Feel free to use this thread for the Fiesta Bowl game thread.

I'm stuck in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.  But at least there is wifi here.

Here's a youtube video of Ray Maualuga putting on some antics on an unsuspecting Erin Andrews:

Some might consider such behavior funny.  I think it also verges on sexual harassment.  You be the judge.

I do feel sorry for Erin Andrews.  That poor girl hardly ever gets taken seriously and is rarely treated as a respectable interviewer but instead gets treated as a joke and a pretty toy.

This link is a little old but Tedford's new contract extension basically means he's not going anywhere

"We've really invested a lot of time and energy here, and this is the place that we want to be," Tedford said. "The commitment by the school and by me is something that I feel good about. When other opportunities come along, it makes it easy to say 'no.' "

Tedford didn't get specific but said "people have expressed interest" recently. The extension "makes it easy to put any of that to bed," he said.

Recently, Cal has been going for it a bit more on 4th down.  Cal fans have shown their approval with cheers.

Cheering is the last thing we want to do.

Remember, the offense needs to hear the cadence and snap count.  Crowd noise can easily create a false start which could ruin a 4th down conversion attempt.

Don't be a counterproductive Cal Football fan.  Don't cheer on 4th downs.

The Wiz summarizes the transfer controversy of Robert Marve

Earlier this week, quarterback Robert Marve announced his intention to transfer from Miami. Hurricane coach Randy Shannon granted the request, but with restrictions.According to Eugene Marve — the player's father — his son would not be allowed to transfer to another team in Florida or teams from the Southeastern or Atlantic Coast conferences. That's 27 teams.

Eugene wants his son to stay near the family's home in Tampa because he has prostate cancer.

Shannon has since softened the restrictions and will allow Marve to transfer to any SEC team other than Florida, Louisiana State and Tennessee. Miami alleges those teams were tampering with the quarterback, an allegation that Eugene says is not true. The in-state and ACC ban remains.

Finally, for those who really care to debate BCS vs. Playoffs, here's some Ohio State fan's idea to c

ombine them or something thus creating a 16 team playoff.

First off, we do away with Conference Championship games and end the regular season the weekend of Thanksgiving (all regular games scheduled this week would need to be pushed back).

After using tiebreakers to determine all 11 conference champions (please spare the argument about CCG, is it really fair that Oklahoma is playing Missouri instead of Texas/Texas Tech, or last year when LSU played Tennessee instead of Georgia?). Then we use a BCS type system to determine the 5 at large schools and then the seeding of 1-16.

Finally, here is a pretty nice scouting report on Terrell Pryor (complete with videos) from PB of Burnt Orange Nation (Texas blog).  PB is the guy that helped create Sports Blog Nation.

Though part of Pryor's success is attributable to the conservative-but-effective usage patterns called by the coaching staff, the highlight reels make clear why Pryor was more than a QB-in-training this season:

STANCE:  Pryor stands tall in the pocket, does exceptionally well keeping his body vertically balanced -- even when on the move -- and generally takes excellent advantage of his 6'5" height.

MOTION/RELEASE: Too often Pryor aims the ball, pushing instead of throwing the football. However, he almost always does well releasing the ball up high, minimizing tipped balls at the LOS and improving sight and trajectory angles for his receivers. His motion at its best features mostly sound mechanics, is repeatable, and on the whole consistent.

ARM STRENGTH: His best throws are crisp and strong, but as noted above a significant percentage of his passes are floaters that he more pushes than throws. For the most part, it's not a problem, as his judgment about what kind of zip the ball needs tends to be excellent. When he needs to gun it, he will, but he's content with floating passes when there's time and space.

ACCURACY: Pryor is an accurate thrower, both when stationary and on the move. He's demonstrated a dangerous (to the defense) ability to maintain the pass as an option while scampering from pressure and considering a keep. If he spots an open man while on the move, he's not much less accurate than when planted still. The Ohio State coaches mostly implemented a simple, quick-read passing scheme that helped Pryor stay comfortable as he got his feet wet, but his accuracy from the get-go has been good enough that the coaches have felt comfortable steadily adding more to the passing offense.

