DBD 9.26.08 I'm feeling remarkably more gruntled
Earlier, after the Maryland loss, I was definitely not feeling all that gruntled. Although, to be fair, I wasn't exactly Uncle Ant or even Klu Klux Clam. But I certainly had trouble avoiding a special kind of goat.
But now, with the bye week winding down, I'm defintiely starting to feel a lot more traught. My gruntledness has increased as I learned that Jahvid Best just had sore ribs. My traughtosity is through the roof thanks to the knowledge that Colorado State is pretty much just a day away.
And the USC loss has me feeling incredibly combobulated. So very combobulated!
Hopefully, things will improve over the weekend and who knows, maybe by the time CSU rolls around, I'll be feeling not only fully gruntled or even impeccably traught, but perhaps, perchance, even concerted.
Oh, what I'd give to feel concerted.
So, don't be dissing me now. That'd really ruin my feelings of gruntle, concert, combobulate, and traught. And that would SUCK.
Let's get to some links!
Field hockey wins a tight one:
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Ashley Glosz scored in the 75th minute in overtime to give No. 20 California a 3-2 "sudden victory" over No. 19 Michigan and its fifth-straight win on Thursday afternoon at Phyllis Ocker Field. The Golden Bears had taken a 2-0 lead over the host Wolverines on goals by Kellie York and Katie Knoche. But Michigan scored twice in the last eight minutes of regulation to send the game to overtime. In overtime, Cal senior midfielder/forward Andrea Lo set up Glosz's winning goal at the 74:37 mark. Glosz scored from the left side of the circle, backhanding a shot to the opposite side of the net.
Cal's record improved to 6-1 after the non-conference win, while Michigan fell to 3-6.
"We got a couple corners in overtime," Cal head coach Shellie Onstead said. "The first one we didn't execute so well, and we got another one after that. In the Albany game Ashley had the opportunity to score in a similar situation but didn't make a good decision. This time I instructed Ashley to read what they're doing, keep the ball, defeat the first runner and then take your best shot. She held the ball to her backhand and took a backhanded shot. That was brilliant, because the goalie was moving to her right and Ashley's left."
via grfx.cstv.com
Women's soccer ALSO wins a close one:
BERKELEY - The No. 22 California women's soccer team defeated visiting Brigham Young University, 2-1, Thursday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears received two goals from freshman defender Danielle Brunache while Katie Larkin scored for the Cougars. Cal, which out shot BYU - 18-6, improves to 6-3-0 while the Cougars drop to 6-5-0.
"I think we started the game very, very well in terms of our defense. Our organization was good and our offense was committed and earned a lot of shots and that forced [BYU] back," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. "In the second half, we weren't as efficient with that but I thought we were much more efficient in terms of our set pieces, and as a result, we got two goals."
This was buried in one of the live blog threads, but Kendrick Payne is done for the season:
–Some pretty significant news tonight: Cal coach Jeff Tedford said freshman nose tackle Kendrick Payne is out for the season. Payne had knee surgery a couple of weeks ago, but Tedford characterized it as minor. Apparently, when surgeons got inside, they found that Payne had torn his medial collateral ligament.
Payne had opened some eyes with his play during training camp and early in the season, so much so that the Bears had him penciled into their plans despite the fact he is a true freshman. It would have been interesting to see just how much playing time he would have got now that Mika Kane is back healthy.
The good news is the Bears can still redshirt Payne and have him for four more years.
Relive the magic(k) that was Okanes chat.
Rams head coach readies for the 3-4:
Steve Fairchild is used to facing 3-4 defenses. All of the teams in the AFC East, he said, were running versions of it during his two seasons as offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills.
But his CSU football team will face a team playing a three-man front for the first time this season when the Rams (2-1) visit California (2-1) on Saturday. Four-man fronts, like those run by CSU as well as its first three opponents, have tackles lining up directly over the guards and ends outside the tackles. In a three-man front, the center and tackles have defenders directly across from them, while the guards have to go out and hit linebackers who are two or three yards off the line of scrimmage.
There are some links to start the day. If you see a Cal related link, dump it here. Otherwise, GO BEARS!
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

