I’m surprised how quickly they’re moving with the removal. We might have this finished by this weekend.
At least 8 trees are down so far...
…according to someone who just left the site.
And I’m pretty sure there’s no sound on the feed ‘cause it’s from the helicopter, as opposed to the ground.

look'n a little threadbare right now...
they used to be pretty well hidden in the limbs.
So uh, just a thought
who has to clean up all the crap on the ground once the trees and treetards are removed? what an ef’d up job!
the contractor who is building the new building
would be in charge of that. They would expect to have to do a bunch of clean up.
and they will likely do it with a loader and and dump trucks.
Oh. My. God.
I just got home. THE TREES ARE COMING DOWN!!! ITS MUSIC TO MY EARS!!!!!

Save the Oaks Updates:
Number one, this morning.
Dear friends,
Swarms of UC police have arrived at the Oak Grove this morning, along with workers. Tree-sit supporters say it looks like they may be preparing to cut the trees at any moment.
PLEASE come to the Oak Grove. We need your energy, your support, witnesses….
Your friends from the grove
Number two, about an hour later:
Dear friends of the Oak Grove…
Update: UC police moved in this morning and cut many limbs and branches of the redwood tree and other trees surrounding the redwood… They are continuing to cut. They have yet to attempt to clear-cut the whole grove. We will send an update if anything major develops. In the meantime, your support at the grove would be appreciated.

A day after winning their battle in court Thursday, UC Berkeley gave Memorial Stadium tree-sitters a 72-hour warning Friday morning that their days in the branches were nearing an end.
UC Berkeley spokesperson Dan Mogulof said that though the university had given the tree-sitters a previously negotiated notice promised before any action against the treesitters, "by no means does it mean we are preparing for a forcible extraction in 72 hours."
The Friday morning task of the arborists, he said, was to further isolate the tree-sitter and prevent reinforcements from reaching them from other trees.
Mogulof said the university is not prepared for the immediate commencement of construction activities other than site clearance.

Daily Californian: TREES BLEED TREE BLOOD!
Four to five trees have been cut down today in the oak grove near Memorial Stadium, UC Berkeley officials said this afternoon.
Dan Mogulof, the campus’s executive director of public affairs, said that arborists will continue to remove trees until late tonight. At about 4 p.m., a tree at the south end of the oak grove next to Memorial Stadium was removed.
At least four tree-sitters in a nearby tree were visible from the ground. A crowd of more than 50 people were watching the scene this afternoon.
From the Berkeley Daily Planet article linked above:
Buckwald said a central issue was construction of "a huge new building … right beside a dangerous earthquake fault. That is irresponsible and unsafe. We could use a dose of common sense here, and we hope that the courts will provide that as the case proceeds.
"It is not over yet, not by a long shot," he said.
For the love of Tedford, Buckwald, give up. You’ve lost.

Alright, just got back
More than half the trees down? Maybe? Many open spots, a lot of people yelling, maybe 60 total. the nick and I met uyp, talked for a bit, saw my friends from SAE who had created a “Free Firewood” sign that should be all over the news tonight, and daily cal. That certainly got EVERYONE riled up, they came over and accussed us of being “disrespectful”. That sparked heated debate over the stadium; no topic, from sacred indian burial ground status to the availability of a perfectly good field in Oakland, was left untouched. I, of course, held my own and defeated three hippie supporter types in verbal spars. It got boring after they started using racial slurs and babbling incoherently, so I left. Meanwhile, the trees continued to fall at a steady pace. Time for the volleyball game! Go Bears!

time for a news dump
UC Berkeley today began clearing the Memorial Stadium oak grove where tree-sitting protesters have been camped for nearly two years in an attempt to block construction of a sports training facility there.
Arborists wielding saws began thinning a portion of the grove as several dozen protesters shouted from the median on nearby Piedmont Avenue. The action came a day after a state appeals court refused two groups’ request to stop the project.
“It’s surreal to see the grove finally be cut down, after so much energy and effort and spirit was put into protecting it,” said Daria Garina, a UC Berkeley junior and supporter of the tree-sitters. “It’s tragic and awful.”
Workers in two cherry-pickers stripped most of the branches off the redwood where the tree-sitters reside, while the protesters swatted them with sticks.
A worker was struck on the head by a bottle from the tree-sitters’ perch but was able to continue trimming, officials said.
UC plans to remove some of the larger trees today but has no immediate plans to forcibly remove the four remaining tree-sitters, campus spokesman Dan Mogulof said.
A group of oak tree advocates and a Berkeley Hills neighborhood group planned to appeal the decision to the California Supreme Court.
University of California, Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof said the university today began tearing down oak trees next to its football stadium as the first step in a project to build a news sports training center adjacent to the stadium.
Mogulof said this morning that the university would only be “pruning” trees today in the wake of a court ruling on Thursday that allowed the university to go forward with the project after a 20-month legal battle.
But at a 4 p.m. news briefing next to the football stadium, Mogulof said the university actually began tearing down trees today and plans to tear down a total of 42 trees by the end of the day Monday.
He estimated that about four to five trees had been removed as of 4 p.m. today.
Videographer LA Wood, who has filmed activities at the grove of oak trees since a UC Board of Regents committee approved the project December 2006, said at least six trees have been taken down so far.
Michael Kelly, the president of the Panoramic Hill Association, which is one of three groups that filed suit to try to stop the project, said he thinks at least a dozen trees had been removed.
Wood accused UC officials of issuing a “misleading” statement about their plans for today.
“They didn’t prune trees, they killed them,” Wood said.
Four tree-sitters remained in a single tree near the stadium and at least 50 supporters had gathered near the site to watch the trees being cut down.
Wood said he thinks the university wouldn’t have cut down the trees today if there had been a larger group of protesters.
Mogulof said there are currently 70 oak trees in the grove next to the stadium and when the university finishes the work, 20 will remain.
He said the university will plant three new trees at the site for every one it removes.
Mogulof said the university expects that it will take two and a half years to build the new sports training center.
Shortly after 5 p.m., UC police detained Ayr, the leader of the ground support team for the tree-sitters.
Kelly, who witnessed the incident, said Ayr had been arguing with a small group of university students who supported removing the trees and were carrying a sign that said “Free Firewood.”
Kelly said he didn’t think Ayr did anything to warrant being detained.
Crews began cutting down trees next to Memorial Stadium at UC Berkeley late this afternoon, 21 months after activists climbed into the trees to protest the university’s plan to raze them to build a $140 million sports training center center.
Work crews with chainsaws and bulldozers arrived at the university grove Friday and by 4 p.m. six trees had been chopped down.
Clad in black ski masks, the four remaining tree protesters who were driven into a single redwood several months ago, remained in the tree today at at times sparred with arborists, tossing a bottle and branches toward the crews.
Arborists trimmed most of the branches from the redwood, leaving the few tarps and wooden platforms and the tree sitters alone before moving on to other trees on the south side of the grove.
while the protesters swatted them with sticks.
