him, they loosen up on Vereen because they don’t think he can explode. Boy were they wrong.

UCLA and Notre Dame are my teams
So, this isn’t a good day for me. But things eventually turn, inexorably for the better or worse. So I say, good game to you Bear fans with class. To all the rest who hate UCLA or the southern half of California just for the sake of hating, things come down as sure as they rise. This is the only thing I know from life.

Me neither.
And why do people of Irish ancestry still hold allegiance to Notre Dame? That leprechaun of a mascot of theirs has got to be the most offensive ethnic caricature still walking the sidelines of college sports. I understand why, back in the day, the working classes made Notre Dame the first “America’s Team”, as a Catholic alternative to the WASP establishment that was the Ivy League. But that’s old history. The exclusive Ivy League doesn’t even compete on the national stage anymore, and the football establishment now consists mostly of large public schools and a few non-denominational privates. Meanwhile, the Irish and other immigrant groups from Catholic Europe are now “White”, more or less, rather than the discriminated-against minorities they used to be; anti-Catholic sentiment still exists in the U.S., to be sure, but nothing like the pre-WWII era in which Notre Dame made its name.
So unless you’re an alum, or from northwestern Indiana, why would anyone support Notre Dame, the school that’s too snobbish to join a conference and whose mediocre brand of football national television and radio audiences are subjected to year after year after year?

I’m not sure if this is meant as a rant, or as a serious question, but I’ll go ahead and treat it as the latter. As a matter of disclosure while considering my answer, I am neither Irish nor Catholic, though I have the rest of the U.K. pretty well covered.
Can a mascot be offensive if it is accurate? The degeneracy of the Irish in their early years in this country is a well-known fact. (If you would like to read about how and when this began to change, there’s a good article on it here). I suspect that the reason it is not considered offensive is because, at one point in time, it was true.
As for why the Irish still hold allegiance to Notre Dame, I think you answer your own question. It didn’t stop being a Catholic university when Kingman Brewster and the other Ivy League presidents decided to open up the Ivies to the rest of the country, and it has ridden its football success to academic excellence, ranked #20 in U.S. News’ most recent rankings. An academically challenging school that still maintains its Catholic allegiance and plays good average football to boot? Well, if I was Catholic I’d certainly consider it.
I’m not sure if this is meant as a rant, or as a serious question
It was a little of both, and I appreciate the response. I still have a hard time understanding Notre Dame’s national appeal in this day and age, but that probably says more about my own secular identity than anything else. I did marry into a Catholic family—Italian rather than Irish—although my wife’s even more anti-religious than me. That said, if I were to choose a school to follow just b/c it is Catholic, it would probably be Boston College: less attitude than Notre Dame and Doug Flutie remains the best college football player I ever saw play. My ideal-world first choice, though, would be USF; the Dons dropping football in the 1950s was perhaps the biggest blow Bay Area college football has ever suffered—besides Tom Holmoe, of course.

