GAME OF THE YEAR!!!  WELLS IS OUT!!!  BUT CAN THE BUCKEYES STILL WIN?

We all hate Southern Cal, but we need them to represent the Pac-10 after a poor showing today by all other Pac-10 teams.

Go Bears! and Fight On?

At Least

Oregon saved face for the conference. Otherwise, an ugly, ugly day.

Now now Twist

You may root for USC if you’d like, but let us never sanction those two words on this site ever again.

In that case

the BYU rape of UCLA should spur UCLA to the Rose Bowl???? :-)

by impaulv on Sep 13, 2008 4:44 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I can agree with that.

It sucks any time we lose, but I would much rather lose a non-conference game than a conference game. In fact, I’d rather we drop two nonconference games than a single one. Our national coverage will probably be much less significant now, which is probably better for our team. We seem to perform best when we’re under the radar.

What is it about Cal and expectations? It seems like we always get donkey punched in the balls when we’re expected to do well.

Especially the ones with the theme: “Wow, this is clearly my 2nd/3rd game watching Cal football. Tedford sucks. He should be fired. I don’t know who you’d replace him with, but FIRE HIM.”

Go Bears!

by SoCal Oski on Sep 13, 2008 5:07 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't understand why

It’s not like we usually choke in these games. It just seems to be a combination of poor play and bad luck. Every time we absolutely need to win a game, we can’t get the job done.

by Berkelium97 on Sep 13, 2008 5:11 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes. Fight ... well, you know

Nice to see Oregon represent the conference well, but that wasn’t much or a surprise. And I expect $C to take care of business as well — Wells or no Wells.

Thank god Ucla sucks worse than we do. Their ass-kicking made ours a bit easier to take

Go Bears!

by SoCal Oski on Sep 13, 2008 5:01 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

haha....

yeah, UCLA got stomped. But in our defense it was by a ranked opponent…

And I was expecting the worst with Oregon. So that’s a relief in trying to defend the PAC10 :-)

by impaulv on Sep 13, 2008 5:04 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bruins Nation seems pretty content

Yet when you beat ranked opponents with Dorrell, you trashed him when he lost.

by BearsNecessity on Sep 13, 2008 5:14 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think most people on BN

are stunned about the breakdown today but recognized after Tenn and before the season even started that the cupboard is pretty bare and that Neuheisel is going to need some time to get things together. I think we will in a couple years, but for the near-future, there is a LOT to improve on.

by impaulv on Sep 13, 2008 5:18 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I swear Dorrell’s teams had injured quarterbacks every season. Yet he never got the benefit of the doubt either.

by BearsNecessity on Sep 13, 2008 5:26 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I still think USC is gonna stomp OSU

USC has too much power on both sides off the ball, whereas OSU doesn’t have it all together when it comes to offense

Kirk is getting a boner over Pryor.

by The Hombre on Sep 13, 2008 5:37 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We definitely bent over and took it

I felt it all the way out here. I can only imagine how it felt to the team…

by impaulv on Sep 13, 2008 5:42 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If I were AD I would thank Neuheisel for his brief service and promote Norm Chow.

by The Hombre on Sep 13, 2008 5:44 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't think so...

I think Neuheisel is a better choice in the long run. Chow is definitely a better tactician (sp), but I don’t know if he has the personality a coach at UCLA needs to recruit.

by impaulv on Sep 13, 2008 5:47 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Plus...

it was Chow’s offense and Neuheisel’s coaching that wasn’t able to pull out a win or even a score today. Total team effort.

by impaulv on Sep 13, 2008 5:48 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

“Represent the Pac-10”? Are you guys for real?

Screw the Pac-10. I’ve lived through enough USC victories for ten lifetimes. Every game they lose is an early Christmas present for me, and virtually ensures they can’t claim another fraudulent national title.

I suppose conference reputation is mildly important, but if given the choice I will take USC losing about a hundred times out of a hundred.

by markdash on Sep 13, 2008 5:44 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It goes a way, but let’s face it, Cal probably isn’t going to be ranked high enough to qualify for a BCS bowl this season, anyway. Our bowl standing will almost assuredly be determined by our conference finish. Therefore it doesn’t really matter whether our conference is awesome or poop.

by markdash on Sep 13, 2008 5:48 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

true, good point

www.californiagoldenblogs.com

by HydroTech on Sep 13, 2008 5:51 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

People only care how we finish the season

It’s how Cal got their high ranking in 2003, it’s how USC and Georgia were so highly touted coming into the season.

by BearsNecessity on Sep 13, 2008 5:53 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So you’re saying that we should root for USC because it could affect a pollster’s decision making process next year when evaluating Cal?

