1.6.09 DBD Hold Me Tighter, CaliforniaGoldenBlogs, I Just Want To Smell Your Hair A Little
I'll never leave you again. I don't know what I was thinking!??!?! I can't do this long distance thing. All the late night dirty texting is great. But it isn't quite the same. It's not the same. It's never the same.
I miss you so much. I just wanted to caress your beautiful icon and tousle your great tagline. What a sweet tagline you have. Did you miss me? Please say yes. I'm not sure I can handle "no." You weren't seeing other bloggers, were you? Did that Jake character touch your inappropriately? I'LL KILL THAT BEAVER LOVING BASTARD!
But, yknow, the time apart might have been good for our relationship. Give me time to work on some new material. All that old stuff was so stale. Kevin Craft is part of a Norwegian Death Metal band?!? What the heck was I smoking, then?
But now, I've got some stuff that really pops! Like check this little ditty out:
Q.Why did the chicken cross the road?
A. To get to the other side.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH, he shoots he scores! oh man, I totally just wrote that one laying by the beach, doodling your face, CaliforniaGoldenBlogs. Ok, here's another one, I thought up.
I just flew in from San Francisco..........AND BOY ARE MY ARMS TIRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did you see what I did there?!? Unbelievable! Yet another TwistNHook classic. I'M BACK, BABY!
So, yes, there are some great jokes on the horizon, almost as good as those bad boys. But the most important thing I did was consider the existential nature of "NAILED IT!" As we headed into the vacation void, I was thinking that maybe that meme was stale. AddictedToQuack had been down on it. Maybe they were on to something. They did get that "Oregon State can't defend the run straight ahead offense" thing correct, afterall.
So, I wracked my brain, trying to think of some other memes we could use. Maybe, I thought, if we wanted to agree wholeheartedly with something, we could respond with the word "This." Or perhaps we could discuss whether or not the San Francisco Giants had previously done an action similar to the one in question. Those were just some of the ideas I considered. But then I figured that those were the absolute fucking lutely stupidest possible things anybody could ever think up. Ever.
So, I threw away those inane inanities and realized that no matter how hard I try to fight it, Nailed It and I are inseparable. We're BFFAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEs! I think the Bible put it best in Revelation 22:13 when they said:
"Nailed It is the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end."
Now, I know what you are thinking. Generally, you come to the California Golden Blogs for the finest Biblical analysis this side of "ChristerHitchens.com." And you are disappointed, because, let's be honest here, no Biblical Analysis of Revelations 22:13 would be complete without looking at Revelation 22:14. Ok, ok, ok, I guess I'm a bit lazy coming off my vacation. And a Jew. Either way, let's take a gander:
"How blessed are those who wash their robes so that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city!
Washing robes? Gates into the City? Alligators wearing sunglasses? Now, I've seen EVERYTHING!
.......
.......
I think I speak for everybody when I say NAILED IT!
So, let's greet this new year by NAILING IT all over again. NAILING IT all night long. I fell in love again with NAILED IT! and so can you. And if you can't, well, then you can take your USC degree in "Recreational Sciences" and get the fuck out of here!
Bears looking good under Montgomery:
ONE AFTER ANOTHER, men and women of all ages approached Sandy Barbour with expressions of appreciation. The Cal athletic director was, in the immediate wake of this Golden Bears win, the queen of Haas Pavilion.
Royalty is the natural status of those who change a culture for the better. Nobody looks more royal — and ingenious — than Barbour, for she delivered Mike Montgomery to the Cal men's basketball program.
Montgomery's first weekend through the treacherous path that is the Pac-10 schedule was a resounding success. His Bears ripped Arizona on Friday, then on Sunday followed up with an 81-71 flushing of 17th-ranked Arizona State that made statements galore.
BBall Musings:
– Walking down the stairway toward the press room at Haas Pavilion after Cal’s win over Arizona on Friday night, I heard one fan remark, "Wow, that was a surprise." Wait a minute, that was every Cal fan saying that.
– Not sure which was the bigger stunner – Cal sweeping the Arizona schools or Oregon State beating anyone, much less USC. Congrats to Craig Robinson, who already has a leg-up on his brother-in-law, President-elect Obama, in their respective rebuilding jobs.
Football review: QBs
Ah, yes. I’m sure just reading the word "quarterbacks" already has many of you worked into a tizzy. Let’s all settle down and work through this. Deep breath, everyone. Think pleasant thoughts.
The quarterback position got almost as much attention at the end of the year as it did in the beginning — albeit, for a substantially different reason. We all know why the focus was there in the preseason — to see who would win the starting job. Would Jeff Tedford stick with embattled incumbent Nate Longshore or tantalizingly talented redshirt sophomore Kevin Riley? We all know how that played out. Of course, it didn’t stick.
The attention at the end of the season was mostly because how ineffective both players were. Tedford went back and forth all season trying to find an answer. We’re one week into the offseason now and he still doesn’t have one.
Cal upsets ASU:
The Cal men's basketball team completed a perfect weekend to open the Pac-10 Conference season, upending No. 17 Arizona State 81-71 to send home a delirious Haas Pavilion crowd with smiles on their faces.
"It was definitely fun," said junior guard Patrick Christopher, who finished the game with 20 points, two stitches on his chin and a chipped tooth. "People are coming to watch us play more. I guess we're a pretty exiting team."
Two days after beating Arizona for just the third time in 21 tries, the Bears put a bookend on just their second home sweep of the desert schools in 10 years.
Womens BBall beats ASU, too:
TEMPE, Ariz. — Ashley Walker's layup with 1.8 seconds remaining gave the No. 13 Cal women's basketball team a 54-53 win over Arizona State on Sunday.
Dymond Simon hit a 3-pointer with 8.7 seconds to go to put Arizona State up 53-52. But that left enough time for one more possession for Cal (11-2, 2-0 Pac-10). Kelsey Adrian missed a layup but Walker got the loose ball underneath for the game-winner.
"The final play was really surreal. I was just watching the whole thing," Cal coach Joanne Boyle said. "We set a play. We didn't get anything. We called a time out. We went back, trying something a little bit different, tweak it a little bit. The ball bounces the right way. Ashley grabs the ball on the last second, puts it back in. Sometimes karma just comes your way."
Simon's shot capped a 13-2 run over nearly five minutes for the Sun Devils (8-6, 0-2).
Natasha Vital scored 17 of her 19 points in the second half, including a go-ahead basket with 39 seconds left to give the Bears a 52-50 lead.
Womens Gymnastics about to start season:
BERKELEY - The California Golden Bears women's gymnastics team opens its season this Saturday, Jan. 10, with a 7 p.m. tri-meet, hosting Sacramento State and UC Davis at Haas Pavilion.
With only four upperclassmen on this year's Cal squad, head coach Cari DuBois is looking to each gymnast on the team to be at her best this season. Coming off a campaign in which it earned representation at the NCAA West Regional for the third consecutive year, Cal has its sights set on returning to regionals as a team and improving its finish at the Pac-10 Championships.
In order to accomplish these goals, DuBois will call upon her three seniors - Joanna Bennett, Bridgette Glass and Jessica Kelley - to provide the veteran leadership necessary to lead the young squad. In addition to the guidance of the seniors, DuBois notes that each gymnast will need to work hard at her role on the team in order to be successful this year.
"We definitely want to qualify for regionals as a team and continue to improve our fitness level and remain healthy," said DuBois, who begins her seventh season leading the Cal program. "Looking back at last year, no matter what type of adversity we faced, we remained determined and continued to work hard. I believe that we are a very talented young group, and I feel the passion and desire. Leadership will have a significant impact on what we are able to accomplish this year. Overall, I feel like the team is in better shape than it was last year."