Thank you
Catholic family—Italian rather than Irish
It would be interesting to see if there were significant differences in various Catholic universities’ demographics by national/ethnic origin. That is, San Francisco used to have an enormous ethnic Italian population – I should know, I was born in North Beach. Did that factor into USF’s student body? And has the high level of Italian assimilation and subsuming of their Italian identity to an American one (I know of no equivalent Italian holiday to St. Patrick’s Day for instance) played a role in USF’s decline? Likewise, Georgetown would presumably be a much more desirable school than Notre Dame based on both location, history, and opportunity. But, I get the sense that it’s more popular among international Catholics than domestic ones.
I know of no equivalent Italian holiday to St. Patrick’s Day
Columbus Day?
I think there are at least two distinctions between Irish and Italian identities within the U.S.. First, the Italian identity is highly fragmented, at least within Italy, between all the different regions; my wife’s multi-generation North Beach family, for example, is far more Genovese than it is Italian. I get the sense, perhaps incorrectly, that Irish identities are more unified.
Second, any Irish identity, on either side of the Atlantic, is powerfully shaped by its juxtaposition versus Anglo- identities. Both within the UK and the US, it’s hard to conceive of being “Irish” in the absence of an English/Anglo-American culture that holds the historical reins of power. The Italian peoples never have had the same relations with the English.
But getting back to Notre Dame, the Congregation of Holy Cross—the order to which the “Fighting Irish” belong—is historically rooted primarily in France and North America. There are no significant ties to Ireland, and the only reason Notre Dame uses “Irish” as its nickname is because that was the bigotry of U.S. society back in the day. “Catholic” and “Irish” were used as synonyms, pejoratively, by WASP America. By adopting the “Irish” nickname, Notre Dame displayed an understandable sense of pride in its Roman Catholic faith, but in doing so the university merely confirmed the bigoted stereotyping of Irishness as an American “other”. In other words, I fully accept allegiance to Notre Dame as an authentic symbol of Catholic solidarity, but it is an entirely artificial token of Irishness. Consequently, Irish-Americans supporting Notre Dame today makes about as much sense to me as people with Aztec ancestry supporting San Diego State, people of Greek (or Turkish) ancestry supporting USC or San Jose State, or fans of decidedly non-Jewish Tottenham Hotspur calling themselves the “Yids”. Then again, who ever said sports fans were rational?
At least for me, having been raised in the woods of Montana by a family of Grizzlies, I can feel relatively secure in my support of the Golden Bears.
Go Bears!
by California Pete on Oct 19, 2009 12:12 AM PDT up reply actions
I think the Spurs fans took on that nickname as a response to anti-Semitic chants from fans of opposing clubs owing to their significant Jewish support in London (although why Spurs and not Arsenal I don’t know).
Ajax fans in Amsterdam have a similar thing even though Amsterdamers were just as quick as any other Dutch person to turn in their Jewish neighbors during WWII; I seem to remember reading that the Israeli embassy to the Netherlands actually asked Ajax supporters’ groups to back off with the Israeli flag-waving / Israeli flag tattoos because they thought that it was encouraging anti-Semitism.
Columbus Day?
Doubtful. Columbus Day was celebrated long before the Italians were here in any numbers. It is a celebration of Europe’s liberation from the geographical confines of the European continent. Take for example the reverence on display in the opening of the Columbian Oration by the decidedly non-Italian Chauncey Depew:
This day belongs not to America, but to the world. The results of the event it commemorates are the heritage of the peoples of every race and clime. We celebrate the emancipation of man.
Regarding the second portion of your comment,
There are no significant ties to Ireland, and the only reason Notre Dame uses "Irish" as its nickname is because that was the bigotry of U.S. society back in the day….and
By adopting the "Irish" nickname, Notre Dame displayed an understandable sense of pride in its Roman Catholic faith, are self-contradictory. If ND gave itself that nickname, then it couldn’t have been as a result of “U.S. society,” which carries the implication that it was somehow imposed upon the university.
I think the adoption of their nickname was much more practical than that. There just weren’t many Catholics in the country (1790 Census reveals that 98% of the country was Protestant for instance) until the Irish arrived, and once they did, they were pretty much alone until the arrival of the French, Italians, Spanish, Poles, and other Catholic adherents in the late 1900s/early 1910s.
Whether or not there was any historical affiliation, the Irish were their primary demographic in this country. Logically, the university changed to make itself more amenable to their needs.
To clarify, “Irish” and “Catholic” were used as synonymous pejorative labels by WASP America. Going with “Fighting Irish” really was just another way of saying the “Fighting Catholics”—taking ownership of a racialized slur and turning it around as a badge of honor. It’s a celebration of the Catholic faith, not of any sort of authentic Irishness (other than the obvious fact that most Irish are also Catholic).
I’ve already belabored the point, and if Americans of Irish ancestry choose to support Notre Dame out a sense of ethnic pride and not view the “Fighting Irish” nickname/mascot as derogatory, that’s fine by me. I’m neither Irish nor Catholic, so I suppose it’s none of my business even if I do find the use of caricatured ethnicity rather off-putting.
But as a college football fan, I will always despise Notre Dame for the same reason I despise the New York Yankees, the Dallas Cowboys, and Real Madrid—for their professed attitude that they are more important entities than the sports themselves, as if MLB, NFL, UEFA-CL, and NCAA-F would cease to exist without their participation.