Really?

by markdash on Sep 13, 2008 5:56 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Beating USC would do a lot more for us than USC beating Ohio State and then us losing to them.

Just a thought.

by BearsNecessity on Sep 13, 2008 6:00 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Chaos theory

A higher regard for USC means a much higher regard for us when we beat them. Whenever that may be.

The SEC being considered the best conference in the country didn’t happen in one season. It was built off reputation year over year. Whether they actually are the best or not doesn’t actually matter; it’s the perception that they are the best that matters.

Also, why do you think USC was favored over OSU? Maybe because USC has done well on the national stage over the last few years while OSU has typically choked?

by DougOLis on Sep 13, 2008 6:00 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

USC was favored over OSU because they were at home. The line would probably be the opposite in the Horseshoe. The Wells injury jumped the line another 4 points.

Chaos theory is applicable in many places. College football is not one of them.

Some notes from Cal-MD today

From JO’s most recent post

-Tedford also said that Shane Vereen suffered an ankle sprain but it doesn’t appear to be serious.
-Most guys said after the game that they didn’t feel affected by the time change. They actually said, if anything, it was the heat and humidity that was the hardest adjustment. But nobody blamed the loss on it or said it was a major factor.
-More than one player pointed out that this year’s team is better-equipped to handle adversity than last year’s because of the improved leadership on the roster. The Bears seem pretty sure the loss wont’ linger.
-Jahvid Best said he felt a little sore after the game, but not much more than that. He also said the hit he took from Maryland’s Kevin Barnes was the hardest he’d ever taken in his life.

by Berkelium97 on Sep 13, 2008 6:01 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's the difference between USC and everyone else in the Pac

Trojans seem to be the only team that can go into the humidity and stomp yard.

(Oregon going to Michigan wasn’t a humid game, doesn’t count)

true

I went to the UVA game and most of the California visitors were dying – it was 90 in the stands and felt hotter; I pale to think what it was like at field level

by DC Trojan on Sep 13, 2008 6:14 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That was a good play by Barnes, but Riley did hang Best out to dry on that one. What the heck was the guy lead blocking for Best… why did he let someone dive straight into Best…? That’s what I want to know.

by danzig on Sep 13, 2008 6:04 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He got beat

Sometimes in football, the other guys make better plays.

by BearsNecessity on Sep 13, 2008 6:06 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Few observations from someone at the game.

From BI

3) Sitting about 5 rows off the field behind CAL’s bench, it was clear that a few of Riley’s errant passes were due to WRs cutting the wrong way or taking the wrong route. Riley was visiably frustrated on at least 2-3 drives – Tedford seemed to agree. His INT was a result of the WR slipping on the field and the DB jumped the route.

4) Tedford had another blow up, this time directed at one of his trainers who was madly trying to retape Vareen’s ankle in the second half. I’m guessing it took way too long and Vareen missed a play he was supposed to be in on.

by BearsNecessity on Sep 13, 2008 6:09 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That 4th thing was supposed to be in blockquote too.

by BearsNecessity on Sep 13, 2008 6:12 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Good info… I thought that first INT was just waaay too easy. PLus the way Riley would sit in the pocket wondering if he even had WRs… it had to be route running to a certain extent.

by danzig on Sep 13, 2008 6:12 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, I think you could see in the replay the WR getting up off the turf.

by sec119 on Sep 13, 2008 6:14 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think what we’re seeing right now is how the rest of the game is going to go. Ohio St. can’t stop USC. It won’t be a blowout for a while, but eventually this game will be out of reach.

by The Hombre on Sep 13, 2008 6:09 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What the frick is going through a highschool RB's head when he commits to USC?

… I mean, really? There’s a 3 star RB that commited…. I’m wondering if he’s got a television. btw, this isn’t a question for SC fans.

by danzig on Sep 13, 2008 6:10 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

it’s going to be uglier than that, OU is a far better team than BYU and Washington has less D than UCLA.

by bearsglory on Sep 13, 2008 6:12 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

#9 Auburn 3, Mississippi St. 0 in the 4th quarter

I’m not sure if this is an upset alert, since (1) they’re playing on the wettest field I’ve ever seen, and (2) a 3 point lead by Auburn might as well be 30 points.
