DBD 9.4.08 Save The Date!

Everybody save the date for my upcoming Sarah Palin Presidency Party!  We'll be celebrating and honoring the 45th President Of The United States Of America, Sarah Palin.  A historic occassion, as she will be the first ever vagina-American President (stolen shamelessly from Daily Show).

Now, the party seems most likely like it'll be in March of 2009.  Maybe April.  There is a chance it will be held in May, but that seems VERY unlikely.  I mean VERY unlikely.

Everybody is invited!  We'll be having mooseburgers with cheese.  If you are vegetarian, ha, just kidding, there are no vegetarians in Sarah Palin's America.  I guess you don't have to have cheese on your mooseburgers or something.  But after that you might have to report to the Meat Distribution Camp to receive instructions on your love for meat.

Of course, we'll be celebrating her time as Vice President, where she shot over 4 different old guys in the face.  And one old woman.  A new world record!

"OH GOD YES!" via www.gov.state.ak.us

Seriously, though, this is an exciting time for Alaska and, in specific, Wasilia.  This is the best thing to happen to Wasilia since they got that Wal-Mart.  No, not that Wal-Mart, the other Wal-Mart.  The one that sells food.  I think it's called the Super Wal-Mart.

Bring the kids, of course, no matter how pregnant they may be.  It'll be a family affair.  So, save the date.  Sometime next spring.  Sarah Palin Presidency Party.

IT'S GOING TO BE HUGE!

Let's get some links:

Women's v-ball will arouse Danzig this Saturday:

THE FACTS: No. 5 Cal (2-0, 0-0 Pac-10) hosts DePaul (0-2), James Madison (2-2) and UC Riverside (3-1) this weekend (Sept. 5-6) in the Golden Bear Invitational at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif. DePaul will take on UC Riverside Friday, Sept. 5 at 4:30 p.m. followed by the Bears' matchup with James Madison at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 6, two matches will be played simultaneously at noon as James Madison faces UC Riverside and Cal takes on DePaul. At 4:30 p.m., James Madison will play DePaul before Cal and UC Riverside close out the tournament with a 7 p.m. joust. Live statistics for all three Cal matches will be available via GameTracker and fans can watch the Bears live on the internet via Cal All-Access. Please visit www.CalBears.com for links to stats and video.

Women's soccer may or may not arouse Danzig, but if it happens, it'll be this Saturday:

BEARS FACE MISSOURI: Coming off a 6-0 victory over Saint Joseph's, No. 21 California (2-1, 0-0 Pac-10) wraps up a three-game homestand against Missouri (1-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12) Saturday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. at Edwards Stadium. The last time Cal scored more than six goals in a regular-season game was in a 12-0 shutout of James Madision in 2000 in Berkeley.

Cal press release over this Saturday's game:

BERKELEY - This Saturday's Cal football game against Washington State, the Pac-10 opener for both teams, will be available on television on multiple channels. The game will kickoff at 3:30 p.m. and will be aired in northern California by Comcast SportsNet West (CSN-West) and in the Pacific Northwest by Fox Sports Northwest. For all locations, please check local listings for availability.

CSN-West is available on basic cable throughout most of northern California, but only on digital cable in the Bay Area. However, for this and all Cal live telecasts, the feed will be available to non-digital Comcast subscribers on cable Ch. 99. Click here for a channel directory for Comcast in northern California.

The game will also be available in southern California on Time Warner Cable (Ch. 258 and 864) - again, check your own local listings or call your cable company to verify. In Hawaii, the game is available on Time Warner Digital on Ch. 246.

For Direct TV customers with the Sports Pack, the game is scheduled to be available on Ch. 698 and Ch. 687. Through the Dish Network nationally, fans with various bonus packages, including America's Top 100 Plus, can view on Ch. 409 or Ch. 426.

Okanes on Wed practice:

Cal had a good practice Wednesday night as it continues to get ready for Washington State. It struck me tonight how much different this week’s preparation is than last week for the defense. Last week, the Bears were preparing for a run-it-down-your-throat offense, and did a good job stopping Michigan State’s power rushing attack. This week, the Bears will have to contend with the Cougars’ no-huddle, spread offense, newly implemented by new coach Paul Wulff. The good news for Cal is it faced several spread teams last year, and with nine returning starters, the Bears are probably pretty well-equipped to handle it.

Wide receiver Michael Calvin continues to move better and better and it looks like he’ll take on a much bigger role than last week, when he only saw a handful of reps. Calvin is the Bears’ best receiver and will make a big difference in the offense once he’s able to play every down.

“There’s no question he was our leading receiver coming into camp and he had a great camp,” Cal coach Jeff Tedford said after practice today. “It would definitely be a little boost to have him healthy.”

This was posted in yesterday's DBD, but was kind of buried, so I thought I'd bring it back out.  Okanes has a few notes on Mack and Riley and Morrah and others:

–Tight end Cameron Morrah talked a little more about his catch Saturday on a pass when Kevin Riley looked like he was being sacked. “I actually thought he had crossed the line of scrimmage. I thought he was running. I was trying to come back and get a block or something. I saw the ball in the air, I was like ‘Oh!’ I just came back for it.”

Morrah also talked Tuesday about his improved attention to blocking. Morrah has always been considered a terrific pass-catching tight end but the belief heading into the season is he had to improve on the physical aspect of playing at the line of scrimmage.

“I’m getting a little more comfortable with it,” Morrah said. “Before, it just wasn’t part of my game. It didn’t have to be. Now that i’m stepping into that starting role, I can’t be just a one-dimensional player out there or else teams are going to really key down on me if I’m just coming in to run a route. My blocking has to continue to grow.”