Jack Clark is 2008 coach of the year:
BERKELEY - California head coach Jack Clark was named National Coach of the Year by American Rugby News on Dec. 29 in honor of his 2008 season, a 24-1 campaign that puts Clark's career coaching record at 440-66-5 (.861) after 25 seasons, making him the all-time winningest coach in the Cal rugby program's 127-year history.
"You accept recognition on behalf of your players and your team," Clark said of the honor. The sixth coach in Cal rugby's history also gave praise to his players and staff for their invaluable contributions to the Bears' success.
Clark was selected by ARN as the Coach of the Year from a pool of candidates representing U.S. coaches at all levels. He was also named Best Coach of the Spring by The Daily Californian May 7, edging out Joanne Boyle, the honorable mention following her women's basketball team's third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.
In announcing the award, ARN editor Brian Lowe praised Clark's "phenomenal achievement this year in winning his 20th national championship with the Golden Bears. What an outstanding achievement and one which will stand for a long, long time."
LBJ Jr. is Pac10 PotW:
BERKELEY - California junior forward Patrick Christopher has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Men's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 29 - Jan. 4, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Christopher posted two 20-point performances as the Golden Bears opened Pac-10 play with victories over Arizona and No. 17 Arizona State. The Compton, Calif., native matched his season high of 23 points against the Wildcats on Jan. 2. Christopher averaged 21.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals in the two contests.
Christopher's efforts helped the Bears increase their current winning streak to seven games. The junior is tied for 10th in the Pac-10 in scoring (15.0 ppg) and ranks fourth in free throw percentage (.878).

