DBD 1.09.09 Cal is #26 in the AP, #25 in Coaches
As racsan points out, we get some recognition from the coaches, but just not enough from the AP.

You might like Sagarin more; it places Cal 16th and has 5 Pac-10 teams in its top 25.
Well, the CGB blogpoll might have to extend some bias for the Golden Bears in comparison to the coaches and the mainstream media. Carp will certainly be outraged considering where he placed them.
Does Cal's ranking look good to you in either poll? Will it have any bearing on our regular season ranking next year?
In general, which poll do you prefer, AP, Coaches or Sagarin? Any other wrinkles stick out of the polls (Utah got SIXTEEN 1st place VOTES?) that you take umbrage with?
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

I don’t think our final ranking will have much of an effect on our preseason ranking next year. The preseason rankings have never made much sense to me (remember when UCLA was #14 in last year’s preseason?). With the level of talent we’re returning in both offense and defense, I wouldn’t be surprised to see us around 10-15 in next year’s preseason rankings. However, without all the hype Best received in the last few games of the season, we’d probably be on the fringes of the preseason rankings.
My best guess is that we’ll be assessed like the pre-2006 team was- an up-and-down team the previous year who should be stronger due to the abundance of returning starters on both offense and defense, including a few star players. Although we lose some key players, the gains in experience should give this team more stability and consistency than the 2008 team. The defense should be about the same (a slight drop off initially which will probably be made up over the season) and the offense should be much more versatile because our passing game will (that’s right, Kevin, will) greatly improve due to a clear starter and a more experienced group of receivers. The 2006 team started the season as #9 (that didn’t last long) and I’m guessing the 2009 team will be toward the edge of the top 15.
Also, JO’s blog received a makeover. It got rid of the Nate banner and now has two sections: football and basketball.

The only big issue is that BCS rankings are affected by preseason rankings, so I just want to make sure we get hosed a few spots and get dropped down in case we need an at-large bid to get to where we want to be.
Of course that’s thinking seven steps ahead, but ’04 reminded me to think of the big picture. Hopefully the Jet is enough to bring us to the top.

agreed with Bears Necessity…this is how the SEC/Big12 do it:
- Lofty preseason ranking for 4-5 best teams – indeed, these idiots look back at where they put everyone at the end of 2008 and then see who’s leaving before making their pick.
- fluff OOC schedule makes them 6-0 (or so) early…rankings climb
- conference losses don’t hurt so bad because of these untested but generous rankings
- disappointing bowl season (relative to the hoopla) but at this point it’s too late to do much of anything.

In fact, Florida is the national champion not because the BCS or Thom Brennaman or Federal Express say so, but because it was the best team in the country. It lost by a point to a team that schooled Texas Tech, but it also held the highest scoring team in NCAA history to two touchdowns. It may not have been the team Florida should have played – that should have been Utah, or as a fallback position, Texas, but none of that was Florida’s fault.
It is folk wisdom that the BCS determines not the champion, but who finishes second. This time, the system got second place wrong. More teams were hosed than rewarded, which is a high number even for the BCS – usually only one team gets jobbed.
First place, though, isn’t the scene of the crime this time. After all, nobody thought of Utah as a potential rival until it beat Alabama – a team Florida beat more convincingly because it didn’t have Harvin.
This will not satisfy Utah fans, who had the best argument, or BCS fifth columnists, who still don’t get the real reason the BCS exists (so that the NCAA can maintain unchallenged control of the football industry) or why it thrives (because all the anti-BCS bitching is the BCS’ best reason for living).
But look at it this way – in 237 days, the hamster wheel of rage that is college football starts up again. Florida got a crystal football from a bankrupt trophy company, but Utah won a new national constituency. In the longer term, the two may turn out to be equally valuable.

Bad defense + terrible shooting did them in that day. They were sloppy early, then fought like hell to get the deficit down to 11 at the half, and then were soundly put away in the second. By far their worst performance of the year.
Missouri’s pretty good, though. Also, the Pac-10 is way down this year.

