New Year's Day Bowls Open Thread

We apologize for being late on the ball here.  My excuse is that I was up buying fried chicken from a gas station at 6 in the morning.  Which was AWESOME!  But that's neither here nor there.  Anyway, use this post to discuss all the crazyness of today's games.  Follow the scores live here, too.

Hm

Is Favre the jerk or is it Thomas Jones for calling him out?

by LovinBlue on Jan 1, 2009 12:12 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I vote Jones. I don’t know if Favre should be considered a joke for still trying to play. Being a bad player doesn’t make him a jerk, it just makes him a bad player.

Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...

by yellow fever on Jan 1, 2009 12:20 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I actually meant it as he was kind of a jerk to his teammates throughout the season. But yeah, throwing a teammate under a bus is more of a jackass move.

by CaliforniaBone on Jan 1, 2009 12:31 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Favre is definitely both a jerk and a joke. Everyone hates him! He should go away and live under a rock, lol…….

I feel very conflicted. I want USC to win so the Pac-10 can go 5-0, but I would love to see USC lose (even though I picked them with 33 points).

Never discount the incompetence of Clemson this year. The score is already up to 21-20. I’m disappointed Nebraska couldn’t convert an interception on the Clemson 10-yard line into a touchdown, but they still have a good chance to win.

No way they can drop soft zone coverage like they usually do. He’s way too accurate with the ball; they’re going to have to do lots of man up, especially on Damian Williams.

No way Sanchez isn’t a first rounder after this clinic. Honestly, this has always been his potential. I hope he leaves. It may work even more in our favor that they’re losing their entire defense. He won’t have the same ideas as Leinart.

It's in his best interest

USC won’t compete for a national title next year barring a meltdown in the SEC or Big 12 losing nine defensive starters. The best he can hope for is the Rose Bowl.

by turkey on Jan 1, 2009 3:56 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’ve been skeptical of Sanchez all year because of his turnovers (especially fumbles). I thought he didn’t have the best decision-making skills, but this game has shown me the light. I am very impressed with him. I hope he leaves after this year (so Cal has a better chance at the Pac-10 crown).

Also the QB class is absolutely disgusting

I watched that Clemson QB today who’s supposed to be top 10 material. He looks like a Ryan Leaf combustible mess.

Sanchez would be in the top 10 almost immediately. He’s a game-changer, just as good as Palmer.

Then again, Sanchez only had to hand it off in the second half of his games because his team was so dominant.

No, he definitely did. His team wasn’t nearly as dominant as it was during Sanchez’s years. They had a lot more D-1 talent those years. This year, I think only he and his WR. Maybe 1 defensive player.

by danzig on Jan 1, 2009 5:04 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Only based on this game

Stunt with delayed blitz… or double stunt… USC’s OL does a great job with assignments but when confronted with picking who to cover, they have trouble and it neutralizes their size. Sanchez has a fast release, but it’s still better to pressure him b/c he’ll pick apart zones.

PSU’s two best plays on D, including a sack on Sanchez, came from stunts with angle blitzes. We should do the exact same thing with our smaller/faster LBs… Kendricks and Mohamed should be let loose. The corner blitzes don’t work with Sanchez’s fast read and release.

On O: Riley should run on 1/5th of his plays to keep the deep route open. Plus USC is weak with the boots and rollouts… the FB is important but our WRs have to come back and improvise.

On defense, our DBs have to have the freedom to choose between run/slant support vs deep/go routes but mostly they have to play ‘bend but don’t break’ and let USC kill themselves.

Play perfect with no drops on offense and we win.

Rose Bowl is NCG next year?

Watch, Cal goes 11-1, wins the conference, and can’t get into the Rose Bowl because it’s the championship game. Not that I’m predicting that will happen, but it would be appropriate given our streak of consecutive years without a Rose Bowl.
