Fiesta Bowl Open Thread
Use this thread to discuss the Fiesta Bowl. The game starts at 5 PM Pacific Standard Time and is being broadcast on Fox. It pains me to say this, because I've never warmed to those continual runners up from the midwest, but Go Buckeyes! Beat The Longhorns!

Does anyone else dislike the Fox broadcasts? Their analysts are okay, but I really dislike the advertisers on Fox broadcasts. It all feels too much like the NFL (which I can understand, given their focus on the pros). I look forward to the year when ESPN/ABC has rights over the BCS games

I agree
Fox pieces together a college football crew for the BCS, while ESPN covers a majority of the games throughout the course of the season. Another positive about ESPN broadcasting the BCS is that (I’m not completely sure about this, just guessing) then games may be on ESPN classic. I presume games shown on fox don’t end up on ESPN classic, not that I always watch ESPN classic, it’s just that being able to see the Boise State Fiesta Bowl would be nice, or any other potential great games that happen in the BCS in the future.
Ohio St. is looking okay so far
Big 12 is looking less and less impressive (in my eyes, anyway haha).
I'm very much regretting...
My pick of Oklahoma in the title game…

big 12 unimpressive so far
this whole bowl season the conference has looked very mediocre considering all the hype
I hope there is some criticism of their weak nonconference schedules if the remaining Big 12 teams go on to lose their bowl games. It wasn’t until the bowl season that many of us realized how overrated these teams are.

Can’t it be both?

dude wtf
Georgia did zeppelin for their halftime show at the capital one bowl, Texas is sooo unoriginal
Not sure what the theme was,
They were shown playing the William Tell Overture’s finale and the can-can.

I don't think anything makes me more mad than those questionable late hit calls on the QB
GOD DAMN!
You ain't got it like Marshawn got it
Horrible late hit calls

Jim Tressel is terrible
So many penalties. And now they’re not even getting to the LOS in time for the snap. If McCoy wasn’t so bad they’d be down by 20 by now.
I’m beginning to think that the reason BCS bowls are getting crappy ratings is because teams never seem to play well in them. Other than USC pretty much every team has played below its potential.

Man I so want to play Texas next year in a bowl game
Colt McCoy is looking ordinary against a defense that got owned by USC. I’m less than impressed by him.
My TV isn’t working. Is there a live feed I could watch on?
Go Bears!

It’s like he thought even though Pryor was looking at the ball and jumping, that he didn’t believe the ball was actually coming.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
Still though
Syd and Darian are both short – but they’d never let a guy catch a ball uncontested. It looked like a game of three flies up where one of the guys doesn’t want to play anymore
Hydro, you should call Tedford
First play of the season, Riley throws fade route to Mansion, who stiffarms Maryland’s cornerback to the end zone.
by BearsNecessity on Jan 5, 2009 8:24 PM PST up reply actions
McCoy has been bad today
His throws have been either really long or really weak. He’s only done well on the cross routes to the middle of the field.
So what’s wrong with Chris Wells? I missed it. You’d think a heisman hopeful would help out unless he’s physically unable to.
At least this'll end Texas's hope for a split title
Win or lose, they have not been convincing at all.

Looks like the defense started it, and Pryor continued it. Bah.

Make the 2 pointer, and you’re up 6, which is only useful if TX misses an extra point
Miss the 2 pointer and if TX gets a TD you’re down three and can only tie with a FG
Kick the PAT and if TX gets a TD you can kick a FG to win
Norcalnick is right
And the Buckeyes only needed one or two quick completions after that backed-up-by-penalty kick-off to get into field-goal range.
Go Bears!

Brown is a tool...
Though I think McCoy is pretty badass. He’s been pressured much of the game, and much of the year, and still pulled off that drive. He made pretty much all of Texas offense this year.

True that.
I’m still biased though.

McCoy didn't deserve it for this one
Buckeyes handed it to him with their soft zone coverage.

Of course not… but the award should be given based on your body of work.. and what the frick sense does it make to NOT include the player’s most IMPORTANT work?
Makes no sense that Colt’s performance today of 40/58@71% and 3TDs doesn’t count. What if Bradford has even a better day and Colt had won the award weeks prior. Doesn’t make logical sense, that’s all.
oh yeah… Colt threw for 413 yards. Not that it mattered for the Heisman, but I think we’d kill for numbers like that.
The bowls are exhibition though
Except for the NCG. The regular season is the body of work which got you there.
There’s a Heisman for the bowl season, and that’s the National Championship MVP.
by BearsNecessity on Jan 5, 2009 8:57 PM PST up reply actions
Would you think the same if it was Best that was snubbed?
This is a nonsensical argument.
1) The soft coverage was the right coverage… would you have played MAN FREE on that down/distance/situation?
2) Heisman takes into account how far your team goes… no matter how good your player is, if you don’t get far in the rankings you don’t win… so what sense does it make to stop this “advancement” criteria at the end of your season?
3) The Heisman awards the best player in college football… so you’re saying it should only include the body of work in your CONFERENCE? What if someone from the WAC won the award and Colt had a perf like tonight… wouldn’t you complain?
Fuck Mack Brown and his brown nosing the voters… but I’m just saying the Heisman should be awarded after all the games are played.
No, not really. I don’t give a damn about the Heisman Trophy. It’s a silly award and a media-driven frenzy fest where QBs and RBs win 98% of the time. As good as Best has been this season, Alex Mack and Tau’ufo’ou have been just as valuable for him in opening up the holes he’s had to make his big gains.
If I were to go by performance from both regular season and bowls and give a Heisman, I’d give it to Oher from Ole Miss, and he wouldn’t win in a million years.