DECISION-MAKING: Mostly covered in the above, Pryor's decision making for a quarterback this age is well above average. In part because he's so comfortable using his feet to his advantage and in part because his on-field instincts appear to be so good, he's managed to thrive in the controlled setting -- and especially so when Beanie Wells is consistently demanding seven and eight man fronts.

Altogether, Pryor has capably guided the Ohio State offense by being a smart and efficient passer playing the supporting role. In discussing all his strengths, I probably underemphasized how sparingly the Buckeyes have passed the ball this year (Pryor didn't even finish the season with enough attempts to qualify for the passing leaderboards). Part of his proficiency and efficiency is a byproduct of only passing a dozen times per game, and in support of a strong rushing attack that occupied significant defensive attention. In a more expansive role, his numbers likely would dip.

Even so, it would be a mistake to mislabel him as a fortunately situated game manager; part of the reason defenses have to focus so much attention on the rushing game is because Pryor himself is a dual threat. Like many other supremely talented QBs, he creates his own opportunities for success.

Action: Cal announces a two-year contract extension for Coach Jeff Tedford (through the 2015 season).
Wilner foreshadows on 2009

Reaction I: The Bears must not have thought it was that big a deal, since they released the news at 8 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
Reaction II: The most interesting item, to me, was that the $$$ are coming from the athletic department’s self-generated revenue, not from Cal’s general fund. The Bears were smart to place that nugget prominently in their news release.
Reaction III: The whole thing is pretty much meaningless, in my mind, because if the Bears have the kind of ‘09 season that I expect, either: 1) Tedford will be off to the NFL, or 2) they’ll have to rip up the existing deal and give him a new one.

[emphasis mine]

I find this newsworthy because Wilner doesn’t hesitate to be overly negative towards Cal. And he is an A-1 jackass.

I also like Cal’s chances next year and I like that they’ll probably have a ranked opponent on the road that I think they can beat (minny) and USC at home early. USC’s 2009 schedule pre-Cal:

Sept. 5 San Jose State
Sept. 12 @ Ohio State
Sept. 19 @ Washington
Sept. 26 Washington State
Oct. 3 @ California

I’m hoping Sanchez, Mays, et al leave early giving us relatively inexperienced players at these positions. I think I’m hoping they easily route tOSU and take the crowd out early making that big OOC game not so educational for the inexperienced players. They also have 3 cupcakes so I’m sure they’ll be overcondfident and not ready for zOMG Best.

I take that bold part to mean he’s predicting a really good season.. as in the NFL will pay a him a lot to join the league or we’ll have to give him a better contract on account of a Rose Bowl appearance and high, high ranking

Maybe he thinks Cal is going 11-0 and then losing the Big Game to the great Coach Harbaugh. We go to the Rose Bowl but lose the Axe to the mighty Furd.

Recruiting Needs (JO)

This is a bit old but good nonetheless.

1. Wide receiver. The current group could end up being good, but you can never be too sure.

2. Defensive line. The Bears are strong at the top with Tyson Alualu, Cameron Jordan and Derrick Hill. Depth is questionable, however.

3. Kicker. Giorgio Tavecchio was serviceable during the second half of the season, but the Bears would be well-served to bring someone else in to compete with him and David Seawright.

Note to self, don't fight on BART train
The 22-year-old man killed by a BART police officer early New Year’s Day was lying face-down on the train platform, his hands behind him waiting to be cuffed, when he was shot in the back, a lawyer newly hired by the man’s family said Saturday.

That’s why fake cops shouldn’t have guns

That's why we should let the court of law decide who

was right and wrong in this situation. Is the attorney for the kid who was involved in a drunken brawl on BART going to say anything other than “my client was doing nothing wrong.” Funny I’ve never been in a brawl on the BART – seems like a pretty simple thing to not get involved in.

Fake cops yes, but do I believe this kid was an innocent victim, probably not.

by 33SwisherSweet on Jan 4, 2009 2:03 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Innocent victim or not, that does not mean a cop should use deadly force while the kid is lying face down waiting to be handcuffed. It will eb interesting to see if additional details trickle out; but, from the looks of it, things do not look good for the BART police officer.