I don’t have a strong opinion about MLB or the NFL, but I like the way that you think on the other two teams.
Once or twice when I’ve been back on trips to the Motherland I’ve seen guys wearing Notre Dame shirts who were local – I think it’s a minority choice by people who support Celtic (and to a lesser extent Hibernian) who look for various other Irish Catholic teams to “support” by wearing their shirts.
Ken Crawford’s a devout Catholic and Notre Dame fan (second only to the Bears), so he’s someone you might want to consult to get that perspective.

I love hearing conservatives complain about all the crazy homeless people on the streets. They’re only there because Reagan privatized all the hospitals. I guess he should have just euthanized them.

I remember reading something about this in my History 127AC class but that was the day I missed the lecture due to sprained ankle.

Reagan privatized all the mental hospitals
surprise surprise, a lot of people could not afford new, profit-driven (instead of gov’t) rates and thus were forced to leave. If you’re mentally ill and you don’t have a good support system (family), you’re probably ending up on the streets because you can’t acquire/keep a job or otherwise function in society.
I think it’s something like 50% of the homeless that have some sort of mental illness.

I will say this, being both flagship schools of the University of our great state; you being the first and foremost of that system, we are the second with traditions and accomplishments all our own. The accomplishments of the two schools should be respected and shared with the entire system. There really shouldn’t be that much animosity between UC schools and regions of the same state. However, maybe it’s confirmation bias of my own seeing it like that. So I’m going to try and maybe you could do the same.

See, you kind of prove my point
Again, I don’t hate Ucla. Just some of their fans. Some. Of Their Fans. Not all. Some. Ferrinstance, those who sort of parade around like a puffed-up dictator and won’t allow the slightest deviation from the officially sanctioned party line. Or, someone (and his followers) who will ban anyone with whom they disagree.
Obviously, not all Ucla fans are BN types. But BN types give Ucla fans a very bad name. As I’ve said before to others, I used to consider Ucla to be my second team. Until BNers talked me out of it.
Consider this: me and many other folks here at CGB have posted across all the other Pac-10 blogs, and have made similar comments on all of them. Yet only BN has banned any of us. Why was I banned? Oh, you’ll love this! I was banned because I dared to say that perhaps Dorrell wasn’t quite as bad as Nestor’s propaganda was claiming, and that I believed ucla had a legitimate chance to beat SC (this was the week before the famous 13 – 9 game). For that Nestor banned me.
You seem reasonable enough. But your buddies at BN are nuts, and have soiled you with their stench.
On ATQ I'm known as JSoCal Oski
It's spelled J-etc
The only thing I'm going to say to that is
I like it there. I think that Nestor can be “ban happy” at times but he runs a different blog than most. He’s no nonsense. We argue all the time over there though. I think people have been banned perhaps by his hair trigger at times but he’s usually pretty fair if you understand the parameters of what he is doing there. Here it is a different story, more free form. I like both styles actually and that is why I frequent both boards. Look at my past posts over there about CGB and you will see I tend to stick up for it.
I have been banned too. I was kicked off CC for something I said on another board. That seems wrong to me but that is their call to make and I don’t hold it against them.
Now, you and I have been around all these blogs for years now. I have read many of your posts. You have been softening your stance toward UCLA. I appreciate that. But you have got to realize that there are asshole fans in any fanbase. I don’t think the proportions are too drastically different either. I know many USC alumni who are some of the best people you could possibly know. They just happen to root for a pretty evil football team. I don’t personally hold it against them.
So I’m sorry you got banned from BN. Nestor tends to throw the bath water out with the baby at times and some people who do not deserve banning are banned. In his defense, he is a lawyer and runs a fairly intense content-rich blog. I’m sure his time in policing the board is limited.
Nestor is who he is. Different style there. I mean some here are complaining about him telling on someone for talking smack about BN. You know what? I tried to talk the tiniest of smack about CC after the Washington game and Nestor called me out for it. So he’s not a hypocrite.