It was an early season game in a pressure environment. The kids were still in the process of learning Monty’s system and coming together as a team. You know, it takes a bit of time to shrug off the chains of the Braun philosophy.
If the two played now I am sure the result would be different. Oh, Cal might now win, but they also don’t lose by 27.
The beauty of college basketball is that a couple of losses are not the end of the world, especially early in the season, on the road, against a solid team.
I’d save my concern for if this team loses by 27 to U$C late in the season.
Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

HUGE NEWS! HUGE, INEVITABLE NEWS!
BERKELEY – An extensive geoarchaeological investigation commissioned by the University of California has found no evidence of prehistoric Native American artifacts or human remains beneath the construction site for the campus’s new Student-Athlete High Performance Center.
The full report on the investigation’s findings was released Thursday by William Self Associates, one of the nation’s leading consulting firms on matters related to archaeological and historical preservation.
According to the report, the “debris observed in the field and noted during lab analysis is believed to have been associated with the construction of Memorial Stadium in 1923 or with private residences that were…located within and around the project area.”
The report’s findings support the conclusions of the firm’s earlier, comprehensive review of California state records and archival material: research that found no substantive indications that unique or important prehistoric artifacts or human remains exist beneath the construction site.
The Student-Athlete High Performance Center will provide safe and suitable training, medical and academic facilities for more than 400 student athletes, coaches and staff members associated with 13 of Cal’s 27 intercollegiate teams.
Cal bball wins:
PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) -Patrick Christopher scored 22 points and California held off Washington State 57-50 on Thursday night for its eighth straight victory.
Jamal Boykin added 12 points for California (14-2, 3-0 Pac-10), which didn’t put the game away until the final minutes.
Taylor Rochestie scored 19 points for Washington State (8-6, 0-2), which lost its third straight.
Washington State’s shooting woes continued, as the Cougars shot just 37 percent. They have topped 55 points and reached 50 percent shooting only once – in a win over Montana State – in their past six games
Cal shot 50 percent, but was held seven points below its season average by the nation’s best defense, which allows only 50 points per game.
After Washington State tied the score at 28 early in the second, Boykin scored four of Cal’s next five baskets as the Bears built a 39-33 lead.
That lead stood up most of the second half. Rochestie hit a pair of baskets for WSU to pull to 44-40, but Christopher’s 3-pointer opened it up again. After Rochestie scored again, Christopher hit two more baskets as Cal took its biggest lead at 51-42 with just over 4 minutes left.
Womens bball also wins:
BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — Senior forward Ashley Walker had 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 13 California to a 68-45 win over Washington State on Thursday night.
Walker, the Pac-10’s leading scorer, had her 38th double-double and moved into second place on the Bears’ career scoring list with 1,774 points. She scored Cal’s final 10 points in the first half and finished 11-for-18 from the floor while leading the Bears to their fourth consecutive win.
California (12-2, 3-0) never trailed and led by as much as 25 in beating Washington State for the eighth straight time. The Bears haven’t lost to the Cougars since Jan. 27, 2005.
“They came out and kept it close,” said Cal head coach Joanne Boyle. “They did a lot of things to create havoc. I thought we did a good job, in particular, in the last four minutes of the game, something we really needed to improve on.”
Anger is All-American puntstud:
BERKELEY – California punter Bryan Anger was named to the Freshman All-America team by the Football Writers Association of America Thursday, adding to his long list of accolades for the 2008 season.
In addition to the FWAA honor, Anger was selected to first-team Freshman All-America squads by the Sporting News, College Football News and rivals.com. He was also chosen second-team All-Pac-10 and a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award, which is presented to the top punter in the nation.
A redshirt-freshman from Camarillo, Calif., Anger averaged 43.1 yards per punt this past season, ranking 18th in the country and third in the Pac-10. He was named Pac-10 Special Teams Player of the Week after averaging 47.4 ypp vs. Arizona State with three kicks landing inside the 20-yard-line. Anger later set a school single-game record when he averaged 60.2 ypp vs. Stanford. His 76-yard punt vs. Cardinal was the fourth longest in Cal history, and he added a 75-yarder later in the game.
Swimmers receive honors:
WALNUT CREEK, CALIF. – California sophomore Nathan Adrian has been named the Pac-10 Swimmer of the Month for December, while sophomore diver Tom Henninger was named the Pac-10 Men’s Diver of the Month for the second month in a row, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Thursday, Jan. 8.
Adrian, a 2008 Olympic gold medalist from Bremerton, Wash., helped the No. 4-ranked Cal men swimmers (2-0) win the Dec. 4-6 Husky Invitational in Seattle by being involved in seven victories. On Dec. 4 he won the 50 free in a Cal school record and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 18.94 (old record was 19.01 set by Duje Draganja in 2005) and also helped the Bears win the 200 free and 400 medley relays. On Dec. 5 Adrian won the 100 fly with a time of 47.47 and led off Cal’s winning 800 free relay. Finally on Dec. 6, he won the 100 free with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 41.83 (fourth fastest time in Cal history) and swam the second leg of the Bears’ winning 400 free relay, which had an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 2:50.15.