Mike Montgomery's offense
I’ve watched a few Cal games so far this year, the latest was in their own tournament against Dartmouth. Tonight, the Cal Bears really impressed me with their offense. One thing is for certain, Mike Montgomery is one heckuva coach and has the Cal Bears playing some great ball right now.
First off, they took advantage of some poor shot selection by the ASU Sun Devils to score in transition. In the half court, they ran a great zone offense against the ASU 3-2 matchup zone that got great looks inside and didn’t settle for too many 3-pointers. A lot of baseline cuts, and screen and seals. Here are few sequences from throughout the game.

oooh, charts...
Thanks for sharing this! I appreciate being able to see the plays, understand what’s happening. Seems more difficult in basketball than Football, to casually look on and understand, but maybe that’s just me (I can’t tell when the running around is on purpose or not).
But definitely Mongtomery is a lot more aggressive in his play style, which is a lot less frustrating to watch certainly.
That list was not exhaustive. Plus, how could I forget The Big Bak Man when he was on the trip with me!

I just got back from Tampa last night too…my clock isn’t back to PST yet…
found a nice article on Jesus with a Headset.
He’s already bearing down on school standards. His seven seasons as coach (football, James Schaefer fans, not rugby) rank fifth ā Pappy Waldorf, Stub Allison and Andy Smith hold the record with 10. He’s fourth in games coached (89; the record is 103), and wins (59; the record is 74). His .663 winning percentage is third among Cal coaches with 20 games or more. Of the 10 bowl wins in Cal history, Tedford has accounted for half.
There are holes on the resume, to be sure. He has yet to win an outright Pac-10 championship. Then there’s the Rose Bowl thing. But if he hasn’t delivered Old Blues and their clinical obsession to Pasadena, he’s at least revived the notion as a possibility.
Even bigger than that, he has resolved a monstrous, long-standing parochial “what if?” ā as in, what if Cal ever combined its considerable resources with a good football coach who stuck around. What would happen then?
Steve Mariucci referred to the program as a sleeping giant when he took the head coaching position in 1996. He was right then, he was right when he left for the 49ers after one season at Cal, and he was right until the moment Tedford showed up in 2002.
The program isn’t sleeping anymore. Its highly regarded coach has it annually competitive pretty much to the extent that resources and institutional philosophy permit. He’s got the full support of donors and the administration. He runs a relatively clean machine, and by all appearances he has dropped anchor.
What does that kind of thing get a fellow at Cal? Well, Waldorf won 103 games, and he’s got a statue on campus. Smith won 97 games, and is immortalized by the Andy Smith bench on the Cal sideline at Memorial Stadium. The team’s annual most inspirational award is named for Allison (102 wins).
Jeff Tedford Field at the New Memorial Stadium? There have been longer shots at Cal. We’ve been watching one the past seven years.
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are not necessarily those of the California Golden Blogs or any of its authors. However, they are just as important as the opinions of any of the authors. And doubly so as compared to TwistNHook!
Well regarding the second to last paragraph, Waldorf and Smith did not win 103 and 97 games at Cal. Tedford is a little over a season away from surpassing both in win total. Though, no one will ever touch the resume of Andy Smith.
As for naming the field after Tedford, I could certainly see that being the case, assuming Cal makes it to a Rose Bowl soon.

So, in this extended metaphor are you having a relationship with CGB or with Nailed It? Or are you in a relationship with CGB and having an affair with Nailed it? None-the-less, it’s a little dirty either way.
I must know the answer or my fan fiction sequel won’t come out right!
Patrick Christopher is the Pac-10 player of the week.
If the tournament started today…
Keep in mind itās the first week of January and none of this means a thing, but my buddy Joe Lunardi, ESPNās very smart "bracketologist," projects Cal as a No. 6 seed in the NCAA tournament. He says the Bears will play No. 11 Dayton at Minneapolis.
UCLA will earn a No. 3 seed, Arizona State a No. 7 and Stanford a No. 11, according to Lunardi. Arizona and USC are not in the mix at this point.

