Does Nate Get More Chances?
As good as he was two years ago and as much as it wasn't ALL his fault last year, I'm hard-pressed to see him come back to the huddle with the way that Riley continues to make plays. More obviously than Ayoob, Nate, and even Rodgers (should have more wins against SC), Riley inspires and seems to play his best at the highest stakes moments. Obviously the OSU ending sucked, but Tedford put him in that situation at the end of his very first game when they should have already been kicking (none of the above QBs drives the field or avoids that safety.)
I hope this QB carousel ends. Those interceptions, especially the second one into at least triple coverage were awful. Ball security should be number one especially deep in opposing territory - they should have triggered pulls last year. I know Tedford thinks Nate got a bad rap and worries about his reputation/psyche etc,. but I am going to be pissed if Nate gets another shot when a game is still in question.

Your definition is nebulous. “Highest stakes”? What does that mean? Tied game? Trailing by 7? Up by 7? Cal didn’t trail the entire game, so there was never a “highest stake” moment. He had that one very impressive pass to Morrah.
Obviously the OSU ending sucked, but Tedford put him in that situation at the end of his very first game when they should have already been kicking.
Uh, there were 13 seconds left and time for one more play. And yet you blame Tedford. Good one.
I find it funny that Riley playing 2 and a half solid games immediately vaults him past Rodgers. Let him play an entire season before we start making those armchair judgments.

Air Force and OSU
Air Force down three touchdowns in the bowl game to salvage the season and OSU, 2 minute drill for the game and the national #1 ranking, I would consider “high stakes.” Even last game, he doesn’t score in the second half or at least possess the ball beyond a 3 and out, especially that 3rd and 13, Cal loses first game of season and potential for season is called into question. Yes, unfortunately that is all the opportunity he’s ever been presented but I would consider Riley coming through with flying colors. Compared with Longshore’s giveaways at the end of UCLA, SC, and other opportunities, I wouldn’t call stepping up in crunch time.
As for last of OSU, NFL teams reserve at least 8-10 secs to bring a field goal unit on. A QB in his first start is expected to go through three progressions and then throw it out of bounds in 3 seconds when a chipshot field goal brings OT with momentum? Sounds like the recipe for disaster that it was and Tedford himself would tell you that. Rodgers might have been a bit much but I don’t feel like he ever won a game Cal shouldn’t have won (i.e. game planning). The 22 straight completions against SC were impressive and should have been enough if not for special teams, but what about the closing drives in both halves that fizzled? In each of Riley’s admittedly brief 3 career games, he’s done exactly that with his scrambling, arm and throws under duress with guys literally hanging off him.
I agree with other posters that Longshore should only come in during garbage time, I’m not sure what NFL career he has to salvage. His throws on Saturday wobbled like ducks.

