DBD 01.07.09 Let Go, TwistNHook, You've Smelled Our Hair for Too Long
I don't know about you guys, but I kinda liked not having TwistNHook around. There was a peace and quiet on the blog that has not existed since... well, never.
Comments on DBDs were generally limited to about 200 posts instead of 300+. Rishi actually got stuff done at work. The CGB had a more realistic hit count since TwistNHook wasn't constantly jumping between posts to post inane comments.
But now that TwistNHook is back, he has worn out his welcome already. Since he's been back, aside from holding us for too long to smell our hair, he has given us horrible jokes:
Q.Why did the chicken cross the road?
A. To get to the other side.
That was the first straw.
I just flew in from San Francisco..........AND BOY ARE MY ARMS TIRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That was the last straw.
TWISTNHOOK, YOU ARE NO LONGER WELCOMED ON YOUR OWN BLOG.
BTW, do you know why TwistNHook wasn't at the bowl game or the CGB tailgate???
HIS WIFE.
Twist really has his priorities screwed up. This is how your priorities should be arranged: Football before weddings & funerals, before eating, before breathing, before sudokus, and before TwistNHook's clients. Spouses come in last... perhaps just before getting the mail or something.
TwistNHook didn't even ask any of us fellow CGBers to give him score updates while he was gone. He just forgot about the game and didn't think about it like it meant nothing.
Well, Twist, you mean nothing to Cal Football. So HAH!
Rulon "The Beast" Davis has his own blog now! Here's his first post:
Hello Barkers! I will be writing to you occasionally to let you into my life, the way I see it. Here is my first piece.
Football at the University of California was a crazy experience. The best way I can describe my football experience was a rollercoaster ride. There were a lot of up's and down's.
For the most part, it was truly a leaning experience. I learned how to play the game of football. I learned life lessons like passion, the importance of practice, teamwork, and trust to name a few. I call my experience at Cal a rollercoaster ride because there were times where I had to deal with situations that would bring any man to his knees. There were times where I felt like I was on top of the world.
The best thing I was able to attain at Cal was not the excellent education, but the relationships I made with my teammates, coaches, and fans. The relationships I built will hopefully last me a lifetime. I call my experience crazy because it was over before I knew it. Sometimes in life, people get into a routine. Cal football was so habitual that I didn't understand that my college football career was over until that routine was broken. Cleaning out my locker, saying goodbye to my teammates, and moving some of the last few items out of my apartment made me realize it's over.
Rulon Davis
And omg, he already has a second post:
In college, I would say little things or phrases to motivate my teammates. My girlfriend calls them ru-isms, but I believe it's more then that. I like to think of these ru-isms as a swagger or an attitude that I use to counter my opponents physicality or will to win. "As we should" are three words and simple to remember, but it also empowers my teammates and I to remember who really controls our destiny. So whenever I go into battle I say to myself "am I going to get a sack" and my answer to that is always "as I should". In life, people need something to live for or a code to live by. Mine are words that I use as a tool to gain an edge.
Rulon Davis
epically better than TwistNHook's jokes.
DUMP AWAY.

I went with the second option…
and for those single guys/gals out there…don’t get married until you find someone that makes you vote option 2…
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are not necessarily those of the California Golden Blogs or any of its authors. However, they are just as important as the opinions of any of the authors. And doubly so as compared to TwistNHook!
I think you have to reach a certain age for that to become a possibility.
A lot of us here may be a little too young to make another person that high a priority.
I have no new information on that at this time.
age does have importance. I’m 26…so I don’t view myself as old/wise. I met my wife when I was 19 and we got married when we were 25. Those in between years were spent deciding if a great relationship should become a marriage. I’m glad we waited (my wife wanted to get hitched at 22) as it helped us build a strong and uneffingbreakable bond.

of course, this doesn’t help the running around with loose women urge that all men crave/desire but it helps if you marry best friend ever by day, Jessica Lynn by night.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
you'll find yours someday Ragnarok
just kidding just kidding!
I voted for option F on the poll – just find someone like AndBears who goes to the game with you. Maybe Twist just likes being whipped.

So it’s Jason Giambi, and why not? He’s not packing the same salary as last season, when he earned $1,046,935 for every hit by pitch, and got hit 22 times. He also had the second-best homers-to-at-bats ratio in the American League, and didn’t ask for MannyMoney (copyright The San Francisco Chronicle, so hands off if you don’t want lawyers in your breakfast nook).
I used to hate Ratto, now I find his humor pretty funny.

I saw the BART murder video last night on the news…very disturbing. I don’t even want to post it here. That cop shouldn’t get a trial, he should be shot on the spot (sorry lawyers).

In my book if you kill a guy when he is in handcuffs it’s murder. Guy should think about how he should have payed more attention to his weapons training while sitting in Corcoran. It is pretty tragic that his first child was just born though.

