Bowl Game Blowout! V
Use this as an open thread for today's games.
What bowl?: The AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
Who's playing? Kentucky WIldcats vs. East Carolina Pirates.
When is it? January 2, 5:00 PM EST.
Where is it? Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee.
Why should you watch? Because you're not sure what the hell happened to the Pirates after beating Virginia Tech and West Virginia to open the season, and you love watching the SEC lose.
via www.nola.com
What bowl?: The Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Who's playing? #4 Alabama Crimson Tide vs. #6 Utah Utes.
When is it? January 2, 8:00 PM EST.
Where is it? The New Orleans Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Why should you watch? Because you want to see if Utah is for real, you enjoy the coaching stylings of Nick Saban, and you love watching the SEC lose. Even though they probably won't.
What bowl?: The International Bowl.
Who's playing? Buffalo Bulls vs. Connecticut Huskies.
When is it? January 3, 12:00 PM EST.
Where is it? The Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario.
Why should you watch? Because you wonder why anyone in Canada would be interested in these two teams, you'd probably rather watch the CFL instead, or you're Canadian. Eh?
What bowl?: The Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.
Who's playing? #10 Ohio State Buckeyes vs. #3 Texas Longhorns.
When is it? January 5, 8:00 PM EST.
Where is it? University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
Why should you watch? Because you love watching the Big Ten faceplant in big games, you're not sure what the hype is over Terrelle Pryor (is he really anything more than a bigger Juice Williams?), and you want to take notes and see if the Longhorns are more impressive than Oklahoma, Florida, or USC.
via www.gmacbowl.com
What bowl?: The GMAC Bowl.
Who's playing? #22 Ball State Cardinals vs. Tulsa Golden Hurricane.
When is it? January 6, 8:00 PM EST.
Where is it? Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama.
Why should you watch? Because you're not sure where Ball State is, you're happy to see that the bowl's sponsor is still solvent and eligible for funds from the Federal Reserve, and you want to see if Tulsa's offense is as good as they say.
via www.nmnathletics.com.edgesuite.net
What bowl?: The FedEx BCS National Championship Game.
Who's playing? #1 Oklahoma Sooners vs. #2 Florida Gators.
When is it? January 8, 8:00 PM EST.
Where is it? Dolphin Stadium in Miami, Florida.
Why should you watch? Because it's the national championship game, you want to see the mighty SEC fall, you want to see if Oklahoma faceplants in another big game, and if you're not interested in this game, then why are you even reading this?

Cotton Bowl open thread is the DBD
Switch here for the Liberty and Sugar Bowl (since these are the games being profiled!)
anyone watching the Liberty Bowl at all?
I mean, I’m not, but still.
Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...
ok, I was, but only until I found the Cotton Bowl on FOX

hahah, too true
well, it’s a nice break between the cotton and the sugar bowls. i guess.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
WFT?
ESPN just showed an ESPN360 commercial featuring Billy Mays.
"After review, it has been determined that the previous play was not reviewable"
The Pac-10: where quality officiating happens.
I watch a lot of ESPN and this was the first time I’ve seen it. How long has it been around?

at least since bowl season started

Cal-Zona stream?
Is there a stream for our bball game? Believe it or not, I’m more stoked about Pac-10 play starting than I am about the Sugar Bowl.
Liberty Bowl officials have missed at least two knees down on kickoff returns. These are Pac-10 levels of blindness.

Since I lost my 34 on T. Tech
I’m out, so would be even more happy to give up 30-something for the Utes
It's really early, but...
I don’t think the SEC uber-partisans on the ESPN and other CFB message boards could handle a bowl loss to a non-BCS team like this. Their entire worldview would be ruined.
The Bear Will Not Quit
The Bear Will Not Die
no one's talking about the game?
I’m watching the Nets game right now, actually. Going to switch over once this is done.

Alabama not good at coming from behind?
RollBamaRoll doesn’t seem to have much confidence in JPW’s ability to lead a team from behind.

Bama's been behind like three times this season
They haven’t been impressive; the other team pretty much had to crap the bed for them to get back in it.

I want to watch the Cal-Arizona game (and have been checking in from time to time)
but I can’t keep my eyes off of the Utes. They’ve looked damn near unbeatable.
Alabama cheerleaders
FAIL
Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...
Randle looked wild early on
Seems like he was trying to outplay his buddy Wise earlier, but I’m sure Monty spoke to him when he sat him down. He’s definitely looking really good so far.
...pick SIX!
poor Leigh Tiffin
And he was the kicker who delivered the Lawnmower the championship too.
Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...
I think it’s time Cal produced a new commercial, something more like this classic. The current one has been around since when, 2006?