I am waiting for the day when the iPhone becomes what it was really meant to be: a mobile, a PDA, an mp3 player, and a camera – all in one.
Because while the iPhone can do all that, it’s not a good enough PDA to really replace the Blackberry, it’s not a good enough mp3 player (mainly due to storage and battery life issues) to replace an iPod, and it’s not a good enough camera to replace your 10 MP Canon digital camera.
I have no new information on that at this time.
No.

Is this your actual preference or is it determined by cost/new OS? Lots of reasons to not change, just curious.

I wasn’t trying to convert anyone — PCs are fine too and until a few years ago I was a PC guy. It’s just that it’s news that is happening right now as I sit at my computer…and only available in a liveblog format.
Unless you are saying that you actually are a PC.
It's seriously too bad that there's no building or complex around that might have a large supply of sports drinks.
Yeah, I moved back to Macs a couple years ago too. Certainly not as much buzz surrounding this keynote.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
True. Phil Schiller seems to be doing a pretty good job, though. They are definitely moving away from the Steve Jobs = Apple & Apple = Steve Jobs mentality, which I think is a good thing.
It's seriously too bad that there's no building or complex around that might have a large supply of sports drinks.
Definitely, when the stock price moves up and down depending on Steve’s health, that isn’t a good thing.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
Agreed.
I own a small amount of AAPL (now I’m really sounding like a fanboy) and it can be painful to watch sometimes.
It's seriously too bad that there's no building or complex around that might have a large supply of sports drinks.
And now . . . Tony Bennett.
thenick, perhaps you follow this closer than I do, but why is Apple pulling out of Macworld following this year?
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
I haven’t heard a definitive answer, but my guesses from what I’ve read and my own thoughts, are the:
a) Steve Jobs’ fluctuating health. It doesn’t seem like he’s in any real trouble, but man would it be a pain in the ass if every time you had a doctor’s appointment your company’s stock plummets.
b) The diminishing role that the whole company (including Steve) wants for Steve. He’s getting ready to retire and he doesn’t want it to be a shock to Macworld or the rest of the company image.
c) Apple doesn’t really need Macworld any more. They have their own events like the developer conferences and the special events which always happen the right amount of time before Christmas.
d) Product expos in general are becoming less and less relevant with the rise of the Interwebs and 24/7/365 coverage of every little minute detail. A company can have their own little event, invite the blog-o-cube, and get tons and tons of press to the people who really want to hear it.
It's seriously too bad that there's no building or complex around that might have a large supply of sports drinks.
I think the last two make a lot of sense. But, if it is done because of Steve’s health, that would be a mistake. If Apple wants to move away from Jobs as their icon, not attending Macworld because of his health doesn’t help.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
I didn’t mean it that way.
I think c) and d) are more important, however Job’s keynote has been a big part of Macworld for a decade, and I was suggesting that they would want to pull out of the expo sooner rather than later so that it’s not a shock.
It’s kind of like when a TV show deliberately ends when it has good ratings.
It's seriously too bad that there's no building or complex around that might have a large supply of sports drinks.
I get it and obviously the mainstream draw to Macworld is Jobs and his keynote. As decent as Phil was today, it just wasn’t the same. But, perhaps that’s because there was no ground breaking product being launched.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
I’ve used PCs for as long as I can remember and don’t think I could handle the change. I’m sort of like the University of Mississippi in the early 1960s

What about Cal, which is shooting 50.5 percent from 3 for the year? Are you kidding me? According to ESPN researcher Jeremy Lundblad, that percentage — if somehow maintained — would be the second-best of all-time in Division I. In fact, no team has shot better than 45 percent since 1993-94 Indiana.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Just Nepotism
Brother Gregg is one of our assistant coaches.
But seriously, that’s amazing.
But also somewhat troubling – we’re bound to cool off a bit, and when we do, we’ll probably drop a few games. Without much scoring from our forwards, it’s live and die by the 3. Hopefully our defense will improve and carry us when the shots aren’t falling.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
Are we going to cool off? Those three guys all have NBA range. I see us cooling off maybe to 45% range. Maybe.
You ain't got it like Marshawn got it
Everyone cools off. Defenses still aren’t used to coming out to the new 3 point line, so a lot of these shots are uncontested. Once smart defensive teams start coming out from their zones to defend it more (because they have better big men inside), the numbers will drop, maybe to 40-45% (still astounding).