Interesting comment over at EMFMV

# 4 Rick Crawford Says:
January 3rd, 2009 at 2:10 pm
There is an important issue to the conference vs. conference debate. It has to do with getting in the national championship game. Conferences with a championship game have an advantage.

The conference winner always has an extra win vs. a highly ranked opponent. This really helps in the computer rankings and usually helps in the polls.

Futhermore, because the Pac 10 plays a complete round robin, it’s harder for any team to go undefeated. The third strike against the PAC 10 is the lack of respect from the eastern press.

I suggest the PAC 10 become the PAC 12 by adding Utah and BYU and splitting into North and South divisions. The North would be the Washington, Oregon and Utah schools. The South would have the California and Arizona schools.

This could put the PAC 12 on a level conference playing field with the ACC, SEC and Big 12. Then we would not have futile arguments about the strongest conferences.

It this were in place this year, Utah would not be undefeated, and USC would be in the national championship game.

No, I don’t know this guy nor have I talked to him about the Pac-12.

Man, can Wilner ever be positive about Cal? Even when he’s saying something positive he has to slip in something negative. I wonder if Wilner and Ratto get together for drinks and Bears bitch sessions.

What do the Bears have to to get this idiots’ respect? How about being the only major sports team (save the Sharks) with a winning record in the Bay Area? Would that be enough for these tools?

JO…good stuff here:

Hall had an interesting moment when he was asked to make his decision during the live broadcast of the game. While a handful of other players made their college choices during the telecast, Hall simply narrowed his down. He began with five hats — Cal, USC, Alabama, Arizona and Oregon — on the table in front of him. He then removed the USC hat and Alabama hat, indicating he will no longer consider those schools. So it’s down to Cal, Oregon and Arizona.

Hall, who is from Tucson, Arizona, is considered a blue-chip recruit who could play either wide receiver or defensive back in college. Who knows? Maybe he could do both.

BruinsNation is up in arms over the Maulauga-Andrews video.

Link.

She is of course Erin Andrews and that’s Ray Maualuga, one of the poster childs of Pom Pom’s out of control Southern Cal program. Now if this was a UCLA player doing it to Erin Andrews, all the blowhards in both traditional and new media would be all over Rick Neuheisel and opine about how UCLA players are already losing their “moral compass” under “Slick Rick.” [See Molly Yanity in the Seattle Press-Intelligencer opining, “what Neuheisel didn’t have during his Washington tenure (1999-2002) was a moral compass”.]

In this case if somehow this clip made it to ABC broadcast, Brett Musberger would be gushing about “Ray Ray’s good humor” and Herbie would waxing poetic about how “Pete Carroll’s Trojans just love to have fun”

Am I missing anything else?

GO BRUINS.

Rishi's favorite writer has nice things to say

Peter King is soooo inane…

b. Thomas DeCoud … Thomas, Thomas, Thomas. You’ve been a standout special-teamer all season, and now, on a huge punt-cover play in the third quarter of a tight game in the biggest game of the year, you smash into the return man a full second before the ball gets to him. Talk about handing a free 10 yards to your foe.

f. Peter King Word Of The Week: Supercilious. Like DeSean Jackson was on his final punt return in Minnesota Sunday. Did you see that? He ran out of bounds like the thing wasn’t important, like he didn’t care. Weird.

Yeah Peter, or maybe the Eagles had a 9 point lead with 3 minutes left and he didn’t want to do anything stupid like fumble the ball.

Cal’s class is now ranked 28th in the Rivals recruiting class rankings… and we can only go up, really:

Low TV ratings supports case for college playoff?

LINK.

As far as BCS games go, only ABC’s airing of the Rose Bowl (12.6) has gained over last year, but the 2008 “Grandaddy of Them All” clocked in as third worst game since the Rose Bowl joined in the BCS. The Sugar Bowl only received an 8.5, and the Orange Bowl had it’s worst ratings ever with a pathetic 6.1, passing 2007’s matchup between Wake Forest and Louisville that came in just under 7.0.