And does Morrah like that aspect of playing tight end? “I have to like it,” he said. “If it’s going to get more reps for me out on the field and more experience, it’s all better for me.”

WSU is getting healthier:

PULLMAN — Back in April, Paul Wulff made an alarming observation about his injury-riddled football team's showing at spring camp.

"It's hard to grow when you don't have the pieces to grow with," the new Washington State football coach said.

After practice Tuesday, Wulff recited that same line — only he did so to highlight a different point.

A few key pieces are back — pieces that were badly missed in Saturday's 39-13 loss to Oklahoma State.

Wide receiver Jeshua Anderson took the field for the first time since having hernia surgery the first week of August. Anderson participated only in individual routes, but he is expected to participate in team drills as soon as today.

Punter Reid Forest also returned and was punting for the first time since breaking his left ankle in early July.

"Chances are good he will play," Wulff said of Saturday's home game against California at 3:30 p.m.

Wulff also said receiver Daniel Blackledge is "making some progress" and should be in the starting lineup sooner rather than later. Blackledge saw only limited action in last Saturday's game and the majority of camp because of a lingering hamstring injury.

The return of Anderson and Blackledge can't come soon enough for an offense that depends heavily on timing between the quarterback and the receiver.

So, there you go.  I woke up late, so its up late.  But I feel happy and rested.  First time I've slept past 7 in a LONG time.  If you see any Cal-related links, bring those bad-boys in here.  Anything at all.  Dump away!  GO BEARS!

Wazzu's two starting guards are down

LINK

The injury-hampered Cougars may be missing both starting offensive guards Saturday when they open Pac-10 play Saturday against the visiting California Bears.

Coach Paul Wulff said after Wednesday’s practice that he expects left guard Andrew Roxas to miss three to six weeks with a sprained knee suffered Tuesday in practice.

Wulff said he’s hopeful right guard Brian Danaher can return to practice Thursday after sitting out Wednesday with a strained glute. Wulff hopes Danaher and starting defensive tackle A’i Ahmu can play Saturday. Ahmu has missed the past two practices with a left shoulder injury.

Chron article on James Montgomery, who plays for WSU now:

(09-03) 22:09 PDT — Washington State’s James Montgomery says he’ll spend this week’s practices running faster than ever.

“I’m doing the best I can to prepare our defense for Jahvid Best’s speed,” Montgomery said. “I’m not sure they realize yet just how fast he is.”

Few know better than Montgomery, who was in the Cal program for two seasons before transferring to Washington State in March. Though Montgomery was listed as the Bears’ No. 1 tailback going into spring practices, he probably would have dropped to No. 3 by the season-opener.

It also has this info on the kicker with some information I didn’t know THAT ROCKS:

Ups and downs: The meteoric rise of freshman kicker Giorgio Tavecchio may be matched by just as swift a fall. The 5-foot-8 walk-on from Campolindo arrived on campus just three days before the Michigan State game and won kickoff duties. After five relatively short kicks on game day, Tavecchio was replaced by freshman David Seawright and may not kick against Washington State. A travel squad can be no larger than 64 players and coach Jeff Tedford said he rarely includes two kickers.

WSU starting defensive tackle A’i Ahmu who was initially listed as questionable for this Saturday’s game has turned himself into police custody.

A warrant for Ahmu’s arrest had been issued because he failed to appear for a court date to answer a minor-in-possession charge, according to WSU Police Sgt. Mike Larsen.
Ahmu was released around 5 p.m. from the Whitman County Jail, and was not at the Cougars’ practice on Wednesday.
WSU coach Paul Wulff said Ahmu’s status for the game Saturday against California would be clear once the team received more information.

Tedford expresses some concern about having a Pac-10 game so early.

Not only are the Bears starting Pac-10 competition earlier than they would like, they are doing so against a new coaching staff that has implemented the no-huddle, spread offense. Tedford said the team has watched film of Eastern Washington, new Cougars coach Paul Wulff’s previous stop, but doesn’t have a lot to go on for the conference opener.
“You just don’t know what to expect,” Tedford said. “We’ve obviously seen tape of Eastern Washington from last year to try to get a gauge on who they are. But their personnel is a little bit different at Washington State. There are a lot of unknowns playing a conference game so early, especially against somebody you don’t have a lot of history with. That makes it more difficult to play a conference game that early when it’s a new coach.”

I liked this excerpt
Kevin Riley had a very good game at quarterback for us against Michigan State, and he is our quarterback for this weekend in Pullman. He did a great job of limiting mistakes and running our offense. I have read some things which have stated that this is Kevin’s team now. While he is our quarterback for this weekend, a big focus for us is that it is no one player’s team. This is everybody’s TEAM. Every player on this team, whether it is Kevin or Nate or Brock or any of the quarterbacks, right down to our scout team guys, our injured guys, our walk-ons, every player on this team and every coach, is integral to us reaching our goals. And the fans come into play, as well. It may be sounding cliché, but our motto of Every Game Counts is true, as well as Every Fan Counts, Every Player Counts and so forth.

No names

I kind of like the no-name jerseys. Yeah, it’s cliche, and trite, and ham-handed and all that, but it also does seem to work. Besides, think about the message the names send:

Best: Oh, I’m better than you – neener neener neener
Mansion: Ha ha ha! I live in a big house and your daddy’s on the welfare!
Riley: I’m so emotionally unstable I’ll get all riled up
Alualu: My name is so good I got it twice, loser!
Follett: Um … yeah

No names is better

Go Bears!

by SoCal Oski on Sep 5, 2008 8:31 AM PDT up reply actions

The only problem with no names, for me, is that there are so many new players this year and I have no idea who they are on the field yet.
