Onto Cal news: Alex Morgan owns Oregon
After a ticky-tack foul set up a free kick from about 24 yards out on the right side, the lefty bent the ball around the wall at head level with a diving line drive that somehow snuck into the goal between the near post and the Oregon keeper for the 1-0 lead.
“Cami (Senemar) and I have been working this whole week together on set-pieces, so when I got that shot, I was ready to take it,” Morgan said. “That goal was such a relief because we were so pumped to come on this trip and we wanted to show everybody that we can still be a great team even with our numbers down and the situation that has been going on.”
After halftime, it was the Ducks (8-4-1, 0-2 in the Pac-10), who surprised the No. 21 Bears (8-3-1, 2-0) with a goal of their own two minutes and 46 seconds in. Oregon’s Teresa Bowns was given perhaps a little too much space, as she swung one off the inside of the far post from nearly the same spot as Morgan’s strike.
The tie didn’t last long, though, as Morgan found an opening down the middle after the restart, causing Ducks’ keeper Cody Miles to challenge the forward with a sliding tackle at the top of the box.

Cal volleyball splits the Washington home series.
Looks like Katie Dowd is analyzing these games more!
Cal proved that it was better from the loss to the Huskies by handily defeating No. 25 Washington State in straight sets (25-14, 25-19, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon at Haas Pavilion. The victory prevented the No. 15-ranked Bears from starting conference play with a record of 1-4.
“Our defense was a lot better,” freshman hitter Correy Johnson said. “We were much more aggressive blocking, much more aggressive going for balls. We didn’t let balls drop without effort.”

Jeff Cosgriff with the hat-trick, men's soccer beats Oregon State 3-1
It all began in the backline, as Bears freshman Chris Ortega chipped a ball across the field to midfielder Hector Jimenez, who beat his defender to collect it. And as the junior’s lofted cross floated towards the back post, Jeff Cosgriff was there to head it home.
The goal gave the Bears back their two-goal lead with 10 minutes left, emphatically damaging Oregon State’s hopes of a comeback.
It was particularly special for Cosgriff, who added to his domination of the scoresheet by tacking on his third of the day.

Finishes second place to USC in SoCal Invitational
The Bears (11-4, 0-1 in the MPSF) certainly did that on their way to a second-place tournament finish at UC Irvine yesterday, handing top-ranked Stanford (12-1, 1-0) its first loss of the year in yesterday’s 10-8 semifinal upset.
“It was the best effort we’ve seen all year,” senior co-captain Spencer Warden said. “We played really well together and we won.”
After struggling to capitalize on offensive opportunities in past weeks, Cal jumped out to a 4-2 halftime lead against the Cardinal. Consecutive goals early in the fourth quarter put the Bears at a 9-6 advantage they didn’t squander.

Cal Field Hockey triumphs over their I-80 non-rivals
When the Cal field hockey team’s offensive penalty corners fall into place, so does the rest of its attack.
The Bears have won every match in which they converted a corner, and Saturday’s 6-1 win over UC Davis at Maxwell Field was no different.
“We’ve been emphasizing second balls on corners,” Megan Psyllos said. “We can’t just put in all on the first shot. Rebounds are just as important.”
Penalty corners were the missing factor on the road, but the Bears earned more corners (15) and shots on goal (17) in Saturday’s game than on their entire three-game road trip.
And that production was due, in large part, to sophomore Erin Magill’s in-game adjustments.
“I called Erin (Magill) over during a corner said, ‘Watch their keeper,’” Onstead said. “She looked back at me and said, ‘Oh, she stays up.’”

Young faces stepping up for Cal men's swimming
In Cal’s 156-139 victory over the Rainbow Warriors on Friday, seven different swimmers won events. Freshman Tom Shields, the American high school record-holder in the 200-yard freestyle, claimed his first dual meet victory in his signature event with a time of 1:40.46.
Fellow freshman Ben Hinshaw also had a first-rate showing in his debut for Cal. Clearly in the lead from the beginning, Hinshaw won his first dual meet event on Saturday in the 1,000-yard freestyle.
“It was pretty exciting,” Hinshaw said of his first victory, adding that being able to make an impact right away was critical to him.
Clocking in at 1:48.60, freshman Andre Blythe claimed the 200 fly against Hawaii and dominated the 100 fly the next day. In the 100-yard backstroke against Pacific, freshman Austin Brown took his first win as well.

Cal women's doubles tennis falls short
The highly touted Cal women’s tennis doubles team of sophomore Jana Juricova and junior Mari Andersson was unsuccessful in their bid for the women’s doubles title during the ITA All-American Championships this week.
Juricova and Andersson held the top seed in the tournament, hosted at the Riviera Tennis Club in Los Angeles from Tuesday through Saturday, but were ousted, 8-6, in the first round by Georgia’s No. 11-ranked team of Irina Falconi and Amanda McDowell.
The No. 2 ranked doubles team still had an opportunity to win the back draw of the tournament in the consolation bracket, and was able to win their first match against Arizona State’s team of Micaela Hein and Kelcy McKenna.
In the semifinals, however, Juricova and Andersson were on the losing end once again, this time in another close match against the No. 15-ranked team of Kristy Frilling and Kali Krisik of Notre Dame. The Bears were able to push the Irish team to an 8-8 tie, before losing the tiebreaker, 10-7, and eventually losing the match 9-8 (7).