Because the victim's baby had an A1 father? 8 arrests in 2 years.
What the cop did was a horrible mistake, but stop making this Oscar dude out like some kind of saint. For christ’s sake, 8 arrests in two years and was going on number 9 for fighting on the f’n BART train. I suppose he was just trying to keep it real – stupid.
by 33SwisherSweet on Jan 7, 2009 10:20 AM PST up reply actions
Not that I agree with carp, but saying the victim wasn’t a good father has nothing to do with the merits of the policeman as a father. Moreover, it doesn’t matter that the deceased victim had a checkered past, he did not deserve to essentially be executed, face down on the floor for whatever his transgression was on the BART that early morning.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
The officer screwed up and nobody is sure why, but the victim would be alive if not for his (alleged) participation in the (gang) fight and the (alleged) subsequent resisting of his arrest that contributed to escalating a very chaotic situation. He is hardly without fault. This will be interesting to watch unfold.
Oh, I agree the deceased victim was not a saint and surely he would have been punished for causing a ruckus. But, that doesn’t excuse the officer. Just a terrible situation however you slice it.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
But we aren’t even sure what we are possibly “excusing” him for yet. Grabbing the wrong weapon in a valid taser situation? Seeing a flash of metal and overreacting due to the mob? Temporary insanity brought on by family stress? Execution of a co-conspirator in a criminal operation? The only thing to agree upon is that he screwed up; he’d even agree to that. Everything else just has to wait until the “wtf?” aspect of this is sorted out.
I find it hard to think of any circumstances that would excuse shooting a handcuffed man in the back execution-style – and that includes fighting on a BART train and resisting arrest.
I outworthless the Maharg.
I agree with what the others have said here…I’m not saying Oscar deserved to walk but he didn’t need to be executed by a man who supposedly “Protects and Serves.”

Agreed, though depending on what facts come out, it could be manslaughter or murder.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
I’m sure manslaughter is the max he will get. The video pretty clearly shows him knowing he f’ed up. He will most likely plead, too much public outcry.
aren’t they pushing 2nd degree murder?

I haven’t read too much about the incident nor watched the video. Second degree makes sense, the officer was at least recklessly indifferent, if not intentionally killing the victim. Though, I agree, a plead makes sense here.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
watching the video isn’t a pleasant experience. horrifying comes to mind.

I’m a scientist by training so things in my world are fairly cut & dried.
An attorney for the family of the unarmed man who was fatally shot by a BART police officer early New Year’s Day filed a $25 million claim against the transit agency Tuesday, pushing the case forward even though BART has yet to speak with the officer or say why he fired his gun.
- First, why are they sueing BART and not the officer who shot him? If the employee was assumed to be mentally fit and properly trained, then why doesn’t responsibility lie solely on the officer?

is it really this simple?
He is acting as an agent for BART.
Does that make any business owners/agency leaders shudder?
And regarding the deeper pockets, how the eff does $25 mil come to mind for a guy who prolly makes 25 k a year? It’s not like they killed ARod! His death his tragic and should have never happened, but $25 mil sounds rigoddamndiculous.
Whose going to pay for this? Taxpayers? Are rider fares going to go up?

The opinions expressed in a FanPost are not necessarily those of the California Golden Blogs or any of its authors. However, they are just as important as the opinions of any of the authors. And doubly so as compared to TwistNHook!
Quite simply, yes it is that simple. If he is an employee and not an independent contractor, and if he was acting within the scope of his employment, BART may be liable.
As for the $25 million, that includes past medical, lost earnings, future lost earnings, and pain and suffering. The high number probably comes from punitive damages which are actually awarded to punish the negligent party.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
The only thing that does concern me is whether BART is a government agency. You cannot sue a police department for actions by police officers unless they offer assistance above and beyond what their normal duties are. The injured party also has to rely on that promise of assistance. If BART is akin to the police department this could be a problem.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
Apparently BART is a transit district (like a school district) and as such acts much like an independent corporation and as such can be sued. What is interesting is whether or not the BART police are their own organization. The judge could say that the plaintiff has to sue the BART police, which many in turn have immunity and the suit could be tossed. I highly doubt that this goes to trial though.

Could we stop talking about this incident on a Cal blog....seriously.
I’m not seeing how this is at all related to Cal.
Furthermore, the “outrage” consisted of 20 protesters at BART headquarters. The only reason this crap is front page news is because it was caught on camera and the news media can make money off of it. Unfortunately, this type of stuff happens more than you would like to know and rarely receives this type of attention.

