so Linehan turned down the OC job for the Niners…that sucks…you don’t hear to often of families turning down the Bay Area for the fabulous St. Louis suburbs. Of course, the Yets and Bucs jobs are still open…
In other news, one Bryant Young will be a D-line grad assistant at Notre Dame…me thinks BY will be successful in this role too.
Lastly, Joe Montana was said Kurt Warner was a HoF shoe-in…he might be, but I was surprised by that. I wonder if he’ll wear gloves to give his speech in Canton.

Yeah, I’m trying to tune him out… all the tvs here are ablaze. And this damn cheering.

Okay, the volume is finally off. Now we can go back to more important news, like how much Obama can bench or watching him play bball or examining the options of the puppy he will purchase.
I declare you Sanchez.
Friedman?????? Are they really still teaching Smith and Friedman at Cal?
Dude….Milton Friedman is only used in the realm of conservative politics… not on WallSt or in economics. The Chicago school has been discredited long ago. So has Benjamin Graham’s assertion that maximizing shareholder value cures all… total disaster…. (although his value investing ratios are still relevant).
Free market guys are much more of a mixed bag now… they’re much more towards the center.
You mean the Cato Institute is rolling over in it’s grave. If you want to read intelligent free-market tax/econ policy, seek out Cato materials. If you want to read truly intelligent and centrist tax and foreign policy, read Brookings and New America Foundation.
If you want to destroy the world cuz you’re just pissed off at muslims, read New American Century, American Enterprise Institute, AIPAC… but seriously…avoid all the Jewish and Christian hawks…. those guys are frickn crazy as shit and don’t give a shit about you or our country. They care about assuaging their anger.
Politics, economic thought and the markets are all pendulums. They swing back and forth between extremes… the best times for the most amount of people are when they are passing by the middles…. oh yeah.. and when we’re not at war… historically that is.
No one believes in pure Milton Friedman just like no one believes in pure Keynesian theory (unless you’re an academic or an idealogue).
That said, his theories and Chicago school theories are not discredited at all. Supply-side economics still has its believers and its backers, both on Wall Street and in economics. You may not believe it, people may be skeptical, but the beliefs are definitely valid. I will agree on with you on what CATO puts out – I like a lot of their works.
As for foreign policy, come on, you know that it’s much more than being “pissed off at Muslims” or wanting to “destroy the world”. Reasonable and logical people can be hawkish or dovish. Foreign policy is not on revenge or anger in the US (Israel right now, maybe). If it were about anger against Muslims, I think we could do a lot better than Iraq.
I declare you Sanchez.
Umm…most hawks at AEI are quite crazy. They are neocons to the core and are a good deal of the reason Iraq became such a clusterfuck
by BearsNecessity on Jan 20, 2009 10:20 AM PST up reply actions
Who the hell is Keynes? Never heard of him. jk.
From where I sit, I believe in markets… but free markets…? shit, I know first hand (er, second hand) that it creates big time problems for common Americans.
From a human or people perspective the Chicago school is done…. it’s over. If you really believe in what completely free markets and no regulation means you’re on the board of directors of a corporation of some kind… but even they don’t believe in it in the privacy of their own home. Ask Cato about the WOrld Bank and South American countries/ eas asian countries.
Next time you’re talking to a guy that drops the word “Friedman” word on you… ask them to explain what “negative externalites” are… look naive and try to elicit an answer. Markets naturally iron out inefficiencies right? But what about the efficiencies that cannot be calculated at the same time profits are calculated…. really…. think about it? What if there were a 2 year delay… 5 years… 10 years?
This leads to swings where vast swaths of common people are included in “value destruction”… value destruction and write downs are just adjustments people like you and I make on spreadsheets…. but they really have human costs…. and aren’t those the REAL kind of costs?
This is the disconnect.
Plus… you’re right, of course, I know foreign policy is not all about anger.. I’m pretty familiar with petro-politicsand it’s affect on currency/trade/econ…. which is why I supported the Iraq war at first… but only on the condition it increased production of Iraqi fields and increased competition with Iranian/Russian natural gas etc…etc….
My question now is this – how are you defining free markets? In theory, unregulated free markets should work, but obviously they don’t. No one supports not having regulation and the like. I think most free marketers support less regulation and would rather leave certain aspects to the market fix or control. I lean centre-right, so I won’t really support privatising social security or a 100% flat tax, but I can see the merits of these and they are definitely not without logical support.
A lot of my issues with Obama’s plans (assuming he puts forth what he’s promised) is that too much meddling in the wrong places will make things worse. That’s where my issue comes in.
On foreign policy, Iraq is still a touchy issue – a lot has changed, but the War on Terrorism in general is not motivated by anger. It really is about keeping America safe. Whether we’re doing it in the right way is debatable though.
I declare you Sanchez.
….wow….you have thought about this issue before!!
I can tell because the natural issue everyone comes to is… DO WE, OR CAN WE… truly have free and totally efficient markets that realize externalities in real time… including future ones??? cuz if we can, it would theoretically solve pretty much all our econ probs.
Just like bluffing in poker… mathematical models cannot account for things like favoritism, nepotism, corruption, bribery, blackmail, extortion… or plain… HUMAN factors and ‘asymmetric information.’ Read a great book called “Inventing Money” about LTCM. Even Friedman admits this and discusses negative externalities that cannot be predicted… but glosses over them saying that the small probs they create aren’t worth addressing… he forgets to mention the small prob that are jeopardizing your FUTURE profits and not accounting for ALL the costs… including the human ones… and things that can be considered in “is it worth it” considerations.
Read, the Art of Contrarian THinking… it’s a crap, old ass book they force you to read in biz school, but shows you how to take advantage of human factors creating inefficiencies in markets… really, it’s the essence of successful options and currency trading. The lesson is, no matter what…even in electronic clearing and program trading… there are human decisions and even the smallest ones can create price discrimination… which breeds value destruction… LTCM…. blah blah… you know.
Not sure if you’re being sarcastic, but I completely agree – externalities can’t be glossed over or shoved aside. I think the prime example is global warming, because those dont’ affect your company at all, but they have a huge effect, obviously, elsewhere.
I’ll check out your recommendations, just as soon as I finish reading “Damn It Feels Good to Be a Banker”, so I can pine for the good old days of elitism.
I declare you Sanchez.

