Jahvid Best 2008 Highlights

If you're on this blog, then you've seen all this before...

This video is mostly for the non-fans that are googling Jahvid like crazy right now….

1) I had to make a ton of cuts.
Fitting a single video with Jahvid’s countless highlights was much harder than I thought. In the end only about 1/4th of his highlights made it into the 500mb/10min limit.

2) No WillT or Mack
I was going to do so many cool things with this video, like highlight WillT and Mack blocking schemes… but I barely could fit the raw clips into the 10min limit… so this one is pretty simple… just clips.

couple of notes:

- the quick run up the middle, followed by a sharp left turn to the left sideline appeared as a highly successful series of events.

- After watching this, Jahvid will be even better next year. His agility (or juking ability) should become more refined and successful.

- Also, it appeared that he occasionally outran his blocks and would eventually get tackled by someone who was supposed to get blocked.

- They type of juke move or direction in which he cut was occasionally the wrong decision. As the season progressed, it looked like he was making less of those mistakes.

- I like that Riley tries to block, but I think he should just stick to some guy and take him out rather than trying to make the perfect block. If Riley starts completing more passes, then I want him the Eff away from any defenders. Steve Young was awesome when blocking on reverses.

Bravo again danzig

The Jahvid “The Jet” nickname kinda lost momentum last year. One of the announcers used it in the clips, but I don’t remember hearing it all that much later on in the season. Maybe the name Jahvid alone is becoming synonymous with “speed”.

Can’t wait to see what he does next year.

I wish there were some band highlights out there…. that checker pattern thing they did during the emerald bowl was sick.

are you kidding?

Every single pre-game and halftime is filmed by the Cal Band photo committee from the press box. Sound is questionable, but there is plenty of film out there. Check Youtube, PRD74 usually has great stuff.

I gotta say though, us fans don’t give the Cal Band enough credit. It’s gotta be exhausting playing at the pep rally, before the game, to the game, at the tailgate, before the game, during the game, after the game… and i’m pretty sure in their sleep. Then get up to do the Basketball or Volleyball game.

Our band is truly Great.

If you give me footage, I’d love to make a HL video for the layman and post it on this blog. Not sure how interested anyone else would be. I’d have fun doing it though.

Some of the craziest crowd reaction I’ve seen…you can catch it a little bit in this video somewhat delayed after each song starts.

A must-watch for anyone who didn’t see it in person.

Just watching it again gives me goosebumps.

Full band dance blocks, bandsmen dancing with the Dance Team, Kate Troescher dancing at the end. Soooo good.

It's seriously too bad that there's no building or complex around that might have a large supply of sports drinks.

by thenick on Jan 8, 2009 8:54 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

WOW.. that was awesome

My new favorite show. Really they should let loose like that more often… and man handling the dance team girls was also a nice touch. Did you notice how great the crowd reaction was during the dancing sections?

I def vote for more “interactive” dancing with the dance team.

by danzig on Jan 8, 2009 9:37 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That had to be one of my favorite parts, even though I wasn’t in any of the dance blocks.

I also really liked, during “Toxic”, the deeper, brassy section where (it’s hard to see from the video) the whole band crouches down. During practice someone brought up the “badger badger badger” internet meme, as that is what it kind of sounded like, and that’s all that I would think of when performing it.

Good times.

It's seriously too bad that there's no building or complex around that might have a large supply of sports drinks.

by thenick on Jan 8, 2009 10:19 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Also, it is totally possible to overdo dance blocks and gimmicks. Part of the greatness of this show was how unusual it was relative to the rest of the season, and how awesome every other aspect of the show was. The gate turns (where the whole field looks like pinwheels or something), in particular, look awesome from this video angle.

It's seriously too bad that there's no building or complex around that might have a large supply of sports drinks.

by thenick on Jan 8, 2009 10:21 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, there needs to be balance.

some of the shows from the early and mid 80’s also had that sort of balance. including things like a full sousa march with counter marches and hard core marching geek stunts, followed by a Stevie Wonder or latin disco medley including drum solo’s and dance steps.

Also from 2004, this show is a very good example of classic field display. The song starting at about 4:06 has one of the coolest whole field things I’ve seen.

Really liked the music in this one… counting crows sound really good as band music… rather unexpected. That crossing pattern in the middle was visually awesome.