zomg Nets to OT
Sugar Bowl still gonna have to wait.
Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...
VINCE 3 FROM 40 FEET OUT TO WIN
Whoops. Probably should have just gone to the game instead.
Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...
So who thinks Utah can hold on in the 2nd half?
It looked like the (presumably) stronger, more talented, better conditioned team was starting to wear the Utes down – But an 11 point lead is still tough.
I don't know if it's Montgomery or just young players maturing
But Cal is passing so much better than last year
If they hold on, it's a big win
A team in the Pac-10 hoping to make the tourney beats Arizona at home
Great drive for the TD
Now they need to get back to getting pressure and sacks to stop Bama’s offense
there's one
Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...
downtown freddie brown!
Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...
I vote no
Also, the Alabama offense doesn’t seem terribly creative.
Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...
Isn’t it fun watching players who don’t even get pac-10 schollies beat the S E C?
You ain't got it like Marshawn got it
I can't decide if it's more fun to watch the Big Ten lose or the SEC
Oh wait, I can. SEC.
Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...
SEC by far.
How will they dismiss a loss to UTAH in a BCS game?
"You motor boating son-of-a-bitch, You old sailor you!"
the same way they dismissed Georgia getting run off the field in the Sugar Bowl by West Virginia a few years ago
Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...
Yes, but this would be VERY different than losing to WV.
That being said, If ‘bama loses I’m sure the SEC partisans will come up with some excuse.
The Bear Will Not Quit
The Bear Will Not Die
Utah really has been great at making their tackles tonight.
"You motor boating son-of-a-bitch, You old sailor you!"
They've really impressed me in every phase of the game.
Tackling, pressure, big catches, running game. As much as I want to bash the SEC, I think this game says more good things about the Mountain West than bad things about Alabama and the SEC. But that’s good for the Pac-10 since we play MWC teams so much
If Utah wins, would you give them a #1 vote?
They ran the table in a stronger than usual MWC (featuring #11 TCU and #17 BYU; don’t forget, the Pac-10 went 1-4 against the MWC), beat Oregon St and Michgan, and (assuming they hold onto this lead) beat a #4 Alabama team that lost only to Florida.
If Oklahoma wins, I’d give Utah a #1 vote (after the Big 12 embarassed itself so far in bowl games). If Florida wins, I’d have to think long and hard about who to award a #1 vote.
"After review, it has been determined that the previous play was not reviewable"
The Pac-10: where quality officiating happens.
If I was an AP voter I would absolutely vote Utah #1
Protest vote against the stupidity of the BCS believing it can distinguish from 6 one loss major conference teams and one undefeated minor conference team. But the cool thing about Utah’s win is that you could make a legit, coherent argument in their favor anyway.
I at least have to consider them for #1
I’ll wait until after the NCG to decide, but our final blogpoll ballot may very well start with the Utes.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
If Florida jumped to #1 by beating ’bama, then why not Utah?

Fans attacking one another, attacking other SEC fans, attacking random visitors.
I love angry Bama fans. They’re the best.
They have descended into madness over there. It’s entertaining to see them attack their own supporters, though.

Just got back from the Cal Basketetball game
CBKWit should have more coverage up tomorrow, but I gotta, I’m impressed with this team. I really believe they can play with just about anyone in the Pac-10. Randle looks very, very good, and the offense as a whole looks smoother, with better passing and better spacing. They really get after it on defense, too, and their lack of size wasn’t too much of a hindrance because they did a really good job of getting in position underneath the basket. I think rebounds were even for the game.
We’ll know more after ASU on Sunday, but if you haven’t been paying attention to the Bears so far this season (and judging by the attendance tonight, a lot of you haven’t), now’s a good time to start.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Arizona State will be tough
They are manhandling Stanford right now.

I'm going to have to check out single game ticket prices for alums
Here’s hoping for more surprises and growth.
awesome for the bears!
the SEC is pissed…they lost to a weak conf. team….the bruins should be scared (and spiritless…their la counterpart is killing them! it’l be like the 1950s…gas is cheap, cal wins rose bowls, cal wins NCs in basketball and baseball, the SEC is racist, and we have world peace!…wait.
No clue what Oski is talking about, but here's how the Bruins come into play:
Conferences W-L
Pac-10……………….5-0
SEC …………………..5-2 (Florida remaining)
Big East …………….4-2
Big 12 ………………..3-2 (Tex and Oak remaining)
C-USA ……………….3-2
Mountain West …..3-2
Sun Belt …………….1-1
ACC …………………..4-6
WAC ………………….1-4
Big Ten ……………..1-5
MAC …………………..0-1
The ESPN conference trophy is based on win percentage, but don’t think the SEC fans will accept that. They’re already saying we’re tied because we won the same number of bowl games… in which case Bruins provide the head-to-head tie breaker (TENN).
If Florida wins, they’ll most certainly say they’ve actually won because they won more bowl games AND they sent more teams to bowls. This argument is not bad, but still faulty because the SEC has more schools (12) than us and more opportunities.
Actually both the ESPN win% method and the SEC’s ‘make up your own method’ methods are BS.
The best way to do this is:
Component #1: % of teams in your conf that become bowl ‘eligible’ (not necessary invited)
Component #2: win % of your teams that play in bowl
Component #1 + Component #2 = Bowl Superiority Coefficient (highest number wins)
This method equalizes the politics of being bowl eligible yet not being invited, difference in the number of tie-ins, the number of schools yet also includes a bit of human adjusting.
SO….
Pac10 = .150
SEC = .141 (assuming Florida win)
Wait, does the winner of this award get anything?

Oski was pretty drunk at the game today. He took a ‘zona fan’s hat and stomped it on the ground.
All I could do was laugh and stop myself from joining him.

Oh god. I just read through the Bama gamethread. There’s that one fan who cannot accept that Utah might just be better than Bama and that if he accepted that fact, then it would be a given that Utah was better than Florida too…
I feel like I’ve lost more brain cells than if I had hit my head against the wall for 15 mins. Although I have a headache as if I did.
Has anyone watched this International Bowl?
Buffalo 20, UConn 17. Buffalo is 1-9 on 3rd downs, has under 100 yards of total offense. Donald Brown’s at 220…and UConn is losing because they’ve turned the ball over FIVE TIMES.
I mean UConn

You’re in the top 50 in the nation. That’s pretty impressive… I think this is just about over though.

Wow. I didn’t even notice. You can’t be that far behind though.
I don’t have many points left in play though; I think I’ll probably drop down to top 200 by the end.