Earlier in the year, I thought we were under utilizing Best at times and using too much Vereen. Then, today, we did the exact opposite, using Best when Vereen really should have been the guy on the field. That annoyed me a bit.
Otherwise, I am very pleased with this win. It is not 2007. That is enough for celebration.

Besides the obvious—winning in L.A. for the first time in the Tedford era, which was my #1 desire for the season—it was nice seeing the return of both Vereen and Anger to form.
I still have questions about how good this team really is, but it has at least demonstrated enough play-making ability to beat the mediocre and bad teams. And since that is all that is left on the schedule, there could (and perhaps should) be a lot of wins ahead.

OK, I am showing my age — but it reminded me of how teams put 3 infielders on the right side when Reggie Jackson was in his prime with the Oakland A’s. Best causes teams to change their defense, and opens up opportunities (which Tedford exploited).
I disagree
most of our running problems were caused by one man – Brian Price. It wasn’t that they were loading up more than other teams, they just happen to have a monster in the middle who was eviscerating our offensive line.

I’m glad we don’t have to see Brian Price again. He really made our O-line look inexperienced, double-teams and alll.

I like that we were able to beat up on a inferior opponent. It was good to see Best and Vareen get going again and Marvin Jones looks like he is developing into a big play WR. Riley looked sharper, especially with the deep balls that he threw.
My only critiques-
1) we couldn’t seem to sustain drives without a big play…I want to see Riley start consistently driving us down the field. I felt that there were too many 3 and outs and the big plays are what saved us.
2) The D has been solid all year, but it seemed like they were getting pushed around a bit and seemed to give up chunks of yardage to a decent offense. In their defense they did seem to not break in the red zone.
Still a win is a win
by calbears04 on Oct 17, 2009 5:54 PM PDT reply actions 1 recs
my feelings exactly
it’s great that we can come up with some huge plays, but when we can’t pull any jaw-droppers out of our hat, as we weren’t able to do against oregon or USC, then we have lots of trouble scoring, because we can’t put together any sustained, methodical drives. it seems like if we can’t get a quick strike or a huge gain on any particular drive, then we come up empty.
and on defense, it felt our playcalling was very conservative, especially in the 2nd half. there was a lot of give and UCLA could move the ball fairly well on several drives, which was a problem because their kicker has great range.
whoops

I thought Kevin Prince played a really good game out there. Yes, he made that bad throw that was picked for the TD. But besides that I think he made the key throws. He looked a LOT better than Craft did last year.

This is why I hate UCLA football so much—not the university, or the students/alumni in general, and most certainly not Southern California, which has been my home for more than half my life.
The inferiority complex vis-a-vis USC, leveraged by the sense of superiority tied to 100+ national championships in other sports, has made UCLA football very difficult to like by neutral observers for a long, long time. There’s nothing inherently wrong with blind irrational hatred toward a rival school when it comes to sports fandom. We celebrate victories over the hated rival, and we wallow in schadenfreude when the rival stumbles. But UCLAns seem to take it to a new level. I’ve encountered far too many who appear to hate the Trojans more than they love the Bruins, as if they’d rather see USC go 0-12 than UCLA go 12-0.
Go ahead and hate the Trojans all you want, but do so without the attitude that it is some sort of cosmic injustice whenever the Trojans win.

Watching the game on DVR
It’s nice to be able to pause and really watch the O-Line’s blocking schemes. Watching live, I tend to focus just on the ball, and miss everything else that’s happening on a play. I felt like since I work with the OL so much, I should really be familiar with what they’re doing out there.