Womens bball coach Boyle named rising star:
The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced its winners for the 2009 WBCA Superlatives, with California Golden Bears head coach Joanne Boyle earning the Rising Star award.
Joanne Boyle, the 2007-08 Russell Athletic/WBCA Region 8 Coach of the Year, has guided the California women’s basketball program to the distinction of being one of the top-10 teams in the country in her four seasons at the helm.
Boyle has amassed a 79-30 record in three years in Berkeley, giving her the best winning percentage (.724) of any of the eight women’s basketball coaches in school history and a six-year career record of 146-59 (.712). Under Boyle’s direction, Cal has registered three consecutive NCAA Tournament berths (2006-08) for the first time and consecutive seasons with at least 20 wins for only the second time in school history. In 2008, Cal also advanced to the final of the Pac-10 Tournament for the first time.
Womens bball has home opening weekend:
BERKELEY -
Thursday, Jan. 8, 7:00 p.m.: Washington St. at Cal, Berkeley, Calif.
Sunday, Jan. 11, 12:30 p.m.: Washington at Cal, Berkeley, Calif. (Radio: KALX 90.7 fm, TV: Sunday, FSN)
For the second straight season, the California Golden Bears have started the season with a 2-0 mark in Pac-10 play. The Bears earned a 56-46 victory at Arizona Jan. 2, followed by a 54-53 thriller at Arizona State Jan. 4 to put them atop the conference standings. Since joining the Pac-10, the Bears have only started 3-0 or better two times- last season when they won six straight to begin conference play and in 1991-92 when they began with a 4-0 record. Overall, the Bears have started conference play 3-0 or better eight times, with their best start coming in 1981-82 when they went 8-0 to begin their NorCal Conference play.
After the opening weekend, the Bears are now 22-24 overall in the opening weekend of Pac-10 play. They have opened their Pac-10 season facing the Arizona schools nine times with a 7-11 record in those games.
The Bears are 11-11 in their Pac-10 home openers. Last season, they played they opened Pac-10 play at Haas with a 66-40 victory over Washington. Cal has won two of their last three Pac-10 home openers. This year, the Washington State Cougars will get the nod to play in Cal’s Pac-10 home opener. The Cougars have lost the last seven times they have faced Cal. Last year’s home contest against Washington State saw a final score of 99-44, with five different Cal players scoring double-digit points. The game was also the largest margin of victory for a Cal team in a Pac-10 game (44 points) and set a record for most points scored by a Cal team playing at Haas Pavilion.
Rugby about to begin:
BERKELEY – The 2009 Golden Bears roster is under way in a determined effort to earn the right to represent their University against a sizzling schedule replete with top-notch competition from January through April.
Coming off of California’s 24th national championship in 2008, the program’s fifth in a row, head coach Jack Clark, coach Tom Billups and staff have challenged the team once again to rise up to a level that signals the fulfillment of its potential, a season-long journey with no guarantees.
Despite a tremendous loss of talent, a continuing battle to regain health and conditioning, and the time that will be needed for this team to jell, fans can be certain that the Bears will mean business when they run under the posts and onto the pitch.
Pay no mind to the body of work that precedes this season’s team – the challenges for the 2009 Golden Bears are fraught with excitement and uncertainty. While the irreplaceable boots of departed veterans loom large as the 127th season of University of California rugby gets set to begin, the opportunity for the entire roster to prove itself once again on the pitch infuses every meeting, workout and training session.
Few rugby teams in the United States, collegiate or otherwise, have been forced to address the departure of talent such as that which the Golden Bears experienced following the 2008 season.
ASU’s Pendergraph is injured:

“Heroic Mule” is now my #1 fav band name (were I to ever start a band):
McMINNVILLE, Tenn. — Jolene Solomon is beginning the new year with her life, her mule named Lou and little else. The Southern Standard in McMinnville reported Solomon had just finished eating supper on New Year’s Day when Lou’s braying and acting up got her attention.
Solomon, 63, who lived alone, stepped outside, she saw her house was on fire. She called 911 and as she waited for firefighters, her home and everything in it burned to the ground.
She said her father bought Lou years ago to help her and her late sister, Blue, around the farm. It took Lou months to get over the loss of her sister.
Solomon said she has ‘lost it all’, but credits Lou with saving her life.
Jolene is staying with family members and plans to rebuild her home. The home was built by her grandfather and she had lived there all her life.

What’s the city with the Del Taco and Anderson’s Pea Soup that we stop at on the way down?
I have no new information on that at this time.
The name does not refer to a saint, as there is no “Saint Nella”. It appears to have been formed from the Spanish sentinela ("sentinel"), possibly referring to the Centinela Adobe.
It makes for a great exclamation, however: “Santa Nella!”
Their pea soup is good, but it takes too long to serve.
Unfortunately, we’re always running late due to traffic, broken down BART trains, or stupidity, so it’s always Del Taco.
But the gas station next to Del Taco is quite exciting. For only a quarter, you can get a spray of the fake cologne of your choice!
I have no new information on that at this time.
I’ve visited that Del Taco a few times.
My usual strategy for I-5 is to leave early in the morning to avoid crowds. This usually means I’m in LA or SF before it’s lunch time. Coming north we stop in Pleasanton for lunch sometimes.
Yeah, that strategy never works. If I have to take, say, Friday off, I’ll leave Thursday after work to maximize fun time.
I have no new information on that at this time.
The strategy is to let someone else drive that part, then offer to take over later.