Sagarin
The “computers” have a lot of detractors. And there is no question that early in the season, the algorithm-calculated rankings can be awfully screwy. But once again, at season’s end, Sagarin gets it right—or at least more right than the likes of Wilner.
That said, a closer look at the Sagarin rankings reveals just how inexact this whole “science” is. Recall that he has two systems, one that he seems to prefer (PREDICTOR) and one that is used by the BCS because it doesn’t account for margin of victory (ELO-CHESS). And look how different his two Top 5s are:
Predictor
1. Florida
2. USC
3. Oklahoma
4. Texas
5. Penn State
E-C (BCS)
1. Utah
2. Florida
3. Texas
4. Oklahoma
5. USC
Utah is #1 in one ranking, and just #10 in the other. Likewise, Penn State is #5 and #13. The results for our Bears are more consistent, though, at #16 and #18.
One last note: despite a spotless bowl record, Sagarin still has the Pac-10 ranking only fourth among the conferences. Here is his final Top Six:
1. SEC
2. Big 12
3. ACC
4. Pac 10
5. Big East
6. Big 10
It’s also worthy of note that Sagarin has the Mountain West, at #7, much closer to the BCS6 than to eighth-place C-USA.
Reviewing everything above, it’s clear the “computers” aren’t perfect, and are probably just as flawed as the human polls. And it’s also clear, once again, that only a playoff would satisfy most of us. But if we’re looking to tweak the system, then perhaps the best single improvement that could be made would be to add a seventh BCS conference—either the Mountain West as is, or some sort of new hybrid that includes the premier football programs from the Mountain West and the WAC. Why? because the so-called BCS busters always come from the West, and the system is currently set up so that there are significantly fewer BCS schools west of the Rockies, per capita, than there are in the East. I don’t have the numbers before me, but I did calculate them once, and the differences are striking.
Go Bears!

i hate reporting on extremely unsubstantiated rumors, but a post on BI says that someone on the Notre Dame board posted that they had spoken to either Kennard or a close friend of his (i forget which) and that Kennard was a silent cal commit, based primarily on the fact that he’d get to compete right away if he did choose cal.

I kind of like this post on Wilner’s blog. It has to do with Wilner ranking MWC over Pac10 on the basis of the 1-5 record in head to head matchups:
Warren says:
January 9th, 2009 at 10:53 am
Speaking of a MWC-Pac-10 challenge (assuming neutral sites):
Utah/USC – Could be a great game, but USC would be favored
TCU/Oregon – TCU would be a slight favorite
BYU/OSU – OSU favored
Air Force/California – Cal favored
CSU/Arizona – UA favored
UNLV/ASU – Either a tossup or ASU a slight favorite, even though UNLV won the actual game at ASU
New Mexico/Stanford – Stanford favored
Wyoming/UCLA – Tossup
SDSU/WSU – One ugly game. Probably a tossup?
So in the nine matchups the MWC would be favored in one (maybe two) while the Pac-10 would be favored in probably five games with up to three games listed as a tossup. Jon, your points don’t look very strong.

Well, using Sagarin, on a neutral field the odds would be the following, roughly:
USC/Utah: USC by 15
Oregon/TCU: TCU by 3
OSU/BYU: OSU by 6
Cal/Air Force: Cal by 12
Arizona/CSU: Arizona by 29
ASU/UNLV: ASU by 10
Stanfurd/New Mexico: Stanfurd by 9
UCLA/Wyoming: UCLA by 12
WSU/SDSU: SDSU by 2
Note, Washington’s predictor is actually higher than WSU’s and would therefore be favored by 5 over SDSU.
Also worth noting is which MWC teams played which Pac-10 teams and thus you have the discrepancy. If they played head to head according to ranking in their respective conferences, I’d be shocked if the MWC won more than 3 games, if that.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.