I still like the dancing aspects of the Bounce with Me show… the crowd was way more pumped… you used the dance team, oski etc…

You’re a band guy too…? Seems this blog is full of them. Sometimes I think the most die hard Cal sports fans are band members and not football junkies like myself.

well....it's easy to be die hard fan

and I’ve seen the bears die hard. OMG.

If you really want to know if we have play calling tendancies? listen to folks in teh band during a game. see how often they call the play. tedford and staff are better than previous coaches….but (especially last year) knowing down/distance and personnel be pretty close to right on most plays.

if you can play the cow bell and read music, you can likely play the saxaphone well enough.

trumpet.

harder to be decent starting off, but once there all you need is practice on range to be really really good. The principle trumpet of the SF Symphony played at UCDavis….

I know lots of people who picked up the alto and were plenty decent after two weeks of learning fingerings. getting from there to Charlie Parker…is another question

Go Bears Go

by Rocksanddirt on Jan 7, 2009 5:05 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Trumpet easier to pick up than sax. Here’s why:

Each have an embouchure (mouth technique for those who haven’t ever played an instrument) that is equally as difficult to learn for a newbie. So, no real difference in difficulty there.

Regarding fingerings, they, of course, play the exact same notes. The trumpet has 3 pressy dealies to get those notes. The sax has like 45 million. Remembering the combination for the trumpet is, thus, quite a bit easier than the sax.

Now, getting to a medium level, I think its easier to do that on the sax. Because you can just press a pressy dealie to go from octave to octave. For trumpet, you have to develop your embouchure (btw I totes knew the spelling for this off the top of my head!!!). As a brass player myself, I know how difficult it is to develop the embouchure. Reeds instruments don’t really have that problem.

So, I disagree with your main point that its easier to pick up the sax. But in the long run, I think its the easier instrument to learn.

Please disregard the above ramblings as those of a clearly delusional fan.

www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com

by TwistNHook on Jan 7, 2009 5:17 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree.

getting the embousure developed enough to play cal songs on trumpet is much more difficult than getting it developed enough to play them on the sax. Which is what I would call the base playing level.

no one really minds if you can’t play the guitar solo section on ‘All I ever wanted’, but you do have to be able to play at least the second part to Fight.

Go Bears Go

by Rocksanddirt on Jan 7, 2009 5:19 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Your original thesis was this:

if you can play the cow bell and read music, you can likely play the saxaphone well enough.

Followed by:

just that it’s easier to learn the basics than some of the other instruments. and much much harder to master than some of the others as well.

With the first one, you are saying if you can play the cowbell and read music, you can pick up the sax. But, it is implied, probably not the trumpet. I feel I refuted that.

As to the second one, you are talking about the basics. When it comes to the basics, I again, feel its easier to pick up the basics of the trumpet than the sax.

Now, as for playing a Cal fight song that’s different than what you were previously discussing. It’s not really the basics anymore. And as I noted, I feel once you try to get to the medium level, the sax might be easier.

We might be in agreement here, but you seem to be changing your argument around a bit. Are you talking about the basic or the medium level?

Please disregard the above ramblings as those of a clearly delusional fan.

www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com

by TwistNHook on Jan 7, 2009 5:26 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I would say that being able to play fight songs is the basic level.

I could play that level of music in 7th grade, and I am no prodigy or hard core musician.

And I think that someone who can read music, and has an understanding of playing in a group (watching the director, blend, intonation, etc) can pick up the saxaphone well enough to play cal songs, really quickly. Easier than pretty much any other instrument in the Band.

I also think that it is more difficult to develop the saxaphone to the level needed for a professional player than many of the other instruments in the band.

Go Bears Go

by Rocksanddirt on Jan 7, 2009 10:01 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Clearly, the disconnect here is that you view the fight songs as basic while I see them as more moderate. I find it wildly doubtful that either side could convince hte other of the merit to their position.

Well our foes are picking up these patterns too… we can’t screen for shit. Given the talent we have at OL, size at WR and speed at RB… it’s a disgrace that we can’t block a proper screen (except during the Big Game).

One question…. what’s with some of these band girls that look like they’re wearing a uniforms 5x sizes bigger than they should be? Are you guys not allowed to tailor your uniforms?

2 things:

1) the band buys the uniforms with essentially a bell-curve of sizes, people in middle sizes have the most choice, people on the out-lying edges have less choice, and then newmen least amount of that. SO, if you happen to be the latest tiny tiny girl, you may have to settle for whats left

2) No band uniform that I know of is tailored for women. So even a small size change will look baggy because nothing fits the frame of a woman well.
