Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

WBD: 1.10.09 & 1.11.09 - What to do w/ no CFB

Well...hopefully we get those all-star game bowls up and rolling soon.

You Utah fans (Rishi) migh enjoy Block U (Utah's SBN blog).  They're not as cool as us but I've posted there a few times and they're nice guys (except MeanBobMean).

Arnie's trying to give gov't officials 3-day weekends...

The planned closures follow Schwarzenegger's Dec. 19 executive order that state workers must take two unpaid days off each month between February and the end of June 2010.

Nibs Rice (who?) is being inducted into Pac-10 HoF...he's Cal's winningest coach.

Salmon's not doing too hot...

Sharks have won 30 games (!)

Harbaugh might be looking at the Yets...I bet the "Harbaugh" name is near an all-time high right now.

That's all I got for now...so dump away!

And I hope nobody around here needs their licence renewed...

I’m currently working for the state and facing the ~10% pay cut. Arnie’s not too popular around here, since this is in addition to threatened layoffs and the whole ‘national minimum wage’ thing from late summer. Following California politics is unbelievably depressing.

I don’t believe so, because its about when the suit is filed, I think. So, unless they waited until the last possible day and then tried to file it, but the ct. was closed, then maybe.

But what I do know is that out here, the Courts are super backed up. Lets say you filed something in early dec. EARLIEST possible date is late Jan (earliest!). So, now your date all of a sudden doesnt work, because everybody is dark. Well, your hearing is going to be continued to the next available date, which might be a month or so later.

Moreover, jurisdiction requires notice. Lets say you notice everybody for a date, but then it gets continued because the Courts are closed. Well, normally if it gets continued without a hearing its OK, bc the judge announces the new date briefly. But if theres no morning calendar, nobody would know.

Just a lot of problems with scheduling. Something that seems minor, but is a LARGE part of my job.

Please disregard the above ramblings as those of a clearly delusional fan.

yeah…if I’m not stepping on rags’ toes I’ll post something up this offseason. Some might be thinking…why should I learn? My answer:

- rugby is an old school, international game that requires extreme toughness. You have to know that when you step on the field, your femur could be broken. I haven’t played football, but I’d imagine one might feel invinceable with pads/helmet on. No such thing in rugby.

- Cal is hella good. I’m surprised ESPN hasn’t come out yet.

- Believe it or not, novices can join an adult rugby club! They’ve got one in Berkeley. How’s this for an intro? It’s a great way to get in shape.

- Chicks dig rugby players…they like the parties.

- EA Sports has a rugby video game out…it’s awesome!

Jake Curtis on CFB

Rishi should like this…

Which brings us to Boise State. The Broncos will start next season ranked somewhere around No. 15, and they open with a home game against Oregon, which also should be ranked. If Boise State wins that game (and the Broncos are 19-0 at home when ranked) and goes through the regular season unbeaten (as it has three of the past four seasons) and if no more than one team from BCS conference goes unbeaten (as has been the case the past three seasons), then … well, you can see where this is going.

Jimmy hats:

USC rules: The Trojans finished ranked in the top four for the seventh consecutive season, a significant achievement when dynasties are presumed dead but still a long way from Florida State’s 13 straight top-four finishes from 1987-99.

Tedford’s still (relatively) cheap:

Steve Sarkisian, who is 34 and has never been a head coach, will get a guaranteed $1.85 million a year as Washington’s head coach, about the same as Jeff Tedford’s guaranteed income at Cal. Lane Kiffin, who is 33 and was fired for insubordination after going 5-15 in his only head coaching job, will make about $2 million at Tennessee next year.

Tedford’s the highest UC paid employee…will the Regents approve Kiffin or, if this starts to get out of hand, Stoops money?

I do want to say about the AP poll: there are nine 4 loss teams ahead of Cal, and 5 three loss teams ahead of Cal. Of those teams, 5 had the same wins against top 25 oposition (one of which was Oregon, who we beat). There were three who had one win against top 25 opposition, and 6 who had NO wins against top 25 opposition. But the Bears were ranked behind all of them. It is a joke.

would 12-0 Cal make it to a the NCG in 2009 (2010)…USC would if they played an identical schedule…but I’d bet they’d go with a 12-1 SEC/Big12S team…of course Boise St’s knocking on the door too…non-USC Pac10 teams get no love…

the key this next year is (obviously) consistency on offense and an effective passing game (not just QB play). Frustratingly, we won’t know if this until next fall (JO: “Not much to report in practice today”).

I think they might only face two legit Top 25 teams next year

Minny will prolly not be ranked at the time we play them since they tanked this year…they might as the season evolves though. Ibid Maryland.

The keys to Ore. St were it’s Oline and Dline…I doubt they can replace both to 2008 level. Me thinks this is a 4 loss team…maybe ranked but likely 26-30 when it’s all said and done.

Oregon’s tough to read…I’m not quite jumping on the bandwagon yet…we’ll see how @ BSU goes. Likely Top 25.

USC is a Top 10 team…maybe Top 5.

Considering Tebow & McCoy say they’re coming back, I think it’s unlikely undefeated Cal goes to NCG in 2009…undefeated USC yes…undefeated Oregon probably because they have two OOC opponents that appear to be “quality” in BSU and Utah. It’s dangerous though…if BSU drops one to say San Jose St or Utah almost loses to New Mexico than these wins don’t look so hot.

Sandy Barbour should pray to Bak Bak that Maryland wins the ACC and goes to the Orange Bowl (like Cincy did with the Big East). The ACC’s better than the Big East though (I think) so this highly unlikely. We’ve got two “A-level” opponents who are really at the B/B+ level right now.

What if Minn & OSU have nice years and they are ranked at the end of the year, our resume will be pretty darn good if we beat two top ranked team and two lower tier teams – true I don’t think we’d get the NCG, but you never know. Look where Utah got and they played… well you get the picture.

I think the announcer for the UCLA-USC game said “BOOM THO” when Taj Gibson slammed a monster jam.

What is this BOOM THO you speak of?

I, too, am stunned and chagrined to hear that CaliforniaCMB has not heard of one of the internets oldest and most respected memes. It’d be like not knowing what “All Your Base” is.

Please disregard the above ramblings as those of a clearly delusional fan.
