Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory Of The Coming Of The Chainsaws!
Reports have been flooding in all morning that work has started on cutting down the Oak Grove. Just wanted to put this out there, so those who aren't combing through the DBD will be aware. We've waited a long time for this day. Per OskiMonsta:
KGO Radio Report
Just heard it, complete with chainsaws humming in the background and hippies yelling. Mogolof confirmed they have officially starting work and will continue until it’s done.
Ayr: “it’s wrong, I know in my heart, we’re going to do what we can”

Another KGO radio report
Mogolof: we are taking off branches before cutting trunks and isolating protesters.
Random tearful hippie: “This is not about us or these trees, it’s about the entire human race, I can’t even explain how I feel…(pause)…(sob)”

makes me wonder
.. do they go off to their own personal branch for privacy…and to wack off? How does that work?
that would be logistically difficult...
… plus the whole loss of balance thing… and given the limited space, they’d get in eachother’s trajectories etc… no?
After being around dumpster mufff

FleeingWolf repost!!
From BearInsider via California Golden Bear Football News:
"On my way to class this morning 20 or so UCPD officers including Mitch Celaya and Victoria Hharrison were out by Sproul Hall with 10 or so arborists. They had their shields and megaphones and equipment.
Was just up there now……there are 15 or so tards on the sidewalk. It’s actually pretty relaxed given what is going to happen . Ayr is the only recognizable face. I asked UCPD where ZRW was and they said he is now a "fleeingwolf" LOL. Nowhere to be found especially since his mayoral candidacy isn’t looking too good now.
Arborists are in cherry pickers taking off huge branches and pruning the redwood with all of the sitters in it along with other trees. UCPD said they are pruining before taking down the big trees and that things are going to move fast from here on out. Sitters were chucking feces at the arborists (i thought you don’t do that sort of thing on a native burial ground?) A UCPD officer was reading them their rights and advising them not to throw things or "interfere" with the arborists."
If taking down trees is wrong, Ayr, well, then I just plain don’t WANT to be right!

Just wanted to repeat what I said about the case being dead in the other thread
The “appeal” in the COA is dead
The hippies must now resort to the Cal Supreme Court. The language of the Appeals Court order states:
"The petition for a writ of supersedeas, mandate and/or prohibition and the related requests for an immediate stay and a 20-day stay are denied." The "petition for writ of supersedeas" was the petition essentially requesting the overturning of the decision of the lower court.
California Rules of Court, Appellate Rule 8.112. Petition for Writ of supersedeas
"(a) Petition
(1)A party seeking a stay of the enforcement of a judgment or order pending appeal may serve and file a petition for writ of supersedeas in the reviewing court. "
As far as I know, that is all the Petitioner’s filed. In UC’s original Opposition to Request for Immediate Stay and Petition fort Writ of Supersedeas, the only issues that were discussed in the brief were the Stay Request and the Writ of Supersedeas. From the looks of this, there was no other "appeal" on some separate track. From what I can tell without looking at all the available filings is that what was filed with the COA was the Request for Immediate Stay and the Writ of Supersedeas. The Court’s order disposes of those so there is nothing else to the case. Moreover, the fact that the hippies say they are going to the CSC means that the Appellate Court has ruled on all the issues because you normally can’t go to the CSC unless you have exhausted your appeals in the lower courts.
"It's not my fault your team's so shitty" - every AL Manager to Bob Geren
Our true opponent isn't the "hippies", and never has been
With the trees (finally) coming down, and with ZRW gone AWOL, I think we can (almost) say that this case no longer belongs to the “hippies”—if, in fact, it ever did. The City is out. The hippies will soon be out. And with the trees gone, I expect the misguided Oak Foundation to be out soon, too. The only party that now truly stands in the way of the UC are the NIMBYs up on Panoramic Hill. I imagine I’m not the only one hoping their legal efforts bankrupt them to the point they have to sell their precious homes to remain solvent. Now THAT would be just dessert for their arrogant selfishness.
Any chance we could get the Cal Band (and/or Student Section) to collectively moon the Hill at halftime of the next home game?

Don't know if you have DirecTV at home or not
but if you do, then just add the “sports pack” for $10 – $12 extra per month and that will give you all the regional sports networks including FoxSportsNorthwest which will carry the game. I’m pretty sure Dish and cable have similar packages but not sure what you have. Don’t know if this helps at all or not, or if you just want to hang out with other Cal people, but there will be blogging here that day during the game . . .