If this is the case, then why do you make judgments on who does or doesn’t deserve the award? You seem to care a lot.
Because the bowl season is totally separate from the regular season. They’re separated by four-six weeks. We’ve seen pretty good college players totally stink it up like Harrell and Crabtree, and players like McCoy struggle mightily. The variance for their performances is much higher. To extend the Heisman to the bowl season seems rather silly especially considering they award MVPs for these performances.
by BearsNecessity on Jan 5, 2009 9:27 PM PST up reply actions
As for the playing exclusively zone coverage…McCoy was the most accurate passer in the country, and you’ve played pretty good man free coverage the entire game. Why would you play off the receiver and allow him the chance to make the completion? He’s struggled throwing into coverage all game. Play man up, delay blitz him out of the pocket, etc. He was flustered anytime you rushed him in the pocket.
by BearsNecessity on Jan 5, 2009 9:10 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah and they were at the 25 yard line with 25 seconds left with two timeouts. Ohio State was way too charitable in their coverage.
by BearsNecessity on Jan 5, 2009 9:32 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah Ohio State’s D was really terrible on this final possession. Then again they’ve been terrible all second half.

Congrats UT
You barely beat a bumbling stumbling Ohio State team that stunk the joint in the second half. Now start whining about how you deserve a split title. Ugh.
So what's the CGB footing consensus for the National Championship?
I think I’m leaning Florida, but I could be convinced otherwise.

I tell yah, I had forgotten all about
that Mack Brown s.o.b. but after seeing his mug on the tv after the game…..I am not so thrilled with the Texas win.

Claim to the NC
This could be a huge mess. It really depends what happens on the 8th, but there could be as many as four teams with some sort of legit claim to the NCG.
Florida is really there on strength of winning the SEC and that win over Alabama. However, what team looked better against Bama, Utah or Florida?
Let’s say Oklahoma beats Florida in a really ugly game. Oklahoma deserves the NC by virtue of winning the game. However, Texas ended the season out with a win and they still beat Oklahoma on a neutral field. Utah, as mentioned, beat a really good Alabama team by a wide margin – much more than Florida did. Finally, USC will win the best team at the end of the season award for the third year in a row. Dominated Penn State, coupled with the Pac-10’s 5-0 bowl record, it’s gotta mean something. Of course, that brings up the Utah beat Oregon State which beat USC.
I really hope Utah wins an AP National Championship.
I have no new information on that at this time.
Who had the more impressive win over Ohio State though? Texas or USC?
by BearsNecessity on Jan 5, 2009 9:54 PM PST up reply actions
Ah, even better. More arguments!
And, seriously, USC would be favoured against any other team in the country right now. Hell, they probably (no exaggeration) would be favoured against the Detroit Lions.
I have no new information on that at this time.
Florida would probably be 1 point favorites against the Trojans on a neutral field. Other than that, agreed.
by BearsNecessity on Jan 5, 2009 9:57 PM PST up reply actions
I really have a feeling that Florida isn’t as good as people think they are, especially after Bama got exposed (not to put down Utah, though – as mentioned, they deserve a shot at the title in my book). Too bad they have Oklahoma to prove it against.
That said, when you have a bunch of one-loss teams (and one undefeated non Big Six team) that have legit claims to the title, either you have to accept that the winner of the BCS NCG is not necessarily the best team in the country, or you need a plus-one system. Especially since the title was decided by strength of the Big XII (overrated – see Texas Tech, Mizzou, and Oklahoma State) and the strength of the SEC, especially over Bama (overrated – see, well, Utah destroying Bama).
I have no new information on that at this time.
I really dislike Mack Brown
He seems to be everything wrong with college football. He’s like the George Bush of coaches – he’s got that well-practiced (but obviously fake) “aw shucks” schtick going, but his hubris and arrogance are unmatched.
And all this talk about Texas being #1 becaue they beat tOSU? The same tOSU that got destroyed by $C? What about Utah? I suppose their going undefeated and dismantling Bama doesn’t count, huh? And what about $C? They pretty well dominated every game and only lost a close one to a much better than assumed Oregon State. Oh, but that loss should knock them out of consideration, while the texasshole loss to texas tech is okay.
I really with Brown would just go away and stay away.
Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