i agree,
It’s true that we shouldn’t be too quick to vault Riley past Rodgers in the pantheon just yet, he has been offensive MVP in two of the three games where he has seen significant minutes. He would have been at OSU also, had he not capped off a brilliant drive with that mistake we all know so well.
Great posts, but...
I just have to correct you on the 22 straight completions for Rodgers V. USC. It was actually 23, which tied an NCAA record set back in the seventies, I believe. As Rodgers is one of my idols, (in case you missed my avatar) I had to correct that. Keep up the great posts…
I’m sure we will gain a fairly large lead in at least one of the next three games (which are against opponents who looked between mediocre and poor this weekend). I would like to see Longshore put in during that time so he can get more comfortable out there. He has the physical tools and experience to perform well, but he didn’t look like himself out there last night. Unless we have a large lead or are at home with the lead, I will be uncomfortable with him out there until he can start performing to his potential again.
Not while the game is still on the line and Riley is playing well
Agree, Tedford should find a good, low-risk time to get him back in there and hopefully rebuild some of his confidence, which must be pretty low at this point.
We may very well need him at some point this season, so we want him to be confident. I like Nate a lot. His play has been disappointing lately, but I still think he is capable of being a very good QB.
NO!
Is Tedford puts Nate back in it will really call into question his motives. If you recall when he handed over the reigns to Rodgers and benched then senior Robertson, he was decisive and stuck with his decision. Now I hear that Tedford will decide this week whether or not to continue the two QB system. I have to believe he only said that to placate Nate, but if not I would be seriously concerned.
Also, about all the booing of Nate. I think it was more an indictment of Tedford by the fans than being exclusively directed at Nate. Sure some of it was meant for Nate, but certainly not the majority of it. Given coaches exorbitant salary I figure he can take a few boo birds when he makes such a questionable personnel decision. I really hope this QB experiment is over. Many are already making the call that if there is any mop up duty in the future this season, it should be Brock and not Nate getting the snaps. I agree.
i don't see any problem
with putting Nate back in during garbage time. Putting him back in because Tedford feels he owes Longshore another chance would be indeed be a bad decision, but we may legitimately need him this year, and while a two-QB system is less than ideal, it doesn’t help Cal at all to have a backup QB who has shattered confidence.
Baby steps, let’s help Nate get back into this when further poor play won’t ruin Cal’s chances at winning.
Were you at the game Seth?
Because people around me were hurling obscenities at Nate by name. I know you’re not a Longshore fan, but don’t be naive about it – people were pissed and booing at Nate, not Tedford.
For the benefit of the team, Nate should get time in blowouts because he’s going to be the QB if Riley gets hurt regardless if Mansion is ready or not
Cal fans are like little kids who can’t stand to see anyone’s feelings hurt. Nate is a senior, why should he still get playing time? What does he do to make this team better now or in the future? And, more importantly, it is obvious from the exit interviews of last season that a majority of the team became demoralized because they wanted Riley in. Nate had his chance, bless his little heart. Any other team would have kept him on the bench months ago. This ridiculous discussion long since silenced. Only in Berkeley now seems to apply to football.
I think Cal fans are like little babies who cry and boo when the head coach does something they don’t like. Nate should get playing time if Tedford wants to play him, plain and simple. Nothing anybody can do about it, either, other than make it comfortable or awkward.
And as I said before, I would have done exactly what Tedford did and I stand by that despite the bad result. It’s not to “give Nate a chance” in the lame sense that you mean, it is to check him out in a game situation to see what we’ve got. Dude was a starter, dude has a great arm, dude has trouble making decisions, got it. We still have a solid #2 and that’s a huge asset. His next reps will be garbage time as others state, so there’s not much of an issue any more. Hopefully the boo birds will give it a rest. Fuckin’ assholes, all y’all.
Interesting
OK, so what does that say of Jeff Tedford? And who are the “lot of others?” Besides members of this blog? I think Tedford has stuck by Nate because he is stubborn and can’t stand to be proven wrong. This is potentially a fatal flaw for any coach. He was stubborn with Ayoob when Levy clearly should have played. So, who are these masses of others? And where were they when Nate was being booed by the hometown fans?
Yeah, you’re right. I don’t like when the coach upsets the tempo of the game by putting in someone who blew most of last season. So, I guess I am a baby! A damn smart one, son!
Nate's Future
First off, I have no problems with JT putting Nate in there during the 2nd. It was early in the game, nothing was really “on the line” and in all honesty, JT needed to see both Riley and Nate in an actual game situation.
After the 2nd pick, I think JT saw all he needed to see, and Nate was on the bench. Why this is some sort of point of contention or discussion is beyond me. Given that both Nate and Riley had good camps, JT needed to see both of them in real play. He did. That 1st int was equal parts bad choice by nate and outstanding play by the D. The second INT was all on Nate. And he was done afterwards.
As far as whether Nate sees the field again, well, yeah — he does. In garbage time. After all, it’s a long season, and Riley could get hurt. The last thing we want in that situation is a degraded, destroyed, and dejected Longshore coming in.
Seriously, if you guys need to gripe about something, it ought to be the pass defense, because it sucked loud and often. Way too many big plays given up by soft coverage. Too many 3rd and long conversions by MSU and too many open receivers. Teams like ASU, $C, and Oregon are going to kill us if that doesn’t get better.
Go Bears!
If griping about the pass D is what you are looking for, then you’ll be happy here, SoCal Oski. This blog is lousy with griping about the pass D!

This is an easy one.
No…. but we do have the best FG and PAT holder in the pac10, and that’s comforting.

Nate
passing skill is evident after seeing someone throw for a few games. He has that. Whether or not a QB is a good decision-maker, which is very important, does not become clear until much later. At this point, Nate has completely failed that test, and there is not really time for him to redeem himself. It seems like most of his INTs stem from him being locked into the first choice of whatever play is called, regardless of the coverage. Riley doesn’t have that problem, and he has every bit as much natural talent as Longshore does.
The A's colors are green and gold.
I think Nate will see some significant time in the CSU game, and possibly the Maryland and WSU games, provided that those games are as lopsided as talent dictates. Regardless of Tedford’s comments, Nate’s days of competing for the starting job are likely over, but I think it’s important for Longshore to get his head on straight with some level of success (even in garbage time), just in case Riley does go down when a game is still in question.