I just feel Robertson has great shot selection and so dos Christopher (with maybe 1 or 2 NO NO NO YES! bombs a game), and we’ll use our phenomenal interior passing if the threes are cut off. We won’t take as many, so our percentage would have to be very low for us to drop that much over the 2nd half of the season. We don’t take an enormous amount of threes, and Randle is the only one who just jacks them up. And he’s quite magical when he does.

And the difference between 50% and 45%
that’s about 1 three pointer per game, give or take. We beat Utah by two, and it took Randle’s 4 point play to turn the ASU game into a sure victory. It might make the difference in one or two close games.
But I agree, those guys are very good shooters (especially Randle and Robertson), they’re passing very well and showing great patience and spacing. It’s definitely not a fluke right now.

Is Carroll better suited for corner?
Having watched (Los Angeles/Cathedral) athlete Randall Carroll play numerous times over the last two years, I really think his upside at the college level might be highest playing corner.
Carroll has very good speed and on the track, no one is faster. However on the football field, I’ve never seen that same separation speed you might think you would see from someone who can run a sub-10.4 100 meters.
Does he have a burst? Of course he does and he’s not going to get caught from behind too many times, but he’s still raw as a pure pass catcher and his skill set actually may be best suited to corner. Carroll is not afraid to mix it up and has good size as well.
We know his preference is to play receiver in college no matter what you may hear in various interviews, but long term Carroll’s best chance at playing on Sundays is likely on the other side of the ball.
Cal lands a good one
It may not get the same fanfare as some of the other commitments from this weekend, but Cal landing offensive lineman Mark Brazinski (Somerville, N.J./Immaculata) was huge.
Brazinski is a player I loved at the NIKE Camp at Penn State where he earned OL MVP honors in what was a strong group of linemen. He then committed to Rutgers back in June but de-committed just two months later.
Brazinski took official visits to North Carolina, Boston College and Cal and also had Florida State and Pennsylvania in his final five. The visit to Cal was his most recent but still most felt the lineman would stay closer to home and Penn even looked like a possible favorite, where his older brother played.
In the end, the Bears won out as Brazinski said he loved the warm weather, the Business program and his relationship with the coaching staff. Just how good is the future center? Brazinski is rated the No. 2 player in the country at his position by ESPNU and with three-year starter Alex Mack graduating, it would not be a surprise at all if the physical lineman starts as a true freshman next season.

Seems like he's definitely preferred walk-on status at this point
and we may give him a scholarship if spots are available. I have a good feeling about him. He worked hard to lose 40 lbs and has improved greatly in his senior year. He also held his own in Hawaii against 4 and 5 star recruits. People are amazed he doesn’t have offers. It seems like we’ll be getting really heavy interior line recruits based on our power run schemes.
You ain't got it like Marshawn got it
Pac-10 has weak bowl affiliations
⢠USC is better than PSU. Not shocking, but obviously a great win for the Pac10.
⢠The 2nd best team in the Pac10 is better than the 4th place team in the B12. Not shocking.
⢠In a good win for the Pac10, their 3rd place team beats the Big East runner up. Of course, this is the Big East and, as such, should be considered a mid-major football conference.
⢠The 4th place Pac10 representative beats the 7th place ACC team. Again, not shocking.
⢠Finally, the 3rd best team in a mid-major conference is beaten by the 5th best Pac10 team. At this point, I’d like to ask the Pac10 if they want a medal for this amazing accomplishment.
The rub:
The Pac10 bowl affiliations are a joke. They always have been for as long as I can remember. In years where the Pac10 only has one BCS representative (USC), the effects of this become magnified because 2-3 of their match-ups turn out to be against the n+1th best team (see the Holiday Bowl where the Big12 sent their 4th best team due to OU and Tex going to the BCS, and the Vegas Bowl where their champ, Utah, unexpectedly received a BCS berth (andand the unexplained selection of 3rd place BYU over 2nd place TCU)). The simple fact is, the Pac10 plays down in their bowl match-ups. Go back to look for the Pac10 record in bowl games. They are almost always 5-1 or 4-2 or 5-0. But look at who they placed in those games.
This is all well and good
but there’s no real basis to say we had a hugely, horrible, shitty down year in which 4 big 12 teams were ranked ahead of our 2nd team. I think with the way Oregon finished the season, they would have mopped the floor with Texas Tech and maybe even Texas. To be honest, I felt Cal would have crushed OK State and Texas Tech too because we match up so well. Think about Jahvid running through those slow-ass secondaries. Our D has the right speed and leadership to combat ant spread offense.