[University of California, Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof] said arborists working under the supervision of campus police began work this morning to insure that the four remaining protesters in a grove of oak trees next to the football stadium remain confined to a single tree.
“The pruning and other activities are being conducted to ensure public safety by preventing any possible expansion or enlargement of the protest,” Mogulof said.
He said the university is reiterating its call to the remaining tree-sitters to heed court rulings and come down voluntarily.

and fyi...
i use a hood and a uv filter on my lens. but it’s cause i need the “belt and suspender” treatment.
last year a building i was shooting from following the 8.0 earthquake in peru partially collapsed in an aftershock. the hood perished and the uv lens was skee-ratched like you wouldn’t believe – but the lens survived.
needless to say, i doubt you’d have to handle the same issue shooting from the street there at some hippies inhabiting oak trees.
Indeed. But that lens has a front element that’s just a protective element – if you scratch it, Canon will replace it cheap. So it’s already built in. And he was shooting with a flare inducing filter with no hood right into the sun – even if he doesn’t get massive flare his contrast will suck. Why spend thousands of dollars on gear and either not put on or not put on correctly the included $30 hood which will massively improve image quality in that exact situation he’s shooting in?
by protestshooter on Sep 5, 2008 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions
oh, i completely agree with you. my example is more of the exception that proves the rule.
(i’m also saving up to invest in one of those big bad boys myself and it irks me some dooshbag proto-hippie has enough cash in hand to just buy one. none of these pseudo-socialists wouldn’t last ten minutes in a protest down here.)
You guys missed it
the arborists were craning over to the hippies… the hippies started throwing something… eventually I figured out what it was… branches… the arborists had their sheilds out… then the arborists pulled out a pole of some kind and tried to grab something near the hippies… not sure what because they were stopped by the hippies… then the arborists backed down.
It looks like they are having a friendly chat?

They’re cutting the redwood branches, and the hippies are using ropes to try to snatch the tools away
"We believe this project is now dead." - Stephan Volker
the arborists seem to be cutting with those poles and the hippie above them keeps trying to catch them with that rope.
They’re sawing from the other side too. These arborists are pretty solid. UC must be paying for them to risk what they are doing.
"We believe this project is now dead." - Stephan Volker
What if the hippies get their hands on one of those chainsaws. That would be bad…
"We believe this project is now dead." - Stephan Volker
2 tree cuttin’ guys in a cherry picker with an extension chainsaw moving with stealthy coordinated quickness, 4 guys with ropes and garbage in a tree.
Hippies moving higher, practicing downward rope-on-chainsaw tricks again. They are able to wrap around the chainsaw shaft, but… it’s a chainsaw. It wins every time.
Kind of looks like they’re sword fighting. At least one of the arborists just has a pole if I see that right (with no chainsaw) poking the tree attacks away.
"We believe this project is now dead." - Stephan Volker
didn't really dawn on me till now but
how stupid do the hippies have to be to pick the redwood tree as their permanent camp? could they not have all gotten together on one of the live oak trees they are actually trying to save? did they not know the difference?
"We believe this project is now dead." - Stephan Volker
It would be hypocritical either way...
If they camp in the oaks, they’ll be blamed for hurting the very trees they’re trying to save. If they camp in the redwood, they just get to watch as the oaks get cut down. It’s a catch-22.
In that case where both options are illogical, they should really be thinking about whether they should be doing it at all ;-)
Is the redwood one of the trees that UC even wants to cut down?

Can you guys let out collective cheers each time a chainsaw stops and a branch falls?
"We believe this project is now dead." - Stephan Volker
not much going on up there right now...
went up there about an hour ago, not really much to see. No sound of chainsaws, nothing like that. There was one guy up in the trees pontificating on some hippie nonsense, but that’s about it. Pity.
Seriously?
This passes for news in Berkeley?
By the way, does cutting down this tree have anything to do with putting plumbing in the stadium or figuring out a way to have a PA system that doesn’t block my view or putting in actual seats instead of benches? If not, I laugh even harder.
Oh, that's right

In the current break in the action, 3 tree dudes have lined up and raised their arms in victory. I’m sure that this is eliciting a rousing response from below! Meanwhile, the chop chop crew sips cool beverages and refill their tanks and talk about how they are going to spend all of the sweet money they are making.

has anyone noticed if they are getting on the trunks of the other trees yet? or just trimming around the occupied tree?

It’s better when they zoom in, then it looks like the screen grabs above. Currently it is zoomed out to the useless position.

I literally just walked by. There was a symphony of chainsaws and girlish hippie screaming. All at once, a glorious cracking could be heard in the distance, followed shortly by cries of, “THEY FELL THE FIRST TREE, WE NEED A CAMERA CREW NOW!” I just walked by laughing and revving my Air-Chainsaw. UC IS EPIC WIN.
I don't know about you guys and gals out there, but for me this is a relief.

well, the tree-sitters are pretty well isolated

Front and center is the base of the tree all the remaining protesters are in. A redwood, not an oak. All the lower limbs are gone, so I don’t think they could get out without help. It’s hard to tell in this photo, but all the other trees in the area are gone.