That was indeed classic. It was almost as good as when Oklahoma went for the touchdown of fourth down, twice, at least as good ol’ TB saw it. For at least a couple of downs there, the graphics on the screen didn’t match the words coming out of TB’s mouth. Don’t they have a spotter in the booth? Why wasn’t the director screaming in his earpiece? That telecast last night wasn’t just lame, in a Fox Sports sort of way, but it was unprofessionally poor. I think even Versus might have done a better job.
Maybe Fox has all its A-level talent covering the NFL this weekend?
Oh how I long for the days of Keith Jackson. Dick Enberg used to do a nice job, too, back in the day, although I think my favorite pairing for both the NFL and the Orange Bowl was Don Criqui and Bob Trumpy.

Out of curiosity, I checked in with the experts Friday morning: the Las Vegas Sports Consultants, who set the initial lines that are sent to the casino sportsbooks.
I wanted to know if they would favor Florida over all comers in all locations.
And the answer is yes, with one exception: The Trojans in SoCal.
Tony Sinisi, odds director of the LVSC, told me that if the Gators played USC in the Rose Bowl, the Trojans would open as a small favorite.
If the teams met on a true neutral field, "it would be pretty close to a pick ‘em," he added.
And if they played in Florida? The Gators would be favored by 1.5 or 2 points.
Nobody else, Sinisi said, would be better than a field goal underdog against the mighty Gators.

Greatwood not taking Cal Poly job…I wonder if Tedford offers him the “Michalkdajsfkadfk Package” (OLine/asst head coach)…24 years and “OL CoY” sounds good to me. Plus, T-bred says he has expertise in non-spread offenses:
Former Portland State coach Tim Walsh will reportedly be introduced today as the new head coach at Cal Poly, which interviewed UO associate head coach Steve Greatwood for the position Tuesday.
"Whatever the circumstances were, it didn’t turn out my way," Greatwood said in a phone interview Thursday evening. "But that’s OK. I’ve got a good job already."
Greatwood recently completed his 24th season as an Oregon assistant. He will be honored as national offensive line coach of the year at next week’s American Football Coaches Association convention in Nashville.

-Q: How did Anthony Randolph play?
-NELSON: Very well.
-Q: Before the game you talked about him not being NBA-ready. Didn’t he look ready tonight?
-NELSON: Yeah, he did very well tonight.
-Q: Does that mean he might do well other nights?
-NELSON: Look it, I think what you guys need to do is just let me coach my team. Let me bring these guys along the way I see fit. That’s what they hired me for. And stop worrying about a 19-year-old kid.
Because you know what? It’s not good for him, either. Because he takes things for granted and he’s got to work his way in. He’s got work to do. He played well tonight. This is the way we expect him to play. This is the way we hope that he plays.
He’s been practicing like this for three days. And we’re going to take it and go with it. OK?
But he did very well. I’m proud of him.

interesting article on how the riot missed it’s mark…
A rider boycott would have struck the transit agency’s board of directors in a much more direct way than street guerrilla theater outside one of its stations followed by an assault on the city.
Protesters missed their intended targets this time and wound up beating up the wrong entity instead.

“It’s going to be interesting to see how that plays out and I think that as we watch that we will perhaps be able to prove that there is a class issue here also that was such a factor in the scrutiny of my candidacy versus, say, the scrutiny of what her candidacy may be,” Palin said.

Should I be shot?
After winning my third NC and 4th BCS bowl with Cal in my NCAA2009 Football dynasty, I took a job offer (as Coach Tedford!) to be Notre Dame’s next head coach. Why would I leave, after 4 years? Well, I’ve prolly played like 30 seasons as Cal’s HC in my 08/09 dynasties. I was getting tired of getting 15 5-star and 10 4-star recruits every year. But even moreso, Iiked the idea of scheduling 12 regular season games. I also kinda like the fight song (don’t hate me), the simplicity of the stadium and unis (oh jesus), and the fact that not even Weis could bring them back. Plus, I kinda wanted to see if I could beat the team I formed, especially the Jesus in Cleats QB I created (Mike Pawlawski). This game is coming up next. I’ve scheduled 12 ranked opponents, with the highest ranking being # 18 and I’ve got a 6/6 home/road split. I’ve got the best SOS anywhere.
Has anyone ever left their dynasty team before? Also, how do I make it harder when I’ve mastered the game?