the defending team gets their option. most times, they’d want it on the kickoff, but with no time left, getting the ball back wouldn’t help, so BYU tried to simply make the extra point harder. lo and behold, it worked!
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
JO’s year in review: running backs
Bestās success this year surprised nobody who has watched him practice every day since heās been at Cal. Iāve probably written this before, but after a couple of days of training camp last year, when he was a freshman, he had observers wowed with his athleticism and ability. And it became clear as a freshman that he was more than just a track star playing football. All one has to do is look at how he played gunner on punt coverage ā something he had never done ā to see the natural football instincts he has. Best was named All-Pac-10 first team for his work as a gunner.
Backup Shane Vereen had his moments ā he actually only had 52 fewer carries than Best ā and rushed for 715 yards (55 ypg). He and Best also had 27 catches each, tied for second on the team. When Best missed the Arizona State game because of his elbow injury, Vereen rushed for 93 yards.
Will Taāufoāou established himself as perhaps the best fullback in the Pac-10, leading the way on so many of Bestās big runs. Never was that more apparent than the Emerald Bowl, when he had a couple of key blocks on crucial plays. The graduating Taāufoāou will be one of Calās biggest holes to fill on offense next season.

Iāve probably written this before, but after a couple of days of training camp last year, when he was a new journalist, he had observers wowed with his wit and humour. Meet Pat Forde, ESPN doofus
Oh Oklahoma is honorable oh ho ho ho ho!
Oklahoma did its best to tilt the scoreboard late in its last couple of games — but the Sooners did no such thing for most of the season. In fact, other highly ranked teams did more of it.
Of the teams that finished the regular season in The Associated Press top five, only Alabama scored a smaller percentage of its points in the fourth quarter than Oklahoma — the Crimson Tide scored 12.9 percent of their points in the final 15 minutes, Oklahoma 13.3 percent. Texas, whose fans were maddest at the Sooners because of their down-to-the-wire battle for a BCS berth, scored 21.8 percent of its points in the fourth quarter. Florida: 22.8 percent. And USC was the team most likely to pad its margin late at 23.6 percent.
What an utterly meaningless stat. All you need is two to three more TDs to jump up a few percentage points.
But the Preview button said it was okay! FAIL!

Did the data include games when the outcome was not yet decisively clear after three quarters, or are they simply putting together random numbers so they have something to talk about? I’m guessing it’s the latter.

This might be of interest to those who believe in booing
With three minutes left in the third quarter of Monday night’s game vs. the Kings, Keyon Dooling stole the ball from Kevin Martin near halfcourt and was immediately fouled by Martin. Dooling went to the line for two shots on the clear path violation. After he missed the first, one in a series of missed free throws by the Nets, a cascade of boo’s rained down on the Nets’ guard. Dooling made a motion with his hands as if to say, “bring it on” while mimicking the crowd’s boos. After making the second and then quickly hitting a three, Dooling turned to the crowd as he ran down the court and sarcastically mouthed the word “boo!”
Marv Albert and Mike Fratello noted the episode and even replayed it on YES.
After the game, Dooling explained his feelings to the media.
“We don’t like the boo’s at home. It doesn’t make us play better,” Dooling said. “If they come and cheer us, that will be more helpful. We want to get it right. We don’t want to lose, especially on our home court. We want to give them a good show. We want to play hard, we want to play with intensity we want to do all the things that make them happy. But in this league, sometimes you have rough starts, and cheering would help us get through it.”
He was asked, Is it that bad? Dooling responded: “I played for the Clippers, and it was never like this,” he said, a testament to just how bad he thinks things are.
Mike Tepper has been granted a sixth year of eligibility
This has not been confirmed anywhere other than a Bear Insider post, but he has apparently been told he will be allowed to play in 2009; apparently his Facebook status says he’s coming back.

