Cal v. UCLA 10.17.09 Pregame and First Quarter Thread
Can Cal rebound from a couple of rough weeks? We have the UCLA Bruins today. Given that we haven't scored a TD since sometime in 2003 and won in LA since sometime in the mid 70s, I take nothing for granted. Nothing. Use this thread to discuss all the pregame and first quarter action. And don't forget to vote in the CGB Insta-Poll. GO BEARS!

And if it doesn’t end early will I get the Cal game over in Seattle!? ARGH!

DJ Holt getting the start over Mychal Kendricks
One notable starting lineup change. D.J. Holt is going to start at outside iinebacker in place of Mychal Kendricks. Holt started getting reps on the outside during the week and defensive Bob Gregory had said he would start playing more at that spot, but never said he would start. Not sure if the decision is because Kendricks missed some practice time during the bye week with a shoulder injury, or simply a coach’s decision. Kendricks practiced without limitation this week. He leads the Pac-10 in tackles.

im not sure what I just saw
was it…a kickoff….out of the back of the endzone???
Out of curiosity
How much would a longer running start help kick offs? If our kickers get to a higher speed before kicking the ball, can’t they impart more force on the ball?
There’s a a limit how much additional running would help. I’d have to guess that however much Tavecchio or whomever is running is already the optimal amount, since they could run all day if they wanted.

Man I hate watching Cal games on TV
I get nervous and started pacing the room. Even if we’re doing excellent I get the urge to turn it off. I can’t stand the tension.
I’d rather watch in the stadium where I’m forced to stand lol
In other words, Go Bears!
haha
know exactly what you mean.

I try but my computer is in the dining room and my tv is in living room
But I’m pacing around anyway
In other words, Go Bears!
Computer is in the top floor for me. TV is in the basement.

Yes, it is much harder to watch on TV. Sometimes during basketball games I get so nervous I have to stop watching for a few minutes

I'm watching on ESPN360, so I just saw the Riley touchdown to Jones
I think Avinash, HydroTech, or someone else who has regularly watched KR and studied his passing efficiency should look into this: Compare KR’s passing efficiency on rollout or PA plays to just three step drops.
I started thinking about this after watching Jonathon Crompton play out of his mind against UGA and it got me wondering about Riley, a guy with similar physical gifts and similar problems with accuracy. It’s almost as though Crompton/Riley are only able to use their physical abilities when they’re not stationary because the physical movement keeps their mind anchored.
Mmmmm…Riley doesn’t really throw accurately out of bootlegs against USC. Maybe it was better earlier this season, I’ll have to check.

I’ve been under the impression that Riley should roll out more.
But Riley’s best pass is the deep ball heave when he has protection. No question about that.

Just anecdotally, Riley doesn’t strike me as any more accurate while rolling out. Could be wrong, though.

designed rollouts or scrambles? Cal doesn’t really do three step drops that much.

I’m curious to see how Dom Edwards is. Or if switching Schwartz and Tepper would do anything