I played 6 seasons as Cal in NCAA 09
First season I went undefeated and beat OSU in the Rose Bowl
2-5th season: Undefeated (with a SOS of A- or higher) and four NCs (I won an award for back to back NC, triple, four in a row, lol)
Jahvid Best won Heisman in 2010 (he came back for senior), and I recruited this two star RB called Eric Timbers who won the NC in 2011. Beau Sweeney re-wrote record books but lost to a QB I created (but unfortunately went to LSU) called Gordon Freeman. I faced Freeman in the NC and crushed him with my All-American, award winning Freshman LB called Ceaser Flavian (lmao). My punter is an All-american ray guy winner called John Paul (I didn’t create him!). I also unlocked the achievement for Mr February as I had the highest recruiting class in a season. And the pecking order in the Pac-10 was Cal, UCLA, USC, Oregon for some reason. UCLA always faced me ranked #3 or #4 and I always killed them (never let them score more than 7 on me, I never score less than 30). My best game was against USC at Memorial where I had to overcome a 30 point deficit in the 4th Q to win. Beau Sweeney passed for 700yds and 5TDs in that game!
So needless to say I got bored while halfway through my 6th season so I started a new dynasty (this time on Heisman difficulty) as Bowling Green. I’m trying to get the achievement of taking a non-BCS school into a BCS conference. I went undefeated (including a wild MAC championship game where the two teams combined for 60 points in the 4th Q with three KOs returned for TDs). And now I have to face USC in the Rose Bowl (wtf why I wanted to play a different bowl dammit!). The NC is BYU against OSU wtf…
In other words, Go Bears!

For some reason, I’m really good as a special team KR/PR (always win Returner of the Year) and I’m really good as a DT/DE. I can’t play LB or DB whatsoever. In fact, I bet I might lose if I had to play DB (I get BURNED).
taking a non-BCS team to the BCS game sounds fun…did you have a tough OOC schedule? U get 4 OOC games or only 3?

I’m good as HB and LB. I’m ok as DT/DE and not so hot as QB. In fact most of the time I’m a run first offense with an occasional Play Action tossed in. And it turns out my HBs lead the team in receiving yds followed by the TEs. My team strengths are always (in this order) HB, CB, LB, FS/SS, C.
And no I didn’t have a tough OOC for this season. I wanted to win, get some prestige, get some JUCO and blue chip recruits and then start tackling hard OOC games. This season my cupcake OOCs for Bowling Green were: San Jose State (winless), Baylor (1 win), Stanford (4 wins), and Wyoming (4 wins). In fact I only faced 3 teams with a winning record (NIU, Miami (OH), and Eastern Michigan). I have a feeling I’m gonna get schooled by USC. I’ll post a pic with the result of the bowl game after I play it if you want lol. Surprisingly I’m ranked 3 in the nation
I’m decent as a PR/KR (though as a PR I tend to fumble too many times) and occasionally break open the big ones. I’m better at returning onside kickoffs for TDs (lol). My strategy in KOs is to recruit a kicker that can consistently kick it out of the endzone because my kickoff coverage is terrible. I must be channeling Alamar.
In other words, Go Bears!

how u return onside kicks for TDs?
Also, try kicking right down the middle or pop-up kicks (sometimes they fair catch it) if the KR unit is really good.
How’s recruiting going? Do you have to grossly recruit 3/4/5 star guys in order to land ’em?

You guys can stand NCAA 09? I was thinking about buying it but decided not to after hearing how the new gameplay tweaks this year have basically killed as semblances of defense. All i read about are how there is no defense, no coverage, no sacks, and it’s all offense. What do you guys think?

