Do you know who the coach of Cal football is? Jeff Tedford. He will make the decision as to who will start, and he is 1000 times the football coach you could ever dream to be.
The best QB will get the job. Period. End of story.

We have to keep comparing a guy that has started played in 2 games versus a guy that has played 26 games. Oh and did I mention Cal runs closed practices that we as fans can’t attend and evaluate the quarterbacks?

I do not believe I’ve ever seen a quarterback so associated with the frustration of a fourth-quarter interception as I have seen with Nate Longshore.
Yeah, it’s the nonsense I hear from people who claim to be Cal football fans, yet haven’t actually seen all the games, left the USC game early because it was raining, and can’t name a single WR on Cal’s team.
It just sounds stupider in netspeak, so I wrote it that way.
Longshore: We need experience at the QB position. I have the experience you need. Riley is just some hollywood celebrity-type who is all style no substance.
Riley: Longshore is the face of old Cal football. Supporting me is supporting change for Cal football.
Brock Mansion: The biased media doesn’t give me any coverage so I have no support.
I thought that was a Ralph Nader reference. Or is that sooo 2000?

No one thinks they’re smarter than Tedford but a lot of people like to armchair quarterback on this site, or at least I do. It’s how some of us grew up discussing football. If you want to criticize and/or call me an idiot for my opinions I’m all for it. The guys who run this site, many of whom are in the Longshore/Tedford is God camp, are very good at that and it’s what makes this place fun.
But come on, the Tedford trolls (ie. “this post on playcalling, the depth chart, etc. is pointless because Tedford will make that decision so please shut up”) are just as annoying as those of us who would like to debate Longshore/Riley for the rest of the month. It’s starting to sound like you guys would refuse to describe a Cal win as “good” or “great” until you know what the coach thinks. Just calm down and ignore the fan posts for the rest of the season or remind people why they are idiots. Let’s not silence debate.
I agree that it is important to continue the debate here and elsewhere. I think that what people are saying is that nothing really has happened to change the debate. The debate is the same today as it was in January 2008. Maybe as the season approaches, something will happen to alter the debate (major injury or Tedford actually picks one of the two). But until then, we are just sort of having the same discussion over and over again as we did for the last 8 months.
I have no doubt that as the season progresses Longshore v. Riley will definitely be a hot topic for debate here and elsewhere. And I hope you are here to lead us in that reasonable debate.

8 fucking months of Longshore vs. Riley…people analyzing every goddamn play, every game, every snap Riley’s thrown. Seriously a third of the posts on scout have something to do with Longshore vs. Riley. There have been Longshore vs. Riley fanposts, blog posts, giant freaking threads about Longshore that have been linked to by mainstream media. Enough’s enough.
I'm actually all for debate
I just don’t feel that in pushing for Riley, it’s fair to focus on the negatives of Longshore. Admittedly, there are negatives, but as Spazzy just said, there’s nothing new going on. Let’s let something happen before we get into all of this again.

I was “all for” debate for about 2 months. Then it just got stupid and tiring to hear the same shit over and over again for the last 6.
Point taken. I prefaced “My take” with the admission that I hadn’t thought about the debate for seven months and so I was interested in revisiting it. I was writing with a bit of “holy shit, I can’t believe Cal football is 24 days away” enthusiasm along with some added vigor from a couple beers. I can see why those of you who have been on the front lines of the battle for months are a bit tired of it.
For what it's worth
I don’t think any of the writers are in the “Longshore is god” camp. We’re definitely more in the “Tedford is god” camp, along with TedfordIsGod. Hydro is often accused of being a Longshore apologist, but he just wants everyone to know that there are other factors at play than THE QUARTERBACK SUCKS when he throws an interception or Cal loses.
I think Tedford is a fantastic coach and program builder, but he is not without fault, and I’m anxious to see how he responds to certain problems (team’s lack of leadership and discipline, sticking with Nate when he was clearly injured, such as the end of the ASU game) that were so prevalent last year.

Well said CBK. TedfordIsGod had a great post about this back on TBIOOTF concerning the new shine being off Tedford this year and settling into a more realistic mode for fans.
That said, this is introducing logiks to the internet, and therefore will not work.

I feel that I’ve been totally objective and evenhanded in my analysis of the Riley vs Longshore competition. I’ve weighed the facts carefully, not let my feelings cloud my judgment and let the conclusion fall where it may showing favor to neither Riley nor Longshore. I’m sure that if you go through my postings you’ll find just as many entries critical of Riley as of Longshore.
My word is my reputation on this. You can trust me.