Ha…ha….The theory for efficient markets works if ALL the players are rational… meaning computers… even if ONE of those players were human, it would create chain reactions that would kill everything.
Ever watch Matrix 2? Remember the Architect talking about the remainder to the equation that he couldn’t get rid of? He’s talking about the human stock markets with program trading!
Just as long as humans are involved, economics, politics and trading are practices in the arts… and optimal outcomes are unreasonable expectations… so dynamic and constantly changing theories are the way to go… kinda like our system of government… switching between conservative and liberal… whatever fixes the problems at the time and considers human error into the future (i hope)… Kinda like the BCS and polls (JUST KIDDING!!!! no need to get into the BCS shit)…
Apt analogy. Too much of the same thing ends up disrupting the market. Clearly The One is needed to restore balance. I’m guessing danzig will be one of the twenty something chosen to rebuild Zion.

I read the Berkeley Daily Planet (or whatever the hell that heap of trash is called) on BART yesterday. Pissed the hell out of me.
There were articles and editorials on Obama.
The first one ended with a lady saying “I will fly my American flag for only the second time in fifty years” after raving about Obama. Yeah, I’m sure that’s the kind of person you want on your side.
The second article was about Obama’s “fist bump” with his wife. He credits Obama for popularizing the fist bump, calling it a “Barack Bump”, then evidences its popularity, raving that “athletes, entertainers are all doing the Barack Bump”. This is of course before you realise that everyone in the world has been doing the fist bump. Athletes have done it forever. All Barack did is do it as a professional, so now, we see executives doing a fist bump in the lift, which now makes the fist bump all the less legitimate.
Ugh. Enjoy Inauguration, but we live in the same world as we did yesterday.