There are a LOT of problems with it, but...
I’m addicted. I suck at online so I don’t play it much (just dynasty) but it’s kind of fun.
And I disagree about Defense. Most of the time my defense (and running game) is what helps me win. Yes coverage is terrible (and you can pretty much complete 5 yd passes every single down) but run D is excellent (especially if you recruit some killer LBs). And for me since I invest a lot of time in making my LB corps and D-line great I get a lot of sacks and QB hurries (which most of the time lead to incomplete or INTs).
As for offense it was actually harder than 07 for me for a while. But now I can usually get my HB to run for 100+ every game. Passing still gives me fits.
But there are A LOT of problems still with this game. Playing contain is still pretty impossible. Zone is only useful if you have ball hawking LBs. CBs must have springs in their legs and eyes in the back of their heads because if they’re playing man with a WR they’ll wait till the ball comes close to them, jump in the air 5 feet and slap it down. INTs thankfully are less than last year but it still can be annoying. There are A LOT more fumbles this time around (especially when returning punts IMO – I fair catch more often than not because of this).
Of course there’s still a whole bunch of idiotic glitches (esp. in regards to commentary which btw is now annoying the shit out of me) and HBs tend to stutter.
Also a funny glitch I noticed with my Cal dynasty: I always play ASU at home. I can never play at Tempe (it doesn’t let me change conference games).
DBs sometimes let their assignments run by them. The O-line sometimes stand and let the DT/DE’s run right by them and occasionally they don’t block the HBs/WRs on screens yet don’t cover the QB so that ends up being a broken play.
In other words, Go Bears!

D…it’s weird…I can’t find a team that can stop me, but I play unbelievable D for some reason. Maybe I should adjust my sliders…
The safeties can come up and stop the run sometimes…DB’s break unrealistically fast in zone coverage.
My success on D comes on my ability to get a great jump off the snap as a Dlineman…irregardless of a run/pass play. If I were to play DB or LB and have to cover a receiver I’d be very poor and the D would march down the field.
Key to PR: Choose either PR L or PR R as the play. If ball is on the left hash, choose PR L and vice versa. When the punt comes, get to either sideline as fast as possible. Use your fastest player (hopefully he has a decent carry rating).
HB screens are very ineffective for me…WR screens are ok…hard to ever “break it” on these plays.
Crossing routes, digs, daggers, and slants all work well. Any “PA” play works pretty well if you get it off in time.

For onside I’m not the one kicking it (I’ve yet to recover my own onside). As soon as I grab the onside I run left (away from the huge pile of players). Sometimes you disengage and if your player is fast enough you can run around the edge and return it for a TD.
I’ve yet to have a CPU fair catch my KO. I’ve had some of them fumble it in the endzone for a touchback though.
I do grossly recruit some 5*s but after my first NC at Cal it became easy. Most of the top players wanted to play for Cal so I didn’t have to try as hard. For example in the season I was playing before I got bored I had an OOC game @ #4 Texas and I crushed them 41-14. After that week I had two 5*s (MLB and ATH) along with a 4* (G) commit and I barely recruited them (in that I offered scholarship and pitched one or two things).
But with Bowling Green it is hard. I had three 4*s that never even put me on their top-10 despite me talking to them for 45+ every week. But it’s easier to land JUCO at a smaller school than it is to land true HS recruits.
Also I have a strong feeling that UCLA alumni made this game and made Cal bad. This season where I played with Bowling Green, Cal had 3 wins: Stanfurd, Oregon St, WSU. UCLA somehow was third in the conference. And after the first season UCLA somehow manages to end up in the top-10 every fucking season and if I’m not controlling Cal, Cal loses. It’s irritating.
In other words, Go Bears!

interesting…I’ll let you know if Cal is able to maintain the dynasty I built…
the kickoff returns are unrealistic…it’s too easy for either the user or CPU to break it.
they should have a “pay the recruit” option…it would make it more realistic!

California’s public universities today halted all construction – on projects that are financed by bonds. Since the Student-Athlete High-Performance center is being privately financed, it is not affected. You can all step off the ledge now.
The announcement also said some high-ranking administrators might not get their bonuses this year. But that shouldn’t affect Jeff Tedford as he is technically faculty, not an administrator.

He’s got $C at 6, Oregon at 12, and Cal at 15:
15. Cal: All the Bears need is decent quarterback play (and a healthy fall for Jahvid Best), and they’ll have a first-rate season.
To me, this is a little weird. How could “first rate” be the Sun Bowl? I’m not so sure Oregon’s ahead of Cal at the end of 2009…

….but those “what in the hell” games are an annual cal tradition. you know it’s not a cal team unless they lose at least one game they “should’ve” won.