Tedford and the Bears are not concerned about upholding Pac-10 conference pride this weekend.
“It’s (Saturday’s game), not so much for the conference as it is ourselves,” Tedford said. “We have to get back on track. We lost a tough one at Maryland. So we are focused on what we need to get done.”
He was referring to a 35-27 loss Sept. 13 that knocked the then-No. 23 Golden Bears out of the national rankings.
“It’s mainly about how we play (against CSU),” Tedford said. “We go into every game not so concerned about who the opponent is as if we can play to our potential. So it’s not so much about the Mountain West or whoever we play, it’s more about that we have to take care of our business, and that’s how we try to motivate ourselves. I don’t think that we need to say that we’re trying to carry the torch of anything.”
Best still hears from people interested in his pregame breakfast from the Maryland game.
“I’ve heard a lot about it, and I know I’ve got to take it,” Best said. “I know they’re going to play it and it’s going to get publicity, but it’s all right. Hopefully, I’ll be able to make a different highlight this week and put that thing in the past.”
Best, whose sternum was bruised, crawled toward the sideline before lying down on his back. After a couple of minutes, Cal’s medical staff rolled Best on to his side, and he vomited a neon green liquid.
The video found its way to YouTube before the game’s conclusion. The most popular four versions of the video have been viewed by more than 200,000 users, but one question had gone unasked until Wednesday’s teleconference.
ESPN’s Ted Miller said, “I’ve got to ask. What did you have for breakfast?” For the record, Best says it was a mix of blue Gatorade and yellow Cytomax.
Best may have a big day against CSU’s lackluster kickoff game.
"I don’t think so. We know he’s a great athlete, we just have to keep doing what we’ve been doing the past couple of weeks, our assignments," Herd said. "It’s basically back to assignments. The first week, our assignments were a little messed up. After that, each week has been getting better. Our coaches are pleased with us, so we just have to keep improving."
Colorado State has given up some returns, including a 93 yard score by Colorado’s Josh Smith. Special teams coach Larry Lewis said he’s seen improvement, but admitted Best does make one think. He feels a key is to keep Best wondering what exactly is coming.
"I look at that every week," Lewis said. "I think the more you keep a return team off balance, the better off you’re going to be. Now, saying that, you also can’t screw your kids up. It has to be kind of within your scheme. With this guy, you might want to kick it into the bleachers."
That’s choice No. 1. Jason Smith may be the best option to get that done, but Lewis basically said he’d have to run off the field to protect his healing broken right arm, so it’s not much of an option. Freshman Ben DeLine has kicked off 14 times this year — all in the state of Colorado — and has registered just four touchbacks.

A note on tomorrow's game:
From Erin of Erin’s Cal Goodies, re: the late Director Emeritus of the Cal Band, Robert O. Briggs:
Hello again-
I just got confirmation that the Pac-10 has approved the entire Cal football team to have Bob’s initials, BB, on the back of their helmets for tomorrow’s home game vs. Colorado State.
I think this is an amazingly sweet and wonderful gesture of the football team. The person whose idea it was is Mike McHugh, the Director of Football Operations and a friend of mine. He told Tedford of the idea and Tedford readily agreed. Bob obviously meant a lot to Tedford, his administration, and the team.
There will also be a moment of silence during halftime for Bob, with a picture of him on the videoboard.
Please pass this information on to your friends who are attending the game. In the craziness of announcements, I want to make sure as many people know that this is all happening for Bob.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

I don't remember reading this anywhere
but I found this in the UCPD police log from Wednesday:
"6:44 PM – SLOCUM, Tracy (MB-20-S) cited for driving on a suspended license, driving the wrong-way on a one way street, and driving with no motorcycle helmet, E/ Women’s Faculty Club.
White 2006 Honda Metro Scooter, 18L8326, towed for having an unlicensed driver, E/ Women’s Faculty Club. To Husteads Tow."
It’s better than USC’s monthly recruit/player convicted of a felony, but this is still a little bothersome. Maybe no one said anything because it was only a citation.