It’s hypocritical, but I get it. I think you should give the man a chance, just like I and so many other pissed off liberals did in 2000. I also think that being a wet blanket today is incredibly shortsighted.
40 years from now, when your grandchildren ask you where you were and what it was like when we inaugurated our first black president, feel free to to tell them that you were pissed off that other people were celebrating so much and you disagreed with some of his policies which may or may not have been mentioned explicitly or implicitly during his address. I will try to focus on what it was like to actually live through and experience a monumental instance in our country’s history.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
See, that is my issue.
Obama is black. It was historic. He is the president.
I don’t care. I honestly do not care about race. I don’t think the fact that he is half-black makes him immune to criticism. I did not feel an obligation to vote for him because “something bigger is at play” or any of that nonsense.

I hope my grandparents weren’t sitting around watching the moon landing and thinking, fucking Kennedy, that peace corps takes up too much money without enough oversight.

My complaints about you guys boil down to two things:
1) You’re not recognizing the gravity of this event because he’s for the other team. I think this is petty.
2) You’re criticizing him and not standing behind him when for 8 years we’ve been told that to disagree with the president is unpatriotic. This whole change vs. Clinton people meme is silly.
Running a government is a massive undertaking, and it makes sense to bring in people with relevant experience. Since Clinton is the only Democratic president in the last 28 years (before today), pretty much any Democrat with past executive branch experience is going to be a Clinton administration alumnus.
Whether or not we get any “change” will depend more on what they do than whom they’ve worked for in the past.

I certainly didn’t relish in picking apart his every move nor did I crap on him before, during, and after every move. Thus, the fundamental difference between us. I want leaders that do positive things for the nation regardless of their party affiliation. You want to argue.
Second that
I was pretty pissed at the way the 2000 election was handled, but I did not start undercutting Bush from the moment he took office. I thought he was a boob, yeah, but I wasn’t bagging on him and hoping he’d fail from the start or looking forward to 2004. I wanted him to do well.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
Sure I complained. By then Bush had used terrorism as a catch all to batter everyone who disagreed with any of his policies or practices; if you were pissed that he and his administration lied repeatedly leading up to the war in Iraq, you were an unpatriotic traitor. I can go on and on.
But that’s not the point. By 2004, Bush already had 4 years in office, so I wasn’t undercutting him before he started – I was disagreeing with what he had done. In 2012, if Obama has really fucked things up, by all means, go ahead and complain, bash him all you want. But for now, give the guy a chance, like I and many others did for Bush in 2000.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
I’m not undercutting him. Like I said, if he comes out with a proposal, I will criticise it only if I don’t agree with it or if I see fault.
If he does something worth praising, I will praise him.
I declare you Sanchez.
You have been complaining and criticizing him all day without at all recognizing the gravity of today’s events.
Sure, it doesn’t have any impact, because non of the comments made here do, in terms of national politics. But you’re still complaining and whining nonetheless. Maybe you just have a different definition of support than I do.

Interesting thoughts from the Economist on Obama’s Surgeon General appointment.
SHOULD the post of America’s top doctor be filled by a smooth-talking television star? It might soon be. Rumours are swirling that Barack Obama wants Sanjay Gupta, CNN’s chief medical correspondent, to serve as America’s next surgeon-general.
But Dr Gupta may yet prove a clever choice, for three reasons. First of all, he is not merely a pretty face. He is a qualified neurosurgeon who practises his craft and holds a post at Atlanta’s Emory University. Second, doctors with roots in the subcontinent are greatly over-represented among the country’s medical establishment but have long felt neglected. Elevating a prominent Indian-American may help Mr Obama court America’s medical lobby, which has traditionally been hostile to reform.
But the biggest reason to think Dr Gupta may succeed is the fact that the only real power the surgeon-general has is the use of his bully pulpit to promote public health goals, such as healthy eating and stopping smoking.

The good news: The nonconference slate is solid but not overwhelming with two foes from BCS conferences. The bye after playing Oregon and USC back-to-back could come in handy, however those games go. And if the Bears surge early and beat the Ducks and Trojans, the schedule sets up for a run at the conference crown.
The bad news: The Pac-10 opener is at Oregon, a critical matchup, and it comes a week after a long trip to Minneapolis. Then USC comes to town the following weekend. That’s a rugged stretch that could define the season before its much into October. On the other hand, the relative weakness of the final seven games could hurt the Bears if the are jockeying for position in the national rankings.