Grading JO's interview skills
(Note: Now that the blog has separate Okanes and Wilner tabs, we’ll no longer use the name of the journalist in the titles)
This was not what Alex Mack bargained for when he decided to return to Cal for his senior season.
Mack thought he would be returning to a veteran and skilled interviewer, one that would rank among the best in the country. Then he watched fellow senior Mike Tepper suffer a season-ending interview in the spring. Once the season started, he watched starting guard Chris Guarnero suffer a softball Q&A and tackle Chet Teofilo a ridiculously useless interview. The only other senior on the line, guard Noris Malele, also had no new information at this time.
It all kind of makes Mack’s preseason goal of not allowing any bad interviews the whole season kind of laughable. Mack was only half-serious when he made the statement, but it demonstrates how confident he was in his fellow linemen before all of the interviews took their toll.
Considering the beat-up nature of the unit, Cal’s offensive line did a respectable job this season. Certainly, there were mind-number questions against USC and Oregon State, but those also were two of the worst journalists the Bears talked to. The unit still helped running back Jahvid Best type at 1,580 wpm, the second-best mark in school history (Best’s average of 131.67 sentences per minute ranks higher than JO).
With JO anchoring the middle, the Bears automatically are going to grade out pretty well. JO arguably was the best interviewer in the country this season (he was a third team All-American) and may go in the first round of the NFL journalist draft in April. Wilner was much-improved when he was healthy and ended up being an All-Pac-10 second team pick.
2008 INTERVIEWING: B-
(Note, I have no idea where I’m going with this).
I have no new information on that at this time.

In a rush right now...
But Charles Ragland is now a Bear… He’s the 6’8 former basketball stud from Colordao who has only been playing ball for 2 years (1 year at LT, where he’s projected)
And it’s unofficial, but word on the Rivals board is that Steve Marshall (former Browns O-Line coach) has accepted the job… HUGE hire getting him over WAC or MWC coaches. Find the link to his bio in yesterday’s DBD. GREAT RESUME

I appreciate anyone that can make me laugh – Whether it is at my expense or not makes no difference to me.
As for the reason why I hated doing it – it was not the content of the message, but the one that delivered it.

regardless of who becomes the o-line coach…I’m impressed with the candidates that are being considered. All sound like coaches with LOTS of oline experience and have their own particular recruiting regions.

From the SF Comicle
Harbaugh’s status in limbo as recruits visit
ith approximately 30 recruits gathered on campus this weekend for official visits, Stanford football coach Jim Harbaugh has not signed his contract extension and there is an Internet report that he interviewed with the New York Jets on Thursday.
Harbaugh’s interview for the Jets head coaching job was reported on NationalFootballPost.com by analyst and co-founder Mike Lombardi. Harbaugh’s agent, Jack Bechta, is another co-founder of the Web site.

Interesting. Depending on whether one thinks that Harbaugh is a good coach or not, Harbaugh leaving Stanfurd could be a good or bad. If you think he’s good, then it’s good that he’s leaving. However, regardless of whether he is good or bad, there is a chance that Stanfurd might bring in someone even better (or who is actually good), and that could be bad.
It would make sense that Harbaugh would keep his interview with the Jets (assuming it actually happened) a secret so he could continue to recruit kids for Stanfurd. But imagine if kids asked him whether he was staying or leaving. He’d certainly say he was staying when deep down inside he knows that he wants to leave this year or next year. Recruiting is sort of dark and evil. Thankfully Tedford doesn’t really have to deal with that since Tedford is signed through 2015 or whatever; it shows he’s going to be around for a while.

He's proven to be a very effective
motivator. And is at least decent enough at coaching to have a couple major upsets in the last two years.
The Stanford job is a difficult one, and it takes a certain type of person to see good parts of it (the academics) instead of using that as a negative as to why he isn’t doing well there.
I don’t think finding that kind of coach is easy – so I’ll say Harbaugh leaving Stanford is a good thing for other Pac-10 teams in the short term at the very least.

But at the very least
Being in limbo will convince some recruits to look elsewehere. But I don’t think rooting for the misfortune of rivals is a good way to go (unless, they’re USC of course) – we should not worry about how they’re doing and just be throw the best team that we can field out there and beat them.

All good points…
But I want to see him leave because he’s been getting Furd out there to every recruit in the nation. They haven’t even been to bowl, and he already has great commits for the class of 2010… If you followed the top recruits in the country, you’d notice how Furd was one of the hats for a number of the top players from Florida, Maryland, etc,
We really don’t need another young, exuberant coach in California poaching talent that wants to come to the Bay.