With all of these ratings coming in lower and each year, you have to think about how many people would have watched the Orange Bowl if it was in fact a Playoff Game, and not just a crappy BCS matchup. The answer is obviously more, but for some reason, College Football and the BCS still have the wool pulled over their eyes when it comes to this topic.

To be fair, ESPN’s ratings have never been higher for its bowl showcases. But it’s clear that when it comes to the premiere games between the top teams in the land, the BCS has been a dud. Texas-Ohio State and Florida-Oklahoma will have good ratings, but they’d probably be much higher in a playoff format.

by BearsNecessity on Jan 5, 2009 12:52 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

That’s one conclusion. I’m more along the lines of “Low TV ratings supports case for fewer bowl games?” or “Low TV ratings supports case for abolishing the BCS?” myself.

That might’ve been one of the top 5 bowl games all year too!

Zoo, you think there are too many bowl games?

by BearsNecessity on Jan 5, 2009 1:08 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

There definitely shouldn’t be any more added. I kind of like how it stretches through holidays though

Yup. I think they should be limited to showdowns between conference champions if we are going to insist that they have to be something meaningful.

by zoonews on Jan 5, 2009 1:58 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yet in that case, you’re against meaningless games like the Emerald Bowl AND a playoff system?

Exactly.

by danzig on Jan 5, 2009 2:22 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Well… I’m against any system where voting and strength of schedule and other assorted crap is used to calculate that one game (or sequence of games) to determine a single champion for the media. I think the bowl system should be used for the various conferences to throw down. I’d even let the networks pick the match ups, provided all champions played somewhere against each other. Best team in the country should remain a bar fight. In such a world, if other teams wanted to play in invitational exhibitions such as the Emerald Bowl, well, whee. I guess that’s cool. But I can’t help but feel that more games dilutes the audience for the bigger games.

by zoonews on Jan 5, 2009 2:27 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

But doesn’t less games dilute the number of fans who care about the big matchups as well? Ratings are down because the big matchups aren’t compelling enough, which only happens via the BCS system (the Orange Bowl has been a dud three years running). I don’t see how the smaller bowls have any impact on television ratings; they just generally showcase more interesting games.

Possible. Speaking for myself, I’ve got bowl fatigue.

Though the press conference was delayed to a not-yet-determined time/date, USC DC Holt is officially going to U-Dub.

sweet

anything that knocks USC down is good news in my book.

how far this actually knocks USC down is the actual question, now isn’t it?

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

They’ll need to recruit CA schools better. Not happening with the 4 coaches in CA at the moment.

Well, that’s assuming Willingham is still the coach. A bucket of effluent could probably be more charismatic than Ty. I’ll definitely bet Sark and Holt will steal a few next year.

JO begins his year-end reviews by looking at Cal’s quarterback play.

Where that leaves Cal is — well — where it started. The Bears enter the offseason without a No. 1 quarterback — just like last season. Riley will battle Brock Mansion for the controls of the offense. Of course, Riley will have an edge in experience, but with experience also comes a bigger sample size. For all the excitement Riley generated with his performance in last year’s Armed Forces Bowl, perhaps some lost sight of the fact that it was just the second game he had ever played extensively in.

Mansion is talented. He came to Cal with some major accolades — just like Longshore and Riley. How he has developed during his two years in the program is hard to say. He spent the first year on scout team, where he looked excellent. As the third-stringer last season, he rarely got reps in practice, so it’s more difficult to get an accurate measuring stick.

Let’s not complete this analysis without mentioning that of course some of the inconsistency at quarterback wasn’t wholly the fault of the player. The Bears had an incredibly green group of receivers and their offensive line was beat up (never was that more apparent in the Oregon State game, where it’s hard to remember a single pass play in which Riley wasn’t under pressure).

Spring practice will be compelling. We will get to see much more of Mansion and see how he stacks up against Riley. And Riley will have had a few months to digest the past season, figure out what happened during the down times, and start fresh. Riley’s confidence could use a boost, too. By the end of the season, he certainly didn’t seem to be the confident — almost brash — quarterback he was when he had his chances last year.

2008 QUARTERBACK GRADE: C-