Cal men's golf hosting tournament at Fairfax, California Mon & Tue--you can follow scoring at golfstat.com
The momentum already seems to be building in favor of the Bears, as junior Eric Mina was awarded the honor of Pac-10 Player of the Month in September. Mina’s fall season thus far appears unrivaled, with a 69.6 stroke average in the ninth month.
“I am very pleased with Eric and believe he deserves this accolade,” Desimone said.
Mina’s most impressive feat came at the Spartan Classic, where he fired a 10-under (67, 67, 69) to win the event.
In addition to Mina, Stephen Hale, Chad Vivolo and Michael Weaver will be competing in the field this week. Fifteen teams will compete at the Invitational, including San Diego State, the winner of the event in 2007. Cal has won the Invitational three of the past six years.

How would you rank Pac-10 teams at the present moment?
My Opinion:
Elite: USC (1) closely followed by Oregon (2)
large gap
Better: Oregon St (3) then Cal (4)
Small Gap
Middle: Stanford (5) then Arizona (6) then UCLA (7) and Washington (7)
Very Small Gap
Arizona State (9)
Large Gaping Gap
Washington State (10)
I’m not sure how you can justify Cal in the Better gap when we are 0-2 in the conference. And, last I checked, Arizona beat Oregon State. IMO, those 7 teams between USC/Oregon and WSU are indistinguishable. If any of those teams deserves a bump it is UW that has beaten USC and Arizona.

Horrible luck tho, but the fact remains that Foles didn’t throw a good ball… he missed badly and he was punished for it. He was punished excessively, but punished for a mistake he made.
Like I said in the Pac-10 recap, the issue I had was that Arizona was throwing the ball with 3 minutes left. Run. The. Ball.

I’d agree with the transitive property in college football if it actually played out that way. There’s just too much else going on in the college game to accept the “A beat B beat C” argument (excluding the most obvious cases, where the top team is having a stellar season or the bottom team is having an especially shitty one).

What a surprise, Gary Danielson wants an all-SEC title game
Sheesh. I love how he immediately puts a 1-loss SEC team above a 1-loss ACC/Big 10/Pac-10 team.

by Avinash Kunnath on Oct 12, 2009 9:35 AM PDT reply actions
Yeah, I thought it was insane that they would allow him to actually put this up as a graphic…but then you realize that CBS has no interest in the BCS, so what do they have to lose. But the idea that anyone would state at this point in the season that any one-loss SEC team should be ahead of USC or VT is pretty out there in my opinion. What if for example, Alabama losses to LSU by 50 and misses the SEC title game – they still belong in the title game against Florida assuming Texas loses a game?
by Tedfordisgod on Oct 12, 2009 9:40 AM PDT up reply actions
Virginia Tech's case would be very strong, esp with their one loss to Bama
If the Pac-10 has a bunch of bowl eligible teams, the winner of USC-Oregon also would be in very good standing too.

As I said above, they’re all beatable, including Bama and Florida. Heck, I don’t think there is a truly dominant team in college football this year.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
Florida's last tough game this season
Is at South Carolina.
And I really don’t think they’re beatable by most teams because their defense is soooo good. Not as good as USC 2008, but first in scoring and passing defense is damned impressive.

doesn’t the game have to be televised by someone for that to work?
also, does that severely limit what sort of instant replay the refs can use?
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
I think all games are videotaped, regardless of whether or not they are broadcasted.
Act all day, dance all night. Let's get it poppin'... I'm in Bombay, trick!
that is what i thought, obviously the number of camera angles and quality drops, but i think it is still videotaped.
I thought ESPN360 just simulcast the events, so you’d still need a broadcast to work with. That’s why the commercials black out the feed, since the advertisers would be getting much more exposure than they paid for if the commercials were broadcast on the online feed.

Libraries to stay open 24/7 during finals, thanks to donors.
BERKELEY — A donation from two Cal parents will allow Doe and Moffitt libraries, the campus hub of late-night studying during finals, to remain open 24 hours a day during the final exams period this academic year. This reverses the painful budget decision made earlier this semester to limit the hours of the two libraries during finals.

Does anyone seriously think we are in danger of missing a bowl game? We are still 3-2 with the toughest part of our schedule over. Furthermore, Riley at his worst is Ayoob, when Ayoob was at the helm Cal still went 9-4 behind a strong run game.
Well, we need three more wins (at least), and there’s only one gimmie left on the schedule. If we can beat UCLA this weekend, all my doubts will be dispelled. Lose, and the death spiral towards mediocrity could begin again.

I haven’t seen many teams run the wildcat successfully, so that was fascinating to watch, especially the way the Dolphins switched personnel groups every play while running the two minute drill. Spectacular coaching.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Spectacular blocking as well. Miami basically took the concept to it’s logical end: the Wildcat allows you to have up to 10 players blocking for your runner, so why don’t we use all 10 of them, or near enough to it? From there the o-line and blocking backs just punched the Jets in the mouth repeatedly. I’d love Cal to take this attitude to our direct snap packages.

Problem is our blocking has not been our strongest suit this situation, especially at fullback. Two of the Wildcat plays against USC were blown up because Holley spent a lot of time whiffing. That fullback is really crucial in this scheme.

Yeah, the thought definitely occurred to me, but on the other hand putting Best in a 4 or 5 wide shotgun set is just kind of “huh? really?” Guess it doesn’t work that poorly, I wouldn’t be surprised if our direct snap YPA over the past two games is better than our quarterback set YPA, but I’d like to see Cal really explore what the team can do sans-quarterback.
Then again, that’s always the rub in college. There’s a finite number of reps and right now Riley needs to get a whole hell of a lot of them. C’est la vie.