Brief summary since I don't enough about the OL
Tepper or Schwartz will probably battle it out for left tackle, with the loser taking right tackle;
Boskovich and Cheadle will most likely start at the guards, Guarnero at center; Edwards, Laird and Teofilo would be the backups there. That’s a not too shabby 8 olinemen. Also Galas and Rigsbee and Summers-Gavin might be in the mix for PT.
Add in Siddoway, Schwenke and Brazinski who will be all set for 2010 and ready to redshirt if need be. That is solid depth.
CBKWit and Hydro will probably have a better idea of how the pieces will fit together.
by BearsNecessity on Jan 6, 2009 5:06 PM PST up reply actions
sounds good to me…some folks think Brazinski could start next year…
MSG and Galas might push for PT too. Guarnero will start…but it might be LG. LG, C, and RG will be highly competitive I think.
I suppose we should find out if Tepper is actually healthy. He’s taken a LONG time to fix a torn boob.

really really do not think that Brazinski will start next year
we always hype the incoming freshman, but we have to remember that there are already other players on our roster. Plus, it’s really difficult for offensive lineman to start as true freshman – I don’t recall it being done recently at Cal.
We might see Guarnero and Galas start side by side, but my guess is that Brazinski redshirts and plays on the scout team
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
When has a true frosh ever started on OL? Guarnero was just as highly touted as this guy. This is more a long-term depth investment.
You ain't got it like Marshawn got it
have we ever had a #2 lineman? Could Brazkinski be the highest touted OL recruit we’ve ever had? If so, Brazinksi could be starting a new trend thus throwing the old Cal philosophies of Olineman out the window.
Tedford hasn’t hesitated to play true freshmen. Plus, we’ll have a new Oline coach (when will he be announced already?!?!) and he might have his own OL redshirting philosophies.
After reading The Blind Side, I’ve learned to appreciate Oline play. My guess is that he doesn’t start but he might not redshirt.

The Blind Side is awesome
but I’d still be really surprised if he didn’t redshirt. There’s a big difference between playing as a true frosh runningback and playing as a true frosh on the offensive line. And our interior line depth should actually be pretty good next year. I’d be willing to wager a lot that he redshirts next year.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
not sure where I read it (ESPNU Recruiting blog?). I’ll also add I think C requires some veteran thinking against mean mo fo’s that young Brazinski might not have faced in Jersey High School ball. Also, judging by his mug shot I think he needs to add more muscle and less chub.

Cal basketball may face treacherous conditions en route to Pullman
This has been one of the most severe winters ever in Washington. A locale known as Pigtail Creek received 100.9 inches of snow in December. Fish Lake had 153.9 inches. Some place called Waterhole was massacred by 192.9 inches ā thatās an average of more than 6 inches per day.
The city of Spokane was pounded with 61.5 inches of snow in December, an all-time record for any month dating back to when the National Weather Service began keeping such records in 1893. Almost all of that snow came in the final two weeks of December, and on Dec. 17 the city got 24 inches in 24 hours.
The first week of January brought 15 more inches to Spokane, including 8 inches Sunday night into Monday, causing more school and road closures and stories of roofs collapsing on homes and businesses.
The good news for the Bears ā and for those of us who are about to follow them up there ā is that the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday is a bit better. Predictions are for highs in the upper 30s on Wednesday with rain. More of the same Thursday, with the possibilty of snow at night.

And since then, the seasons have changed, how many times did it snow hard enough to basically shut down the city during those 12 years?

Now twice since 1991
This year (which was awesome – I got to cross country ski downtown to finish up my Christmas shopping) and once when I was a kid – 1993? 94? So twice in the last 17 years. It usually snows once or twice a year, which was great for me because I love winter. And July through mid October is really nice. But 40-50 degrees, constant rain, and daylight from 8AM-4PM gets old after 5 months. I played so many damn little league games in miserable conditions…
Anyways, having lived there exclusively for 12 years, and lived both there and Berkeley for the last 7, Berkeley is much more pleasant, even if we don’t get snow.

I realize that the following may sound a bit retarded.
First, let me say that I’m ecstatic with the amount of and quality fanposts/shots of late. It makes my miserable life in this Slovakian jail cell only that much better.
Second, let me remind everyone that we’re about to venture across a dry desert that takes 8 months to cross, and it’s known as The Offseason, and it is among the most treacherous places known to man. Many have not made it across.
Which brings me to a suggestion: remember to start saving save the posts for when we need it most, for instance, July, when the only sound that permeates the air is the buzzing of horseflies and the soft thwuck of bare, sweaty skin as it peels off vinyl seats. Thhwwwwuck.
Carry on.
