New Offensive Line Coach
The worst kept secret in Cal Athletics is finally out of the bag: Steve Marshall, formerly of the Cleveland Browns, will be Cal's next offensive line coach. Sources within the athletic department confirm that Marshall will officially become the new line coach this weekend. Coach Michalczik obviously leaves big shoes to fill, but a guy who just held the same position for an NFL team certainly seems qualified to fill them.

He was the O-line coach for the famous Texans team that gave up 76 sacks on David Carr.

Ouch!
Then again, who’s to say that it wouldn’t have been 106 sacks with some other coach?

He's also improved the Browns line in thelast two years
from horrible to being considered very good…
Both of these resume facts depend a whole bunch on personnel too.
A lot of the players on that Texans line shouldn’t have even been in the NFL…
The Browns did add talent while he was coaching (Joe Thomas, most notably)

In this day and age when all the players seem to respond to coaches with street cred and who can relate to them and their ambitions, I think Marshall is a good choice; he’s coached in the NFL which gives him some cred with the players, and he’s coached a lot of younger guys in particular. And, his selection helped in some way with recruiting this current class of refrigerator-sized OL like Hasiak and Brazinski…I think both of them made reference to the new OL coach in their interviews.

They did mention him.
And he comes in with numerous resume highlights that make him seem almost OVERQUALIIFIED.
The Browns’ website has taken down his coaching history, so when it comes up on Cal’s site, I’ll post it. I do remember he was OL coach at UCLA (when they had Ogden), OC @ Texas A&M, and also part of Nick Saban’s many staffs…
Apparently, there is also a connection with Cignetti, and he comes highly recommended.
This cannot be said as much for Furd’s new hire… who was the assistant O-Line coach (so this is a promotion) and had some MIXED reviews while in the NFL

Oh and I think Furd's new hire was the assistant line coach to Marshall
on the Texans

I can't really look up the stats right now
but if memory serves me correctly, the Browns run game hasn’t been that great. Is this something to worry about? Someone wanna find the relevant stats?
Loves both the ambiance and the decor.
according to the official press release, the Browns allowed the 3rd fewest sacks in the NFL this year. not sure about running game, but everything changes for him now…..college ball, pac10, college kids, I don’t really care much about stats so much as whether he can work with college kids and teach them to open holes for our speedy guys.

The Browns were 26th in the league in rushing at 100.3 ypg. (BTW, the NFC Champion Cardinals were dead last at 73.6 ypg.) But the Browns also had the 9th fewest rushing attempts in the NFL this season — that’s what a 4-12 season will do to you, I guess.
In 2007, the Browns were 10th in the league in rushing, when Jamal Lewis had a much better year than he had this year.
Jahvid Best for Heisman, Doak Walker, and Party Yacht Captain!
He was the coach for both