Cal might want to look at departing Oregon O-line coach. Also the D-line coach and WR coaches seem to be on their way out, per Kelly’s instructions.
The announcement of Kelly as heir apparent apparently convinced offensive line coach/assistant head coach Steve Greatwood to pursue a head coaching future elsewhere. Greatwood, who played at Oregon and has been a UO assistant for 24 seasons, is a finalist at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
A superb line coach and a dynamic recruiter, Greatwood would be a major loss.
Yeah if he gets the offer he’ll obviously take it, but if he doesn’t Tedford should be on the phone with him immediately.

Secondly, I missed this “What’s the word?” thing. I was in Court all morning trying to keep the Court from sanctioning my client who, I think, misused funds for her own purposes. Which is to say, NAILED IT!
Please disregard the above ramblings as those of a clearly delusional fan.

I wish I could take credit for some momentary bit of genius when coming up with the sig but honestly, it is no more than the truth and as we all know, the truth shall set you free. I’ve always wanted to be free and now’s my chance.

That one guy toward the end of the article has an address book containing 3,000 names and he has a list of 120 best friends. That seems psychotic. Or, he actually has 36 hours in his days.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
Hey I'm up to #7 in pick'em
WHOOOOOO. I’M NUMBER SEVEN. I’M NUMBER SEVEN.
What do I win this time?

First place: One hour with the Maharg
Second place: Two hours with the Maharg
I outworthless the Maharg.
Shit, what the hell am I going to do with 7 hours with the Maharg?
What the hell does Maharg do with 7 hours with the Maharg?!??!?!

Does that mean I get to win time with myself? Sanctioned by the CGB community? I’m pretty sure a judge said I’m not allowed to spend time by myself anymore.
No, I’m not The Maharg but thanks for thinking of me so highly.
I think I just had a bout of explosive diarrhea looking at that hemet. Thanks for nothing.

7 hours with me is the same as a UCLA helmet? or is 7 hours with me the same as explosive diarrhea? Either way, I think I’m insulted.
No, I’m not The Maharg but thanks for thinking of me so highly.
7 hours with you is the same as 7 hours of wearing a UCLA filled with explosive diarrhea. Either way, you’re an insult.

Kennard supposedly down to USC and Texas
But these guys have been wrong before. And Tedford’s visiting him tonight anyway, so I assume Cal’s still on the table.
I doubt Tedford would waste his time if he didn't think he had a shot
but I’m certainly not keeping my hopes up.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
I dunno, Kennard is pretty much unanimously the #1 DE and some think he is the best defensive recruit in the country. Carroll is blue-chip but I’m not sure as heralded. Also, he is apparently pretty raw at WR and Cal has quite a bit of depth there. However it turns out, I’d love for Cal to get both guys but I would be satisfied with one or the other.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
This is pretty good
Re: Oregon State men’s basketball team beating USC last Sunday, snapping their 23-game conference losing streak:
After the game, Oregon State fans at Gill Coliseum were chanting, "Just like football!"
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
I was thinking it would be a good name for a teen drama on the WB.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
JO continues his season review with wide receivers
We obviously didn’t know what to make of Cal’s receivers before the season started. I’m not sure we still do.
The Bears entered the season completely unproven at receiver. Guys like Nyan Boateng, Verran Tucker and Jeremy Ross proved to at least by steady and serviceable, but nobody really knocked your socks off.
As we discussed with the quarterbacks, there are a lot of factors at work. Perhaps the quarterbacks weren’t doing a good enough job getting the ball in the receivers’ hands. There were some games the offensive line’s injuries brought the passing game to a standstill.
But there’s no question the wide receivers didn’t make enough plays. Boateng led the Bears with 29 catches. Lavelle Hawkins had 72 to lead Cal in 2007.

Reviewing JO's written articles
We obviously didn’t know what to make of JO’s articles before the season started. I’m not sure we still do.
JO entered the season completely unproven at articles. Pieces like season review, post-game grades and “Jeremy Ross is Ripped” proved to at least by steady and serviceable, but nothing really knocked your socks off.
As we discussed with Wilner, there are a lot of factors at work. Perhaps the coaches and players weren’t doing a good enough job getting the information into JO’s hands. There were some games that Tedford’s secrecy brought exclusive articles to a standstill.
But there’s no question JO didn’t break enough new information. JO didn’t know what colour uniforms the Bears were wearing to the Emerald Bowl. OskiWeeWee knew they’d be gold.

I have no new information on that at this time.