Defensive end Devon Kennard (Phoenix) reportedly received a home visit from Jeff Tedford last night. According to the Arizona Republic, Kennard will host two of USC’s defensive coaches tonight and then Texas coach Mack Brown on Thursday. Kennard, considered one of the nation’s top prospects, has narrowed his search to Cal, USC and Texas.
The Republic’s update also notes that Kennard won’t announce his decision until Signing Day on Feb. 4.

2 defensive coaches but no petey…big time athletes like the real deal. If he chooses Texas it’s still a victory for Cal, albeit one of lesser proportions.

Head Coaches are allowed only one in home. PC was in a couple of weeks ago. I think Mack was also there previously so this is probably more of his assistants showing up.
Did anyone see the Australia commercial during the inauguration? I’m not talking about the movie Australia, but the advertisement commercial for the entire country. It was, pretty well done. Very intriguing and sort of mystical. I liked it.

Australia is a mystical land filled with natural awesomeness, beer, horrible food and lot and lots of what we would call “rednecks”.
Ad campaign based on the movie “Australia.”
That has not stopped Tourism Australia, the government body that spins the country to potential visitors, from pouring A$50m ($33m) into a campaign linked to the film. Big hopes are riding on this. As a long-haul destination, Australia has been straining to build its visitor numbers in recent years: 5.6m visitors this year, unchanged from 2007.

Dude, I really am having trouble understanding why you fuckers are still here today. Today is a historic day. We’ve taken over a new land, we’ve added to our empire. This is a time to celebrate. At CGB North!
And yet you are here whining and bitching about whether or not you were previously whining and bitching (I’m looking at you, The Maharg). Nobody gives a fuck about your political beliefs. We get it, The Rishi, you are a Republican and all those facebook status mesages about how “so and so has been waiting for today for 8 years” upset you. We get it, TwistNHook, you are a little bitch. A tiny dicked little bitch.
So, and this is to all of you, shut the fuck up and get back to work imperializing our new colony!

From Sunday’s Chronicle, likely already posted,
“We have to learn how to handle success,” said Jamal Boykin, who had a career-high 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists. “I know we were all feeling pretty good about ourselves this week. That can have an impact.”
“We didn’t really focus as a team in practice all week, and it came back to bite us today,” Randle said.
This seems to be a common theme in Cal athletics. Is an unfocused week into (arguably) a letdown game common to all non-elite teams, or is this deflating experience uniquely Californian?
BTW, the invasion has been a complete success. I am now “Tyrannical King of UC Eugene” according to the way bottom of AtQ. As part of my puppet regime all current mods shall stay in place there. I decree it. So, it shall be.

I posted this on the other DBD, but just wanted toput it here, too. Regarding “invading” another SBNation-State:
To be honest, I’d just like to take this slowly, because I’m not sure how many blogs would appreciate a bunch of random Cal fans coming on and talking random inanities in a post that goes up 400 comments etc etc etc. I picked AtQ, because we have a great relationship with them and I knew they wouldnt delete anything or freak out. Before we do any more “invasions” lets totes discuss it in depth. Or at the very least discuss it.

I’m going to a random blog, I dare you all to find me! No checking my profile though. That’s cheating.
No, I’m not The Maharg but thanks for thinking of me so highly.
How…how could you? How long has this “relationship” with AtQ been going on?

The DBD at AtQ has five more (four after this comment) comments on their DBD than we do. Is this something we should be concerned about? Are they going to use those numbers to declare independence from us? Maybe we should bribe them with some tax-free tea or something.

Oh Sweet Jesus
Ratto has a blog…“And the Horse You Rode In On.”
Born before most of you, Ray Ratto has been a burden to those in the Bay Area journalism community since 1973. He has worked several places, and they weren’t any happier about it than he was. He has been at The Chronicle since the merger of 2000 and plans to stay at least until a week from Thursday. He is married with two children, but they have asked to have their names kept secret for obvious reasons. His mood today is: Bitter, with a hint of shame.

All subjects are fair game, except of course for figure skating, which is annoying on far too many levels to compile here. Whatever the subject, though, we can assure you that this won’t end well for either of us, so try not to get too angry about it.

I get home from work and CGB has expanded?
But seriously though, everything that was good about DBDs went to Addicted to Quack and everything awful about the DBD stayed here (I’m looking at you ‘arguing about politics on a sports blog’ people!)
